Using a 2nd Computer for Sample Playback

After a few recent projects started to choke on all the Kontakt3 instruments I was using, I'm thinking about getting a 2nd computer just to run more sampled sounds.
Anybody have any experiences/tips to report? Should I get a 2nd mac (iMac? Mini?) or a cheap PC?
Should I just route the audio normally, or use Ethernet (or something else) for machine-to-machine communication?
Or is there a way to get better performance on one computer by using Kontakt in 'standalone' mode and somehow routing it back into Logic?
Interested in other users' solutions to this situation. I've already got plenty of RAM and drive space, and I know my way around Kontakts DFD settings. But I used to use an old PC for Gigastudio, and now I'm thinking it's time to try a similar setup. What's the preferred method these days?

hey guys
my main computer that my ipod/itunes is synced to is broken atm, i want to use my laptop to remove a few gig worth of files..how do i go about this?
i have a 160gig ipod full, so dont want to transfer it all to laptop
is there anyway of getting stuff off my ipod to free up space? i worked out how to add from the laptop but not how to remove
worse case scenario i would add the files to the laptop edit it then remove them again

Either the physical drive or the enclosure electronics has failed. The light you are seeing is powered by the USB connection, the power, electricity, all USB ports put out. That doesn't mean the actual physical hard drive or the USB to SATA bus electronics are working properly. If it doesn't show in Disk Utility then it is DEAD.
Most of the time it is the enclosures electronics that fail. Removing the physical drive from the enclosure and put it in another enclosure or using a SATA to USB adapter, one that has it's own AC power supply, might allow you to get the files off the drive.

So you had music on the iPad that is not in iTunes and you no longer have the iPad. Is that what you are saying? If that is what you are saying, iTunes won't "recognize" anything that was on the iPad, that was not purchased from iTunes. If the music was purchased from iTunes, you should probably be able to download it again for free as long as you are using the same Apple ID that you bought it with. Did you try downloading the music again?

no, not really, you need two. you can use a VM as the machine under test though.

Im trying to clock 5 6551s in a PXI-1006 chassis and a5404 in slot 2. I have configured the 6551s to use the start line as the sample clock but I still get the error

Use a g-Raid for DLNA playback?

Not sure if this is the right forum for this topic, but here it goes. I currently have an OLD Win XP used as a home server to store lots of photos and video. The short story is that I'm thinking of making the switch from my current laptop to a Macbook Pro for photo and video editing, and also wanted to be able to play both on my DLNA TV. The solution that the salesman (genius?) at my local Apple store came up with was, instead of ALSO getting a new home server, simply keep the files on a g-Raid external drive, giving access to all videos and photos to all the different components on my home network. I could then use the Macbook to edit, and just store everything on the g-Raid. He said if the files were not readily readable by my TV, that a simple solution would be to use an Apple TV (and thus how I got onto this forum).
So my questions:
1. Does this sound like a reasonable way to get rid of my current home server?
2. Is the g-Raid going to offer DLNA playback for my TV, and will my other computers have trouble accessing videos or photos?
3. Would I simply download NEW media directly to the external drive, then edit on my Macbook, or download onto the Macbook first, edit, then just store it on the g-Raid?

using an extrenal drive for FCP won't make your computer run faster.
the thing is that your Mac has the internal hard drive, and it's on that drive that the operating system (OS X) is installed (the startup disc). its also on that same drive that the application (FCP) is installed.
that means that when you are running FCP the Mac is already accessing the disc drive for operating system level calls and application level calls ... if you also add the enormous disc access requirements of reading and writing video data, on the same hard drive, it causes performance problems, you get dropped frames, and generally life is not good.
using an external drive for your media (scratch disc) will take that disc access burden off of the startup disc, it means that when running FCP media playback will not be interupted by system and application level calls ... responsiveness will feel snappier, there will be fewer dropped frames, the sun wil come out and you will find a $100 note in old pair of pants that you haven't worn for years. (maybe)
a single drive in a FW enclosure will be fine for basic DV editing needs. when you move up to working with higher data rates such as multiple streams of DV (multiple layers of DV in the same timeline) or for Uncompressed SD and HD then you will need a disc fast enoughto handle that kind of data rate ... thats when you need RAID disc. the G-RAID is a good solid drive with FW800 connectibvity for faster data rates. there are other options. also the SATA raids are super fast and will handle even more media bandwidth.

Any ideas on how i can transfer music?

but what I had to do when I got my new computer is this:
plug my iPod into my older computer( the one that is authorized with the iPod ) and dump all the songs back to iTunes ( only the ones that are not already there ). once you are SURE you have back-up'd your iPod tunes then go to next step.
start itunes and plug your iPod into your computer, when itunes prompts you to erase or delete and use this ipod on this computer, accepted it. Make sure you check to see if there is any updates for your iPod using iTunes iPod Tabs.
