Using a 4:3 17" LCD with a 1st gen intel MacBook

I have 2 MacBook's that we use in the office for our sales team. They like to have them hooked up to the 17" LCDs with external mice and keyboards. The problem is that when I mirror the display it shows up on the monitor as a 16:9 display... giving me the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen... almost as if to match the resolution on the MacBook.
The weird thing is that I have the LCD Monitor set to display 1280x1024 (4:3)... any ideas why this happens... I had it working before but not sure what the issue is. I have just recently formatted and installed Leopard fresh with all the latest updates.

Yes, if you go into Displays preferences, you will see an Arrangement tab anytime that two or more displays are active. Under the Arrangement tab you will see miniature, rectangular representations of the screens that are running. One of them will show a small white bar across the top, which is meant to represent the menu bar. You can click on and drag the bar to the other rectangle. This will cause the real menu bar (and dock) to be on the other screen.

  • Why doesn't Nike+ work with the 1st Gen Ipod touch with 2.1 software?

Why doesn't Nike+ work with the 1st Gen Ipod Touch with 2.1 software?

The second gen iPod Touch has firmware version 2.1.1(5F138) whereas the 1st Gen only allows 2.1 (5F137). Don't know if that has anything to do with it, but it's likely.
Why doesn't Apple allow those with the Nike+iPod sports kit to use their external sensor on the 1st Gen iPod Touch?!?! I can't see why the sensor would be incompatible with the right firmware upgrade!!

  • How can I use Itunes 10.3.1.55 with a 4th gen Touch with IOS 5.01

Is there any way I can use iTunes 10.3.1.55 with a 4g Touch that is running IOS 5.01?  Everytime I try to connnect my daughters touch for her it gives me a message that I need to be running iTunes 10.5.  I do not want to run that as everytime I do the upgrade I have issues with iTunes locking up my pc, using crazy ammounts of CPU, and the iTunes store not working.  I have tried 10.5 on all 3 of my pcs at home with the same lack of success so do not wish to upgrade to it as the 10.3 version is working fine for my wifes iPhone4 and my sons 3rd gen touch.

You will need to have the iBooks app on your iPad. If you don't currently have it installed then try downloading the current version of the app on your computer's iTunes so that the app is in your purchase history. Then on your iPad go to the Purchased tab in the App Store app and see if you can download an older compatible version of it.
You can then either download the book directly in the iBooks app on your iPad via the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in it. Or connect the iPad to your Mac's iTunes and select the iPad, and use its Books tab to select and sync that book to it (the Books tab should pick up the library from your Mac's iBooks app)

  • Can you add new AirPort Express Base Station Simultaneous dual-band 802.11n with a 1st Gen time capsule network

    Hi
Has anyone tried using the AirPort Express Base Station with a first generation Time Capsule and used it to extend their network, while still being able to use the Simultaneous dual-band 802.11n on their network?
    Thanks in advance

The first generation Time Capsule was not a simultaneous dual band device.
If you add the "new" AirPort Express to the network and configure it to "Extend a wireless network", it will extend the one single band signal that it is receiving from the Time Capsule.
In other words, the AirPort Express will not extend simultaneous dual bands in this type of setup...since it can only "extend" what it receives. You would need a simultaneous dual band Time Capsule if you want that type of functionality.

  • Unable to set up dual band with my 1st Gen Airport Extreme

Not sure if my 1st Gen Airport extreme supports this but I unable to figure out how to setup dual band networking.  I have certain devices that work on 2.4 Ghz and some that work on 5ghz.  I trying to improve my network speed by separating the devices that can use 5ghz.  Any advise please?

1st Gen AirPort Extreme will do either 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz....but not both simultaneously.
Simultaneous dual band was introduced in the 3rd Gen AirPort Extreme.
Simplest solution.....the current AirPort Express will do simultaneous dual band. You could then reconfigure the AirPort Extreme to extend the 2.4 GHz network for increased coverage.
Be careful with 5 GHz as this is pretty much a "same room" or "line-of-sight" deal since 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals....they won't penetrate through walls or other obstructions nearly as well as 2.4 GHz signals.

  • MacBookPro8,2 (AKA Early 2011) will not Sync with AppleTV 1st gen

I have a MBP (MacBookPro6,2) purchase Dec 2010 and a new Thunderbolt MBP (MacBookPro8,2). My plan is to give the "Older" MBP to my daughter who has a PowerBook G4.
Upon receiving the new machine, I used Apple's Migration Utility to transfer all my data and settings from the 2010 MBP to the 2011 MBP. All my iTunes Media is on an External Hard Drive that I connect as needed via FireWire 800. iTunes is version 10.2.1 on both machines.
A problem arose when I tried to sync new iTunes content from the 2011 MBP to my 1st gen AppleTV. The 2011 MBP will not sync, giving the Error Message: "Apple TV "My Apple TV" is not responding. Check that any firewall software running on this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689."
I "Uninstalled 'Little Snitch' and turned off the Apple firewall on the 2011 MBP; (i left them alone on the 2010 MBP as there were no problems with that set up on that machine.) No joy. I reset the Apple TV to Factory Defaults and then tried to SetUp and sync from the 2011 MBP again; but again no joy.
From the 2010 MBP, I "Restored" the Apple TV to factory setting, updated the ATV software and then was able to sync all my data with no problem.
Now, the 2011 MBP is running a special version of MacOS 10.6.6 (10J3210). The 2010 MBP is running the Release Version of MacOS 10.6.6 which is Build 10J567. Other than that, the two machines are clones of each other.
Any ideas why the 2011 MBP shows this error and refuses to sync? I did call Apple Support. They had no clue and referred me to a Genius Appointment.

I got the same problem Driving me nuts!! And of course, no help from apple...

  • Please help me with this 1st gen ipod Nano question!

Unfortunately, my 1st gen Nano just died, most likely due to the heat in my car since I played it in there all the time. Now I have inherited an old 2nd gen Nano and would love to be able to transfer all the music from my dead 1st gen to this one. Is it possible without the computer that had all the music from my 1st gen? (the computer died long ago as well!) Is there a way to transfer the music from nano to nano without a computer? Or am I just out of luck...? Thank you for any help you can offer.

Just so I understand, your Nano is dead, the computer you used to sync it is dead, and I assume you have no backup.
    Is that right?
Anyway, you can't copy music directly from one Nano to another, dead or alive.
See if this helps: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
I believe you will need to download all your iTunes purchases to a computer and sync it with the replacement Nano. You do not have to pay for previous iTunes Store purchases again.
    Launch iTunes on a computer.
Click on iTunes Store on the left
On the right you will see this
Click on "Purchased" (with the orange blob)
On the summary page that appears select the tab "Not on This Computer" on the right.
On the list that appears, select what you want and then click the "Download" button.
To play what you download, you will need to "Authorize this Computer" for each computer you wish to authorize. This only has to be done once. There is a limit of five computers that you may authorize.

  • What Happened with the 1st Gen iPod Nano Settlement

Whatever happened with the 1st generation iPod Nano settlement? Was it a scam? I signed up online a long time ago but never heard back.
Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this question. But, I haven't been able to get an answer anywhere else.
    Thanks!

I didn't sign up for it, but my understanding was it had not yet been finalized.

  • A few questions with SL & 1st gen Mac Pro

Hey everyone. I just got Snow Leopard for Christmas and I've installed it on my harddrive. (I have the latest update as well now) The problem I'm seeing is my EFI is 32bit. I can't boot into 64 bit mode. Is there a firmware or something I can type into the Terminal to put it in 64bit mode? I see all my apps are 64bit in the Activity Monitor. Is it hopeless for me to think I can run in full 64bit mode on my 1st gen Mac Pro? Also, I've noticed to that when I double click on an icon it doesn't open until I double click it 3-4 times and it becomes frustrating. And where is my "Mac HD" in the top right hand corner that I'm used to seeing??? Anyway, any help would be great. Thanks.

no, your mac is not capable of booting in 64-bit mode.

yes. but you are not missing much. you still run all 64-bit apps as 64-bit. only the kernel is 32-bit. to get actual advantage of 64-bit kernel you need loads of RAM (more than 8GB) and some 64-bit apps that are optimized to take advantage of a lot of RAM and have actual need to do it.
Also, I've noticed to that when I double click on an icon it doesn't open until I double click it 3-4 times and it becomes frustrating. And where is my "Mac HD" in the top right hand corner that I'm used to seeing???
go to finder preferences->general and check the box to show hard drives on the desktop.
Anyway, any help would be great. Thanks.

  • ICloud with iPhone 1st gen

Hi there - a friend of mine is long term user of MobileMe and asks me if there will be a possibility for him to get his email on his old iPhone 1st gen after going to iCloud. Can anyone give me some insight on this matter? Thanks in advance.

On the first gen, he can't upgrade to iOS 5, hence he can't use iCloud, which requires iOS 5.  His mobileme will eventually go out of service at the end of June, so he is definitely near the end of using his MobileMe email unless he gets a newer generation iPhone.

  • Using Cinema Display and Samsung LCD with One Mini

I have been trying unsuccessful to output the DVI of my mini to my 23" Apple Cinema and my Samsung 4669F (native resolution of 1920x 1080p). I have tried various methods including using the Gefen 1:2 DVI Splitter (Ext-DVI-144) and a DVI-HDMI cable to the samsung in conjunction with SwitchResX, all to no avail.
Any help?- I wish to mirror the same display on both LCD screen simultaneously?- However, I would settle for a solution of a convenient A/B switch? ANy tips?
What about an external USB video card for the Mini- that should work too?- any tips?
I used SwitchResX because I determine that because the 23" ACD was 1920 x1200, the Samsung was not displaying because the Gefen splitter box was sending the same signal in 1920 x1200 to the Samsung, which was not accepted by the Samsung whose native resolution is 1920 x 1080p. However, once I switched the resolution to 1920 x 1080 to force an out of the mini to that resolution, there was no display at all on the 23" ACD and I had to do a safe mode reboot to recover the display on the 23" ACD?-
One would think that it would be relatively easier for Apple to create a script that would allow a person to display 1920 x 1080p on the Cinema Display, a script that overrided the message from the ACD that tells the mac mini to stretch any resolution to 1920x1200 before it gets to the 23" - This way I could use SwitchResX and the Gefen splitter to output 1920x1080p to both displays at once (of course the 23" ACD would have to have some black borders on the top and bottom. Why doesn't apple make this available? - Spent $900 on this monitor and the Mini has a DVI output- why should the Gefen splitter be rendered useless simply because my other display is a different native resolution.

  • Can the camera connector be used with nano 1st gen

As subject states, can the camera connector be used with the Nano??
    Many thanks!!

The camera connector cannot be used with the iPod
nano; it is only compatible with the iPod photo, iPod
with color display, and Fifth Generation iPods out of
    those released so far.

Ok thanks, but the Nano does have a Does a colour screen and can also store photos.

  • Can i use nike+ipod (sensor kit or not) with my 1st gen ipod touch?

okay. so i just bought an ipod touch about a month ago because i had an ipod classic but wanted to use nike+. Well i was cruisin the apple website looking to buy nike+ and realized that it says that it only works with 2nd generation touchs. I was about to bust a nut. I did not just spend 250 dollars on a touch and now i cant even use nike+
I bought the 2.2 software upgrade a bit before that, and im wondering if with this upgrade i can use nike+? I understand that the 2nd gen touch has a built in thingy majigger, but if i bought the sports kit (both the sensor fo rhte ipod nad the reciever for the shoe) can i still use it?
    thanks in advance.

    Nope... no external volume controls.
So now I have to return a Christmas gift -- one I was really looking forward to using! Thanks a lot, Apple.
And here I thought I was buying a reasonably up-to-date product six months ago, when I got my Touch.
Is there some really compelling reason why the plug-in receiver will work with Nanos of all kinds... but not Touchs?

  • Can I use my Ipod Mini A1070 charger with the 4th gen Shuffle?

I have the old Ipod Mini which came with the A1070 charger.  Would this charger be OK with the 4th generation (current) Shuffle?
The connections all fit properly but I was concerned about the compatibility between how much power was going into the device from the AC outlet.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the response.  Just got the Shuffle home and the Ipod Mini charger is not compatible.  The connections don't fit.  The connections do fit on my I-Pad charger and I've heard stories going both ways that it will work and it won't work.

  • Having start-up issues with my 1st gen Macbook Pro

Hi everyone. I just started having start-up issues with my first generation Macbook Pro. It was working fine the other day when I last used it, but today I went to use it and it wont load up to my desktop...? It starts up (grey screen with the little swirly bar under the apple,) then it goes to a blue screen, then my background and dock appear, then (before any of my desktop files even show up,) it goes to a blue screen (that brightens up and then dims a little,) and it just keeps showing this with a little swirly progress symbol (shows when the screen is darker blue, then disappears when the screen is a brighter blue.) I've included a video that I took with my iPhone to show it situation. Any ideas as to what's wrong with it? Thanks in advance!

Safe Boot by restarting your computer while holding down the "shift" key.  Safe booting disables all nonessential processes, often times allowing you to start up when you would otherwise crash.
As of OS X 10.5.6 Safe Boot deletes the dynamic loader shared cache location in the /var/db/dyld directory.  A corrupt cache here can cause the blue screen crash.  Once you restart normally, the cache will be recreated.  This should take care of the issue.
