Using a camcorder as analogue converter

I'm considering buying a cheap camcorder to use as a analogue converter to a reasonable sony crt monitor for color correction of a HDV project. The monitor isn't hd and isn't fully color managed but would this be a better setup than using my calibrated computer monitor for judging corrections.

Thanks Guys. So if I go through the cheap camcorder onto a reasonable TV then I should get a pretty good estimation of what the colors will in the final output. The project I'm working on is my first and my background is in stills retouching so I have a couple calibrated Dell 20" screens but have found that after transfering a couple corrected shots they appear too light on dvd/tv (the look the direct is after is very dark). Would this setup help get me an picture that is close to the final look?

  • Playing music wirelessly from itunes  using a Digital to Analogue Converter

Hi, i new here so bear with me!! I have an ideal setup I wish to have but wondered if it's at all possible with Apple hardware.
I have an extensive library on Itunes in Apple lossless format stored on an external hard drive and wish to stream it to my hifi using a DAC, the server needs to have either an optical and digital SPDIF coax output or 2 USB outlets which carry a digital audio output. Is this at all possible?
I don't wish to go down the Squeezebox route due to the format my library is in.
    Many thanks.

You can use an airport express to stream your music from an iTunes library (or a iOS device)using airplay. Airport express has an optical digital output which is capable of 44.1/16 (CD quality is you have lossless files). I have it hooked to a musical fidelity dac and control playback through the apple remote application in my ipad. You can no distinguish in a/b comparisons with a good CD player, and my rig is quite high-end.
I know iTunes streams 44.1/16. Not sure on what's the quality of streaming from an iOS device. It does sound poorer to my ears, but...

That camera shoots H.264 in an .avi wrapper.
You will have to transfer the files via the Finder.
Get a free copy of MPEG Streamclip and convert them to QuickTime .mov using the H.264 codec if you are presumably editing in iMovie.
Note that your list of video codecs won't look like mine as I have Final Cut Pro, but H.264 is definitely an option for you.

  • Camcorder or DV converter for VHS to DV conversion?

I have home movies on VHS tapes that I have already converted to DVD's, but I decided I would like to import the VHS videos into iMovie as DV files as a long term backup/storage plan for my home movies before the tapes degrade. I already have a Sony mini-DV camcorder that has passthrough capability. I was wondering if the quality of the DV files created is any better with a DV converter (say like a Canopus model) or is there little discernable quality difference in the conversion process from analog to digital between using the camcorder or using a DV converter. I don't want to do much editing, I just want the best quality. If it's better with a DV converter, I'll buy one.
    Thanks!

I am just finishing up doing the same thing as you: a long process of converting ALL of my old VHS home movies to digital in the form of DV tapes.
I second the recommendation to do it with a digital camcorder, and not use the pass-through method, but record from the VHS tape to DV tapes. This gives you a digital archive of your original VHS tapes. The DV tapes are small, easy to store, instantly available for importing into iMovie. And, when technology changes, your digital movies are ready to be brought into whatever is to come. DVDs may go the way of VHS tapes in a few years, and we will all have to convert our now 'old' DVDs!
And (something I highly recommend that you do), after I import my converted digital DV footage into iMovie, create my movies, create and burn my DVDs, I also 'share' the created iMovie back to my camcorder, saving the iMovies to DV tape. I am concerned that something may happen to my DVDs, even though I make several copies of each one. I want to have my created movies preserved in several digital forms.
Yes, that means a few more DV tapes, but now I have digital versions of the original old VHS tapes that were beginning to degrade, AND, I have my creative movies with titles, transitions, stills and music all preserved on DV tape, so I do not have to recreate any of my movies.
I do save all my iDVD projects as Disk Images, and store those on my external drive. Even if my movies bloat to over 40 GB, they are preserved at 4.7GB max (for my single layer DVDs) on my DVD Disk Images, with no loss of quality. From the disk images, I can burn another copy of any DVD that I have made.
I must have converted at least 120 hours of VHS footage. It didn't seem that long at the time. I would just set the camcorder to record the footage, return about 55minutes later to see where to break the recording to change the tape, and continue. Doing it all over a few weeks time seemed easiest. I also had a 'dedicated' camcorder for it, so my recording didn't interfere with taking movies of current family events!
Have fun...one of the best parts is getting to see footage that you have forgotten. My oldest tapes were of my daughter at age 2 3/4 and my son as a newborn, 25 years ago!

  • How good is the Airport Express inbuilt Digital to Analogue converter?

How good is the Airport Express inbuilt Digital to Analogue converter?
I have just purchased a 2012 dual band Airport Express which has the combined optical/3.5mm analogue jack audio output.
This is to connect to my hifi seperate amplifier, which does not have an optical input.
This gives me a couple of options
    a) just use a standard 3.5mm jack to phono cable (and use the built in DAC in the airpor express)
    or
    b) purchase a seperate DAC to convert the optical from the Express into phono and connect that to the amplifier
I will be sending 250-320kbps music to the airport express wirelessly.
Will I see much/any benefit in sound quality with option B vs option A?
I ask because option A is free (I already have the cable) and option B will be around £20-£30 depending on which DAC I were to buy (I would also need a new TOSlink optical cable).
These are the sort of DACs I was looking at.
    Thanks, Chipstix

How good is the Airport Express inbuilt Digital to Analogue converter?
Please check out this stereophile article on the earlier AirPort Express. I understand that the newest version may use basically similar audio hardware.
I will be sending 250-320kbps music to the airport express wirelessly.
The AirPort Express Base Station (AX) works only with iTunes v4.6+ and is limited to music files that iTunes can read; ie, 16-bit data only. (An exception is you can use a third-party product like Rogue Amoeba's AirFoil to stream other non-iTunes sources.) These data, though, can be in any file format that iTunes recognizes, from lossy MP3s at the low-quality end of the spectrum to Apple Lossless and lossless AIF or WAV files at the high end. It is also important to note that the AX functions only at a 44.1kHz sample rate. When you play 32kHz or 48kHz data, iTunes sample-rate-converts the data in real time before sending it to the AX.
iTunes uses a QuickTime CODEC to convert audio files to Apple Lossless, and then, uses AirPlay to send them to the AX. In turn, the AX uses built-in software that converts the Apple Lossless to an Encoded Digital Audio format. From there, digital audio is sent to a optical transceiver to convert the electrical signal to an optical one before sending it to the innermost part of the audio port. As you already know for analog, the AX has a built-in DAC to convert the Encoded Digital Audio to Analog which is sent to the same audio port.
One operational glitch is the fact that, as the AX doesn't have a local clock circuit, when the incoming data is interrupted, as it is when you change songs in iTunes, there is no longer a digital output to feed the DAC, which loses lock as a result. Using an external DAC, which may offer better audio performance, may have issues with this glitch. Some DACs are more sensitive than others.

  • WIth LabVIEW how do I control an instrument with a RS232 output, using a RS232 to USB converter cable.

WIth LabVIEW how do I control an instrument with a RS232 output, using a RS232 to USB converter cable since I dont have rs232 ports. I have two instruments that I want to control in this manner. One is an Imada ZPS force gage with RS232 output. The other is a Panasonic HL-G103-S-J laser micrometer sensor which is RS422. I've done considerable LabVIEW programming using GPIB but I have no experience with devices like these. Any tutorial or examples would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I understand that you want to control a device which having RS 232 port as output. If so, you can use an USB-RS232 cable from PC to device and you can control or monitor the device.
    See this link http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/2669
Also, first check the device in hyperterminal and then continue to program in labVIEW. You can find the serial VI's in Instrument I/O.

  • Using a camcorder to record video and an interface to capture the audio

Here is what I am trying to do:
Use my camcorder to record the video and use a mic connected to an audio interface to record the audio portion of the video.
Here is how my set up looks like:
I have an M-Audio firewire audio interface connected to my MacBook Pro. I have a mic connected to the interface, and I have a firewire cable connecting the camcorder to the interface.
I am able to make this work using iSight but not with the camcorder.
Recording with the camcorder works fine but the mic connected to the interface will not work. I can only hear the mic connected to the camcorder itself.
    Any suggestions?

... hmm, probably beyond the concept of this nice consumer app...?
iM is meant to work with miniDV camcorders.. all audio+video come via that single firewire "line"...
I've heard about an "internal software router", which claims to route different sound inputs to diff. apps...
it's free, so give it a try: Soundflower

  • Help with using a camcorder in iMovie please?

    Hi.
I'm 17, and I'd like to create a video of a family holiday for my Nan & Grandad using their video camera, otherwise they'd have to pay some silly amount to get the content copied onto DVDs.
The camcorder they have is only meant to work with Windows - when you install all the drivers etc. I can't remember the model of it I'm afraid, but it's Panasonic MiniDV camera.
I tried connecting it to my Mac using the supplied cable (camera to USB), but it didn't work. I read somewhere that the camera they've got could work with a Mac if you have a Mini DV to firewire cable.
If I were to buy a Mini DV to Firewire cable, do you think it would work with iMovie '11? I've never used a camcorder with a Mac...
    Cheers

    Yes.
Firewire connection is required for DV cameras. The USB connection will not.

  • Audio disabled in Skype when using Digital Camcorder

    Hello guys,
I have a question regarding using DV Camcorder for Skype videochat. I have Mac Pro, OS X Leopard.
I am using digital Camcorder which is connected to Mac via FireWire connection. The problem is, that person I chat with is seeing my video fine, but cannot hear my audio. (I am using a standard external microphone connected to the camcorder via XLR, and camcorder shows that audio is received fine)
Is there any setting I have to change? Or anything else I have to adjust in order to fix this problem?
Thank you so much for any advise

There must be some users out there who for some odd reason don't won't the digital output to be mutable. Are they the majority of digital output users? Seems unlikely.
Can't we get our mute key back as an option for digital out in the Sound prefs panel?

  • Using ABAP Web Service tor convert IDoc to XML and transfer to SOAP Server

    Hi all,
I have a problem to use ABAP Web Service to convert IDoc's to XML and then send them to a SOAP Server.
Currently we have the following landscape:
    SAP->XI->Archive
The sap-system (ECC6.0) sends an IDoc to the Exchange Infrastructe. The XI maps the IDoc and converts it to the required XML format, used by the archive. Afterwards, the XML documents are sended to the SOAP Server.
So I'm trying to replace the Exchange Infrastructure with ABAP Web Service.
I've read a lot of posts and documents reagarding ABAP Web Serivce, converting IDoc's to XML, RFC and so on, but I'm not able to do the replacement.
I don't know how to start and which steps are required.
The required roles and authorizations at the sap-system and the service for soamanager and the Web Service Viewer are available.
First I thought to create the RFC and partner profiles and then the report to convert IDoc to XML as a BAPI. With this BAPI I supposed to create and define a Web Service. The problem is, I don't know how to trigger the report if the Idoc should be send to the archive.
Hopefully, someone has an idea or a how-to for me.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Christoph

    Hi BigTicket.
A suggestion to trigger the BAPI / WebService at the IDoc receiving is to use a user exit or enhanced inside the idoc function module. When the idoc arrived to the idoc port the system start the related function module and then your user exit/enhanced in which you invoke your BAPI.
    I hope this help.
    Ciao.

  • I have a new Nikon D750 sitting on my desk and can't edit the photos with any adobe product?  We are in full wedding season and am a little frustrated.  Photo mechanics opens them right up to download them.   I am using the Nikon software to convert them

I have a new Nikon D750 sitting on my desk and can't edit the photos with any adobe product?  We are in full wedding season and am a little frustrated.  Photo mechanics opens them right up to download them.   I am using the Nikon software to convert them into tiffs.  when is the camera raw update coming out.  I am not the only photographer with this issue check out all the chatter about it.

This happens every single time a new camera comes out from one of the two big camera makers. Nikon and Canon do not send preproduction units to Adobe, so Adobe has to go out and buy a D750 or whatever from the store to test and profile it before they can update Lightroom. They can't get one earlier than you and I can. The profiling is quite an extensive operation. Other camera makers do send preproduction units, use dng, or do the profiling in-house and there you often get support right from release. If camera makers would finally embrace an open raw format such as dng, this whole problem would be gone but both Canon and Nikon seem to think they live in an upside-down world where their clients only use their software.
Usually the dead period only lasts a few weeks but it is frustrating nevertheless. My only advice is to not buy a new camera at the day of release and expect to have third parties to support it. You definitely should not be buying these cameras right away if your business depends on it. Aperture, Capture One, etc. have the exact same problem. No third party (read non-Nikon in this case) will support the camera from the release date. Some are quicker than other adding support. Adobe is somewhere in the middle of the pack in this respect. Nobody outside of Adobe knows when an update comes out. Could be tomorrow, could be a few more weeks or a month. They might jump straight to Lightroom 6 and never add direct support to LR 5. Sometimes they will first bring out a beta version of dng converter that will convert the new camera's nef files to dng, which will work fine in the current Lightroom before updating Lightroom itself.
