Using a central itunes library

I operate a Macpro with the itunes library resident on its local harddrive.
I also use an apple tv and a airport connection to a stereo.
I use a timecapsule wireless router with a WD network drive hanging off the time capsule.
Is there a way to have the itunes library resident on the network drive so that it is available to all my devices if the macpro is turned off or if I am using windows on that machine at the time through bootcamp?
Any assistance or guidance would be appreciated.

Hi Tim,
I had this set up before. My iTunes library resided on a SERVER. On my local machine, I made sure that what usually is the iTunes map, instead was a link to the iTunes library on the server.
This does not work very good though. A couple of problems:
1) Two computers can't access the same library at the same time
2) If two users start to change thing in the same library, even though not at the same time, access rights may become "corrupt", i e one file owned by one user and another by another user. This can be solved, but will occur from time to time and be a pain when it happens.
3) If the computer is disconnected from the network, you will not have any music available.
Today I use Home Sharing. Works almost all the way. The server machine is configured to always import all new things on all "clients". In this way I aim to make the server a kind of Master copy. (it has the iTunes library on a external RAID disc!) Then I copy what I daily use to my machine. The same goes for my Wife. In this way we can share all things in the iTunes library.
I have a couple of issues, one just posted here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2423104
Another issue is that Home Sharing is (as far as I know) based on that you from one coputer can IMPORT files from another computer. But I haven't managed to PUT things from my computer onto the server. Thus, since I have a server without screen and it's placed in my basement, I need to run Remote Desktop. Works and I'm lucky to use the program when running my company. Otherwise that's something you need to have.
Also, the server runs Mac OS X Leopard Server! Not the regular client software.
Hope it helps!
Edit: spelling

  • Best storage solution for central itunes library?

I'd like to create a 4 Gb central library, running itunes permantenly on a headless Mac Mini. The library will contain all music and videos and should be available to an Apple TV, PC and Iphones (remote).
I am not sure about what kind of storage solution to buy.  I want a second disk for backups, ideally also for storage of system backups of my PC and iphones. Should I buy and install a NAS and connect via Ethernet or are two firewire or usb 3.0 external hdds connected to the Mac Mini a better solution? I want to avoid issues with corrupt itunes libraries, missing files, connection issues with home sharing, etc. And are external hdds built to run 24//24 in terms of life span, energy consumption and heating?
    Thank you.

I believe there is a way to have my itunes library on an external, but can the iMac read the external and stream to Apple TV with quality?
    No problems at all.
    Get an external USB drive.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to the external drive.
Hold Option, launch iTunes, select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the external.
That is all you need to do.
You can do this with on the laptop and and later use the same iTunes library on another computer just by connecting the external, holding Option, selecintg Choose library... and selecting the iTunes folder on the external.

  • Using a single iTunes library with multiple logins.

I've setup my iMac to have multiple logins for everyone in my family. I'd like everyone to use the same iTunes library, though, so that all purchases and playlists can be seen and used by everyone. I have it so that everyone has the same files, but not the same library. That is, the playlists don't come through on the other logins, and purchases made from one login don't translate to another.
I'm not trying to rip anyone off, I just want my whole family to have the same library.
    Is this possible?

Thanks much, but I've done that. That method shares FILES but not the LIBRARY
Then you missed a step or two.
The steps above share the entire iTunes library (media, artwork, playlists, library file, Genius files, everything).
In the Music/iTunes folder on everyone's login is a file called iTunes Library.itl.
Yes, and holding Option and selecting Choose library allows you to select which iTunes library you want to use.
THAT is the file I want to share, but I can't seem to move it.
The steps above will do exactly what you want.
All users will use the exact same iTunes library.
You need to hold Option and select Choose library (notice is says, "Library").
Once you copy your /Music/iTunes/ folder to /Users/Shared/ folder, everyone can delete /Username/iTunes/ folder.

  • Can 2 apple id using the same itunes library?

Hi .. I'm using ipone 4s and ipad3 using 2 different apple id. Can i used the same itunes library for both? Where i can copy thosevpurchased app in ipone to ipad?

    From Here   http://support.apple.com/kb/HE37
I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

  • HT1535 I own an iPhone4, an iPod 3rd generation and an iPad 2. I use the same iTunes library but unfortunately synced iPad with a different computer before syncing to my own. Do I risk losing the films/apps I've downloaded onto my iPad if I sync with my i

I don't want to sync what is on my iPod to my iPad. (I have a 32gb iPod but only 16gb on iPad. The iPod I use mostly for music.) I can't seem to add the films I have downloaded onto iPad to iTunes. If I could do that, I could erase them from iPad to create more storage.
    This is intensely confusing, sorry.

    Question.....

    Answer.....
Yes you will lose the films that you downloaded to the iPad when you sync with your own iTunes unless you transfer the purchases into your own iTunes library. Were these movies that you purchased? If so, you might be able to download them again for free. Do you have multiple computers that you sync from or is this someone else's purchased content?
You can select whatever you want to sync to all of your devices in iTunes, you do not have to sync the same content to all device.

  • How to use a single iTunes library when using multiple Windows Accounts

Has anyone had success using a common iTunes library between multiple accounts on a single computer? I've tried and have been able to point all of the "different" iTunes programs in the different profiles to the same place...however, when I add files in one profile, they are not visible in any others. I've authorized the "different" iTunes in each profile to play music with my various iTunes store accounts...but no luck.
Any thoughts? (As an aside, what happened to the days when Apple made everything simple? I mean, REALLY SIMPLE! They worked hard at that...and seem to have just given up on the things that made them GREAT! <sigh>)

Drag the entire iTunes folder to a shared directory.
Make sure all users have full access privileges to this folder.
Start iTunes holding the Shift key and select *Choose existing library*.
Now quit iTunes, log out and go the next user.
Start iTunes holding the Shift key and select *Choose existing library*.
    Do this for each user.

  • HT1751 Is it possible to use single external iTunes Library from multiple computers (my mac book, pc, mac mini)

    Hi,
I recently decided to maintain my itunes libraries distrubuted onto different computers. (such as mac mini, mac book, pc)
I am planning to consolidate one of my iTunes library, move it to external source and configure external hard drive to be used by my iTunes library permanently.
For this purpose, I bought 5big NAS pro network storage hardware. I completed all basic setup and now I need help on designing access methodology.
Question is : Does external iTunes library supports to be used by more than one iTunes application? if not what will be the closest solution to save storage and ease of library management?
    Thanks in advance

Is the camera damaged? Could be a hardware problem.
    Try:
Close the Camera app in the multitasking bar, then try again.
Restart/Reset/Restore your iPod. In that order.

  • HT4972 if i want to update my system using a new itunes library would my old data go

if i want to update my system using a new itunes library would my old data

I was concerned about this when I got my new iMac last year and had to say goodbye to my old emac (sob!) In the end I had to copy all my tunes etc onto an external hard drive and transfer to the iMac. I think I had to do that in this scenario, but now I have a new iPad when I connect to iTunes on iMac it shows that I can sync and transfer the iTunes stuff if I wanted. I would be extra safe and back up the old tunes first on an external disk, esp if you have loads. I back up my stuff even now from my iMac iTunes as I don't even want to think about how much the stuff is worth!!

  • Two separate iPhones syncing and backing up to one centralized iTunes library?

    Hi all,
My wife and I have two iPhone 5s' and am wondering if we can sync and back these two separte iPhones to one iTunes library? The library is located on a NAS drive on a share just labeled Music.
Ideally I would like to keep the two backups and syncs separately but have the ability to load playlists and albums from the centralized iTunes and iPhoto library.
    Can this be done?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ed

This article covers what you want to do: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495
As long as the phones have different names you can set different sync settings for them in iTunes. However, if they have the same Apple ID for iCloud any iCloud content (mail, calendar, contacts, notes, reminders) will be duplicated. The way to deal with this is to have different iCloud accounts on each device, but use the same Apple ID for the iTunes & App Stores. This way you can share music and apps.

  • How can I use a newer itunes library with an older version of itunes on a different computer?

Hi there. We are running iTunes 10 on our (1.5-year-old) iMacs with the entire music library there.
I also have an old iMac G4 (for those of you who remember what that is :-) sitting in the living room that we use for watching DVDs and listening to music. The G4 is running iTunes 9, as it obviously is stuck with OX Tiger. I've last updated the music library on that machine probably about a year ago at which stage it still worked (by copying the library across from the other computer).
Now it doesn't work anymore. If I copy iTunes library over, I get an error message saying 'this library was created with a newer version of iTunes'. So that's no good. So what can I do without having to re-purchase and re-import music and re-set up playlistst etc? Surely that must be possible, they cannot just forbid me to use my own music that I've even purchased through iTunes? Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Felicity.

In the iTunes folder on the G5...
    Delete the file iTunes library.itl.
Move the iTunes library.xml (or iTunes Music library.xml) to the desktop.
    Start iTunes.
iTunes menu File > Library > Import playlist and select the iTunes library.xml you moved to the desktop.
You can then delete the file on the desktop.
