Using a Color Classic as a print server for modern Macs?

My fiancé and I have a 2011 MBP and a 2008 MBP respectively, both running Mountain Lion.
Our network is set up through a first-generation Time Capsule, which until recently, also had an Epson Stylus inkjet connected to it.
The Epson has passed away, and the only working printer we have is an old Apple Personal LaserWriter 320.
We still have several toner cartridges for the PLW, and it works just fine... but it only has tthe old 8-pin serial connector, and from what I understand, it's only compatible with LocalTalk.
The PLW is connected to a Mac Color Classic, which has been upgraded with an LC 575 logic board (including an ethernet communications card). It's currently running Mac OS 8.6. I'd like to set the Color Classic up as a print server until we can decide on a long-term solution, but I am unsure of how to get these systems to talk to each other over the network.
Can we get the Color Classic to host the PLW for our OSX machines?

m8,
Just like any hardwares,(vga, lan card, audio card etc) drivers for XP, Vista & Windows 2003 have specific drivers of its own. You'll need to find a driver for 3110(which include its modem) for windows 2003 server, but I doubt if you can find one. There is no work around on this!

  • Any Idears on how to use my D-Link Router with Print Server on my mac ?

I just got recently a D-Link Router with Print Server.
The Model is a DI-704UP. does anyone know how i can access the printer to my G5 ?
talked to D-Link and Apple and they have no solution.
    IMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

According to this page on the D-Link website about your product, the router includes a print server for Windows and that the software is for Windows only.
However, this page also on D-Link's website does offer you an unsupported solution.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Can anyone recommend a USB print server for both Mac & Windows?

After spending at least 20 hours trying to get my Macbook to print to a Windows XP shared printer, I am giving up and going the print server route. Unfortunately there seem to be a LOT of options and some are >$100. I want to be sure to find one that works for both Mac and Windows XP. Can anyone recommend a print server based on experience?
It can be hard-wired to the network (does not need to be wireless) and only needs one USB port. Also, it does not need to be "multi-function" compatible.
    Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, Apple just started using the CUPS printing system ~4 years ago. With CUPS drivers, you can print to all the standard comm protocols, the way drivers work in Windows. But except for Brother's, NO non-postscript printer driver on OS X was written to use CUPS. Instead they are using Carbon, the OLD OS 9 legacy programming interface. In that, they get to specify exactly which protocol is supported - and that's nearly always ONLY USB.
So, we have to rely on third party CUPS drivers. See if Gutenprint supports yours:
    http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/macosx
or else, you may need to use printfab:
    www.printfab.net
About print servers - they nearly all support "standard" protocols, which OS X (with CUPS drivers) can print to.

Can you use Time Capsule as a print server for printers connected via Ethernet or wirelessly?
I know that it works marvelous for printers connected via USB, but I'd like to know if you can use it as a more general print server.

No, you can't, but what do you expect to gain by doing so?
The main advantage of the print server is to provide multi-user network access to a printer that typically only supports a single connection. Since, by definition, your printer already has a network connection and can be used by multiple users.

  • Printer server for two HP printer on VISTA PC

I have just purchased a Dell pc with the VISTA operation system.
I have two HP printers: HP Laser Jet 4100, Model CAAC049A, Serial # USJNG10352 and a HP business inkjet 2250, Model C2691A#ABA, Serical # SSG095110PR.
I want to set them up so all PC's in the house can access them. I had been using an old Linksys printserver that is no longer support and will not work with VISTA.
Is there any way that I can get these printers set up to work with VISTA and a print server? I know I can add a card to each that will let me use an HP jet direct card. I have also seen a parallel print server for sale on your web site.
    What options do I have.

  • How can I use the color adjustments interface that shows up for camera RAW on jpeg files?

How can I use the color adjustments interface that shows up for camera raw on other files types? The HLS controls had the secondary color adjustments (6 colors instead of the 3). Plus, it had same vibrancy and a better Curves interface. Yesterday was the first time I imported raw into Photoshop CS5 and I got that really cool interface. What is that? Can I use that on other file formats?

Actually I am using the Tradional Chinese Version, when I try to edit the jpg file with camera raw, the system shows that there is no camera raw plug-in. The cmaera raw never work.

Hello stacksofamber and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
You should be able to find a Mac OSX driver for that printer. Did you check with the manufacturer/'s website?

  • I have partitioned my time capsule, but I can't get it to work as a Time Machine back up and permanent media server for both mac and PC. What format do I need to partition the drive to so that it works for both mac and windows and so that it will be visab

I have partitioned my time capsule, as I want part of it to act as a media server for both mac and windows. However I don't know what format that I need to partition it to. I also can't make it a permanently accesible drive. I want to restore the drive to the original format (which I don't know) and start again and re-partition the drive in a format that can be used for media by both mac and PC and for time machine back-ups and make the media part of it permanetly accesible so I can add and acccess my files.
    Thanks

You are mixing up a couple of things here.
The TC drive cannot be partitioned without removing it.. did you do that?
If you partition it you must use a Mac disk utility and use the HFS+ ie standard Mac format. And GUID partition table not windows type.
You can select erase disk in the airport utility.. that will take the disk back to original format. No partitions. TC is deliberately not partitioned as it is not a media server.. it is a backup device for TM. Over time .. the disk will be filled with TM backups so you have a long history of file changes to your computer.
There is no media server in the TC.. it is merely disk storage.. you can serve files from it to a media device.. but the TC itself is dumb as dumb.
Now the actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. The TC offers SMB file services to the network. You can copy files to and from the TC as if it was a local disk without caring one iota about the format. The TC handles that .. it is not a local disk .. it is a network drive.
Although you cannot partition the TC. you can still copy files to it.. this does have implications for TM.. but as long as there is plenty of free space should not be a major issue.
You can create a disk image via the disk utility in a Mac.. and as stated you can create partitions if you do it on a Mac with the disk directly connected which means breaking warranty if any exists on the TC.

No. Your iMac only has DVI video connection. You would need an iMac with Thunderbolt.

    Hi there,
The simplest way is to drag it across wirelessly using the 'Airdrop' application once both computers are near one another. 'Airdrop' can be found near the top, on the left hand side menu, within 'Finder'.

I plan to purchase a Mac mini and then a new iPad.  Can I use the iPad as a keyboard and screen for the Mac mini, using either the USB connector or Wi-Fi?

I'm sorry, I should have said thru Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi.  I want to use the mini as a base station and the iPad like a laptop that I can sync when I'm home and carry with me when I travel.  Is is possible to hook these 2 up - iPad/mini, through Bluetooth?  I understand I need to use a regular monitor/keyboard/mouse on the initial install.

  • Issue when using HP deskjet D1660 shared by printer server

    Hi,
I'm trying to use HP D1660 through ReadyNAS's (network storage) printer server feature.
I connected D1660 and ReadyNAS through USB link. Using system preference-printer&fax, my mac perfectly sees exact printer name broadcasted through bonjour and I assigned snow leopard built-in driver for "HP deskjet D1600 series".
But it turns out not to be working.
Interesting thing is, it perfectly works when I try to print on my Windows 7 PC with exactly same configuration (readnas-d1660 shared on network)
    Am I missing something?
I already tried every single protocols for network printers (IPP, LPD, HP jetdirect...).
    I'm stuck...

  • Use my ibook g3 as a "print server"

Im interested in knowing if I can use my ibook g3 to be my networks print server.
As in hooking up ibook g3 to my network, then hooking up my printer to the ibook, and then print through it from my macbook. Does this make any sense? I hope it does. If this is possible please provide me with details on how to do this. Thanks in advance.

You should be able to - I'm doing a similar thing but using my iMac as the 'print server' so that I can print from my iBook over the wireless network.
Go to Sharing in System Preferences and tick the box for Printer Sharing. It should now be set up automatically, but you can check the printer is being shared in the Printer system preference.
(The iBook will need to be on all the time if you want to always be able to print - it can't be sleeping).
The printer should show up under 'Shared Printers' in the options for printing when you want to print on your MacBook (at least it does in 10.4, I've not upgraded to 10.5 yet so I don't know if it's different).

  • Using an old WRT54G as a print server

I have an old WRT54G wireless router that I would like to use as a print server or access point for an HP printer that is located in a downstairs office. it would only be the printer hooked up. I just want to be able to print from anywhere in the house. Is this possible? Do I need different firmware? Any help with instructions would be great!! Thanks
    Marcel

Try http://www.dd-wrt.com.  It gives you the capability to put the router into client mode.  I am using it on my WRT54G to connect to a WRT54G2, but not with a printer.  Since your printer is network capable, I see no reason why this shouldn't work.

  • I am using pantone color codes, but my printer is not getting a close color match. What can I do to get a close color match?

Is there settings in CS5 Illustrator version 15.0.0 that I can set to get a closer match on the pantone color codes?

    Tara,
What happens if you save the file to PDF and print from Acrobat/Reader?
Is there a PostScript (emulation) printer driver for the printer, and if so, what happens if you use that?
If you print a CMYK document through a non PostScript driver, you will have a conversion from CMYK to RGB and then a conversion from RGB to CMYK, so you may expect any colour to be off.
