Using a comparison to NULL in a CASE statement
Hi, please could anybody advise me if it is OK to use comparison to NULL in a CASE statement. Alternatively, will a NULL be accepted in a to_number function giving a result of a NULL in the number variable?
I have a list of varchar2 values which will either be a number, be equal to '95%' or be NULL. I need to translate that to a number column, removing the % from 95%.
I would like to know if the syntax below is allowed:
CASE vPurity
WHEN NULL THEN
nPurity = '';
WHEN '95%' THEN
nPurity := 95;
ELSE
nPurity := TO_NUMBER(vPurity);
END CASE;
Many thanks.
robust
adj.
1. Full of health and strength; vigorous.
2. Powerfully built; sturdy. See Synonyms at healthy.
3. Requiring or suited to physical strength or endurance: robust labor.
4. Rough or crude; boisterous: a robust tale.
5. Marked by richness and fullness; full-bodied: a robust wine.
By saying "Robust" you are saying that DECODE is somehow stronger or better than CASE. This is not the case (scuse the pun) as CASE is more flexible than DECODE and can be easier to read in the code. CASE also handles non-equality comparisons far easier than can be done in DECODE.

Ryan DHi,
what I understood from above is that u want to filter NULL records and want to display only not null records. Try below query.
SELECT * FROM(select

Case Statement doesn't switch.
Hello,
I'm having an odd problem with a case statement. I'm passing is a Boolean that is false but the case statement never switches over to the 'false' loop. I have attached a word doc that has the screen shot of this being single stepped through. The top picture has the case being highlighted with the probe #8 next to it indicating "False". In the lower screen shot is the very next step that is highlighting the outer 'while loop' but the case statement is still 'True'. Has anyone seen this before?

Case No Switch.doc 210 KBHi Mello,
Well I see what you are saying and you are correct the problem with it is the case statement works when highlight execution. But I have a main case statement in the loop that either allows the state machine loops to execute or hides them and that case switches during single stepping to true or false. So that was the reason I sent the first e-mail since I could see that case change but not the smaller one. But if that is the fix well I'll run with it and use the execution highlight to see the case statement switch.
Thanks Again.

Hi,
I have query with a case statement as follows:
SELECT * FROM table
WHERE
CASE WHEN :variable like 'A' THEN column END is null
WHEN :variable like 'B' THEN column END is not null;
This works fine when returning "column is null" but not when "column is not null".
Can I use a CASE statement like this?
Thanks
LucyMy data is too complicated to show, but depending on the value of the bind variable in the statement I want to return all the rows in a query where the data in a particular column is either null or not null.For example, looking at the EMP table, if my bind variable is whether I want to show the top manager or not, if set to 'Yes' I would like to return all rows of the EMP table where mgr is null (i.e. the one row where ename is 'KING'), if it were set to 'No' I would like to return all the rows where mgr is not null (i.e. all the other rows). The difference with my query is that the column contains strings, not numerics.
I've used a CASE statement before where I equate the column to a particular value and that works fine, but I'm not sure how they deal with nulls. I've also tried DECODE and didn't get anywhere with that.
Thanks

Pivoting using Model Clause Vs pivoting using Aggregate Fun(Case) statement
Hi,
I just wanted to know which option is better for pivoting the data if the data is like:
Grp1 Grp2 Day_week Sales
1 1 Sun 200
1 1 Mon 100
1 2 Sun 1000
and so on...
The output should be:
Grp1 Grp2 Sun Mon ......
1 1 200 100.....
1 2 1000 NULL....
I have tested the same using sum(decode...) method and also model clause:
select grp1, grp2, sum(decode(day_week,'SUN',sales)) SUNDAY , sum(decode(day_week,'MON',sales)) MONDAY from pivot
group by grp1, grp2
order by grp1, grp2
select grp1, grp2, sun , mon, tue, wed, thr, fri, sat
from pivot
model -- UNIQUE SINGLE REFERENCE
return updated rows
partition by (grp1, grp2)
dimension by ( day_week)
measures( result, 0 mon, 0 tue, 0 wed, 0 thr,0 fri, 0 sat, 0 sun)
RULES upsert
mon[0]= sales['MON'],
tue[0]= sales['TUE'],
wed[0]= sales['WED'],
thr[0]= sales['THR'],
fri[0]= sales['FRI'],
sat[0]= sales['SAT'],
sun[0]= sales['SUN']
) order by grp1, grp2
There are 4K records in the table. The first query is taking app (.125 seconds) and the second query (.230 seconds).
Pls tell how the model clause can give better performance and I want to use it for pivoting in all my APIs.

Rajiv> I read somewhere while searching on net.
And now you can't find it anymore? I wouldn't believe anything you read somewhere while searching on net, unless it has some kind of proof attached.
> You pls tell is it so or it depends upon volume of data.
Also i tested on some data and reults were better in
case of using normal startegy rather than model.(case
provided above).
So you have tested it yourself already. The model clause is great in a few cases (string aggregation, calculating values based on calculated values), but this doesn't seem to be one of them. On 11g you might want to consider the PIVOT operator.

Using a scalar user defined function in a select case statement
I have a simple select statement below and I want to have a case statement for some conditions based on the result of the udf returned value. I then want the returned value from that specific case statement to be returned where i have indicated 'DISPLAY
ZIPCODE' below.
SELECT
CASE
WHEN (SELECT Top 1 ZipCode FROM ufn_GetAddressByBusinessEntityIDandAddressTypeID(table1.BusinessEntityID,712) IS NOT NULL THEN 'DISPLAY ZIPCODE'
WHEN (SELECT Top 1 ZipCode FROM ufn_GetAddressByBusinessEntityIDandAddressTypeID(table1.BusinessEntityID,714) as r) IS NOT NULL THEN 'DISPLAY ZIPCODE'
ELSE NULL
END as Zipcode,
FROM
table1SELECT COALESCE(ufn_GetAddressByBusinessEntityIDandAddressTypeID(table1.BusinessEntityID,712),ufn_GetAddressByBusinessEntityIDandAddressTypeID(table1.BusinessEntityID,712)) AS Zipcode
FROM table1
Nope. This is two function calls. coalesce(a, b, c, ...) is just syntatic sugar for
CASE WHEN a IS NOT NULL THEN a
WHEN b IS NOT NULL THEN b
WHEN c IS NOT NULL THEN c
END
But if you use isnull it's a different matter. (But isnull() permits two arguments.)

Query Tuning - using CASE statement in the WHERE clause
Hi All,

[Oracle 8i] Handling null in case statement
The following bit of my query is causing the error 'inconsistent datatypes':
CASE
WHEN b.days_diff < 0
THEN plan_start
ELSE plan_start + b.days_diff
ENDThe problem is that b.days_diff can be null.
I've tried to work around this, by using the NVL statement and by nesting 2 case statements to try to deal with the null, but can't seem to work around it.
Does anyone have anything else I can try?Apologies...internet server went down yesterday...
I've had this issue before with my database. When I look at user_tab_columns, it says plan_start is a date. However, I have had to use TO_DATE in the past with it to get some things to work. It's very odd, and I have no idea why it's like that.
Anyway, below, I have provided some sample data, and the full query I'm trying to run:

Need help in this query using Case Statement
I have the following query which is currently existing and I am adding few more conditions based on the new requirements which is based on a particular flag set as 1 or 0.
If it is set to 1 then I should use the old query as it is and if it is set to 0 then I should add the new conditions.
Basically when the flag is set to 0, I shouldnt be including some of the records that already exists and should include only new records. This is based on the plan_type_ids in (1,2,3,4).
Hence I am using the Case statement to check if the plan_type_id is in (1,2) then do a set of not exists and if the plan_type_id in (3,4) then do set of not exists.
But when I run this query it is giving me error. What am I doing wrong?
Is there any other simple way to combine all the not exists for all of those select statements as given after the line ------------------------- into a single one?
What am I doing wrong?
I tried putting the NOT EXists before the case too but that too didnt work.
Please help. Appreciate it.
Thank you in advance.

Using NOT comparison in SQL with Intermedia
Ok, I have an issue where I am trying to create a search engine the most efficient way. I am using Oracle 8.1.7 and Java. I can't always use the Intermedia ~ as there has to be a comparison.
Basically, there are cases when the not can be chosen and the criteria are from different zones in the index. For example if choose a type of Title and value of The Stand and type Author not Stephen King. The following is not valid, as Title is WITHIN TITLE and Author is WITHIN CTBR. And no I can't add one to the other zone.
select ttl_id from table where CONTAINS(KYWD, '(${The}) & (${Stand}) WITHIN TITLE AND ((${The}) & (${Stand})) ~ ((${Stephen}) & {${King})) WITHIN CTBR') > 0
This will not work properly as The Stand is not present in CTBR. So the alternative so far is this:
select ttl_id from table where CONTAINS(KYWD, '(${The}) & (${Stand}) WITHIN TITLE') > 0 AND ttl_id NOT IN (Select ttl_id from table where CONTAINS(KYWD, '((${Stephen}) & {${King})) WITHIN CTBR') > 0)
This is not the prefered option as the full table search that may be repeated in this query if all 5 nots are chosen with different criteria. This as you can imagine is to slow. So any ideas would be helpful.
ThanksHi Eric -
I'd recommend that you post this question to the Intermedia/Text forum. While we all love Java here, our knowledge of Intermedia is likely to not be as good as the guru's of the Text/Intermedia world.

Using Field/Column Date Value In Case Statement
I have code that the first part works (the part that evaluates null). However, it appears the second part doesn't work. The error I get is:
Data Value out of range
Can you use the a table column value in a Case statement? What I'm trying to do is: where all mbr06..values are 12/31/9999, then null; if mbr06.. values are equal to or less than today's date, then put the value in mbr02.mbr02_cancel_proc_date..
Note, the table MBR02 does have dates that go back as far as 11/17/1858..could that be an issue?
Thanks for any assistance..
cast((case
when mbr06.mbr06_exp_date = to_date('31-dec-9999') then null
when mbr06.mbr06_exp_date <= sysdate then mbr02.mbr02_cancel_proc_dateThe error is due to the CAST, not to the CASE.
Cause: Value from cast operand is larger than cast target size.Post at least the whole cast ...

Using case statement in merge when matched
Hi,
I want to use case statement in the when matched clause of merge statement to ensure that I update only those fields that are undated.
create table TEST1
NAME1 VARCHAR2(25),
NAME2 VARCHAR2(25),
ID NUMBER not null
create table TEST2
ID NUMBER not null,
ID2 NUMBER not null,
NAME1 VARCHAR2(25),
NAME2 VARCHAR2(25)
merge into test1 t1
using
test2 t2
ON (t1.id = t2.id)
when matched
then
case
when t1.name1 != t2.name1
then
update set t1.name1 != t2.name1
when t1.name2 != t2.name2
then
update set t1.name2 != t2.name2
else
null;
end
it does not work and raises invalid sql command. Any idea how can I do that?
Thanks.

In that case you would have to use multiple statements and you may as well just use UPDATE instead of MERGE. Also, are you sure that you aren't trying to to fix a problem that doesn't actually exist.
Think about where the execution time is going to come from...
I would be tempted to do 1 UPDATE like this...
UPDATE test1 t1
SET (t1.name1,
t1.name2) = (SELECT t2.name1,
t2.name2
FROM test2 t2
WHERE t1.id = t2.id
AND (t1.name1 != t2.name1
OR t1.name2 != t2.name2))If you get specific performance issue with this, then post an explain plan and trace and I'll have a look.
I don't this the cost of the update is going to be as great as you think.
Cheers

Using Case statement to insert,update,delete the tables
Hi All,
I have to check the databse ,
if it is developement then
insert/update/delete values in tables;
if it staging then
insert/update/delete values in tables;
if it is production then
insert/update/delete values in tables;
thers is function available to check the current database
For doing the about i am trying to write CASE statement like this
SELECT function,
case
when fun = 'developement' then insert into table1 values ('abcd','1234')
when fun = 'staging' then insert into table1 values ('abcd','1234')
when fun= 'production' then insert into table1 values ('abcd','1234')
else null
from dual
its throughing me an error
please help
Thanks,Hi,
You can use CASE staement any place where an expression is expected.
For example, in:
UPDATE table_a
SET col1 = exp1
, col2 = exp2
WHERE exp3 = exp4;all the expressions are labled lke expn.
Note that table_a, col1 and col2 are not expressions: you must hard-code these names, or use dynamic SQL.
So it's okay to say:
UPDATE table_a
SET col1 = CASE
WHEN db = 'development' THEN 0
WHEN db = 'staging' THEN 1
END
, col2 = CASE
WHEN db = 'development' THEN NULL
WHEN db = 'staging' THEN col2
END
WHERE db != 'production';In this example:
in the development database, col1 is set to 0 and col2 is set to NULL
in the staging database, col1 is set to 1 and col2 is unchanged (that is, set to what it already was)
in the production database, nothing is changed (the WHERE condition is always FALSE) -
Hi,
I have a scenario where my stored procedure takes 5 parameters and the users can pass NULL or some value to these parameters and based on the parameters, I need to pull data from various tables.
Is it possible to use a case statement in the join, similar the one in the below example. I'm getting error when I use the below type of statement.
select a.*
from a
case
when parameter1=1 then
inner join a on a.id = b.id
when parameter1=2 then
inner join a on a.id = c.id
end;
Please let me know, if this type of statement works, and if it works will it create any performance issues?. If the above doesn't work, could you please give me some alternate solutions?
Thanks.Here's a technique for joining A to B or C depending on the input parameters. In theory, you are joining to both tables but the execution plan includes filters to skip whichever join is not appropriate. The drawback is that you have to do outer joins, not inner ones.
CREATE TABLE A AS SELECT LEVEL ak FROM dual CONNECT BY LEVEL <= 100;
CREATE TABLE b AS SELECT ak, bk
FROM A, (SELECT LEVEL bk FROM dual CONNECT BY LEVEL <= 10);
CREATE TABLE c(ak, ck) AS SELECT ak, bk*10 FROM b;
variable p1 NUMBER;
variable p2 NUMBER;
exec :p1 := 1;
exec :p2 := 20;
SELECT /*+ gather_plan_statistics */ A.ak, nvl(b.bk, c.ck) otherk FROM A
LEFT JOIN b ON A.ak = b.ak AND :p1 IS NOT NULL AND b.bk = :p1
LEFT JOIN c ON A.ak = c.ak AND :p1 is null and :p2 IS NOT NULL and c.ck = :p2
WHERE A.ak <= 9;
SELECT * FROM TABLE(dbms_xplan.display_cursor(NULL,NULL,'IOSTATS LAST'));
| Id | Operation | Name | Starts | E-Rows | A-Rows | A-Time | Buffers |
| 0 | SELECT STATEMENT | | 1 | | 9 |00:00:00.01 | 7 |
|* 1 | HASH JOIN OUTER | | 1 | 9 | 9 |00:00:00.01 | 7 |
|* 2 | HASH JOIN OUTER | | 1 | 9 | 9 |00:00:00.01 | 7 |
|* 3 | TABLE ACCESS FULL | A | 1 | 9 | 9 |00:00:00.01 | 3 |
| 4 | VIEW | VW_DCL_5532A50F | 1 | 9 | 9 |00:00:00.01 | 4 |
|* 5 | FILTER | | 1 | | 9 |00:00:00.01 | 4 |
|* 6 | TABLE ACCESS FULL| B | 1 | 9 | 9 |00:00:00.01 | 4 |
| 7 | VIEW | VW_DCL_5532A50F | 1 | 9 | 0 |00:00:00.01 | 0 |
|* 8 | FILTER | | 1 | | 0 |00:00:00.01 | 0 |
|* 9 | TABLE ACCESS FULL | C | 0 | 9 | 0 |00:00:00.01 | 0 |
Predicate Information (identified by operation id):
1 - access("A"."AK"="ITEM_0")
2 - access("A"."AK"="ITEM_1")
3 - filter("A"."AK"<=9)
5 - filter(:P1 IS NOT NULL)
6 - filter(("B"."AK"<=9 AND "B"."BK"=:P1))
8 - filter((:P2 IS NOT NULL AND :P1 IS NULL))
9 - filter(("C"."AK"<=9 AND "C"."CK"=:P2))
You can see that table C was not really accessed: the buffer count is 0.
exec :p1 := NULL;
WHERE A.ak <= 9;
SELECT * FROM TABLE(dbms_xplan.display_cursor(NULL,NULL,'IOSTATS LAST'));
Now table B is not accessed.
