Using a file backup for a fresh iTunes install?

Recently the Window 7 system I keep my iTunes music database on died, and won't boot. Fortunately, I have a fresh backup of the system disk on an external drive that was made using the backup software Macrium Reflect. The entire iTunes song database (~100 GB) is also on an iPod Classic.
Though some music was bought from Apple's store, most was imported from audio CDs. Thus I gather I can't restore the database to a new PC from the iPod, and my database wouldn't be downloadable from Apple.
My thought was to do a clean install of iTunes on the new Windows 7 system I'll be buying, then bring in the directory area (is this something like \Users\Frank\My Music\iTunes ?) from the backup of the old system. If I do this, will the new install of iTunes recognize these files? Or is there anything I would need to do to make it import them? Or, is there a better/easier way to accomplish what I need to do? Thanks in advance --

It should just be a question of restoring the entire iTunes folder structure from the backup data set into the <User's Music> folder of your new computer. I would suggest you do this before installing iTunes rather than the other way around.
If for some reason the library wasn't in a standard layout with all the media inside the iTunes Media folder then things get a bit more complicated as your restored library would be looking for the media on the original absolute file paths. If that turns out to be an issue I can make suggestions for resolving it.

I have on airport express that is 5  years old, I now have a new wireless router.  I want to  use the express just for air waving iTunes.  How do I set it up?

    Hello 84wvu,
It sounds like you want to setup your Airport Express to Airplay music from iTunes.  I found an article with steps to help you get this setup:
Connecting to an existing Wi-Fi network, exclusively for iTunes music
AirPort Express used exclusively for AirPlay by setting it up in Client Mode.
Choose this configuration if the computer containing your iTunes library may be out of direct range of the AirPort Express, but is within range of the Wi-Fi network.
    How to Set It Up
Connect your AirPort Express to your home stereo or powered speakers.
From your computer, join the wireless network. Use the AirPort status menu in the menu bar on a Mac. On a Windows-based computer, hold the pointer over the wireless connection icon until you see your AirPort network name (SSID), and choose it from the list if there are multiple networks available. Enter the network password, if necessary.
Open iTunes on your computer and choose the AirPort Express(es) you wish to stream music through from the speakers pop-up menu in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window.
I also recommend reviewing the sections titled "Some things you should know about AirPort Express with AirPlay" and "Things to consider before you begin" in the full article:

  • Using Time Machine backup for file transfers

    Hello,
I have successfully used TM to backup my MBP.
How can I use the files on my external hard drive that were put there by TM to transfer files to another computer. I want to plug my external into another computer and access the backup on the harddrive, as if it were a large flash drive.

You cannot. You can use the drive to backup the other computer, but I don't believer it's possible to restore files from the other backup library.
A TM backup is not a simple file copy. You cannot just access files as though you had copied them to another drive. If that's your intent then TM is not the proper tool. Instead you should clone the drive using a third-party backup tool such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner - VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Then the files on the backup drive can be accessed just like any other drive.

  • Import tables using same file name for all tables

    hi,
We are using oracle 11.2.0.3.0, we have taken export of multiple tables in schema, unfortunately in exp command we have mention same file name for all the tables, now it has created one file for all export but the size of that file shows that all the tables included in it , when we try to import the tables only last table mention in export command is imported for other tables it hangs, example of code show below.
Is there any way to import the remaining tables.
    exp system file =exp05042013.dmp tables=gr.table1
    exp system file =exp05042013.dmp tables=gr.table2
    exp system file =exp05042013.dmp tables=gr.table3

  • HT204053 What's the best way to set up a family of devices in order to use one apple id for purchases on itunes and the app store?

we are trying to face time between devices, but it won't work whn multiple devices are tied to one apple id.
How do you designate one id to pay for purchases and one so that we can facetime from device to device?

The ID used for purchasing is in Settings>Store.  This ID does not need to be the same one used for other services such as FaceTime, iMessage, etc. (in fact you're far better off if you use separate Apple IDs for these other services).  To change the ID used for iMessage, go to Settings>Messages>Receive At, tap the ID at the top, sign out, then sign back in using a separate (and unique) ID.  You can similarly change the ID used for FaceTime in Settings>FaceTime.  To sycn data with iCloud such as calendars, contacts, etc., without merging your data across devices, set up different iCloud account with different Apple IDs for each device.  You can go to Settings>iCloud and turn off syncing for your data, and when prompted, choose to keep the data on the device.  Then scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  Then set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID for each device and turn data syncing back on in Settings>iCloud.

  • Looks like a Fresh ITunes install!

Win Vista computer w/latest version of itunes installed.  When I double clicked the desktop icon yesterday it reinstalled and now doesn't know where my apps and movies are.  It found my music but lost my playlists. It looks like a "fresh" install.  Settings look factory and straight out of the box.  What happened, why did it happen, and how do I get my playlists back?

File > Add to libary and select the iTunes media folder in the Shared location.
I have changed the preferences for all users to use this directroy as the itunes media folder location.
This simply points each users iTunes library iTunes to use that folder for their media.
3 of the 4 users can access the library, playing and downloading music.
They have their own libraries and use the same iTunes media folder.
When the 4th user opens itunes, the itunes library is not recoginized, it looks like a fresh install
because nothing was ever added to their library.
even though they are referencing the user/shared/mymusic/itunes directory.
As noted, that is simply the location of the media. It still needs to be added to their library.

  • Minimum Files needed for bare bones XP Install?`

    Hello
I'm new here having recently bought my first MBP. Does anyone know the minimum files needed for a custom (lite) XP Pro install using BootCamp?
All I want to run is DV-Rack plus maybe 1 or 2 other programs but I don't want to waste space on my 200gb HD. I do't even want to install MS Office because I like iWorks better.
    Thanks
    Allen

My recommendation is nothing short of 12GB. For your purposes, that you indicated in your post, 12GB should be fine. Please also consider any future uses that you may have for Windows XP. I have seen several times, on this forum, where a user sets the partition too low and then wishes to increase the size and it cannot be done unless Boot Camp and Windows is re-installed from scratch.
If you can afford the disk space then I would even recommend 32GB and that would allow you to have some space left for future programs if any.

  • Charging/Power Support for iPod without iTunes Installed

I have an 80 GB iPod that I load and manage on my home system. Is there a way that I can plug the iPod into the USB port on a Windows laptop that does NOT have iTunes installed and listen to music already on the device? I want only the power from the laptop USB which is a corporate machine, i.e., can't put iTunes on it. I tried it and I get the "Do Not Disconnect" screen and the device is unusable.
      Windows XP Pro

Look on the system for new hardware found. Just eject it there and it should allow the regular screen to come up. If I remember correctly it comes up in the lower right hand side of the bar at the bottom of the windows screen.

  • HT1751 Hi.        I want to transfer my iTunes library from my pc to either my new MacBook Air or ideally to an external hard drive that I use as a backup for my Air. I would want to be able to sync the iPod with the library on the hard drive. I

    Hi there
I would like to transfer my iTunes library from my PC to my MacBook Air or if possible to an external hard drive that I use to back up my Air.
I understand that you can't use the same hard drive for PC and Mac.
Would really like to do away with the PC and sync the iPod to the Air.
Am about to purchase a new iPod nano as my Classic is broken.
    Would appreciate any feedback please!!

You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g
If you want to use the drive exclusively with your Mac then move the data off it and reformat it in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) as Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

  • Can I use ICloud as backup for my huge movie archive ?

Hi Mac Friends, first I have to admit that I am not a computer expert, but willing to learn. I have many movies stored on 2 external HDD's, approx 3,5 TB, and I am scared of loosing data for any stupid reason. What's the best, saving data on another HDD, or using ICloud ? Thanks to all who are responding

You can't use iCloud for general file storage such as your movies.  There are other cloud-based options available that will, some of which are listed here on Roger Wilmut's site: http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/missing/inicloud3.html.
If might be cheaper to just copy them to another external HDD or two, and save these offsite or in a fire safe if you're concerned about losing them.

  • HT1926 Why ,when Itry to install the latest update for iTunes does it say that my iTunes signature is "invalid" when I have used this same computer for years and have installed all the previous updates? Thank you.

Why, when I try to install the latest iTunes update, itsays that I have an "invalid" signature...I have used this same machine and have installed all the previous updates with no problem.

That one suggests the installer has gotten damaged during the download.
I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

  • Been using Windows formatted ipod for months SUDDENLY itunes cant recognize

I've been using my Windows formatted first edition 30gb Video ipod with my Mac Pro itunes since last April when I got it. Now suddenly(before new itunes upgrade) it says it cannot identify my ipod because it is formatted for Windows and that I need to restore it, formatting it for Mac.
Why has this happened after it working fine for so long?
It wouldn't be that big of deal but I have a lot of music on this ipod that I don't have anymore in any other place.
    What can I do?

Is that something that happened AFTER you updated to iTunes 8, assuming you did?
You might try something like Yamipod, which is free and available for both Windows and Mac, that you can use to read the stuff off the iPod into your computer that isn't already in your library.
    Cheers,
    Patrick
