  • Sharing external FireWire drive between two Mac Pros

I know that sharing an external FireWire drive between two machines (i.e. both connected at the same time) is a very bad things as both will assume that they have exclusive write access to the drive and quite quickly write over what the other machine has just written.
Would it be possible though to mount the drive as read-only on the first machine and in read-write mode on the second? Would this preserve integrity as the second machine would in fact have exclusive write access or would other problems arise?
Thanks for any responses to a stupid question!

Mmm, Connect the drive to the private secure network Mac. Connect the two Macs by FireWire and create a network over the firewire connection, configure it to use class C addresses, ie. 169.x.x.x manually and then share the firewire drive to the other Mac (also on a class C network address over firewire).
Both macs will still have their own ethernet network addresses and each network will not be visible from the "other" network (unless you choose to share your internet connection over firewire).
The only caveat here is that the firewire drive will be visible to every other Mac on the secure network that you allow to connect to it (which is why I chose that one, rather than the public Mac). Or can you restrict sharing to only one network ..... didn't think so.

  • I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer applications from my imac to macbook. Using either a firewire or network, as I'm waiting to select items to migrate, I receive an error message that "the application quit unexpectedly". My imac is newer.

I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer applications from my newer imac to an older macbook (10.5.8).  I keep getting an error message "application quit unexpectedly" as I'm waiting to select the items to migrate.  I've tried using a firewire cable as well as just a network connection.
    Thank you.

    Here is some information:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889
It mentions that migration is not supported with 10.4; now you said you have 10.5 - it may be the same problem. Besides, migration assistant will recognize an older system and move apps etc. over to a newer system - I'm not sure it will do the same thing in reverse.
And, there are a couple more problems: one is that your newer versions may not be backwards compatible with the old 10.5 and the second is that is you are trying to copy apps so you can use them on both, it most likely violates the SLA (unless you purchased them on MAS).
So, if none of those two apply, I'd simply try target disk mode (without the assistant) and drag over the apps.

  • I keep getting input/output error put when trying to make a complet copy of my hard drive, which also has vista using fusion.i have did the permissions and repaired, disk verify.

Yes. Formatted correctly. It' s new ext HD and I made a the first back up on it a few days ago using time machine while my computer was in safe mode. When I was able to restart my computer normally I quickly set up a time machine backup to my larger 5 TB ext drive. Also new and formatted for my mac. I was in a rush to get it going before I left for work so maybe I did something wrong. IDK. I can't remember but it did ask me about switching drives vs setting up. Although I don't see why the computer wouldn't see the drive.
I did try another firewire cable and no change. Checked connections again.  The HD turns on and the blue light comes on  (it's a La Cie d2 quadra deskdrive)
Is the SMC reset where you detach devices and restart?  My printer, keyboard and mouse are all wireless and right now I don't have anything else connected.
I'll try another PRAM reset too.
    *  Question:
When I connect the 3 TB drive it starts up but I don't see it on my desktop, finder sidebar or in disk utility. If a hard drive starts up but doesn't show up on your computer how do you safely shut it down before disconnecting?  I've been clicking on the desktop and then pressing the eject button on my keyboard just in case.

  • What accounts are used for video iChat between two Macs?

I need to set up video iChat between a 10.6.8 Snow Leopard laptop and a 10.5.8 iMac.  The machines are not on the same network.  I have read all the posts and the help for iChat but the explanations of accounts are confusing.  What accounts can be used for Mac-to-Mac video chat and how do we set them up?

    Hi,
    AIM or Jabber.
AIM valid accounts include any @mac.com ID (Lapsed, paid for (originally) or a Trial account) Any @me.com account that was linked to iCloud at the change to iCloud from MobileMe. And of course any @icloud.com ID.
If you have an Apple ID that started as one of these and "Migrated" to the other services other the years and is linked for Email they will work as separate IDs/Valid Screen Names with the AIM servers.
Effectively this then works Mac to Mac in Messages or iChat.
    Jabber IDs.
Many servers http://www.jabberes.org/servers/ (this is only some and the site also list many that are Off line)
Also Google run what was called the GoogleTalk server which means Google Mail IDs can be used as Jabber IDs
Facebook run a separate Chat ID/Server which you have to sign up for at Facebook.
AS most server are what is called "Federated" you can add Jabber Buddies form one server to a Buddy List of another.
Therefore you may have a Google Buddy list as such but you can add Facebook Buddies  or other Buddies on other Jabber servers.
Audio and Video Chat are Mac to Mac.  You cannot Video or Audio chat to Web Browser login even if the Browser has the video plugin for that service  (Basically web browser to web browser chat require the Video plugin for that service/server).
    FaceTime will not work.
You can download FaceTime for the Snow Leopard Computer as it is an Intel only app.
However it cannot be downloaded for the Leopard computer.
    Summary.
You may have IDs that will work in iChat 4 and 5 already (Apple IDs as AIM Names or Googlemail or Facebook IDs)
Chats are then Mac to Mac (and also AIM to AIM or Jabber to Jabber but not AIM to Jabber).
iChat will allow you also to do Screen Sharing as well as Audio Only chats

  • Problem using migration assistant to transfer from iBook G4 to new Macbook

This is probably a very simple issue but I am a luddite. I can connect the old iBook and new MacBook by firewire and commence the migration assistant process. However, towards the end of the transfer I get a message saying that there has been a problem and I need to check all connections. The Macbook is wirelessly online (via Time Capsule) but the iBook is not online - is this the problem? Or is it that the iBook software (OS 10.3.9) is out of date?

You're lucky it isn't working. I would not use MA. You may end up overwriting Intel files with PPC files causing your computer to become dysfunctional. Instead connect them via Firewire. Boot the iBook into Target Disk Mode and the MacBook normally. The iBook's drive should appear on the MacBooks Desktop. You can then manually transfer your files. The following will help you with what you need to copy:
Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)

  • Using a common library between two Mac accounts

My wife and I are using our first Mac and taking/organizing pictures is a passion for both of us. Aperture is proving to be a great product, but one failing thus far is our ability to use a common Aperture library that we can use from both of our Mac accounts.
I have placed our Aperture Library in a shared folder and updated the permission on this library file (package actually) and all its enclosed files to allow Read/Write for both of our accounts. While each of our accounts can launch Aperture and view the pictures, once an edit is made, thumbnails regenerated, new pictures uploaded, etc..., Aperture keeps changing the file permissions on the underlying files (like the thumbnail file) to Read/Write only to the current account and Read to the staff/everyone group. Essentially, any previous permissions that I may have added are wiped away by Aperture . The primary effect of this is that the thumbnails basically disappear when being viewed from the other account (i.e., they are all gray).
Does anyone know a workaround for this problem? It seems like there should be a way to tell Aperture to use the default permissions assigned to its Aperture Library package. Any help would be most appreciated since my only "workaround" thus far is to always use Aperture from one of our accounts.

Well, I believe you are correct with the native OS; however, there was a nifty little workaround that seems to be the fit I was looking for:
    1. I created a new Image that will store the Aperture Library with "no ownership"
    2. I set the permissions on the resulting .dmg file to Read&Write for me, my wife, everyone, and staff.
    3. I moved my existing Aperture Library file onto the new image.
    4. I created the following AppleScript and saved it as an "Application" type (which launches when you click it)
-- We must unmount (detach) the AperturePhotos image in order
-- to make sure the launcher of Aperture is the one who mounts the disk image.
-- This way, the launcher becomes the "owner" of the image and all files are Read/Write to owner
    tell application "Finder"
    if (exists "AperturePhotos") then
do shell script "hdiutil detach /Volumes/AperturePhotos"
    end if
do shell script "hdiutil attach /Users/Shared/ApertureImage.dmg"
    end tell
-- Simply launch Aperture after mounting the Aperture Image
    tell application "Aperture"
    activate
    end tell
    5. Changed the icon of the AppleScript file to the Aperture Icon and place this script in the Dock
    6. Changed the Aperture preferences to find the library on the new volume.
What this now does for me is automatically unmounts and remounts the disk image as the person launching Aperture and therefore becomes the owner of the files while using the app. It works just like I wanted. Hopefully, I will not run into any snags along the way .
    Thanks again for your help.

  • How to use 1 time capsule between two macs

We have a mac and a mac book pro. How do we separate them on my time capsule so they dont share caledars, address books, etc?

Ok, isn't there a setting to set a password for your calendar?
    But try this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2513?viewlocale=en_EN#
    Check 'public your calendar'
Apple says that you HAVE TO PUBLISH your calendar. So I think that it isn't shared by default.
Check if you calendar is shared or not.
So I think that you son isn't able to sync your calendar, because you need 'account informations' to sync/connect an iPhone with a calendar.
And you SYNC your data and don't make backups on time capsule?
Because if you make backups from your mac and if you have protected your mac-account with a passwort, he can't access your data.

  • How to access files between two Macs via Firewire cable?

I would like to access and copy some files from my PowerMac to my Mac mini. I am using a Firewire cable to connect the two computers, and I get the Firewire symbol floating around on my monitor, but nothing beyond that, and I don't know what the next step is to get to the desktop. Help?
(I also posted this question as part of an already "answered" post by another user... sorry for posting this twice.)

    Hi BDAqua,
Sorry I dropped this thread last month; I would still love to figure this out, but haven't had time to deal with it since then. (In the meantime, I copied the files from the old computer - G3 - to CDs, in order to access them on the computer I use now - Mini/OS Tiger.) Anyway, so I'm writing to say thanks, and hopefully I will pick this thread up again soon... and hope you'll be around to help at that point.
(By the way, the floating firewire icon was the only thing that came up on the monitor, and nothing I did brought me to the desktop: no key, click or prayer did anything to move beyond that floating icon. So, I couldn't get an orange FW icon, or any HD icon at all, since there was only the floating icon, and nothing else...)
    Thanks again.

  • How to transfer files between two Macs via Firewire cable?

I heard you can transfer selected files between two Macs running Tiger. I'm not talking about setting up a new Mac w. files from an older one, if that's different? Can someone enlighten me on this or point me to a "how-to" link? Thanks.

Yes, you pretty much just drag and drop or copy and paste depending on which way you like better. It is pretty much like connecting an external hard drive. Just find the files you want and copy them over to your other computer.
This is one of my favorite features from Macs. It's very simple to do and because it's Firewire even large files transfer over very quickly.

I recently moved and had to disconnect my WD My Pro Edition II 2TB external drive I had been using for backup.
Its been several months (many upgrades to the iMac software during this time), and now when I try to reconnect the external dire (Use a firewire cable) it does not recognize the drive is there.  I also tried "reloading" software from the Western Digital site, but after following all the instructions, it looks like my iMac doesn't support this software (I can't even locate it after I follow all the instructions.
Thnaks,  for anyones ideas on how I can get this working again.....

First of all, you do not really want to use their software; if you want a bootable clone, use either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. If you simply want to drag and drop some files, you don't need software to do that. The important thing on any external drive is that you format/partition it correctly (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and using GUID partition scheme).
Unfortunately, I don't know anything about WD drives or their software, so I don't have any idea what kind of backup you did. Having said that, it should still recognize the external even if it's outdated. Have you tried mounting it manually in Disk Utility? If you can get it to mount, you could (worst case scenario) just drag your stuff off onto your internal and then reformat the external.

  • I used an ethernet cable between my iMac and Time Capsule for the initial backup.  Now that initial backup is concluded, can I simply unplug the Time Capsule from my computer?

I used an ethernet cable between my iMac and Time Capsule for the initial backup.  Now that initial backup is concluded, can I assume I can simply unplug the Time Capsule from my computer without any glitches and Time Capsule will then run wirelessly.  Is this assumption correct?

can I assume I can simply unplug the Time Capsule from my computer without any glitches and Time Capsule will then run wirelessly.  Is this assumption correct?
Yes, if the computer will be able to receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule.
I did not disable wireless.  So I assume the backups are occurring both with the ethernet and wirelessly.
It is inot possible to have both an "active" Ethernet and "active" wireless signal simultaneously. If an Ethernet connection is established, your computer will default to the Ethernet connection. If the Ethernet cable is unplugged, the computer will revert to the wireless connection.
I also show 2 wireless networks available through Airport.  Shouldn't there only be one now?
You have a simultaneous dual band Time Capsule. That means that it will always be providing both a 2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz network.
I named my new network the same name as the old network.  This enabled all of our devices to continue with their connection without entering the new network and/or passwords; however, I am afraid this may pose problems in the future somehow.  Any input on this issue as well?
Things should be fine. Devices will connect to the best signal.....either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz....based on their capabilties and location in relation to the Time Capsule.
