Using a FW drive to reinstall OSX - can I use one image for all my Macs?

I am setting up an external firewire drive to allow me to reinstall from the drive rather than from the DVDs. The question I have is whether I need to make separate partitions for each Mac I have from their original discs or whether I can use the same install discs for different Macs?
Thanks,
David

Hello Sherman,
I use an External FW drive just like that, I have a partition that is the Installer 10.4 - it's so much faster than using the DVD's ! - and another which is a normal install which also has DMG's of our SOE for easily and quickly wiping machines and installing everything at once...
If you have a number of computers - I've got over 200 to look after - a FW drive with installs and soe's and Disk Utils is an absolute must have !

  • My 2009 MacBook Pro keeps restarting even after I wiped the hard drive and reinstalled OSX.

    About a month ago, my laptop started to randomly turn off: I would be using either Chrome, Photoshop (the free CS2 version available from Adobe's website) or Powerpoint, and the screen would go blank. I would then have to hold the power button for a while until the little light at the front of the computer would flicker and it would restart. I brought it to the Mac Store where they tested it and said it looked fine. They suggested I erase my hard drive and reinstall OSX as a precaution.
    Fast forward a month, I have been very busy with work and hadn't been able to fix this problem. It wasn't that bad, only once every couple of days, sometimes more, sometimes less, I could work despite this problem.
    Then, I installed OSX Mavericks. The installation started in the morning, but, like an idiot, I paused it to go to work. Later on, I completed the installation, it looked fine, but then all day long my laptop would suddenly restart and go to a grey screen that said in multiple languages "Your laptop restarted because of a problem, press any button to continue the restart." A computer technician friend of mine checked it out and said it was probably due to the badly installed OSX and suggested that I erase my hard drive and reinstall OSX.
    I backed up all my files, erased the hard drive and reinstalled OSX. Everything looked fine.
    Then it happened again.
    Any ideas of why this is happening?

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    How do I use Internet recovery feature to reinstall osx lion?

    Restart with the COMMAND+OPTION+R keys pressed and held until you see a spinning globe. This boots into Internet Recovery and the Apple servers. You can then download/install the most current version of OS X that was pre-installed on your Mini.
    To restart into the Recovery HD, press and hold the COMMAND+R keys until you see the Apple logo. This boots into Recovery Mode from your internal drive's Recovery HD. You can then download/install the most current version of OS X that is installed on your Mini.

    my iPhoto icon has a cross over it, when i open it, it You have “iPhoto” 9.2.1. you can't use this with this version of OSX? it used to work ?what's gone wrong?

    iPhoto 9.2.3 is incompatible with MacOS 10.9.3 Mavericks. If you are running Mavericks on your system you need to update iPhoto to 9.5.1. Only, the problem is, that this version is no longer available at the App Store.
    The easiest way to get a compatible iPhoto version in that case would be to upgrade to Yosemite, MacOS X 10.10, and then download the most recent iPhoto version from the AppStore, iiPhoto 9.6, like LarryHN suggested.
    If you cannot download iPhoto after upgrading to iPhoto 9.6 post back.

  • Does the new iMac coming in December have a dvd drive? If not can you use the Apple USB SuperDrive?

    Does the new iMac coming in December have a dvd drive? If not can you use the Apple USB SuperDrive?

    The soon to be released new iMacs don't have a DVD drive. I don't believe that Apple have updated their site to say their USB drive will work, but the expectation is that it will.
    I watched the keynote and when Phil Schiller was presenting the new models I think he mentioned something about it working and he had one on the desk next to the iMac.
    I'm going to check the keynote if it's still up and I'll update my post if I'm wrong.

  • I am trying to export photos and keep receiving an error message. I tried relocating my catalog to see if that would help since I am saving to an external drive, but now I can't find my catalog at all either.

    I am trying to export photos and keep receiving an error message. I tried relocating my catalog to see if that would help since I am saving to an external drive, but now I can't find my catalog at all either. I am a newbie at this and don't know what I'm doing wrong or if I can even use an external drive for my photos and catalogs (I did enable smart previews so I do know how to do that part). Help!

    You can use an external drive with LR but I recommend only using it for
    image file storage while keeping your catalog on your internal HD for
    performance. If you moved files outside of LR (Finder or Explorer) you will
    have to clue LR in on where they are now. Use the left-hand folder panel in
    Library mode to navigate to the location on your external drive and use the
    find photo option get LR to reconnect them. If you moved the catalog and
    now LR can't find it you should get a window allowing you to select a new
    one where you can navigate to the new location and select it. You can also
    just start LR by clicking on the Lightroom 5 catalog.lrcat file to open it
    and start LR.

  • When I use Preview my computer locks up. Can't use it to view PDFs. Any ideas?

    When I use Preview my computer locks up. Can't use it to view PDFs. Any ideas?
    I try to save files as a PDF on external hard drives. When I select SAVE AS PDF I get spinning colorwheel and the program I am using locks (Quicken, Quickbooks, Gmail etc.)

    There were several /Library/preferences. The only one that had the file was the one under my user name. I deleted it. I was using Quickbooks when the problem started. It is locked. I have to reboot the computer to use it again. I tried SAFARI using the PRINT button then SAVE AS PDF. It didn't work. It locks Safari up. I will reboot and hopefully continue.
    P.S. I've done this procedure before and I was able to Save, but then the problem came back.

  • How do we use if statement in labview?moreover can i use if statement inside for loop?

    how do we use if statement in labview?moreover can i use if statement inside for loop?

    The if statement in LabVIEW is the Case structure. You can find that on the Structures palette right next to the For Loop. If you're still on the same subject about terminating a for loop early, then what you do is enclose your functions inside the loop with a case statment and make one of the case's empty except for one or more constants that you might have to wire. Hopefully, the attached picture will explain what I mean. Also, as I mentioned in one of your other posts, I think this technique is not as good as using a while loop. The array in the attached example is the same size no matter what and you may have to handle stripping extra or invalid elements.

    I have a verizon iphone 5c and I took out the SIM card just being curious and put it back in, now I can only use my phone on wifi and I can't use 4G or LTE strictly wifi. How can I fix this?

    Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the silver apple appears? If that doesn't work, try resetting the network settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings.
    If that fails, you may possibly have damaged the SIM. Verizon will need to give you a new one.
    Best of luck.

  • Can validations  be done inside  FOR ALL and can we use conventional insert

    Hi All,
    I have to move millions of data from one 'table1' to ' table 2'. Table 2 is equal Table 1 columns+ an extra column . data for the extra column is retrieved from table 3 using foreign keys of table 3 and table 1.how shud i do it using bulk collect and for all insert... I have given the sample code for my problem..
    TABLES:
    table 1 columns: emp_name, emp_id , emp_add, emp_txt
    table 2 columns: emp_name, emp_id, emp_add,emp_txt,emp_ref
    table 3 column: emp_txt,emp_ref,emp_size
    CODE:
    create or replace
    procedure bulk_proc IS
    v_emp_ref varchar2(20);
    cursor cur_t1 is
    select * from table 1;
    TYPE bulk_t1 is table of cur_t1%rowtype;
    v_bulk_t1 bulk_t1;
    cursor cur_t3 is
    select a.emp_txt,b.emp_ref from table 1 a, table 3 b where a.emp_txt = b.emp_txt;
    TYPE bulk_t3 is table of cur_t3%rowtype;
    v_bulk_t3 bulk_t3;
    begin
    open cur_t1;
    open cur_t3;
    loop
    fetch cur_t1 bulk collect into v_bulk_t1 ;
    exit when v_bulk_t1.count=0;
    fetch cur_t3 bulk collect into v_bulk_t3 ;
    exit when v_bulk_t3.count=0;
    for i in v_bulk_t1.first..v_bulk_t1.last loop
    for j in v_bulk_t3.first..v_bulk_t3.last loop
    if (v_bulk_t1(i).emp_txt = v_bulk_t3(j).emp_txt) then
    v_emp_ref := v_bulk_t1(i).emp_txt ;
    else
    v_emp_ref := null;
    end if;
    for all m in 1..v_bulk_t1.count
    insert into t2(emp_name, emp_id, emp_add,emp_txt,emp_ref) values
    (v_bulk_t1(m).emp_name,
    v_bulk_t1(m).emp_id,
    v_bulk_t1(m).emp_add,
    v_bulk_t1(m).emp_txt,
    v_emp_ref);
    end loop;
    end loop;
    end loop;
    close cur_t3;
    close cur_t1;
    end bulk_proc;
    can we do validations inside FOR ALL command..i am getting error.is it possible to use conventional insert inside 'for all command' or do we have to use only 'insert ti values v_bulk_t1(i)' like that....Do i have to use only conventional cursor for this problem?...please help me..

    1.I want to push 18 million records from one table to another table with validations....Can i use ur code for it? You can always test how the example Tubby provided works in your environment.
    Usually a single SQL statement is the right way to go.
    http://asktom.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=100:11:0::::P11_QUESTION_ID:760210800346068768
    (memorize the mantra)
    Another option you have is to use CTAS (Create Table ... As Select ...) or use the APPEND hint while inserting.
    Make sure first that you understand how it works:
    You can find many examples including clear explanations by doing a search on http://asktom.oracle.com
    2.Can we do normal insert and validations inside FOR ALL insert loop... Afaik, you cannot. ( But it wouldn't surprise me if Michael comes up with an example using dynamic SQL ;) )
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14261/forall_statement.htm#LNPLS01321
    Alternatively you should investigate if it's possible to adjust your query/queries in such a way so that only records that you want to insert are selected.
    In other words: use the WHERE-clause from your query to validate rightaway instead of selecting records thatyou don't want/need at all.
    3.How variables are stored in BULK COLLECT ..Is it storing pattern differs from cursor.......Sorry, I don't understand what you mean here.
    4.In which scenarios we should not use COLLECTIONS ...Please help me...That's totally dependent of the scenario/requirement.
    Example:

    Yes, the iPhone 5S is a global phone. However, Sprint will only unlock phones for use on GSM networks outside of the U.S. In the U.S., that phone can only be used on Sprint's network.

  • I m using EBS 12.0.6-10gr2..can i use discoverer..if yes then how

    i m using EBS 12.0.6-10gr2..can i use discoverer..if yes then how
    I dont know how to use it nor do i know the basic theme behind using it
    but people from industry told me that its good and i should use it for ad-hoc
    so please help me out

    Hi emm
    Then you need to get hold of Discoverer before you can get this working. Compared to EBS it is not expensive. Oracle will allow you to download the software from OTN for evaluation purposes but before you can use it in a Production environment you would need to have the license.
    You can download it here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/htdocs/devlic.html?url=/technology/software/products/ias/htdocs/101202.html
    On the page, after agreeing to the licensing terms which in your case you should read before clicking that you understand them, you should scroll down to the row headed Business Intelligence. This is the application server that runs Discoverer. At the very least you will need the Tools CD under the Windows column - this is the Discoverer Admin software, plus you will need the various CDs for the platform you are using.
    If you have never done this before you definitely need some help because there are a lot of steps involved in getting Discoverer up and running correctly and then interfacing it with EBS. This is not something you will be able to do by asking questions in a forum. You will need to find someone who has done it before or at least speak with your DBA who will have some experience of installing Oracle software and will have an understanding of Oracle Homes.
    With regards to having it on the same server as EBS I would strongly advise against this. Discoverer is a memory hog and heavy use of it when installed onto the same server as EBS will cause no end of problems. Put it on its own server, Windows is the cheapest and perhaps easiest to install, then be done with it. This question is a little like asking should I put my eggs in one basket. Yes, you could but the real question is whether you should do it and my counsel would be stringly in the negative. You will get much better performance from Discoverer if it is on its own server.
    Best wishes
    Michael
