Please help. When exporting a 720p video using Quicktime Conversion in FCP it saves some extra temporary files to my computer. The temporary file it saves is called ICMMultiPassStorage. This file gets so large that eventually the program and exporting process crashes. I have been able to locate the file using GrandPerspective and close out of FCP to delete it. But when I try exporting the movie again it creates the ICMMultiPassStorage file again. I have made sure my scratch disks are set to my external hard drive so I know that isn't the issue. How do I fix this problem so these temporary files are not being stored on my internal hard drive instead of my external? Thanks!

Try exporting the timeline "using current settings" via Make QuickTime Movie, then submit that clip to Compressor for the transcode. This should be faster and less painful.

  • I've been using a trial of FCP x 10.1.4, went to buy and it's 10.2 - I don't want 10.2 because I'm not running the updated OS. Can't I buy 10.1.4?

I've been using a trial of FCP x 10.1.4, went to buy it  and it's trying to sell me 10.2 - I don't want 10.2 because I'm not running the updated OS and don't want to. I have cameras that run off of OS 10.9.5. so need to keep that OS.  Is there a way I can just buy the version I used in the 30 day trial (10.1.4)?  It runs fine on my current OS.

I'm on latest version of OS X, FCPX, LPX and FCPXML export ingests into LPX just fine.

  • Using AE Filters in FCP 4.5 - How?

I pasted AEs Reduce Grain filter into Application Support>FCP System Support>Plug-Ins but when I start up FCP it says it can't find the plug-in for redice grain. Am I doing something wrong?
Help please, I have a shot with nasty noise and it looks good in AE with this filter but I would prefer to use this effect in FCP.
    Thanks out there!
    Paul

Most stock AE filters are incompatable with FCP.
Do the work in AE if that filter is 'the one'.

  • I'm using wrong settings on FCP, but don't know why

Hi, I'm a photoshop expert starting a new way into photography with slideshows.
I did some projects with Premiere with no problems, and now in studio we have acquired the Final Cut Studio, but I can't initialize a project in the right way, I guess.
I'm using a recent MBP, unfortunately none of the Mac Pro here are Intel Based (we just ordered a new one) and encountering LOTS of problems with FCP. It's slooow, and note that I've just added 40 photos to the timeline, no transitions, no effects, and it can't even preview the movie, it just freezes.
I'm making slideshow with still images, I rarely need to use some videoclips, few After Effects sequences.
Projects to be published on web or to be projected in HD resolution. Nothing else.
Images I'm using are resized properly with Photoshop.
I have two questions please. The first of all is about a manual or a well written web article to learn something on the huge amounts of HD codecs and formats I have when I start FCP. I guess it's not an easy issue, and it's time for me to study it.
The other one, in the meantime please help me choosing the right format and codec to have a good quality product but "light" enough to work on easily.
    Thanks.

Normally you would use an Easy Setup and Sequence setting that matches the codec that your video uses. Of course, that does not apply to Photoshop images because they don't use a video codec.
I always use .tif images in FCP for maximum quality, .png can also give excellent results.
Ideally, you should use a ProRes or DVC Pro HD Sequence setting with the pixel dimensions at 1920x1080.

  • Is it possible to add a Filmratings like PG or R using template made in FCP

I want to know if FCP has a prebuilt film ratings template we can use?

Obviously since you cannot pretend you have an official rating . . but may on the other hand want to give end viewers some warning as to content . . you could make your own ratings system.
In other words if its a horror give it a "hiding behind the couch" rating if it has adult themes give it a "blush factor" . . . . etc

  • Using still image in FCP and Motion

I'm using still images in Motion (and FCP) and exporting them to Quicktime movie files. What's the best size and resolution for the images and are JPGs or TIF best? I'm exporting for 720 X 480, and currently my JPGs are 4 x 6 at 300 dpi with a pixel width and height of 1312 x 2000. I'm adding some behaviors to the images in Motion (motion paths and shrink/grow).
My FCP project is setup as a DV NTSC 48kHz, 720 x 480, editing timebase=59.94, timecode Rate=same as editing timebase, compressor-DV/DVPRO-NTSC, quality 100%.
When I export to Quicktime the movies are very low quality--lots of noise and moire pattern etc.
How do I get the best qualtiy using still images? Is it my FPS setting, image pixel size, compressor setting? Also, do the movies need to be deinterlaced?
The preview in the FCP browser and canvas looks a little better but I do notice noise (moire patterns) along the sharp edges of the still images.
I've seen QT movies of these very same images (done by someone else who is no longer around) and they are much better quality.
Does anyone have an appropriate workflow for this type of project? The final movies are to be shown on a flatscreen monitor from a local computer, so the file sizes can be relatively large (300mb).
I can post an example of he movie files if that might help.
    Thanks.
    Pedro

David, your a genius!!! You posted your reply on my birthday, and I missed it until today!
Fotomagico is devastatingly easy to use and absolutely makes me want to cry at the amount of time I wasted creating photo slideshows in FCP!
I opened Fotomagico up and created a slideshow, one that I had already created in FCP and had take me FIVE HOURS to create... in TEN MINUTES!!!!!!!!! Aaaaaaaaah.
I couldn't believe it. I thought there had to be a catch or something. This was too easy the quality can't be there... but it was. It's amazing and I can't thank you enough for all the future hours you have saved for me.

  • Is there a way to use overlapping clips in FCP 6  for transitions?

I'm looking for a simple way to add a transition to two clips (no handles) in FCP 6.  In Premiere (at least older versions)  you could overlap one clip above another on the second video track and it would use the overlap for transitions.  Does FCP have anything (intuitive, practical, simple) like this?
    Thanks in advance.

That's it!  Simple, intuitive, just what I needed.  Now let's see how to mess with it once the transition is there.
    Thanks!

  • Using FCE files with FCP?

Hello - does anyone know if I can open FC Express files in FC Pro, and vice versa (with appropriate "save as")? I'm not an experienced user of these programs, but I think I will be soon. My collaborator on a video project uses Final Cut Pro, but I want to be able to make some edits, and can only afford (and probably only need) Express. Will we be able to exchange files in any way?
    iMac G5 2.1 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

In most cases FCE will not open an FCP project, unless the project is very simple. FCP will open an FCE project, if the version is new enough. It depends which versions of FCE and FCP you're working with. Once the FCE project is opened in FCP and updated it will most likely no longer open in FCE.

  • Using Blue Ray in FCP

I know not the first thing about Blue Ray and the more I use it, the less I know about FCP but. . . I am editing a project which requires me to choose between rip video from a DVD or using that same video from a Blue Ray disc.
Question: Is it possible to use Blue Ray video in FCP? If so, how do I get it into FCP and is it of a High Definition version or does it only convert to DV?
    Thanks
    R

If you're using commercial DVDs or Blu-ray discs (and it sounds like you're trying to do just that), you'll need to obtain the rights to the footage for your particular usage. When negotiating the terms of that agreement with the copyright administrator, stipulate that they provide the needed footage in an editing format - NOT in the final delivery format. It may add some cost to the project but be well worth it in the long run.

  • Using dual monitor with FCP

    Hi to all!
I´ve a NVidia FX5200 dual head (of course!) working wih FCP.
I bought a SVideo / Video Comp. to connect it to this board ... could it be possible to view my "canvas monitor" in a external monitor (normal TV, for exemple)? This way i would not have to connect my minidv to do the "normal" baypass ... is it possible?
Can i use this board to do it (?) or some other dual head model?
    Thank you!
    HBars

What you are proposing may be possible, but I'm not sure it makes sense.
You can use two monitors, of course, to get extra screen real estate and you don't need a fancy graphics card, most of them support two regular size monitors.
On ther other hand, you definitely want an NTSC monitor to view the real look of the video. Mirroring your computer monitor is unlikely to be a reliable guide. Connecting the miniDV via firewire and your TV/NTSC monitor to that isn't "bypass" - it's the direct way to get to a real video image to judge color, contrast, etc.

  • Workflow Qs: Using LT, Motion and FCP!

Hi, getting all jumbled up on workflow. I am inserting motion projects direct on the timeline, but I want livetype titling in this project as well - the titles are part of the motion animation. I don't see where i can save a livetype style I have set up there to just use in Motion, nor a sendto click. What do I have to do to make the composite? Thanks!
    Bonus Question:
I also need to creat this effect:

    Creating a Chalkboard Effect
How to create a Chalkboard effect with text that writes on the board and is then removed with an eraser! Click the image to watch this tutorial.
BUT, we can't afford 99$ nor do we have credit cards in Nepal to order. Can anyone tell me if this is possible to recreate by hand just using Motion and LiveType? Thanks,

Import the LiveType project file as you would import it into FCP. However, my advice is to render the LT movie and bring the movie into the Motion project. You will save tons of processing and be able to edit your Motion project much faster. Try not to get hung up on precision with the LT stuff. In fact, I'd use proxies for the LT files with the simplest settings and minimum effects until you are much further along.
Most of LiveType's effects can be easily emulated within Motion.

The economics of effects are usually grossly misunderstood by cheapskates. The effort you will expend in faking this effect will cost you far more than simply buying it. Credit cards are not the issue, you can make this purchase in many ways, use your imagination.
Find a bold typeface that you like. Apply any noise filter to a matte as a still image to create an alpha mask that will give some chalkboard texture to the text by removing some of the pixels. The same noise matte can be offset slightly and blended using ADD to give you some bright chalk highlights. You create the eraser effect using the paint function in Motion or buy using a grayscale and a procedural or gradient wipe. There is an eraser object in the Content of Motion. Animating the onscreen movement of the eraser and the eraser matte is challenging but a fun exercise in learning Motion's advanced functions. A chalkboard is a dangerously primitive anachronism. Be sure the metaphor is appropriate to your communication goal and not just some silly effect your creative manager insists on using.

  • "SDHC card cannot be ejected because FCP X is using it. Quit FCP X and try again".

Whenever I import AVCHD clips from my SDHC card (connected via a card reader) and then try to eject it I get this message.
Up to now I have simply quitted FCP X to eject it but there must be a quicker and more elegant solution?
    How?

Incidentally I have read a suggestion to use the "eject" symbol/button in the camera import window but after using it the card remains stubbornly on the desktop and a further attempt to eject it normally or drag it to the trash  brings up the dreaded warning message again.
I've even tried Disk Utility with the same lack of success.
OK, it only takes 20 seconds to relaunch FCP X but it should not be necessary.

  • What should I use to export from FCP to DVDSP?

I'm sorry if this question is too basic, but I've searched past discussions and read the manual, and can't seem to find the answer. I am trying to put a nearly hour-long movie I made onto a DVD, in order to have hundreds of duplicates made. I'm using DVD SP, and I had been exporting my movie from FCP to a Quicktime movie file, then importing the Quicktime file into DVD SP. Then recently I came across something online that said you should actually be exporting from FCP to Compressor, then to DVD SP. I've never used Compressor before, so I have no idea what to do, or if I even should be doing it. The video was fine when I exported to Quicktime, but I of course want to have the best video quality possible.. so if there's a way to keep the video at the highest quality possible (higher than when using Quicktime), please let me know (and if it could be explained as simple as possible, I would appreciate that).

    Hi Ryan,
I'm relatively new to this too but you're on the right track. I would export to Compressor.
There are various settings i.e. mpeg2 fast encode, high quality 60min, 120min, widescreen, 4:3 etc and all dependant upon what you want your end result to be.
You'll need to choose your format - I suggest mpeg2 - 60min High Quality Encode > your destination for both the video and audio > 'submit'.
You should end up with a file that resembles *My Movie.m2v*
Then import that file into DVDSP into the assets pane and you're away.
    Good luck!

  • Using STP Music in FCP

Probably a silly question by most people's standards, but I'm looking to use some of the music in Soundtrack Pro in a movie we're creating in Final Cut Pro.  The music is at 44.1 MHz and we need it to be 48.0MHz like the rest of our FCP audio.  How do we get this done?
    Thanks!

    Hi Christina,
We have been working all day on this issue.  It seems our stills (jpgs)  that we imported have caused the audio to slip. The sections in which the audio is delayed is where we have stills on top of music. The audio comes back in with the video, but then is delayed.  Any ideas on why? I'm also going to put this question back onto the discussion board as a new topic.
    Thanks,
    Jamie
