Using a laptop as a qwerty keyboard with an imac

Hi,
I have an imac, and i am in the middle of a project which is on a deadline.
I don't have time to get to an apple shop, or to wait for a delivery, but for various reasons i am short of a qwerty keyboard for the imac. I have a powerbook G4 here, and wondered if the keyboard from that could somehow be used to run the imac.
Is it possible?
David Tobin

If I were you I'd either:
1. Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences... > International > Input Menu tab then add check Keyboard Viewer.
Also check that Show Input Menu in Menu Bar is checked.
Then in any application, on the Union Flag on the right of menu bar choose Show Keyboard Viewer. You can then 'type' using the mouse.
2. Any USB keyboard will work though! so if you can scrounge a PC one in short order.
3. I'd also advise trying a different USB port with the current keyboard to see if that helps.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can use the keyboard you want with your iMac. However, note that some keys, as the Command key, aren't present in non-Apple keyboards. For example, in a non-Apple keyboard, you have to press the Windows key because that's the replacement of the Command key of an Apple keyboard

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee

  • Is it Possible to Use a Laptop as input/output device with X11 Server?

I have a dedicated server for which I have no monitor/mouse/keyboard, but I can connect my laptop to it with an Ethernet cable. Would it be possible to somehow use the laptop as if it was the screen/input of the server by connecting them over LAN?

Yeah, I should definitely look into X forwarding.
tomk wrote:You didn't say if the server is running X or not (servers don't need X, btw). If it's not, plain and simple ssh is the way to go.
heh, alright. Since SSH is what I used to control servers very far away, I figured there would be a more elegant way to do this when the machine is just 4 meters away with LAN connectivity. I also find it convenient to have a GUI when doing anything major on the server.
As I do not want X11 running all the time, I'm guessing that I would first need to have plain-SSH that I could use for minor stuff.
If I then want to do anything major, I'd use the SSH to start the X11 server and then connect a second time but with X11-SSH.

  • Can I use my apple wireless mouse and keyboard with my Mac Mini and Windows PC?

Hello, I recently dug up a windows PC computer for side projects, and I was able to get by using my wireless apple keyboard and mouse for my Mac mini, and then using a usb mouse for my PC, I want to eliminate the usb keyboard and mouse and just use the bluetooth keyboard. Both computers are usually on all the time, and the windows PC uses a bluetooth adapter. I can get my keyboard and mouse to work on both, but I have to sync them to whatever system I would like everytime I want to use it. Is there any solution that when I choose the Mac Mini my keyboard and mouse will work for the Mac mini, and when I choose my windows pc, the keyboard will only be used on windows without having to resync?

    To my knowledge, no.

  • Questions on A1048 keyboard with 2011 iMac

I am not a fan of the Bluetooth keyboard and started using an older Apple keyboard (model A1048).
Everything seems to work ok except some of the function keys appear to do nothing while other functions such as screen brightness, dashboard etc. work but with different function keys from the BT keyboard. The only thing that appears to be "missing" is the forward, play/pause, and back functions (F7/F8/F9 on the BT KB).
    Also no "fn" key.
Any way to map these features to the unused function keys? Any other issues about using the older USB keyboard?

I found a free workaround app called 'SizzlingKeys'.

  • Wired windows keyboard with 2009 iMac

According to two different Apple tech support people, I must erase my harddrive to get my iMac functioning properly again.  To do so, I had to get a wired keyboard to replace my bluetooth keyboard, since the latter doesn't work for my purpose.  How do I erase my harddrive using this windows keyboard?  What's the windows analog to Apple's "command r" ?  Needless to say, I'm pretty much a dummy here but follow instructions well.

Just an idea for you. There is an entire Apple Discussion forum dedicated to Boot Camp and Windows.
Whereas, not everyone here with an Intel iMac has installed, tried to install or has experience with BC & Windows, everyone there has or at least has an interest. You may attract help more quickly there.
    The Forums are at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology. Here is a link;

  • Use 23" apple monitor as second monitor with 27" imac

I've just bought a 27" imac, and I want to connect the 23" apple monitor from my old system to it as a second monitor.
The 23" has a huge cable with firewire and usb connectors as well as a multipin connector. How can I link it up?

    Hello,
I have seen people use the expensive DVI-ADC converter with an MDP-> DVI cable.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-Mac-A1006-DVI-to-ADC-Converter-LCD-Display-Adapter -w-Power-Cord-/330799049978?
Cheaper ADC to DVI converter won't work.
Then you need an MDP to DVI adapter...

DVI single link 60-Hz LCD can display a resolution of 1920 x 1200.

  • Using a Panasonic HC-V500M video camera with an iMac?

Does Imovie 08 (7.1.4) support a Panasonic HC-V500M video camera? Have been able to transfer movie to Imac with Imovie '08 but audio doesn't transfer. Why? What should I do to get audio?

From what I've found through reading the topic in several digital movie
forums, you should be able to use iMovie and have it import the file
from the camera for use and editing in the Mac.
This path may be version dependent for best results; and I am not
sure which versions of iLife's iMovie would be best for use with the
digital camera and also may be compatible with the older Mac iBook.
Some Panasonic digital video cameras are also seen by iPhoto and
in some cases, that can find the movie file and import it for iMovie.
And there are other Panasonic video devices which create the same
kinds of files, and there is a free or shareware software out there to
help use them. This may include players by third parties and others
which may be able to edit digital movie files.
In some digital movie forums, there is an awareness of Panasonic
    products not necessarily being the best supported for Mac OS X;
while many pro users of Panasonic products have Macs, among
them are newer Intel Mac users with Parallels, BootCamp, etc
and they can run XP or Vista-ready software. If this is (still) true,
then Panasonic may be missing out; since modern products
should have support in their retail box for both major platforms.
Some Panasonic products have shipped with Mac software for
several years now; along with Windows software. Some didn't.
Hopefully iMovie can see the Panasonic digital movie files; if the
iBook can support the feature set of iMovie. Some aspects of
this part of iLife require the ability to record to DVD media and
also may require more system assets & resources than you have.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • TS3988 I am using mountain lion.  iCloud works fine with my iMac iPads and iPhone with one annoying exception.  I cannot use the systems preferences on my iMac because I cannot log in.  When entering my apple id and password I get a window saying "You can

I cannot log into systems preferences for icloud on my imac.  icloud works on all devices including the imac, but I get the window "You can't sign in at this time" when using system preferences on the imac.  I am using mountain lion, but it didn't work on lion either.  Help

You may wish to try the following:
    1. Sign out of your account
(If you are unable to do this because System Preferences has frozen, Force Quit System Preferences and try again)
    2. When prompted, opt to delete, contacts, calendars etc from your Mac.
(You are only deleting this data from your Mac, not from iCloud, the data will be reinstated when you log back in. If you need to check that the data is in iCloud before deleting it go to iCloud.com and check each section for data)
    3. Having logged out, check that the iCloud accounts along with their data have disappeared from the Mail, Address Book and iCal Applications.
(If necessary, delete the iCloud accounts from each of these application separately from each Applications Preferences)
    4. At this point it may be worth trying to log into iCloud from the System Preferences iCloud settings again, if this works, all well and good, if it doesn't continue to step 5.
    5. Open your User Library folder in the Finder. (When in the Finder, go to the Go menu, hold down the option key (alt) and choose Library when it appears in the Go menu)
    6. Navigate to Library > Application Support > iCloud and drag the iCloud folder to your desktop. (This action only copies the folder and will provide you with a back up)
    7. Select the iCloud folder again in Library > Application Support and drag it to the trash, enter your administrators password when prompted.
    8. Restart your computer.
    9. You should now be able to enter your ID and Password in system Preferences > iCloud and log into your account. Check the services you wish to use and once you are satisfied it's working as it should, trashh the iCloud folder you copied to your desktop earlier.

  • Anyone using a canon pixma pro 9000 MKII with their imac?

I'm curious as to your opinion/satisfaction with this combo.

    Adam,
Sorry for the delay. Been trying to get a copy of 6.x to check but it seems to have been borrowed and not returned. So I'm not sure about the ppd being in the correct place. With v7.x, the PPD Manager looks in /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj as a default and also has the auxillary option so that you can browse to a different folder.
However, talking to some of my colleagues it seems that the ppd contains no colour management information as the printer is not a postscript device. It is purely for paper support and the print dialog extensions. So the addition of the ppd into Quark doesn't improve the print quality, it simply makes some installations of Quark happier with the ppd field filled.
Note that with v7.1, even after copying the ppd into the correct folder, after selecting the Pro9000 as the printer, you cannot change the PPD menu - it is disabled.

  • How do I use a My Book external hard drive with my iMac OSX 10.6.8?

I just installed a My Book external hard drive, installed the software and have an image on my desktop that shows the My Book and an Odometer of some sort.  How do I store data on this drive?  I have about 3000 photos and movies I need to get off of my computer's hard drive so I can upgrade to Mavericks.
    Thanks

From what it seems like, You may want to try and do a Time Machine backup. Time machine is meant for backing up data like photos and movies automatically. You can set up Time Machine by going to the apple in the top left, system prefrences, and Time Machine. On the right click select disk, select your external drive, and turn Time Machine on. Now your computer will back up every hour while that is connected
