Using a Linux box to talk to an Oracle 8i database

I have an Oracle 8i database running on a Sun Solaris box. I
setup a Linux RH 7.1 box running iPlanet 6 and ColdFusion 5 that
I want to use to develop apps on that talk to the Oracle DB.
What software do I need to install on the Linux box to make this
work? In the old days, Oracle 5, I used a tool called SQL*Net to
do this. What is it called now? Someone told me I need to load
the Oracle 8i client tools on my Linux box. Is this correct and
any idea how I would configure it to talk to the DB on the
Solaris box?
Many Thanks!

the 8i client works using SQL*net as well. Just do the system
preps on the how-to's and install the client software. I have not
used Red Hat beyond 6.2, but that worked well as did Mandrake 7.2

  • Oracle 10g OCI based application talking to an Oracle 9i database

    Hi all,
    Got a question. I have an OCI C++ application that is written using the Oracle 10g OCI includes, etc ... This of course is running on a 10g client. The client OS is actually a Windows x64 system since 10g is the only native OCI client right now for 64 bit Windows systems. So this all works fine. Now, I am communicating with an Oracle 9i database server. Is there anything wrong or invalid about this configuration ? I didn't think that there was but I was asked to confirm this, that is having an Oracle 10g client communicating with an Oracle 9i database. Our application is making very straight forward OCI calls, and we are not using any of the newer OCI calls that were introduced in 10g, just the ones that are available in 9i OCI.
    Thanks in advance,
    Nick

    Thanks for the reply.
    Actually I thought that the OCCI forum was for Object oriented OCI, so while I'm using C++, I'm not using the object oriented side of OCI, just using the normal OCI calls. Guess I should have been a little clearer in my original post.
    But my main question really concerned the version of the client and the version of the database which you answered.
    Thanks,
    Nick

    Please help me how to solve this issue.

    I suggest trying to install a different version to confirm the error. Do you have SELinux enabled? It can cause weird errors. You can check the syslog /var/adm/messages to see if there were any SELinux errors.
    The following is known to work:

    I recently installed Solaris 11 11/11 on a cloud-based virtual machine - so that I can start learning about it - and wanted to know what do I need to configure in order to connect via SSH from my SunOS console to some Linux boxes that use SSH2-RSA key authentication.

  • How to set and static ip_address for a Suse Linux box

    Hi.
    I've done the following to set an static ip address for my Suse 9 Linux box:
    - Take not of inet address value from ifconfig command. ie: (172.17.2.14)
    - Change this value in /etc/hosts for my linux box.
    Since Suse is configure by default to use DHCP for assigning dinamic ip_addresses i'm not sure whether will lastly be set as a static address. I've rebooted my box and it seems to be OK.
    Thanks in advance ...!

    /etc/hosts is not configuration file for ethernet interfaces.
    Configuration files for ethernet interfaces are stored in /etc/sysconfig/network directory.
    For example if you have eth0 device then configuretion for this device is stored in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0 file.
    Important directives:
    DEVICE - interface (eth0)
    IPADDR - IP address of interface
    NETMASK - netmask
    BOOTPROTO - "static" for static configuration, dhcp for dynamic configuration via dhcp
    ONBOOT - activating interface during boot (yes/no) (yes - of course :-) )
    GATEWAY - default gateway
    So for example you want setup static IP (192.168.10.1 / 255.255.225.0) for eth0 interface.
    Edit the /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0 file and your configuration should be:
    DEVICE=eth0
    IPADDR=192.168.10.1
    NETMASK=255.255.255.0
    BOOTPROTO=static
    ONBOOT=yesThen you simply restart the nework using:
    /etc/init.d/network restartOR
    /sbin/ifdown eth0
    /sbinf/ifup eth0 OR
    ifconfig eth0 down
    ifconfig eth0 up

  • How can I resolve slow browsing in finder when connected to a share point on a linux box?

    Hi,
    I am having huge difficulties when browsing a share point that is on a Linux box. I am connecting to it with a Macbook Pro running Lion 10.7.5.
    Initially there was an SMB share point setup on the server which was extremely slow to browse. I then setup an AFP sharepoint thinking that would help with the issue but it hasn't made a difference at all. The issue is that files take forever to load when browsing using Finder. Moving between folders on the sharepoint takes extremely long since files are slow to load.
    There are very few options available on line to help with this and so far none of them have worked. I think the problem is with Finder and the way it indexes the files but I could be wrong.
    Please help!
    Nabeel

    Hey Brenda, this isn't 'Safari' I believe this is your Modem/Router to solve this issue please look on the bottom/side of your internet box, and find the codes. But I also believe, when starting up your modem/ Internet box when you first actually received it you had to sign up, this is the only way in order for you to receive this message. Please contact your Internet providers.
    Try Uninstalling Safari!
    Have you tried to press cancel to see if that helps?
    See if this happens on any other browser

  • Unable to connect to SQL Server 2008 from OBIEE 11G(on 64 bit Linux box)

    We are unable to connect to connect to SQL Server 2008 from OBIEE 11G which is on 64 bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
    Infrastructure: OBIEE 11.1.1.5 64bit, on 64 bit Red Hat Linux Enterprise Linux 5.6 , MS SQL Server 2008 on 64 bit Microsoft Windows Server
    Issue Description: Unable to connect to SQL Server 2008 from OBIEE11G RPD
    Details: We are unable to connect to SQL Server 2008 from OBIEE which is on a 64 bit Linux box. We created the ODBC connection on Linux box to the SQL server. Whenever we try to import metadata it throws an error that says ‘Connection Failed’.
    Here are the steps we followed to setup the ODBC connection on Linux box.
    1) We updated the user.sh file with the LD_LIBRARY_PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH_64 values that point to $ORACLE_HOME/bifoundation/odbc/lib
    This is where we found the driver for SQL server SEmsss23.so.
    2) We updated the odbc.ini file with the entry for SQL server with the connection details
    SI_SQL_Server_DEV = SQL Server
    [SI_SQL_Server_DEV]
    Driver=/u001_OAS/Oracle/Middleware/Oracle_BI1/bifoundation/odbc/lib/SEmsss23.so
    Description=DataDirect 5.1 SQL Server Wire Protocol
    Address=10.230.216.52,54970
    AlternateServers=
    AnsiNPW=Yes
    ConnectionRetryCount=0
    ConnectionRetryDelay=3
    Database=SVBDW_NEW
    LoadBalancing=0
    LogonID=SIDatavalidation
    Password=~~~Password123
    QuoteID=No
    ReportCodePageConversionErrors=0
    3) We updated the IDENTIFIER_QUOTE_CHAR with single quotes instead of double quotes in the DB features of the RPD
    4) We updated the bash_profile file to point the ODBCINI variable to the path where the OBIEE odbc.ini file is present.
    Export ODBCINI=/u001_OAS/Oracle/Middleware/instances/instance1/bifoundation/OracleBIApplication/coreapplication/setup/odbc.ini
    The error in nqsserver.log file says “[nQSError: 16001] ODBC error state: IM002 code: 0 message: [DataDirect][ODBC lib] Data source name not found and no default driver specified.”

    Hi,
    Make sure SQL Configuration Manager make sure the TCP/IP enabled. please try below method
    Method 1
    Re Create a new ODBC & Oracle Bi Server DSN Configuration test it and use it in the connection pools.
    define your ODBC data source in your server where the BI Server is installed. Check your DB connections in your physical layer and make they are defined on your BI Server as well.
    Method 2:
    try using the complete TNS in below format in the datasource name section:
    (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST =DB IP)(PORT = 1521)) ) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME = ORCL) ) and provide the credentials.
    Method 3:
    To use the OCI call interface you need to have oracle client DB to be installed so that you can establish a connection using that DB credentials and connect to the remote dB and then import the tables.....this is the rule of thumb.
    hope helps you.
    Thanks
    Deva

  • OBIEE 11g Scheduler installation error on Linux box. Please help!

    Hello,
    I'm trying to install OBIEE on a Linux box. The repository was created using a Windows PC on a separate Oracle database on another server.

    I've checked the configuration and there is nothing wrong with it, plus I have checked connectivity from the weblogic server and the Linux server to this. Also I do not have Enterprise edition everything I do is at console level in Linux.
    Please help. I've been trying to sort through this for a long time.
    Thanks.

    Becky,
    You need not do any thing additional to have EM running in the OBI 11g instance. Although it is a deployed JEE application, if your Weblogic Server (WLS) is started and up and running then your EM Console should also be up and running.
    You say that you are doing everything from the command line. So, start the Weblogic Server then navigate to http://< your server name> : 7001/console
    If that comes up then go to
    http://<your server name>:7001/em
    That is your EM Fusion Console and it should come up as well.
    Don't mess with the XML file directly.

    Thanks Girish. But all my findings says NO NO and NO.
    From http://www.oracle.com/technology/support/metalink/index.html
    Certify - Product Version and Other Selections: Oracle Database - Enterprise Edition On Linux x86-64 (AMD64/EM64T)
    General Notes For Oracle Database - Enterprise Edition On Linux x86-64 (AMD64/EM64T):
    Processor Chip Information:
    Linux x86-64, support on AMD64/EM64T and Intel Processor Chips that adhere to the x86-64 architecture with supported Linux releases.
    "Running Oracle 32-bit on AMD64/EM64T (64-bit OS) is not supported . "
    Oracle 32-bit running on AMD64/EM64T with a 32-bit OS is supported, refer to platform Linux x86 for more information on product availability.
    Note: As Ivan confirmed EM64T is mark for Intel 64 (x86-64) processors.
    Even the metalink Note: 182999.1 says...
    "A 32-bit application will work on both a 32-bit and 64-bit O/S, whereas a 64-bit application will only work on a 64-bit O/S."
    but the same articel says
    "Note: These statements do not necessarily apply to Oracle on Windows O/S's, Itanium or AMD64/EM64T based Platforms. See Certify for specific information."
    and then I got update from Support. Even they Say....
    "No it is not suggested that you run Oracle at 32 bits for a Linux X86_64 platform. This would not be a good idea"
    I guess I need to sit with my senior DBAs and SA tomorrow to find the path forward...
    Thanks all.

  • Building an Application in Windows to be used in Linux (with the Run-Time Engine)

    Hi All,
    I have an LabVIEW project I have developed in a Windows environment.  I can create an Application (.exe) using the Build Specification -> Application Builder which works fine on the development platform.
    I now want to distribute the application to a Linux Environment.  The OS is openSUSE v10.3 (with GNOME).  I have downloaded the two rpm files needed for the run-time engine and installed them, as per here:http://digital.ni.com/softlib.nsf/websearch/97E14BA3E0C14A89862572C300567733?opendocument&node=13207...
    Now, the question is; how do I create an Application in Windows which can be used on the Linux Box?  According to the Application Builder instructions, it's simply a case of removing the .exe extension in the Target File Name options, however, this gives an error "Invalid Extension."
    If I do create an exe and manually remove the extention is doesn't work on the Linux enviroment (typing ./application).
    Has anyone had experiance of this?
    Many Thanks for Any Help,
    Oliver
    Windows XP SP 2
    Labview 8.2.1
    openSUSE v10.3 (with GNOME)
    LabVIEW Run-time Engine Version 8.2.1 for Linux

    The cross-platform nature of LabVIEW refers more to the code than to the executable.
    LV (given the appropriate development version) can compile the same source code into a Windows (using LV for Windows), Linux (using LV for Linux) or Mac (using LV for Mac) program.
    This means you will still have three versions of your program, one for each platform.
    If you want to distribute VIs (without block diagrams), you will also need different versions of these as without the block diagram, they cannot be re-compiled for a new platform.

    Which seems to be the problem here? Why can't i connect to the 11g instance using sqlplus?. I don't think it is related to enviroment since access can be done using local naming service.
    Please help ...!
    PD: i did not replace scripts on /usr/local/bin when installing 11g.

    Hi all. I have the following scenario.
    See embedded comments below
    - Two Oracle versions and instances on the same box (10g Rel2 and 11g Rel2).
    - Due to lack of disk space i installed 11g on another ORACLE_BASE / ORACLE_HOME:
    - Initial enviroment (10g):
    [oracle@VM1 ~]$ echo $ORACLE_BASE
    /home/oracle/app
    [oracle@VM1 ~]$ echo $ORACLE_HOME
    /home/oracle/app/OraDb10g
    [oracle@VM1 ~]$ echo $ORACLE_SID
    BETA
    [oracle@VM1 ~]$ echo $PATH
    /home/oracle/app/OraDb10g/bin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin
    - 11g related values:
    [oracle@VM1 oracle]$ echo $ORACLE_BASE
    /u01/oracle
    [oracle@VM1 oracle]$ echo $ORACLE_HOME
    /u01/oracle/Oradb11g
    [oracle@VM1 oracle]$ echo $ORACLE_SID
    ALFA
    [oracle@VM1 oracle]$ echo $PATH
    /u01/oracle/Oradb11g/bin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin
    [oracle@VM1 oracle]$
    Both databases are running including :
    - listener 1521 for 10g and 1525 for 11g-
    An unnecessary complication that achieves nothing. A single listener, using the default name LISTENER and the default port 1521 is quite capable of -- WAS DESIGNED TO -- service multiple database instances of multiple versions running from multiple homes. In a multi-version environment, you'll want to use the listener from the highest version.

    Because when you connect with TNS, you are no longer dependent on the current setting of $ORACLE_SID.

    Please help ...!repeat your above demo, but with this modification
    id
    cat /etc/oratab
    env |grep ORA | sort
    echo $PATH
    sqlplus / as sysdbaIn a multi-db environment, you need to always set your environment before trying to work with any database. The easiest way is to use the oracle utility 'oraenv'
    oracle:orcl$ . oraenv
    ORACLE_SID = [orcl] ? dwsbx
    The Oracle base for ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1 is /u01/app/oracle
    oracle:dwsbx$ echo $ORACLE_SID
    dwsbx
    oracle:dwsbx$Notice the command is 'dot space oraenv'

  • REP-50159 - when report sent directory on the linux Box

    We have created a directory called hbc_parvo and the path is /u01/hbc_parvo. Added path in reports.sh and restarted reports server.
    I am trying to run the report and save on the Linux Box in the directory I created.
    I get this error when I run the report
    REP-50159: Executed successfully but there were some errors when distribute the output. Need help if anyone has had the same error and how to fix it
    Edited by: user11244023 on Jul 13, 2010 1:20 PM

    Hello,
    There are 2 steps in a Reports execution with the Reports Server :
    Step 1 : The reports is exeucted by a reports engine and the Reports output is generated in the Reports Server cache.
    Step 2 : The reports server will take the output generated in the cache by the engine and will send it to the destination specified in the parameter (DESTYPE DESNAME)
    In your case, a problem occured during the Step 2
    What is the DESTYPE / DESNAME used ?
    Regards
