Using a Loudness Meter in File Editor

Here's the scenario:
In a multitrack project with Panning Mode set to Left/Right Cut Logarithmic, I have 1 stereo track and 1 mono track. I have a stereo and mono version of the same file loaded up on their respective tracks. Both files have been measured and yield the same exact average (RMS Measured/Perceived) Loudness.
I insert a Loudness Meter on the master in the multitrack project. I solo/single pass each track in their entirety. When both tracks have completed, they return the same Program Loudness values on the Loudness Meter.
Now I open up each file in the File Editor and run Amplitude Statistics for each file. The results for Total RMS for each file is exactly the same, as expected. However - on the bottom of the Amplitude Statistics window where ITU values are displayed - Audition tells me there is an approximate 3 LU variation between the stereo and mono file. In fact, the stereo file is +3 LU hotter than the mono copy. This is confirmed by passing each file through the Loudness Meter in the File editor.
Can someone elaborate? Like I said amplitude stats confirm the files are equal (Total RMS/Percieved loudness). Why are the ITU results off by 3 LU as confirmed by the loudness meter readings? If this is accurate then is there a problem monitoring mono files for Loudness in the File Editor?

It may be as simple as how the algebraic sum is done and presented, and having now re-read section 7.3 of EBU Tech3343, I'm pretty sure that this is the basis of what's happening, even though that's going on about surround mixes. What it amounts to is that you've summed two channels that have the same levels, essentially, and this gives you a 3dB increase for the combined signal (ie, 3LU). Normally I'd just suggest changing the pan law settings, but according to the EBU, you aren't supposed to do it like that...
Reading between the lines, they're suggesting that you should adjust the stereo spread (rather than the signal levels) so that the percieved loudness still comes out the same - I think. It really isn't that clear, though, and despite all the work that's gone into this, it still doesn't work properly; mainly because it's not that easy to understand, and it isn't being implemented very well as a consequence. Big-name broadcasters are still having issues with this!

21.5" iMac whistles whenever a file is moved and after a while in use makes loud continuous crackling noise

I have just received a refurbished iMac 21.5" running Mountail Lion but build mid 2011. It emits a high pitched whistling noise similar to a smoke alarm but not quite as loud whenever a file is moved, eg. to the trash and then while sorting old files recovered from the hard drive of my now deceased macbook, it began to make a crackling noise as well. Does anyone else have experience with this behaviour? It continues while the work continues and then when I stop moving files it continues for maybe another ten seconds then stops.

I'm afraid I don't have a solution, but I'd recommend you call AppleCare as you have 90 phone support (3 years if you bought the extended AppleCare). Hopefully they'll have a clue as to what's causing it or organise getting it fixed.
Before making the call there are a couple of things you could try. I doubt they'll work but you never know. They won't do any harm and will take a couple of minutes. An SMC and a PRAM reset. If you still have the problem best make that call. Good luck.

How do I get imovie to use Photoshop Elements 12 as external editor?

How do I get imovie to use Photoshop Elements 12 as external editor? I am making a movie slide show with music from my Caribbean vacation photos and adding text captions to photos in PS Elements 12. I can also add some effects to photos like edge blur although I like iphotos effects better but iphoto doesn't seem to do text. The finished PS Elements photo doesn't seem to want to be shared by iphoto which is what imovie uses...
I am still learning to use PS Elements 12 for Mac (had PSE 7 for WinVista but wasn't proficient) and Mac and it's programs are new to me. I switch between my old Dell which is still amped for graphics and the new Mac mini. I started to use Movie Maker to do my vacation project but read that imovie was better but so far it doesn't seem to have as broad of file useage when it comes to imovie and photo files.
Hmmmmm??? What to do?

You simply need to create your stills with Photoshop Elements, save them in a suitable format (.jpg, .png, .tiff are all acceptable) then drag and drop them into your iMovie timeline. You don't have to use iPhoto.

I have been using photoshop elements 12 as external editor to resize some photos and add some refinements not available in aperture....
It look like the file I send to PE becomes HUGE but is not marked as a separate version.....there is a little mark in lower right corner..
Is this correct?normal?
It is a problem, because I am also trying to use focus stacking software and it won't stack files with huge size differences...

oh wow!
I started with a .orf (olympus omd em1) RAW file 13.73 MB...
I just right clicked to edit in photoshop elements...
so the one beside it...is 40.51.....it does not say new version but it has the "dot" on lower right.....
so I don't understand all the intricacies of this...but I am guessing sending a file out of Aperture gets a huge file in return.....

Im not completely sure, why you are pointing out the very same thing I'm pointing out too. If you re-read my original post thoroughly, you will find - at its very end - the sentence "When the image is inserted from a file, it works". Since I'm not aware of the way how to insert the image from a file in a procedure other, then clicking the "camera" icon, I hold such a sentence for more then enough to point out, that the camera icon works fine for me (if you re-read my post thoroughly and pay detailed attention of my expression "using clipboard", then you shall definitely evaluate this expression as covering both ways an image can reach the cliboard, eg. Copying from a graphical editor/processor or dragging&dropping a graphical file).
However more then this, your post does in fact NOT reply to the fact, why the WYSIWYG editor box allows the insertion of an image from clipboard, but then fails to upload it and thus it is not displayed in the post.
For the sake of completness, I must also point out, that your last sentence of your post "And that's what it is there for" does not bring much clarity about that thing - while I fully understand, as one can observe from my "When the image...it works" sentence, the functionality, purpose and propper handling of the "camera" icon, I cannot agree with such a behaviour of the editor, that allows an operation to be done (What You See) that does not affect the outcoming result (Is What You Get).
From the theory of designing (G)UIs one may learn, that in such a case the operation should either fulfill completly (eg. display the clipboard-inserted image in the resulting post) or fail completly in the beginning (when Pasting the image into the text), either silently (just not displaying the image in the editor field) or with an error warning such as "Insertion of images/bitmaps from clipboard is not permitted". For Windows-like environments (such as, but not limited to, Microsoft Explorer, KDE, Gnome, IceWm....) the change of the dragging cursor to display a kind of "No way" or "no entry" pictogram, is also advisable.
For the sake of completness of my reaction I also might percieve your last sentence as a kind of irony or sarcasm, which however I definitely do not find appropriate behaviour, more over I might call it an "arogant rudeness" in case of such a "VIP" member with more then 9000 posts in the time when this post is being written, with a hint of overworking, malicous intends, inattention, ego-centricism or any other personal failure(s) or a combination of them, that you should - in case they are present - definitely pay attention to in your private life.

Using Visual Studio as an HTML editor with SharePoint's Design Manager

I'm building a master page using Design Manager. I've mapped a network drive so that I can access the MasterPage.html file with an HTML editor.
I'd like to use Visual Studio 2012 as my HTML editor. But, when I modify MasterPage.html in VS, it creates a MasterPage.html~RF9158aed.TMP file alongside the MasterPage.html and MasterPage.master files, which breaks the master page in SharePoint.
I can modify MasterPage.html successfully with NotePad. I can also modify an html file, that is not associated with a folder in SharePoint via a networked drive, with VS.
Can I use Visual Studio as an HTML editor in this scenario? If so, what am I doing wrong?
Your help would be much appreciated.

The TMP file is used by VS to save off changes in the file your working on, so you can perform Undos for instance. If you shut down VS it should clean those up for you. However, this can be a challenge if you're still working on the file.
I would just make a copy of the MasterPage and place it in a folder outside the mapped folder. Then you can simply copy and paste it back into the mapped folder.
FYI, don't do this with any OOTB MasterPages! Please make a copy and rename one that comes with SP, you don't want to change those in case you need to revert back.

JKL Keys Don't Work Correctly in File Editor

I'm using STP v3. When I select a clip in the timeline of a multitrack project, using the JKL keys in the File Editor does not work correctly. Instead of playing from the current time of the playhead/CTI, it plays from the beginning of the selected clip. Is this normal or is it a bug? The JKL keys function properly in the timeline, but not the File Editor.

Search this forum (if the Search facility is working) for Wacom. People have reported problems with Wacom's current drivers and pressure sensitivity. I believe the current workaround is to downgrade to a slightly older version. I have also seen it reported that Wacom is aware of and working on the problem.

Im looking for a good source file editor and am wondering what you would recommend?
Will only be using it for developing simple test programs (for study purposes) - at the moment.
I dont mind splashing out a few Euros either.

Many ThanksI would stick with notepad (or whatever is the simplest text editor your OS offers) for editing and the command prompt for compiling, running, jarring, etc. Somebody who sticks with the basics for the first year of programming will turn out to be a better programmer than somebody who used a fancier IDE with syntax highlighting, auto-completion, compiling and running without the command prompt, and whatever other bells and whistles come with it.
I used notepad and the command prompt for my first year, then used JCreator pretty much all throughout college.

Edit Pop in Waveform Editor and File Editor

After downloading the current update for Logic Pro I have found several bugs in Soundtrack Pro. The most disturbing is an audio pop at the edit point in Soundtrack Pro when you delete audio in either the Waveform Editor or the File Editor. And, yes, I am using zero crossings. This has not happened before and has now rendered Soundtrack Pro unusable as an editor for my projects. Has anyone else had the same problem? Is there a work-around or some other solution? This is happening on muptiple and varied systems and has not happend before.

Still having the same problem and a few more. I have come to the conclusion the problem is bigger than first thought. Finally resorted to do a clean install of the OS etc. and all the updates and start frrom square one.
Note to Apple: The insturctions on how to re-install Soundtrack and Compressor by themselves will not work and are not accurate or detailed enough. If time is important to you it is best to backup your files and start from scratch.

But actually I don't want to show the \ (backslashes) to the user in my text box.
Ok let me elaborate this problem little more.
I want to show my text box as it is in normal editors e.g. In Matlab editor. There is a text box and on left side the gray bar shows the line numbers corresponding to the text. Further more i want that the user should be able to click on any line number to mark specific line as breakpoint (red circle or any graphical indication for mark).

Error 550 when using CFFTP to remove a file

I'm using cfftp to download files which I parse, then I need to delete the file from the server. (coldfusion 11 - development)
I can list, and download the files fine, but am butting my head into a problem that I can't seem to resolve.
USING THE SAME PATH AND FILE NAME that allowed me to 'get' the file - When I try to remove the file - I get this error.
Error: 550 file: No such file or directory .
(again - the path and file name I provide are identical to the path/filename -
if this is a permission problem, I can delete files thru Filezilla, using the same credentials - with no problem)
Here is the call to remove -

I'm not sure where you got the "This is not what the docs say" part. Looking down the list of CFFTP attributes in the CF11 docs that apply to a "remove" operation, those were the attributes I would have expected to need. Although I agree the examples could be clearer and a specific example of removing a file would be useful.

Using HAL to generate XML files

Greetings, I'd like to use HAL to build XML files and feeding certain variables while these files are generated. When the XML file is done being created, it will contain the variables passed. There are over 500 XML required to be build and for each of these files, only 2 or 3 variables must be passed to them. A template of the xml file was created using the Batch scheduler from Hyperion Reports, and this is the file I'd like to use as a template and build a HAL adapter based on that file. Does any one have a sample of the XML adapter (via screen shot) that I can use a starting guide? Many thanks in advance for your time.

I'm running into the same problem deploying the classes generated by the class generator. Code works fine from JDeveloper, but had to put my DTD in the directory where my classes are. Deploying the classes with Apache's JServ gives me a NullPointer exception on the first addNode method. I guess it can't find the DTD. I tried to put the DTD in many locations but this didn't fix the problem. Any suggestions?

I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7 iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually.The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.
Please tell me how to get this disc to eject !

No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.

There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.

I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

Numbers is a spreadsheet program and FileMaker is a database program, so you probably can't use Numbers to open them unless you had first exported them from FileMaker in a spreadsheet-compatible format.
If you upgraded from 10.6 Snow Leopard or earlier and your old copy of FileMaker won't open anymore, it might be a PowerPC application that is not compatible with 10.7 and later. If that is the case, to work with your FileMaker files you should upgrade your copy of FileMaker to the latest version, which seems to be FileMaker 12.

Can I use my Nikon D90 AVI files in Premiere Pro CC on my iMac?

Hi and thanks in advance to anyone who can lend me a hand. I am new to both Premiere Pro CC and Macs. I have used my Nikon D90 AVI files before with Premiere Elements on my PC with no problem, but the same films aren't working on my new setup with Premiere Pro CC and an iMac.
I can see and preview the films in the Source window but when I try to drag them onto the sequence window I get a little hand with a "no" sign.
I am using a version 7.1.0 (141) of PP CC and am on OS X 10.9
Do I need to transcode the files? If so, to what? And what is the best way to do that?

I realize that people don't always have the right words to describe the problem, and therefore have trouble searching. If searching fails you, just ask. It generally works out in the long run. And as you have discovered, sometimes a combination of posts may do the trick.
