Using a Lucent Wavelan Silver in the PCMCIA slot

I removed the Lucent Wavelan Silver card from an old Airport Base Station Graphite hoping to make my Powerbook Titanium wireless. After I plugged it in the PCMCIA menu bar icon displayed but the card didn't appear to be functioning. The Network preference in System Preferences doesn't show any signs of reading the card either. Has anyone had any success fixing this problem with third party cards?
What I've found so far is a non-Apple solution drivers. Is there an Apple developed solution out there for third party cards? It is hard to get an original Airport card today.
Powerbook Titanium   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Charles,
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
What I've found so far is a non-Apple solution drivers.
I assume you've found the IO Xperts driver. (http://www.ioxperts.com/products/80211b_X.html)
Is there an Apple developed solution out
there for third party cards?
Not exactly. Apple uses the Broadcom chipset. Some third-party manufacturers also use the Broadcom chipset and those cards would then work with the AirPort drivers. Here is a link to a list of wireless cards that note the chipset, OS and driver.
http://home.earthlink.net/~metaphyzx/Wireless.htm
(Note: the list is dated August 2005.)
Manufacturers change their chipset so the version number of the card will make a difference. For example, the list shows that the Linksys WPC54G uses the Broadcom chipset. Well, that is true with version 1. Version 2 uses a Texas Instrument chipset and version 4 uses the Inprocomm chipset, which means these two do not work with the AirPort Driver.
I use the Linksys WPC54GS v1.0 (SpeedBooster) that uses Broadcom. It was plug 'n play.
It is hard to get an original Airport card today.
A quick search found a number of sellers, but they cost 2-to-3 times more than a third party card. (I didn't check eBay.) A third-party card also avails you to the faster option of 802.11g.
Hope this helps.

  • Is there a PCMCIA "extension cable" (for WaveLAN Silver)?

    Hello
During the last year I have been using a (Orinico) Lucent WaveLAN Silver PCMCIA wifi card (recognized as Apple Airport) in my PPC G4 "Digital Audio" desktop. I bought it off ebay for less than $20.00 shipped, as an alternative to buying an Airport .11b card for 4x the money. However, because of my thriftiness I have been unable to close the case of my desktop for a year - the WaveLAN card is longer than the original Airport card.
I have decided that I wish to close the door to desktop again and to do so requires a flexible "extension" PCMCIA ribbon or cable, so that I may flip the card 180-degrees back into the case. My searches have resulted in dead ends. Any suggestions?
    Thank you.
P.S. Please note that I do not want a USB wifi dongle/card (e.g., d-link or similar).

    Hi-
    Like this ?

  • What wifi cards fit fully inside a (dual) PCMCIA slot?

Teh background and information (bonus funny story)
So I was poking my 9 year old laptop recently and amazingly found that via a USB wifi dongle I'd completely forgotten about for a few months, I could get wifi on said laptop, even over USB 1.1.
Then I tried to figure out how to shove the dongle inside my laptop and things kinda went south from there at about 2.7 billion miles a second.
Everything just went *flooooop* when I accidentally put the little PCB back inside the dongle the wrong way after taking it out to try and fit it inside a space inside the laptop; this wasn't problem, except I couldn't see the little blue LED. So I hastily took the board out to flip it over and I think I touched the it while doing so for the first and only fatal time...
I also tried to craft a cardboard plug to fit in the USB port on the laptop, and may have pushed the little contacts into the plastic recesses in the port a bit too much; this is unlikely to be the problem because I very carefully re-bent the contacts out again, and my flash disk works every time I plug it in, sooo... probably not that.
Anyway, now I know how to put my laptop back together again *doesn't say anything about the small collection of screws he has no idea what to do with*
Right now, my USB dongle kinda works but really sporadically; it mostly doesn't work at all. It fails anywhere between the kernel thinking the "USB cable is bad" (</quote>) to fully detecting and configuring the dongle (under either an rtl8187 or ndiswrapper-powered driver), but not letting me connect to any SSIDs. I typically have to unplug the thing and shove it back in in the previous case, or give up in the latter, which I've no idea how to get around, until it feels like connecting again (perhaps after cooling down?).
So I want to try a PCMCIA type card because...
    - I can't use my flash disk without a hub right now, since the dongle would occupy the only port available (although linux does say there's a 2 port hub inside >.>).
    - The port has a cute little flap over it that I don't want to remove, and it causes my USB dongle to not be able to go in properly unless I use a cable
    - I'm all like jittery about the USB port possibly not working =P
I've found it impossible to find any sort of specification sheet for this box so I have no idea what kind of PCMCIA port it has, but I'd imagine type #1 if that's of any help. The laptop itself is a Toshiba Satellite 2540CDS also.
    Teh point
I want to get away from the whole "vulnerable peripheral sticking out of side of laptop" thing and get a PCMCIA card that fits fully inside a laptop's PCMCIA slot, preferably without needing to use an external antenna.
I don't mind if the card takes up the space of the upper slot as well; I'm not using that one (and doubt I will soon).
I've been told that cards like this exist, but (of course) I only want one that is known to work with Linux, or at least one that should theoretically work (ie because it uses a supported chipset), and one that includes an internal antenna.
Although an antenna sticking out the side sounds like it'd look cool, so I might be okay with that once I see what it'd look like
    So what do you recommend?

    Hi Steve
Well, I cant give you proper answer how you can exactly remove the PCMCIA slot.
There are many screws and in my knowledge you have to remove all covers and screw which are placed at the bottom of the unit and inside under the keyboard.
Please check this unit precise. Maybe you have overlooked some screws.
But if it impossible to remove this PCMCIA slot from the unit I recommend to ask the service partner for a detailed instruction.
    Good luck
    Bye

  • Wireless Routers With PCMCIA Slot

Does Linksys make any wireless routers beside the WRT543G-ST that have a slot for a PCMCIA Card?

I think dibbler is right because I do not recall ever seeing one with the PCMCIA slot.  Although it would be cool if they did that to support some of the wireless broad band cards that are available now.  That would be a awesome security measure to keep your teenage kids from getting on-line after hours or when you are not home to monitor them.  Simply take the card out and take it with you.

  • Satego X200-21D - Specifications of PCMCIA slot

    Hi all,
can someone told me the specific for the PCMCIA Slot? In special I wanna know how much Volt the slot has.
3.3 V or 5 V or can the slot both of them?
    Kind regards,,
    Adrian

    Hi twister666,
The Satego X200-21D doesnt have PCMICA slot, it has Express Card slot. This slot allows you to insert an Express Card. An Express Card module is a small, modular add-in card technology based on PCI Express and USB. The max. transmission rate at 2.5 Gbps. Both 34mm type and 54 type are supported.
But about voltage I can find no information but I think thats not important because there is a standard voltage for this specification that every card will work.

  • Os 10.2.8 drivers for lucent waveLAN/ieee wireless card

I can't believe I'm the first to ask this but my search came up empty.
I have a Wallstreet P3, 233Mhz, with OS 10.2.8 installed; repartitioning the drive erased 9.2.2, for which I have no install disks. I just got a Lucent waveLAN card from eBay that the system sees, now I need drivers. Can someone provide me with a link to the drivers for this card.
Perhaps they're already installed and I'm not doing something right to connect to the internet (I think I remember with 9.2 I had to tell the system to use either wireless or ethernet). Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
    Bryan

Well, even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then...
After a few hours and several dead-end drivers I tried ejecting the waveLAN card and installing it in the lower slot on the powerbook...and it worked. Sigh.
BTW, the driver from sourceforge seems to work great on Jaguar.

  • Is the PCMCIA-232/4 compatable with Pocket PC/PDA?

I am interested in integrating a pocket pc or pda (no moving parts) with the pcmcia-232/4 for some pseudo-realtime applications (anything rs-232 is pseudo realtime IMHO). The Pocket PC will collect/manage data from the rs-232 and issue commands to the rs-232 ports. I would prefer to use winCE as my OS (not my choice but I did not make the requirement)and a simple high level language to control the ops (again, high level languages are nearly always pseudo-realtime IMHO).
What would NI recommend as far as obtaining compatability of the pocket pc/pda, pcmcia-232/4, and win CE?
Also, does NI have any "high level" language support for managing data and issuing commands?
    Thanks,
    KTM

LabVIEW PDA (http://sine.ni.com/apps/we/nioc.vp?cid=12219〈=US) is the recommended high level language support for managing data and issuing commands. It was developed for both Palm OS and Pocket PCs. Currently there is not a pcmcia-232/4 driver written for either the pocket pc or palm os. If you could find a PCMCIA serial card with driver (dll) written for the pocket pc, it could be interfaced through a call library function node.

  • How to use one NIC for everything and the other to allow ssh from

    Hello,
I have two internet connexion at home:
    - a cable connection (CABLEBOX) that i use for all of my devices as it's the fastest. All my computers are connected to it using ethernet or wifi.
    - an adsl connection (ADSLBOX) that is connect to the second network card of one of my computers (MEDIABOX) only and that i want to use only to ssh that same device from the outside
I want that specific computer to use its:
    - NIC1 to connect to the LAN and to the internet. Routing is enabled on CABLEBOX.
    - NIC2 to connect to that device from the outside using ssh. ssh-D should also work through NIC2 as i need to be able to use that computer as a proxy on some occasions. Routing is enabled on ADSLBOX and it's set to port forward the port 22 to MEDIABOX.
Once this will be working i'd like to also route ftp connections to specific ips by NIC2.
No firewall is set on MEDIABOX yet, i'll do it later on.
I know basics on how to set routing rules, how to assign a specific LAN to a network card but i have a hard time on deciding which rules i should set...
    Can someone guide me?
    Thanks in advance

A possible solution might be this.
On ADSLBOX and CABLEBOX configure different subnets for the LAN, e.g.
    ADSLBOX:    192.168.1.0/24
    CABLEBOX: 192.168.2.0/24
The MEDIABOX gets these static IPs:
    ADSL-LAN: 192.168.1.2
    CABLE-LAN: 192.168.2.2
On the MEDIABOX, configure the two network interfaces using two routing tables.
    The ADSL-LAN routing table
ip route add 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 src 192.168.1.2 table 1
ip route add default via 192.168.1.1 table 1
    The CABLE-LAN routing table
ip route add 192.168.2.0/24 dev eth1 src 192.168.2.2 table 2
ip route add default via 192.168.2.1 table 2
    The main routing table
ip route add 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 src 192.168.1.2
ip route add 192.168.2.0/24 dev eth1 src 192.168.2.2
    # use the CABLE-LAN gateway as default, so general internet traffic from MEDIABOX runs over CABLEBOX
ip route add default via 192.168.2.1
    define the lookup rules
ip rule add from 192.168.1.2 table 1
ip rule add from 192.168.2.2 table 2
    To test the setup:
    ip route show
    ip route show table 1
    ip route show table 2
I don't know how to persist something like this in ArchLinux using netctl. Might require to write a special systemd unit for it. Above is a working example from a RedHat box at my company.

  • I have an SD card that my husband uses for a trail camera. The camera does not have a delete function for the pics, so I put the SD card in our MAC and we can view the pics but when I go to delete them it says that the files cant be deleted. What can i do

My husband has an SD card he  uses for his trail camera. We put it in our mac book pro and can look at the pictures but when I go to move them to the trash it tells me that the files can't be moved to the trash because they cant be deleted. I have Nikon camera software on my mac and it pics up and asks if you want to import the pics and if you want them deleted from the devices afterwards. I tried that but I get a message afterwards that says that some files were not able to be deleted. When I go to check, none of them were deleted. How can I clean of the SD Card? I do have a camera I could stick it in, it would just be nice to know how to do it from my mac. Also, the files are jpg. if that matters.

AFAIK cameras offer their own built-in format utility for inserted SD cards.  You should use that.  Otherwise, refer to the manual that came with your camera to determine precisely how your SD cards need to be formatted to work properly.  Personally, I'd suggest Partition Scheme: MBR, and Filesystem: FAT32.
Try to limit the number of formats you perform on the SD cards, though, as you're reducing their lifespan.  I believe formatting causes re-writes to a portion of the SD card that has fewer read/write cycles than the rest of the card as a whole.

DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?
