Using a Mac Keyboard on a PC?

Does anyone know if its possible to use a mac keyboard on a PC? If so, are there drivers that Windows will require in order for it to function properly, or will Windows treat it like any other keyboard?
Before you even ask why I would do this...I really like the new Apple keyboard and would like to buy one for work to use as my main keyboard there as well.
thanks

Hey, I run an Apple keyboard on a Windows machine all the time.. I assumed you are talking about a newer keyboard as I don't have much experience beyond 3 years ago keyboards.. It works fine.. Of course some of the Apple specific keys such as Command don't have a special meaning in the Windows environment but the keyboard has Alt and Control which are commonly used..
No drivers necessary.. Just works...

Question: I am using a mac , wired Keyboard, on  a windows 8.1 platform ( this is because I have boot camped my hard drive) Unfortunately when I change over from my mac set up into the windows 8.1 the key board does not behave like it does when I am using as a mac. I have stated every issue I’ve had so far in a fairly clear and concise way. I think if you read what I wrote, it all makes logical sense as to what is going on. Windows 7/8 would work just as well on a Mac if it was supported the same way the OS is for other OEMs.
As I stated earlier in the post, I’m having these same issues in windows 8, not just 8.1, which is the reason for the post. I know the difference between supported by drivers and not supported by the manufacturer. The fact that when Haswell mbp’s came out and no revision to bootcamp for the new hardware was released to fix issues with installing windows on the new hardware shows Apple clearly Is not supporting bootcamp as strongly as they advertise.
I am being realistic on Apple having drivers early. Anyone with an MSDN subscription can download the RELEASE version of windows months ahead of the actual release, I’m 100% sure if any average consumer can do that by paying $100 and saying they are a developer, apple can do it just as easily.
You aren’t much help, you haven’t answered really anything to my post, nor have you contributed any knowledge that wasn’t clearly posted above, so don’t say anything if you don’t have anything to contribute.
By the way, my rant is directed at apple, as you can see because I am saying “Apple, if you are going to…” because this is an Apple forum on Apple’s website. It is not directed to end users, clearly.

  • How to use the MAC Keyboard

Can anyone point me to a tutorial or posting which explains how to use the keyboard?
I have an iMac (sep2009) with a wired keyboard including numeric keypad and there are keys that I just do not know how to use
    eg:
How do I put FUNC LOCK on so that when I using Excel the F2 key becomes EDIT CELL rather than adjusting the brightness
What do the keys below the F14 and F15 keys do? There is an angled arrow up and left and ne down and right. and there is an arrow up with two lines crossing it a,d another similar one down. What are we supposed to sue these for?
Under the F16 key there is a box with a cross through it. What does that do?
WHy are F5 and F6 blank?
What does the big key on the very right bottom do?
I would have thought that there would be a MAC101 guide to the keyboard but I cannot find it... Any help from out here?
    Many thanks

System Preferences>Keyboard; Set it to use Function keys as F1, F2, etc.

I just loaded the UK Apple store and compared the keyboards to the ones at the US store. I guess since you are so "international" over there, you get pictures instead of words. My guess would be Home, End, Page Up and Page Down
Under the F16 key there is a box with a cross through it. What does that do?
Clear key for the numeric keypad.
WHy are F5 and F6 blank?
No additional functions assigned to them.
What does the big key on the very right bottom do?
Enter key for the numeric keypad.

I think Apple thinks based on where you live, you understand pictures instead of words. Probably cheaper to make one keyboard than ones for each language.
    Many thanks
Edit: Almost forgot. MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control. A Mac (short for Macintosh) is a personal computer made by Apple.

  • How do I use a Mac keyboard for Windows functions?

I just changed from an HP to a MacBook Pro and I'm running Windows XP on part of the hard drive. The problem is that I'm missing my key buttons, like <fn><prt sc> to print the screen or <insert> and <delete>. I can't figure out how to compensate for the lack of the buttons on the keyboard.
Any solutions? Does anyone know where there is a good reference for this sort of thing?

I don't know of a chart, there should be one out there.
    There is a utility, "InputRemapper"
    check http://www.versiontracker.com or Google
what it does is let you map keys on MacBook etc. I use it because it also boosts the fan speed, otherwise my system can get too warm so it needs something, and there is no mechanism in Windows and with Apple's BootCamp services it seems, to use the thermal sensor data to adjust the fans. There are 3rd party like InputRemapper that might - but would like to see it "bundled."
Did you check the search field above next to Support for "BootCamp"
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

  • Using MAC Keyboard with Vista

I am using a dual OS, Mac & Vista. The Mac USB keyboard works occasionally with Vista. It may work for a few minutes then stop completely. I loaded the Bootcamp drivers with Vista as instructed. Is there and updated driver that will allow me to use the Mac Keyboard with Vista? Vista has no answers.

Just to update anyone interested, I installed Vista and MCE separately without using BootCamp. Just like a regular PC. I did not know it was possible I found it by accidentally. After which I installed the drivers and am currently using the Mini as an HTPC. I don't have osx installed on it. everything works perfectly. no problems at all. I think BootCamp creates more problems.

No, nothing will prevent the computer from going to sleep when you close its display except third-party hacks that are designed to do exactly that. I strongly advise against using any of those, as they may interfere with successful entry into clamshell mode (and they carry other downside risks as well). Just wait until the computer is asleep (with its sleep light pulsing), then press any key on the keyboard. It sounds as though your setup is working as it's designed to do.

    rajlego,
in the Keyboard pane of System Preferences, select the Shortcuts tab, and then select Mission Control on the left-hand side. On the right-hand side, make sure that the Mission Control checkbox is checked, double-click on its current key combination (by default “^↑”) so that the key combination is highlighted, and then press the F3 button — that will set its shortcut to be F3. You can now press F3 to bring up Mission Control without needing to also press the Fn button.

You can find the Apple Bluetooth card on eBay for as little ten dollars (says its for the 2008 model Mac Pro, not sure about the 2007).

Here is a link to a full explanation of the card and how to install it. Part numbers may differ a bit as that is an old article and newer models have come out.

Just make sure that the part will work in your model Mac Pro. To that end, you may be better off avoiding eBay and going to a parts reseller. There are even third party cards that use the internal Apple bluetooth slot.

In theory, using a USB or PCI card will work at login so long as it is recognized by Apples drivers. You say you need to launch an application to use your current USB Bluetooth dongle? If it is not controlled by the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar then it must be using a third party driver of some sort. Unfortunately, I don't know off hand which USB and PCI cards are supported.

  • Problems with using non usa keyboard (Mac OS X 10.6.7)

    Hi,
I have MacBook Pro, (Mac OS X version 10.6.7), slovenian keyboard and when i type in Code View or Design View one of slovenian characters (š, č, ć , đ, ž) it is not written correctly. They are all written correctly if i for example write them in Find Window (Edit --> Find and Replace) etc. This is extremly annoying and i don't know what to do. I don't have similar problem with any of other mac programs only with macromedia ones. Any suggestions what can i do?
Thank you in advance for any answers.

Is the language (regional time zones and languages) correctly set?  If not then you need to make sure it is Slovenian to matcvh your keyboard.
It is my experience that you can't mix and match the keyboards.  For example, you can't use US standard Keyboard on a UK set system because the currency and date formats are all different in these two countries and so the pound sign £ and # will interefere with your work.  This is just one example but I am sure there are many.  The puctuation marks are all mixed up etc etc.

  • Using mac keyboard on Windows, how to get all CS shortcuts working like on OSX?

    Hi!
Firstly, thanks all for any tips/help, it's very much appreciated!
My girlfriend is using a mac at work to design with CS 5. At home she has a windows 7 laptop though.
It seems one of the biggest issues is that the shortcuts aren't working the same, which reduces her productivity so much that it does not make any sense to work from home.
So we still have one of the fancy apple USB keyboards at home and I was wondering if it's possible to get CS working with an apple keyboard under windows so that she can use the same shortcuts which she uses at work with CS5 under OSX?
Thanks for your help in advance!
    Thomas

Using a Mac keyboard for the PC won't help. It will probably map the command key to the Windows key. Bob's answer is right on the money. She has to retrain her muscle memory, when at home use control, when at work use command.

Try a SMC reset, please do it 2-3 times.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
