Using a Microphone on MacPro

Hi there,
I am trying to record narration into iMovie on a G5 Macpro, but I am not getting any line level. I've tried the midi audio and sound pref, but no luck. Do I really need a pre-amp to record onto a G5?

A G5 MacPro..? Weren't they called PowerMacs?
If it's a "floorstander" there's no built-in microphone - like there is on the laptops - so the best thing is to plug a USB "soundcard" into one of the USB slots, and then plug a microphone into that. Or use a USB microphone.
Then, in System Preferences, under 'Sound' and the 'Input' tab, choose that USB device as the input device.
You could use any USB-based sound accessory: e.g; one of those teeny USB 'dongles' which comes with a Philips headset, a standalone Hercules 'Muse' device, a little 'Hama' USB Audio Converter ..anything like that.
But don't plug a mic into the 'Line In' socket of your Mac; the audio level will be too quiet.
So you don't necessarily need a pre-amp; you just need a USB audio input device.

Hello guys I thank you in advance for reading this. What I want to know is if it is possible to record a sound clip using a microphone and then upload it to the server using a swf applet in a webpage. Im an experienced java/javascript programmer but just starting out with flash/action script. What technologies will I need to do this? Can I do this simply using simply an swf file and an apache/php or jsp page? Again, thanks alot for your help.

You can Microphone class in Flash to record the sound and it will directly upload to FMS server .
Use the Microphone class to capture audio from a microphone attached to a computer . Use the Microphone class to monitor the audio locally. Use the NetConnection and NetStream classes to transmit the audio to Flash Media Server. Flash Media Server can send the audio to other servers and broadcast it to other clients running Swf files .

Problem in using the microphone in a Motorola HT820

Hello,
I'm trying to use the microphone in a Motorola HT820 bluetooth headset/headphones. It works well when I use just headphones, so I don't have any problem when I listen. However, when I use Skype or audio recording applications, the microphone doesn't work at all. When I set up audio, if I choose HT820 microphone as an input device, an error message comes up which says "Bluetooth audio failed. There was an error connecting to your headset. Make sure it is turned on and in range. The audio portion of the program you were using may have to be restarted."
HT820 works well (both headphones and microphone) with my iPhone but the microphone doesn't work at all on my iMac.
Anyone who knows how to solve this problem? Any comment will be greatly appreciated.

This has been going on for awhile. It's an Apple system bluetooth software issue, which will hopefully be solved in the next OS X update.

On the late 2006 iMac, there are two jacks, One microphone and one speaker/earphones..
How can I use my Klipsch S4i's microphone with my iMac? As I can't use both the jacks at the same time, which is what I need :/
Is there something I could buy? (I really want to use my earphones microphone)

I doubt that the Apple headset is compatible with your laptop. Apple devices have an extra "ring" in the plug and jack for connecting the control buttons. Your laptop does not recognize the extra contact.

I have tried dictating into Pages and copying and pasting, but the Windows based (Allscripts EHR) recognizes only the first attempt to copy and paste. Any future copying results on the first pasted dictation to show up in the Allscripts EHR.

Using a microphone to measure speed

My problem is that i am trying to measure the speed of a fan using a microphone with labview, any ideas??????

And I thought this would be a tough one....
Input the microphone to your sound card, Run the fan and capture the sound. Send the sound through an FFT. If the microphone is placed near the outside of the blades, facing the output of the fan, you will get a "beat frequency" of the fan blades. This will give you a very low frequency. Divide by the number of blades and 60 and you will get the RPM of the fan.
What you are trying to do is to isolate the frequency that occurs when a fan blade passes in front of the microphone, compressing the air, pushing the cel of the mic in, then the blade passes, decompressing the air (in relative space of course), pulling the cel out. This is a very strong component of the sound you will measure with the mi
crophone, and should be very easy to see in the FFT. If you want to get fancy, you can isolate this peak in the FFT, apply the math to convert it to RPM, and output the fan speed.

Try converting to .mp3. You will almost always get some loss when converting one compressed format to another. It shouldn't be that noticeable though.

no, it has nothing to do with Siri or wifi. I've used my microphone everywhere and it's worked perfectly. Now the arrow just spins around and around when I use the microphone. I tested the microphone by making a video and the sound of my voice is perfect on the video so it's not that the microphone doesn't work. Help!

FaceTime won't use USB microphone

I recently purchased a Samson Go Mic from Amazon. Yesterday, I received the product and connected it to my laptop, a MacBook Pro 2012 13". After changing the audio input to the microphone, I was able to use Quicktime X to record a video using the microphone. Later, when I called my dad through FaceTime, the computer no longer recognized my Go mic, and only recognized my EarPods. When I unplugged the EarPods, the audio switched to the built-in microphone of my computer, and not the Go Mic. How can I use the superior Go Mic with FaceTime?

Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
