Using a Mini as a DVR?

I want to buy a new mini and ideally be able to use it to record tv shows, and archive some of those shows to DVD. I know that there is some 3rd party software to do this. I do not want to have to open it and hack it for any modifications though.
1. How easy is it to set this up?
2. What additional software/hardware do I need to do this?
3. How well does the solution work? Does it work as nicely as a TIVO solution? Is the mini solution problematic in anyway?
3. Going this route, is there any sort of monthly fee involved for having access to the tv listings, etc.?
4. How is the quality of the video card? How will recorded TV display on a 42-inch widescreen LCD?
Thanks!!!!

You don't give enough information to give an exact answer but here are some general suggestions.
For the Mac, the current best DVR application is Elgato's EyeTV. This software supports a wide range of TV tuners for the Mac which covers, analogue, ATSC, US Cable TV, DVB-T, DVB-C, and DVB-S. In fact the only TV standard it currently does not support is DVB-S2.
For the US market, it does provide access to a free EPG (TV listings), for DVB-T it can access the 'over the air' listings. Otherwise you might have to subscribe to TVTV (it includes a years subscription). Annoyingly, they still don't support using XMLTV for listings.
The hardware you need will depend on the TV system you want to use which you did not state so I cannot answer.
An Intel Mac mini even with its built-in Intel video chip is perfectly capable of driving a TV display.
Elgato's website is at http://www.elgato.com
The Elgato software will let you easily send a recording to Roxio's Toast to burn to a DVD.
Now, as I said the above is the current best Mac OS X solution, there is also the Tube from MediaCentral but it supports far fewer types of TV tuner, there is also SageTV which in my opinion is a complete joke as it supports exactly two models of tuner (both analogue I believe).
I personally, even though I also have Elgato's EyeTV software, currently run (gasp!) Microsoft Media Center 2005 on my Mac mini. This is one of the few (possibly only) categories in which Microsoft have genuinely provided the best product on their own merits, without copying, stealing, or otherwise cheating, (which does not mean it is perfect). Media Center supports all the TV system listed for Elgato EyeTV, but unlike EyeTV it does not support subtitles for DVB-T, DVB-C, or DVB-S. As long as the TV programme is not marked as protected you can using various tools to edit, convert, and burn to DVD recordings. Media Center includes a free EPG service.
I have not bothered to upgrade to Vista Media Center since it adds, zero, diddly squat, zilch, not a sausage in terms of additional Media Center features for Europe (over MCE 2005). However if you are starting from new you may as well get the Vista version included in Vista Home Premium or Ultimate.
Of course we all wish Apple would come out with a version of FrontRow that also acted as a DVR.

  • Use Mini as a DVR?

Can I use a dual core Mini as an HD DVR if I hook it up with an Elgato HDHomeRun? If I do that, do I also need an Apple TV? Or can the Mini be used alone with Front Row? I want to hook it up to a 52" 1080p LCD TV, but the TV does not have a DVI port, just HDMI and Component.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

I use the mini as a DVR, using the Elgato HD HomeRun and eyetv hybrid with version 3 of the software. They work seamlessly together. I view them on an 23" Cinema Display and an NEC 19" LCD display. You should be able to use an DVI to HDMI cable to take the video signal to the TV, using the optical or analog audio signal to provide audio to the TV or the home theater amp. I use Front row with the included remote as well.

  • Using Mac Mini in my home theater set up...please help...

I am looking to purchase a mac mini to incorporate it into my home theater. I recently purchased Apple TV, but after doing research...i'm begining to think a mac mini just has several more options (a few $100 more...understood).
    A few questions...
1 - What specs do i need on my mac mini? Which model..and how much memory?
2 - Would love to eliminate dvd collection & rip all movies onto an external HD. Anyone know the best program to use to keep the DVD quality (file size is irrelevant to me -- 1TB of drive space)
3 - is EyeTV the way to go to use the mac as a DVR?
4 - Would i have HD content and surround sound?
    Thanks.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I've been using a Mini (first a PPC and now and Intel) for this same purpose for over a year now. As a result, the AppleTV didn't really impress me. The AppleTV seems like a good idea if you have a large household with a lot of computers and you want to "stream" all these computers' content to one location. But the Mini can do all that plus it can act as a DVD player, a DVR, and a stand-alone computer in your living room when you can't get off the couch. I highly recommend it.
As for specs, if you can afford the highest end Mini that they're selling right now, I'd go down that road. When I upgraded from the PPC to the Intel Mini, the better performance was noticeable. Particularly since all my media files are stored on an external drive.
I just started ripping some of my DVDs. HandBreak works wonders (and it's free!)
With FrontRow and an optical audio cable hooked up to my receiver, I'm able to get 5.1 stereo surround sound. The mini is hooked up to a Samsung LCD HD TV. Looks/sounds amazing.
I've been considering getting EyeTV as well and ditching TiVo. (But my wife is terribly attached to TiVo, so we'll see who wins that one!) Let us know how it works.
Oh, one more plus is that I installed Windows on the Mini via BootCamp. So I have a PC in my house if I need it.
    Hope that helps.

  • Using Mac-Mini for movie / TV entertainment center

    Hi all,
Can someone steer me into right direction? I'd like to use my MacMini as my main entertainment center to view my movies, music,TV, etc. and would like to know what will I need to make viewing pleasurable? I'd like to get a 42" display. I'd also like to add 5.1 digital surround sound. I'll also be using my Mac mini for web surfing and emails. Thanks for your help
    Web dude

I just finished my setup, and I'm quite satisfied. I bought a Mac Mini to use as the media center and bought the Elgato EyeTV 250+ to get digital television over the antenna, which also allows you to use your mac as a DVR. I send the video to a Sony projector via DVI to HDMI cable, and the audio goes to my old surround sound receiver via the headphone jack to RCA. If you don't have a receiver yet, I'd get one that has optical audio input since the headphone jack on the mini also has optical out. I also use a firewire external hard drive to store video.
I continue to use my DVD player to play DVD's instead of the mini, simply because if there are any scratches (especially on rentals) the mini doesn't work through them as well as my DVD player. I plan on ripping my collection to the external drive so that I don't have to deal with disks at all though.
For the keyboard and mouse, I got the logitech dinovo mini keyboard because it has a trackpad integrated in the keyboard. While some of the buttons lack functionality, I will probably use ControllerMate to program them as well as difficult keyboard shortcuts. The other nice thing is if you have a "learning" programable remote because you can program it with the apple remote signal as well as the EyeTV remote and reduce the amount of clutter on the couch.

  • Does the mini DVI port cary audio if using a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter?

    Hello everyone,
I've heard it is possible for a DVI port to transmit audio data to a HDMI connection if a DVI to HDMI cable is used, which will allow the sending of both audio and video to your TV. see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DigitalVisualInterface
I'm assuming this is not possible using apples mini DVI port, but just wanted to check to make sure. My main goal is to get surround sound out of my powerbook. To do this by simply adding a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter would be GREAT!

    Hi Jonathan,
I'm assuming this is not possible using apples mini DVI port
Yup, no audio, unfortunately. The audio will have to transmitted separately via the analog audio output.

  • I am attempting to plug my mac into my tv. I am using the mini dvi to s video adapter. When I plug it in, the display goes all wonky and becomes stretched and enlarged.

When I attempt to connect my mac to the monitor using a mini dvi to s video adapter the display becomes enlarged and stretched. I cannot seem to fix this using the system preferences or the quick keys that allow you to zoom in on the display. Any suggestions?

I am using MAC OSx 10.5.8 (9L31a) as my operation system.  The TV says "No signal.  Check connected device's power, cable connection and source selection."  Seems to me that that goes in hand with what the Samsung tech said about the Mac needing to be forces to use the external display.  But how do I do that?

    Hall Palm Desert,
if your Mac monitor has Thunderbolt ports, and the PC monitor is on the end of the daisy chain, then you might be able to do it by connecting your PC monitor’s VGA cable to a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter (e.g. Apple, NewerTech), connecting that cable’s Mini DisplayPort end to one of the Mac monitor’s Thunderbolt ports, and then connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the other port on the Mac monitor and your MacBook Pro.

Restore iPad to Factory Default; do not restore from backup. It may be the cause of the problem.

  • Help using a mini display port to HDMI cable with MacBook Air and TV

Hi, Apple gurus. I need help setting up my MacBook Air to my Vizio TV using a mini display port to HDMI cable that I just purchased on Amazon.
And here's info about my MacBook Air:
In the Amazon reviews, someone posted the following how-tos, which aren't working for me:
    1. Plug in both ends, mini display port on your macbook and the HDMI on any available port on your LCD.
    2. Go to upper left Apple menu and scroll down to system preference. Or use your FINDER from the dock, go to applications, then system preference.
    3. Click on Displays
    4. Click on DETECT DISPLAY
    5. A similar screen pops up with name of your LCD, mine says SONY LCD, click on ARRANGEMENT
    6. Click the box that says MIRROR DISPLAYS.
    7. Go back into system preferences and go to SOUNDS which is located under HARDWARE.
    8. Click on OUTPUT, then select HDMI, which should be listed next to your LCD name.
I ran into trouble at step #4. My MacBook Air doesn't list the option of "detecting display." I do, however, have the box mentioned in step #6, "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available."
Regarding step #8, HDMI didn't appear in the list — I only see "internal speakers."
So, what am I doing wrong? Or, did I buy the wrong cable?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Or you need to get an appropriate adaptor. The Griffin adaptor sold on Apple's Online Store will work with a standard HDMI cable.

I just bought my cintiq 12wx and was wonderding if i can connect it to my macbook pro 2011 through the thurderbolt using a mini displayport to vga adaptor? Please help!

Yes, it should work with a mini-displayport to VGA adapter.  Since a 12wx also can take DVI you could use a mini-displayport to DVI adapter instead.  Why go analog when you can keep it in digital!
I guess the usb is for the pen.
