Using a non BT router

Just been stung £99 for an Engineer Home Improvement Service charge: broadband speed was slow. The engineer said the router was faulty.
So my question is, if I buy a separate router (not BT) can I plug this in and check myself and save myself from a BT £99 charge? If so, is there a specific type of router I need to get?
I'm on BT Total Broadband (not infinity).

You can use your own router, there are some suggestions here.
I would keep hold of your BT home hub, as it may be needed if you have a fault.
Which home hub version do you have at the moment?

This one is quite popular.

  • How can I share printers using a non apple router, imac to ipad?

Newbie in osx, but experienced in linux.
My new imac has 3 printers setup for sharing, but ipad 2 / iphone 4 fail to see them.  I am using the belkin router that I owned already, instead of buying an Airport.
    I found a solution at askubuntu.com Q 26130 at http://askubuntu.com/questions/26130/how-can-share-my-printer-so-that-i-can-use- it-with-airprint
I setup a linux machine on the network, with no physical connection to any printer. The 1st, an hp fax psc has a usb to imac, as the 2nd, an hp psc, the 3rd printer is an epson wireless, which is only connected on the network by wifi to the belkin router. I'm certain the imac "sharing" is properly setup, because the linux machine has no trouble finding the printers.  Only the ipad / iphone have a problem.
Once I put the linux machine (with the above changes) on the network, everything works as desired.  I can print on the ipad / iphone to any of the 3 printers, using the built in Airport printer routine (not the epson or hp apps). And the imax and linux machines can also print on all 3.
So, I suspect the imac isn't telling the router to display the printers on the network in a way that iOS can see them. I know it would work if I owned an Airport, but I'd rather not spend that much right now.
I'm sure someone knowledgable in OSX might have an idea where to stick an Airport definition file, created from the python script in askubuntu, that could solve this without having to run the linux laptop all the time.  Any ideas?
    TIA

It's possible to use free software (Virtualbox and Ubuntu) to fix the broken iOS 5 Airprint printing with non supported printers.  Here's a fix that works on my imac, but should also work on even a windows pc.
My setup is a lion imac with 2 non-airprint supported usb printers attached, a belkin wifi router that provides network connectivity for my imac, ipad, and iphone.
Install ubuntu 11.10 in a virtualbox vm.  Specify to use the "Bridged Adapter" with "en1: WiFi (AirPort)" for the network hardware.  Make sure the imac's usb printers are setup with sharing.  On ubuntu, select System Settings > Printers and add your imac's shared printers to the list.  Then start ubuntu's firefox and set "localhost:631" in the address. On the administration tab, under the Server section, check "Share printers connected to this system" and hit Change Settings button to activate it.  Go back to ubuntu's printer setup, and right click on each printer and check that the properties Policies tab does not have any messages about it being unshared. If so, then go back to firefox and make sure the Server sharing checkbox is enabled. It may help to reboot.
Fire up virtualbox to be able to use AirPort printing to your imac's usb printers, when you want to print from the iphone or ipad. This also works on iOS 5.
Only problem is error message from iphone to check the printer for errors, even though it actually prints ok.

  • Best non-BT Router for BT Vision Use

Just a question thats been going through my head...
Was the best Non-BT Router (Not HomeHub etc...) for giving a decent connection for BT Vision use??
Im guessing it would have to support this QOS thingy..
has anyone had any positive experiences using a Non BT Router over a longish line while not getting any BT Vision C01/V04 Errors??
    JC

same as above I have used both netgear and Dlink routers with bt vision without any problems and have used a netgear router configured as an Ethernet switch (asdl and dhcp turned off ) connected to the homehub to extend the number of ports available.
i am using a white homehub at the moment simply because i want to use the hub phone

  • How do I use the new Airport Express as an extender for a non-Apple router?

We have an "Arris" router in our house and are thinking of buying an Airport Express to extend the internet. How can we use the Airport express as a repeater on a non-Apple router without having to use millions of ethernet cables?

Apple designed their "extend a wireless network" to only work with other Apple routers wirelessly, so it would be extremely unlikely like it would work with an Arris wireless router.
Your best bet is to always use products from the same manufacturer if you need this type of feature on your network to insure compatibility.
If Arris does not offer a product for this purpose, a "universal" extender like the Netgear device linked below might be able to do what you want. It was not "universal" enough to extend an Apple network when I tested a device recently.
Universal WiFi Range Extender (WN3000RP) - Netgear

  • Can I use an airport express as a range extender to a NON apple router using an internet cable (so not wireless)

can I use an airport express as a range extender to a NON apple router using an internet cable (so not wireless)

Yes, if the AirPort Express is set up to create a wireless network that uses the exact same wireless network name as the other router and the same wireless network password as the other router.

  • Can I Use Airport Express for Airplay and a non-apple router with streaming capabilities on the same network?

I want to do the following things but can't find one device that fits all purpose.
Wi-Fi router that has USB port to share external hard disk wirelessly to all devices (Mac, Samsung Smart TV, PC, Ipad, Iphone) along with inbuilt torrent download capability that also has a 3.5mm jack to do airplay.
Greedy? Yes I know but why can't we have it all I ask.
Airport Express severs Wifi Router + Airplay purpose
Then there are other non-apple routers in market that satisfy my need to attach external hard disk and stream to the devices mentioned (Note: Timecapsule will not stream to my Smart TV)
So I am thinking why not connect both Airport Express and a second non-apple router and get best of both worlds.
    Is it possible?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Connecting iMac and MacBook Pro using a non-Apple wireless router

I use a Belkin wireless router. Is there any way for me to connect iMac and MacBook Pro using the router to share files? I think I read somewhere that I need AirPort Extreme for this, but I'm not sure. Thank you.

Great resource from Dennis...file sharing, I.e. networking, is a function of the operating system settings and not the brand of router. Using Mac OS X 10.6 on both machines makes it really seamless. Following Dennis's kb article should make the two almost act like one machine.

  • Using Airport Express for iTunes on a non-Apple router

In the past, we used a Microsoft wireless router, and all of the Airport Express stations worked great (we have 3). You can start up iTunes, and iTunes showed all three Airport stations in the popup at the bottom, allowing us to pipe our iTunes music to anywhere in the house.
The Microsoft router starting going bad (2 years old), and so we replaced it with a Linksys wireless router (the one that also supports a USB printer). The Linksys is working fine for printing on that USB printer from any computer in our LAN, and it provides all the LAN computers with internet connectivity; however, the Airport Express stations are flakey at best.
At first they didn't even work (aka, didn't show up in iTunes anymore). I ran Airport Admin and connected each one of them to the iMac directly to configure them. After configuring each one, they did start to show up in iTunes. I restored them to their original locations through out the house using wireless connectivity, and they did show up in iTunes and allowed music to play through. Unfortunately, after a day or two, they dropped off, and they never came back. We never had these kinds of headaches with the Microsoft router, so I'm wondering if there is some incompatibility with the Linksys and Airport Express, or if there is some configuration parameter on the Linksys that I need to tweek. Anyone have any ideas?

I have a similar issue with my Airport Express connected to a Linksys wired router (BEFSR41, the common Linksys 4-port router). My iMac is connected (wired) to one of the ports on the Linksys and the AP Express is connected to one of the other ports. Airport Admin on the iMac can't see it unless I manaully connect to it by specifying the IP address (having fixed its IP from my PowerBook via wireless) and (of course) iTunes on the iMac can't see it either.
I had an older generation BEFSR41 and this setup worked great, but they must have changed something. I can't seem to figure out how to disable whatever port-to-port (network jack to network jack on the router that is) that they have added the "blocks" Airport Admin utility from seeing it.

  • Can TC extend a non-apple router via wireless?

I believe this ground has been covered by prior questions, but I just need to confirm before giving up hope.
Can the Apple TC extend a wireless network that eminantes from a non-Apple router (in my case, UBee, Time Warner Cable)?
Our cable modem enters the living room, where it is plugged via ethernet cord to the UBee router. The range just barely reaches my upstairs office. In a perfect work, I'd like to keep the TC in the upstairs office so that I can a) share our USB printer, and b) extend our network to the second floor.
Is this possible? I get the sense that it's not.
    Thanks for all your help,
    Mike

Not possible except with WDS.. which means far too many compromises.. wep security, G only wireless.. and a very good chance it won't work anyway.
Use EOP adapters and setup the TC as a WAP and switch.. or run ethernet .. they are the best ways.
Turn off the wireless on the cable router.. and plug an extreme or express into it.. TC can then extend wireless.
Again this is not the best solution but is the one apple's bottom line really likes.. which is why the limitation is there.

  • Re: using own modem and router

Can anyone help with a query.
I have tried a Netgear 4500 router and it works better, with a higher speed, than the home hub.
BUT I cannot access Vision using it - so I am back to HH4 and slower access.
Are there any settings needed in a non BT router to allow the BT TV to work?

  • Openzone and non BT router

Having noted that a Homehub3 can be swapped for a non-BT router I am wondering what effect (if any) this may have in terms of Openzone / BTFon availability on the non-BT router (i.e. is it still available to other Openzone subscribers?). If not, then would this in turn mean that the non-BT router owner would be inhibited from using Openzone?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

you can use whatever router you want only the home hubs radiate the FON /OPENZONE signal but providing you have signed up to FON you can continue to use openzone /fon

  • Is it possible to use a third party router with BT...

    Hi all,
I currently have BT Infinity & Unlimited calls on my package, but I use a third party router, namely a Netgear WNR3500L in place of my original v2 Infinity Home Hub.
Now, my question is this: Do I have to use a Home Hub with Vision, or would I be okay using my current setup?
I do realise that if I use a third party router, I won't get support from BT.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Wireless non-cisco router with aironet 1242 repeater.

Hello everyone. I'm a newbie here. I just started learning about cisco devices. Sorry if my question seems stupid.
I have a problem. A friend gave me an AP aironet 1242 and he wants to use it as a repeater for his wireless non cisco router.
Is this possible? And if it is how can i do it with simple steps.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the quick response Scott. I 've read this quide before i post.
The problem is that i can't connect with serial to the ap. So i can't use commands.
I can connect with ethernet and see the ap interface. When i go and make the radio0 work as a repeater it shows interface down. What i want is simple steps of how to configure it from the interface.
    Sorry again.

  • Non-wireless router

does any know ..if Verizon offer a good non-wirelss router ...there Actiontec sucks.. i rather get a my own router to hook up to computor ..Verizon service ok but there equipment is lousy...

A non-wireless router? A few simple ways to get one. First of all, the easiest and quickest way is to disable the Wireless Radio in the ActionTec which of course will restrict you to using Ethernet until you enable the radio again. If the ActionTec is giving you other problems besides the wireless though, the Westell 6100 is really the only other thing offered by Verizon that does not have built-in Wireless capabilities. It is a wired router in itself despite only having a single Ethernet port, though you will need to purchase a switch to be able to use it as a router for more than one PC/device. The routing functions can be disabled, so to speak by simply bridging the modem to your router of choice and setting your router to use PPPoE (which is in most Verizon DSL areas, some areas are DHCP though they aren't very common). Additionally, you could see if Verizon can send you a Westell 6110 if any are around, which are pure bridge modems. Lastly, there's always the option of using your own modem and router combination.
