Using A Peecee PSU In My G4

I was wondering if it is a good idea? i know you have to modify the psu for it to work in a sawtooth machine, but the online references ive seen were confusing and not very clear,1 wire you have to hook up to a black wire but does it matter what black wire you use?thanks for any responses and if there are any clearer websites out there please let me know, thanks

Hi, Bill -
Can't answer your questions aboout the wires, but here's a how-to article that may help (unless it's the one you're referring to) -

  • Using 9655006 GI PSU with included 9654983 PSU

Two node Linux-x64 w/ Oracle 11g R2 (no patching at all - installed last March)
Have a few questions about this patch set.
    1. The README states that you need to determine if the "GI Home is shared". How would I know ?
    2. If I know it is shared then I'm to "make sure to shut down the GI stack on all remote nodes". "Keep the GI stack up and
running on the local node". How is this accomplished ? srvctl stop <something> ??
    Appreciate any and all assistance.
    Thanks in advance,
    Brian

Well first of all you need to download latest opatch as i believe when you install oracle it won't have latest one which has auto option.
Also, if you want to install manually on both nodes then you need to unlock grid infrastructure home as root and run or you can do on both node using auto option as mention in readme.
The utility must be executed by an operating system (OS) user with root privileges (usually user root), and it must be executed on each node in the cluster
    #opatch auto <path to GI PSU> -oh <GI_HOME>
To patch one or more RAC database homes, enter a command in the following format:
#opatch auto <path to GI PSU> -oh <path to RAC database1 home>[,<path of RAC database2 home>]Also, you need to bring down has and if using ASM then asm also.

  • A few questions about replacing a PSU with few variations.

So I've spent a lot of time the last few weeks browsing these forums, searching the web, watching eBay, and asking around locally. I am still torn between forking over the $150-$200 for an eBay replacement or trying one of the adapters (http://atxg4.com/mdd.html) with an ATX PSU.
First off, I would like to get a little insight into my problem, to make sure I'm diagnosing it correctly. Two weeks ago I went to turn on my trusty 1GHz FW800 to type a quick document for work. I have been using this machine for over 6 years, without a single problem. The only modifications I made to the machine in the first few years (besides OS updates) was 3 sticks of memory, and another 60gig HD. Two years ago, I wanted to update my vid card to try and squeeze a few more years out of the machine. I went with the ATI 9800pro 128mb card. In order to use my Studio Display with this new card, I had to purchase the DVI to ADC Adapter with it's own power supply. Everything was peachy.
The other night, I pushed my power button, like I've done thousands of times before, and the button lit up like usual, but I didn't hear a fan or any noise coming from the machine, and the power button slowly faded. I then proceeded to push it again, and this time nothing...no light, no noise. And this is how it currently sits...
I've done pretty much everything I can think of to figure out what's wrong. I've tried unplugging and re-plugging, replacing and testing the power cord, using a different surge protector, using a different outlet, resetting the PMU, replacing and testing the battery, and reseating my memory sticks and graphics card. When the machine is plugged in, there are no red lights that glow. So, I followed the PSU test using a multimeter. I removed the black connector cover and stuck the probes in as best I could to get a reading, and I could not get a single reading from the first step of the PSU test. Am I safe to say my PSU is shot? Or...should I get some kind of a reading even if it is shot?
Lastly, I've read that one of the drawbacks of using an ATX PSU is that I will not be able to use my Cinema Display. With my current setup, using the DVI to ADC Adapter with it's own power, will it be possible for me to continue using my Apple Cinema Display if I were to use an ATX PSU? Thanks in advance for any insight/advice anyone can give!

The power Supply adapter page says you won't have the 25V for the Cinema Display. Your other power just may work. Hopefully, someone else who has done the ATX mod & has a cinema display will respond.
Suggest you also post your question in the cimena display forum at http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=111

  • Do I REALLY NEED such a powerful PSU???

    Guys,
My problem is on the thread ("Daily Crashing - Total Hardware Shutdown"):
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=48219&sid=
I appreciate all your advice about upgrading from my Nexus NX-3500 PSU .... I had previously written 350W with 18A on the 12V rail .... actually upon closer inspection the specs are 330W with 16A on the 12V rail.  Ok, I know this is not powerful enough, but as I said, I'm going to be using this PC for music recording, using very sensitive condenser microphones, and the PSUs recomended (Enermax 465 etc) really seem too loud.... the Enermax, for example, has a *minimum* load noise level of around 39dB(A)!  That might not interfere with the needs of a gamer or office worker, but it's really just too loud for use with recording.... once you get that unwanted noise recorded in audio, it's virtually impossible to remove it.
It's been possible to build totally silent pc systems, using this same PSU, with Athlon XP CPUs.  I understand now that the A64 (and the MSI board it seems) needs a lot of power, but the figures that have been suggested to me (450W-550W) seem very heavy.  Reasons for thinking so:
MESH (http://www.meshcomputers.com) is perhaps the largest UK PC retailer and regularly wins awards for reliability etc etc from all the top UK PC magazines.  They allow you to configure an Athlon 64 system with the follwing spec:
    * ATX tower
    * A64 3000+, 32000+, 34000+ and the A64FX versions
    * 2 SATA Hard Drives in Raid
    * up to 1GB RAM
    * TOP graphics cards (I mean the ones costing hundreds of pounds ... mine is bottom-end and should require a lot less power than these)
    * DVDRW
    * 2nd Optical Drive
    * Floppy
    ***** PSU 360W *****
Now, they also offer extensive warranties with these systems.  My question is, would they offer this much power in a PC, with a full warranty, and be rated at the top of PC retailers in the UK, if their 360W PSU was not sufficient?  Now, my PC is LESS POWERFUL than the ones listed above, so why do I need to get a PSU thats so much more powerful?  Incidentally, they use the ASUS K8V Deluxe motherboard with the A64 systems ... does this board handle power better than my MSI KT8 NEO?... allowing you to use smaller PSUs?
Furthermore, if you look at MESH's Shuttle-case (v.v.small) versions of the Athlon64 system ... they supply it with a 240W PSU!
Finally, if you look at Sound On Sound magazine (which any of you remotely involved in music production will know) ... this month they did a review of silent PSUs .. and said that owners of 3GHz or faster CPUs, with 2 Hard Drives and 1GB of RAM, would probably be best served with 400W PSUs.  The 500W etc PSUs were recommended for dual-cpu systems or those with multiple DSP cards.
I won't be playing games on this machine, or watching movies (which is why I just went for the bottom model GeForce graphics card FX5200 ... it doesn't even have a fan, so it shouldn't take up that much power).  A lot of you guys seem to have top-end graphics cards, and 3 or more hard disks, as well as faster CPUs than mine, so you should need more power than me.  In light of this, and bearing in mind that I really do need a very quiet PSU ... can you recommend something?  Will 400W really not be enough?
Silenx and Seasonic make 400W PSUs with 22A on the 12V rail.  Is this not sufficient?  The Silenx is supposed to work at 14dB(A) ... load is not specified.
Please advise ... any comments much appreciated as really need to get this sorted fast.
    Fizz

Some reviews say there was not enough +12V power leads. Even when they purchased a Y-Splitter, the Enermax power supply did not have enough power, which does not sound so good for me. Besides the color, what is the difference between the VE(FM), VE-SFMA, VE(FC), VE 24P, VE(FCA)??? I went to Enermax's website and looked under power supplies and I could not find anything on those EG465P models (must be old models). Which EG465P power supply do you have Jocko? And which one do you recommend from the list above? Thanks.
    Hi Exion,
Yes the first one looks OK, as long as it has a 4 pin square connector for Mobo, and an independant 4 pin Molex for Vid card. Don't see connectors listed.
The second one is the one that SAB had I think, the 12v rail is split into 2 rails, not so good.  The others, if its a bad review, leave it.
As long as its at least a 465 enermax with 33amps on the 12v, a square  4 pin connector, and an independant line for vid card ( I think latest ones may have 2 independant 12v lines) then you can't go wrong.
    cheers

  • IDVD disks won't play in home DVD player. They used to

    Hi, can you help
I'm using iDVD 5, iMovie 5, saving as disk image, mounting image and burning using Toast 6 to firewire LaCie D2 DVD burner. I have done this many times using same configuration, but not for a while. The disks created will play in the Mac, but not in the home DVD player.
I have tested the burner using a peecee and it creates other types of DVDs OK. This has got me stumped because I don't seem to be doing anything I haven't done before. I've tried different disks, cleaned the DVD player, everything. In addition I have tried burning disks from some old disk images I had saved from previous movie creations. Same result. Is the problem likely to be with Toast?

Still no luck. I have tried using some Verbatim -Rs and have the same results, if not worse, since the disks created won't mount in my Mac either.
In answer to klaus, yes the Mac does recognise the LaCie drive.
I'm starting to think the problem is with iDVD or iMovie since I have tried creating a disk image, copying to my Peecee, running through Shrink to generate a 'clean' series of Video_TS, Audio_TS folders, and burnt them from my peecee, which still doesn't work, even though I know that older and other movies play OK in my DVD player.

  • Sorting out ASM PSU application

    Oracle db 11.2.0.1.0 SE-One
    Oracle ASM 11.2.0.2.0
    Oracle Linux 5.6 64-bit
    Single instance db. No RAC.
The system I have inherited (which is my first ASM system) is configured as above. I would like to upgrade everythinig to 11.2.0.3.
It appears that there is one single 112.0.3.0 PSU, which includes both database and grid infrastructure. Looking at the installation guides that come with it, the db installation guide (E24321-06) has a section on ASM and GI. There is also a seperate installation guide (E22489-03) for the GI. The second is bulked up with a lot of stuff pertaining to RAC, which I don't care about, but it is sometimes hard to seperate the two. Both guides talk a spend a lot of time on things that would apply to an initial install and getting asm configured in the first place. I'm having a hard time parsing out what needs to be done just to upgrade an existing asm instance to a new PSU.
    Note that I don't have RAC, I'm only upgrading from 11.2.0.2 to 11.2.0.3 -- not a major upgrade like 10.x to 11.x
I certainly don't mind re-reading the docs yet again, but I fear I'm getting to where I can't see the forest for the trees.
    Any pointers would be appreciated.

OK, I think I'm closing in on it. I really like the out-of-place patch, but the docs are really leaving something to be desired. Maybe in my old age my brain isn't as sharp as it once was, or maybe I'm just less tolerant of docs that send you on a rabbit hunt. And I realize I used the term PSU inappropriately for what I am looking for.
After looking more carefully I realized I had glossed over the details I was looking for becuase they were under section headers that led me to believe I wasn't interested in that particular content - like single sentence saying to use OUI for an ASM upgrade -- under a section on using asmca....
In any event, I built a sandbox under VBox, installed ASM 11.2.0.1 and database 11.2.0.1, had them working, then used the OUI that came with the patchset for ASM. It was actually pretty painless, with the biggest issue being that the rootupgrade.sh script twice appeard to have hung. A couple of steps took 5-10 minutes each but when I was patient, it eventually finished and my asm instance was running under 11.2.0.3.0. Trying to de-install the old 11.2.0.1 home is another adventure!
Thanks for helping me get back on track.

  • Using IDE DVD drives on a MSI P67A-GD65 motherboard

I am upgrading from a previous build and I want to keep my 2 slot loading DVD/R drives, but they are both IDE.
I tried using a PCI to IDE card from Bytech but that didn't work well.  I think my best chance will be with a SATA to IDE converter.
    Any ideas?

You mean (flat cable) P-ATA drives? IDE can be associated as both S-ATA & P-ATA drives. Search the net for suitable converters & adapters. Maybe keep the old system for a backup rig. Upgrading to newer systems using older parts & PSU's is often not such a good idea.

  • HP Z400 600W PSU, reduce the noise?

Hello, i bought the 600W psu a few months ago because i wanted to have a great graphic card.
But i think the noise from the computer is way to loud. Im verry sure its the PSU since the 475W version was verry quiet when i tried it.
Can i do anything to reduce the noise from this thing? Open it, replace the fan to a better one perhaps?
I know there are some people who have managed to get a ATX PSU into their HP z400 using a "HP Z400 PSU to standard atx adaptor" but i dont really know  how to build a cable like that... Its probably easy but i have no knowledge about things like this.

Interesting setup by MSI in Computex Taipei 2006.
    http://sg.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?id=1928&cid=19&pg=1

I believe that if you use a good PSU, it should not be a problem... It just the caps that needs more power to double or triple the intial kick start power.

  • Do I need another PSU?

    Hi
I built a new pc from components, and surpise, surprise it wont post. Basicly eveything seems fine but it just hangs at the msi logo when I turn it on. I think the problem is my power supply; as the keyboard or mouse don't seem to be getting any power (caps lock light wont work, optical mouse has no light etc) and I also know that my power suply is a little...erm..crap. It's a magma 500W but can only manage 17A at +12V, and I also know my graphics card is power hungry too. The 4 leds on the back pannel suggest "will set low stack and boot via INT 19h" (one red led in the corner). I have tried:
    - to replace the RAM with an old 256mb twinmos DDR 2100 stick
    - replacing grahics card with a radeon 9600
    - taking a stick of my elixir ram out
    - unplugging the DVD rom
    - using a 350W PSU (although this is equally as bad at only 16A @ 12V)
    - changing power supply cables
    - clearing CMOS with the jumper on the motherboard
Reading the psu thread it seems pretty obvious that my psu isnt up to the job, I know, but I don't want to buy another one if there is something else that could be the problem...

    Hi
If you see Logo, CPU should be OK, Bios won't see USB k/bd + mice, until OS loaded.  PSU get an enermax 465, single rail 33 amps on +12v

    Hi All
I am using a Zebronics PSU, the ratings are as below:
    230VAC 50-Hz MAX Power output:400W
    3.3 (28A) 5v(40A) 12V(17A)
I am thinking of buying an ANTEC  TRUEPOWER 430W or 550W, please let me know whether I should go ahead and buy an ANTEC or whether My existing power ratings are good.
    Thanks
    Roger

    Hi All
Thanks Guys for all the suggestions, I am buying a new Antech True Power 550W PSU. It does cost me a fortune (the price of the PSU = AMD+MSI+Geforce) but I think it is worth it and I wouldn't repent spending on it.
As far as Raven's suggestion of considering EnerMAX, I did consider EnerMAX but I don't have dealers in India, in fact there were no dealers for Antec as well but somehow with the help of Antec I did manage to find one.
One more thing which I want to share with u guys is that in India people don't give much importance to PSU's, they use whatever comes with the case. But I have been into computers long enough to understand the need for a good PSU and also thanks to u guys and the sticky threads some amount of info is going into my brains and  now I can share this knowledge with people around me.
    Thanks again
Hope to share and spread the Knowledge and keep gaming........

  • Does Premiere Pro 2 use graphics card for playback?

Does Premiere Pro 2 use graphics card for playback? I am using a 350W PSU, so my nVidia 6600GT runs in low-power mode, and my video playback in Premiere is choppy. The same .avi files play fine in a media player, so it can't be a disc issue I guess... Please advise, thank you!

Only the latest CS5 uses SELECTED card's GPU for video acceleration
    >same .avi files play fine in a media player
Playback is not at all the same as editing
Use the FREE http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ to find out what codec is inside that AVI wrapper
Anything other than DV AVI type 2 with 48khz sound is not going to do well in Premiere

  • System Resets itself after about 1 to 2 hours use

    Hi guys,
I had setup my system for about 2 months now.  Bios is version 1.90.
I encountered my system resetting itself without warning, sometimes after 1 to 2 hours use, sometimes, even 30 minutes use.  I am using Intel CPU stock fan and getting startup CPU temperature of 44 deg C and about 50 deg C after a few hours use.  Sometimes, the system is stopped and shows the blue screen warning.  A warm reset brings my system back up again.
    Suspect:
    1.  Since I have many peripherals, I am worried about my PSU whether it is able to take it.  The power calculator at http://www.adecy.com/psu/ recommended 570W.  No way to get that man!  I am willing to consider a new PSU of maximum 480W (within my budget) but if it means that I can continue to use the current PSU but with risk of shortened lifespan, I'm ok to stick to this.
    2.  Maybe the Y-Connectors cables might becomes loose sometimes.  Thinking of changing the cables to better tight fitting ones (difficult to find though).
    3.  Overclocking - Don't think so because if I didnot remember wrongly, even at 2.8GHz without o/c, the sudden resets did happen before.
Hope someone can give me a suggestion.  Thanks in advance.
    System Configuration:1.  Mobo 875P Neo-Fis2R
    2.  Intel PIV 2.8c --> 3.03GHz (FSB = 217)

    8.  WDC 800JB 80GB Hdd to Promise 378 raid 0
    9.  Intel OEM modem
    10.  Canopus Storm 2 PCI card
    11.  Enermax Power Supply 350W,
    +5 V = 32A
    +12 V = 17A
    +3.3V = 32A
    -5 V = 1A
    -12 V = 1A
    -3.3V = 2.2A

When you use the calculator, you have to decide how much you want to load your system up. Eg you have 8 USB ports, how many to you actually use?
This is what I calculated (guessed at the fans):
    Recommended PSU: 401W (151W on +3.3v & +5v rails) for:
-1 x Motherboard without onboard devices
-4 x Fans (including PSU fans)
    -8 x Memory (128MB DDR)
    -1 x Graphic Card
    -1 x with powerful 3D Accelerator
    -3 x HDD
    -1 x Keyboard
    -1 x Mouse
    -CPU: Intel P4 (2.8D GHz 0.13 µm µPGA478 @ 1.525 V with HTT)
The 350W PSU does look on the light side. I don't have a good feel for the Canopus Storm 2 PCI card. Looked it up and it looks like it probably draws as much power as a top end video card. Also, the CPU power requirement goes up with overclocking.
