Using a POP mail account in mac mail

My friend has an AT&T sbcglobal POP mail account he has added to his mac mail app. Since it is POP mail it is not always received in his mac mail box if AT&T Yahoo account receives it first. I guess he can prevent the Yahoo mail box from downloading the messages if he signs out of the Yahoo account. But he also has an iPhone. So will he still have the race problem between the computer & the iPhone on which gets the mail first?
Appreciate any suggestions on how this can be solved?

For POP:
The following mail server settings will work with all AT&T email domains: @ameritech.net, @att.net, @bellsouth.net, @flash.net, @nvbell.net, @pacbell.net, @prodigy.net, @sbcglobal.net, @snet.net, @swbell.net, @wans.net.
Email Program Settings Field:
Enter:
Incoming (POP)
inbound.att.net
Outgoing (SMTP)
outbound.att.net(requires authentication)
Incoming mail server:
POP3
Incoming/Outgoing User Name:
Full AT&T email address, including domain (e.g., [email protected], [email protected])
Incoming mail port #:
995, secure connection (SSL) checked
Outgoing mail port #
465, secure connection (SSL) checked
I assume the settings you are refering to gives that delay for marking the messages as read when highlighted for that period of time. Probably for scrolling through the list without changing the unread status. Lion doesn't have that selection, so I can't test that at the moment.

  • Adding family mail accounts to Mac mail

I have set up my mail account to receive mail from Hotmail. Can I also add my children's mail or is it just for one user?

The Mail app can receive messages from any number of different email accounts at once.  However, it might be better to give your children separate user accounts on the Mac with parental controls, and set up Mail for each user accordingly.

  • If you delete a POP mail account in Mac Mail can you get your mails back?

This has happened to a client of mine. She'd just set up a new account for her email as she'd moved servers. She had an old POP mail account on her Mac Mail for two years which she deleted and now all of her old sent mails are gone plus everything from the inbox that wasn't moved into folders.
How do you get those emails back? (I'm not sure if she has been using Time Machine to back everything up)
Will re-creating the old account help?

If she hasn't been backing up with Time Machine (or a full backup which hasn't been overwritten) they are gone. Recreating the account won't being them back.
If she has Time Machine, open (user)/Library/Mail in the Finder and then enter Time Machine. Navigate backwards looking for a folder named POP- and the name of the account. Use TM to restore that.

  • What is the process for adding an AOL mail account into Mac Mail?

    Frustrating.
All I want to do is add another AOL mailbox account into my Mac mail.
No threads could I find, and nothing on Google either. But I did do it once before as I have my primary AOL mail account dumping into my Mac mail.
If I go into File> Import Mailboxes there is NOTHING that says AOL in to menu! I mean it should be the first or second choice considering how many people use AOL mail.
A little help for a URL that can tell me what to doe in Leopard to bring in another AOL mail account?
    Thanks,

Are you trying to create the account in Mail or import mailboxes? Doing what you did won't create an account, it'll just try to import a mailbox. To create an AOL account in Mail, see:

    Hello,
You can't upgrade to any faster, & especially not to an Intel CPU needed to run Lion/10.7 for full iCloud usage.
You can have limited use of iCloud the way it is, you can view all of iCloud in a Browser, You can use Find my Phone I hear, & you can use IMAP Mail for syncing, but no other syncing.

  • HT1277 I can not configure my major mail account at Mac Mфail - other accounts such as Hotmail and Gmail are working great. Also, I am using that major account at iPhone and iPad with no problem

hello. I can not configure my major mail account at Mac Mфail - other accounts such as Hotmail and Gmail are working great. Also, I am using that major account at iPhone and iPad with no problem. I had contacted mail provider - we had followed step by step all the settings,, they are correct, and I was suggested to use another mail program. Why, for God's sake I should use different programs for different mail accounts? Anyone, had the same problem?

it says - IMAP - Trying to log into this IMAP account is failed - Verify that username and password are correct
    same for SMTP

  • Can't remove MobileMe/iCloud account from Mac Mail

I don't use my MobileMe email address for email, so I have it forwarded to my Gmail address that I do check. Previously, any alerts that went to that account (reminders that I set in iCal, which I sync to my Google Calendar, and alerts when I use Find My Phone or Find My iPad) were routed to the Gmail address, because that's where I was forwarding the .Me email.
However, ever since transitioning over to iCloud, those alerts are popping up in Mail, which I don't use. I've gone into Mac Mail and deleted the iCloud account, but as soon as there's a new message the account gets created again and Mail opens up and displays the alert as an email message. The messages are not forwarded to my Gmail account, despite it showing in preferences in iCloud > Mail that I have the "forward mail" box checked and the correct Gmail address still in there.
Any ideas on this? I need to receive these alerts but I don't use my Mobile Me email address for anything else and I don't want to have to log into my computer to open Mail and see if I got an alert.

Typically, right after I posted this, I managed to do it!!
For the benefit of anyone else: rather than choosing Yahoo from the menu, I clicked 'Add Another Account' (thinking I could manually add the IMAP settings|) and it worked...didn't even need to input them myself...

  • Accessing my hotmail.co.uk account through mac mail - deeply frustrated!!!

Hello everyone, and thanks for your patience as I know very similar queries have been answered already in previous discussions.
I have just bought my first mac after years of pc use.
I would love to be able to access my hotmail.co.uk account through mac mail on os x tiger.
However, despite following all previous posts as accurately as I possibly can, this still won't work. For this reason, I have transcribed absolutely everything I enter into the account setup below, to see if anyone can detect why this isn't working.
I have downloaded httpmail (http://www.automagic-software.com/products.php) as suggested on previous posts.
Also as suggested on a previous discussion, I have set mail to run using rosetta, to help deal with any complications I may face using my intel macbook.
My email address is [email protected]
Now, when I go to set up my account on mail, I enter:
    PAGE 1: GENERAL INFORMATION
    Account type: httpmail
    Account description: Hotmail acccount
    Full name: Alistair White
    Email address: [email protected]
    PAGE 2: INCOMING MAIL SERVER
    Incoming mail server: www.hotmail.co.uk
    Username: awhitetbn
    Password: ******
I am then presented with the account summary:
    Account description: Hotmail account
    Full name: Alistair White
    Email address: [email protected]
    Username: awhitetbn
    Incoming mail server: www.hotmail.co.uk
    SSL: off
    Outgoing mail server: services.msn.com:awhitetbn
    SSL: off
Next page: Conclusion: a new account has been created.
Ok! All seems well, so I send a test email. However, I get the following message:
Cannot send message using the server services.msn.com:awhitetbn
Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server.
However, in the pop-up menu, the only option I have is:
    send message using: HTTPmail:awhitetbn
I would dearly love this to work and I sense I am not far from the solution... If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. Where am I going wrong?
    Many many thanks
    Alistair White

If you selected the Universal version of the httpmail plugin for download which installs a combination version that is compatible with Intel or PPC Macs , there is no reason to set the Mail.app to run under Rosetta on your Intel Mac.
The sending problem is with your internet service provider and not the Mail.app or the httpmail plugin.
Do you have access to an email account and SMTP server that is provided by your internet service provider used for connecting to the internet and if so, have you used your ISP's email account in the past with an email client on a Windows PC or via webmail access for the account?
Most if not all ISPs now block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network or not provided by the ISP on Port 25 which is the default or standard port used for all SMTP servers. Some ISPs allow the use of an authenticated SMTP server only that is outside of their network on Port 25 but some block its use regardless. These restrictions are part of an overall effort to prevent spam emanating from the ISP's domain.
    First option to try.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account Information tab for your Hotmail account preferences at the SMTP server selection, select the Server Settings button below for the Hotmail SMTP server.
Enter 587 in place of 25 in the Server Port field and when finished, select OK to save the changed setting.
If this doesn't work and you have access to an email account and SMTP server provided by your ISP, you can create/access your ISP's account with the Mail.app or at least add your ISP's SMTP server to the Mail.app as an available SMTP server to choose from.
Select/use your ISP's SMTP server to send messages with your Hotmail account and with any email account not provided by your ISP.

  • Can I set up an email account in Mac mail if it already exists in mac for outlook?

Can I set up an email account in mac mail if it already exists in mac outlook or do I need to delete the outlook account first? I have tried to set it up and its not working.

Mail and Outlook are two different applications, so you can maintain the same account in both, incl sending and receiving.
What matters is that the setup is correct. E.g., is it a POP3 or IMAP account? By default, IMAP stores all mails on the (ISP's) server, while POP3 usually deletes it there after it's been received. So, with IMAP you'd easily have your mails everywhere, in every client, while with POP3 it's only in the client which you used most recently, so to speak.

  • Adding account in  Mac Mail

How can I add a new account in Mac Mail please?
Using a Macbook Pro, Yosemite, and latest version of Mail.

    Hi gaginker,
Thanks for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
Here's how to add a new email account in the Mail application:
To add another account, choose Mail > Add Account, select an account type, then enter your account information. Make sure the Mail checkbox is selected for the account.
If you already use an account on your Mac with other apps, such as Notes or Messages, you can also use the account with Mail. Choose Mail > Accounts to open Internet Accounts preferences, select the account on the left, then select the Mail checkbox on the right.
    From:
Mail (Yosemite): Set up Mail with your email accounts
Depending on your email provider, you may need to find out the settings mentioned in this article:
Mail settings you might need from your email provider - Apple Support
For some email providers, you might need to know certain settings when setting up Mail. You can use the worksheet in this article to find out which settings you need.
Mail automatically configures your email accounts based on your email address for many email providers. If the information is not readily available, Mail prompts you to enter additional settings such as incoming and outgoing mail server addresses. You need to know these settings in order to set up Mail manually. This information comes from your email provider (such as Yahoo or Hotmail).
    Sincerely,
    Jeremy

  • How sync mail accounts between Mac and iPhone!!

    Hi,
May a trivial and stupid question but never found an answer!
How easily sync mail account information (preferences of each mail account) between mac's (Mac Mini and Mac Book Pro) and iPhone?
Sorry to say that but it's so easy in Windows!! Just check the option box in itunes!!
For now, I use iCloud, define to sync mail and connected with same account on all my mac and iPhone ... nothing happened!
Oh yes, sorry, I have three accounts out of 13 who appear!!! But WHY?
I red somewhere that the account information (password) must be saved in keychain ... ok ... but how do I change that for all account?
I tried to remove one and recreate ... no success ... doesn't appear.
Why is it so complicated to have that working as the Mac is so user-friendly?
I also try a search on Apple site ... no explanation!
Some one with a clear and simple "How To" to share?
    MANY THANKS!
    Pierre
