Using a powerbook install on ibook

Hello
I just got this ibook G4 running OS 10.3.9. This did not come with the install disk. I have a set of disk from a powerbook G4 which is 10.4 Is there any risk of running this install set on my ibook. I would really like a fresh install of the OS. The girl I bought this from did not have the disk for this ibook. Any info would help. This is my first apple. The disk I got off of CL so I don't want to mess up a good thing at this point. I just want to get everything in my name.
Thank you for any help you can offer. Plus this runs fine but when I type it lags a bit is there anyway to fix that.

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The gray disks may or may not work on your computer. Before attempting anything, I suggest that you make a full clone of your current installation of Panther to an eternal firewire HDD using a utility like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
Check and see exactly which iBook G4 you have. Can you post back with a) processor speed b) 12'/14"? Go to Apple menu > About this Mac and processor speed info there. Also, on the iBook install disks check the version of 10.4 and report back. The last release of iBook G4 1.33 GHz (late 2004) came with Mac OS X 10.3.7 (7T52) or 10.4 (8A428) and the iBook G4 (mid 2005) 14" 1.42 GHz and 12" 1.33 GHz, shipped with Mac OS X 10.4.2 (8D37) and later with Mac OS X 10.4.4 (8G32). If you have a match of disk and computer you can boot the iBook G4 directly and install. If you don't have a match it may still work but it may not, thus the backup.

  • Can I use DVD to install os 10.3 on a tangerine?

I have bought a tangerine iBook for my wife. I should get it soon. I will upgrade memory and hard drive. But I need to find out if I can use my OS 10.3 DVD install disks on it. If not, can I use my PowerBook to install it on the Tangerine? I do not belive the iBook has a Firewire on it. Any help is appreciated.

If you're ambitious you could put the new drive in your powerbook, load the OS, then take it out and place it in the ibook. I'm not sure as to what effect the installing of 'Powerbook specific' system components will have on the clamshell however - I can't see there being a problem though. If your ibook surprisingly comes with a firewire port then you could install to it via target disc mode. All this of course assuming your DVD allows it.

  • Can I use my Powerbook 12" without the internal HD?

    Hi everybody!
I have a Hard Drive (160GB, Samsung) in my Powerbook12", that's about to fail. I bought it less than a year ago, so I can get a new one for free, except that I have to pay for, or do, the extraction from the computer. As some time may elapse before they send me the replacement drive that I will install, I wondered if I would be able to temporarily use my Powerbook, booting from an external firewire hard drive, but with no internal hard drive. Thanks for your help!

Thank you for your answer. In fact, I was wondering if the physical absence of the internal HD might be a problem when reassembling the computer to use it, this led me to the idea of installing the old initial internal drive, which I was given back when my present hard drive was installed. Does this make any sense?
Or can I really reassemble my computer leaving the hard drive bracket empty, and make it work?
More generally, are there other options for upgrading a 12" 1.33 GHz Powerbook, apart from increasing the hard drive size and RPM?

  • Trying to do a clean install on iBook G4 - Freezing

I received a G4 iBook and want to do a clean install to erase the previous owner's hard drive and add all my own applications.
When I put the disk in it asks me to use a password, which I have and the computer restarts. But just as the grey apple icon appears in the center of the screen, it slighly shifts tot he right, a line of pixels appear to burn out, and the screen is frozen. I then have to restart holding down the mouse button and the eject button to get the disk to eject. When it restarts without the disk inside the computer runs fine and the pixels are no longer "burned out"
The laptop has 10.3.9, the disk I am using to clean install is the original 10.3 disk (I was planning to update after the install)
    Can anyone help?

You won't need to use a password if have the disk inserted and choose restart and then hold down the C key until the grey screen/apple logo appears.

  • Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs

Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs
The question of using system/software install CDs/DVDs on more than one machine is frequently asked.
    So, FYI:
System software installation CDs/DVDs, that come with a particular Mac model, are hardware specific to that model, and not intended to be used on other Mac models. For instance, the CDs/DVDs that are shipped with an iMac are not to be used on an iBook or eMac.
And the "Tiger" DVDs that are shipped with any new Mac, also are not to be used on other Mac models.
If such an installation were possible, or somehow accomplished successfully, that action would constitute a violation of your license agreement, which limits installation to a single computer.
The "Single User Software License Agreement" can be found here Software License Agreement.
Similarly, any "Upgrade" CDs/DVDs for a particular Mac OS will ONLY work for that Mac & system. For example, if a new Mac that shipped with Jaguar/Panther, was purchased shortly before the release of Panther/Tiger, the user may have purchased "Upgrade" CDs/DVDs, for a lesser price than the full install set. These CDs/DVDs do not contain all of the necessary components for an independent installation of Panther or Tiger.
The license agreement applies to single user retail versions of system software. The "Panther" or "Tiger" boxed set, for example.

Here are the requirements for Lion:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/06/07/mac-os-x-10-7-lion-system-requirements/
In order to install Lion you have to have Snow Leopard and then update to 10.6.8:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Personally I suggest that you stop at Snow Leopard.  It still is the most efficient OS that Apple has devised and it still works great.  Go to the Lions only if there are feature that you really need.  There may be a price to pay in slower performance though.
    Ciao.

  • Any USB adaptor other than PCMCIA can be used in Powerbook G3?

    Hi all,
Any USB adaptor other than PCMCIA can be used in Powerbook G3 (as no USB)?
My powerbook G3 is installed with MacOSX 10.2 and i want to access my portable Hard Disk (format under windows platform) . . . is that possible to access like "plug and play" using USB adaptor ?
    Many thanks.

    white_tiger,
You can use both FireWire and USB CardBus PC cards. CardBus supports both 32-bit and the older PCMCIA 16-bit protocols.
A FireWire PC card is natively supported in all versions of OSX...no drivers to install.
USB 1.1/2.0 PC cards are also natively supported but it gets a little more complicated:
    - The older USB 1.1 cards work fine under all versions of OSX.
    - The newer USB 2.0 cards also work under all versions of OSX with this caveat: Apple added USB 2.0 support to OSX 10.2.8 and later; if your USB 2.0 card does not have the NEC-based USB2 chipset and you are running 10.2.8 or later, the card will not work properly. USB 2.0 PC cards with the wrong chipset, however, will work properly with OSX up through 10.2.7 but at the slower 1.1 speeds..
    A few other points:
    - PC cards supply only a minimal amount of bus power, so if you want to connect a portable FW or USB HD, it will need its own power supply.
    - A Mac can only read/write to Fat and Fat32 drives; OSX 10.3 and 10.4 can see an NTFS drive but as read-only.

  • When I try to install the ibooks app it asks me to verify my account but will not accept my security number.

When i try to install the ibooks app on my ipod touch 4 it shows me my apple account details but says that the security number is incorrect. I have not as yet used my account is this the problem?

It is a problem if you can;t download/install apps.  If you are sure that the card data is correct and the card is valid I would contact the itunes store.  I would go here and select iTunes Store Account and Billing.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Are you posting with it here?
How long has it been since you did any hard drive maintenance?
After six years of use, the hard drive may be so full that it is hampering performance.
    From http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html  :
Determine the available space on your Mac OS X startup disk
In Finder®, select the startup disk icon. For most users, this is Macintosh HD.
    Press the Command-I keyboard shortcut.
The Info window for your startup disk opens. In the General pane, the Capacity, Available (free space), and space Used on your startup disk is displayed, as seen in the following screen shot:
As a general rule of thumb: if the Available space on the Mac OS X startup disk is less than 10 GB, it is time to free some disk space. We suggest 10 GB as an absolute minimum as this is generally the amount of free space required to reinstall Mac OS X 10.5 and earlier via an Archive and Install and still preserve space for VM swap files. More free space is better. For example, users of FileVault may want to retain more free space than that occupied by their encrypted Home folder: disabling FileVault requires free space somewhat greater than the size of your encrypted Home folder.
Even though Mac OS X 10.4 doesn't take as much space as Mac OS X 10.5, you still need to keep quite a bit of free space on your hard drive. A too-full hard drive is a common cause of system slowdowns.
If you find that you do have enough disk space, post back and we will explore other potential problems.

  • Using a PowerBook on a cruise ship

    Hi everyone,
I'm currently on board Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas and frustrated because I can't use my PowerBook to connect to its WIFI service. I've found other frustrated PowerBook and iBook owners with the same problem and the help desk keeps saying the network is only for computers running Windows.
I know from reading cruise-related message boards that other Mac users have been able to use the WIFI service. I'm hoping there is someone on here who has had success doing that and can post the network configuration, if they can remember.
    Thanks in advance!

What are the instructions for windows users? we can
start there and see if we can talk you through the
set-up. There aren't windows only networks.. just ill
    informed network techs
You also might want to try the airport forums:

Don't let this ruin your vacation.. go out and get
some sun for those of us here at work
Thanks, Sandman, for the quick response but my Internet minutes ran out shortly after my post. I'm back on shore now and had a great cruise despite the inability to get my PowerBook connected.
There were no instructions for getting online... they said launching a browser would automatically connect you to their WIFI service and you just had to log in.
It was very frustrating for myself and two iBook owners who specifically brought our laptops after reading from other cruise-ship passengers who reported successfully they were able to use their Macs on board.
The ship's IT staff repeated their system only supports Windows -- which is a crock, as you suggested -- and wouldn't even try to help out a Mac user. One fellow cruise passenger said the IT guy she spoke to had a look of horror on his face when "Mac" was brought into the conversation.
No doubt Royal Caribbean does not wish to support Mac computers and therefore tells people plainly that their system does not work with Macs. It's ironic that its corporate web site is designed to work with Safari.
Myself and the other Mac users that were on board plan to write letters/e-mail and complain about the lack of support for Mac users.
Thanks again for your reply. I didn't even think to post my question on the Airport forum, which would've been more appropriate.
    Cheers!

  • Moving from PowerBook G4 to iBook G4

I am moving from a PowerBook G4 running OS10.3.9 to an iBook G4 running OS10.5.6. I have transferred files and apps using a Firewire connector by rebooting and holding down "t" on the PowerBook and then dragging and dropping the desired files to the iBook. I had hoped that by moving my browser (Firefox), Mail, and Address Book apps from the PowerBook to the iBook and opening them on the iBook that the bookmarks, addresses, etc. would come with them. This has not been the case, and I've gotten an error msg saying that this version of Mail will not run on the OS10.5.6. Any suggestions on how I might accomplish transferring the addresses and bookmarks? Thx.

Thank you. I tried that, but the Firefox bookmarks did not transfer; neither did the playlist from iTunes. The solution was to go into each app and export the bookmarks and the playlist. Everything else worked as it should.

  • Help w/ used g3 powerbook

I recently purchased a used g3 powerbook as a Christmas gift for my 9 year old. It is running OS 9. I want to know if there is an easy way to restore it? I use a G4 powerbook but bought it as a first time Mac user and don't know much about it, just opened it and it worked! I know that on a PC there is a restore CD, anything like that for Mac? Also would like to know options for wi fi. Thanks for any help anyone can give!

    Hi Michael
In my opinion, you should by OSX and put as much ram memory as you can afford now. After that, use the OSX installation disk to complete erase the HD (there is an option to do so on installation process). Then you will begin from scratch.
If you decide not to buy OSX, insert the OS9 disk, reboot from CD (hold C key during restart), look for disk utilities / drive setup. this program will help you reformat your HD. After that, you should install OS9.
I would recommend one of these 2 ways to start your computer from scratch.
    Congratulations on your new mac.

  • Can I transfer an e-book from my Mac laptop to my iPhone?  I have installed the iBook app, but don't know if I can transfer my e-books..

Can I transfer an e-book from my Mac laptop to my iPhone?  I have installed the iBook app, but don't know if I can transfer my e-books.

Be careful with the transfer talk.  Keynote for the pad and the mac are slightly different- so make sure the template they plan to sell you will work on the pad, as opposed to a mac.
If you can get it as a file, you can e mail it to your self, or stick it in drobobx and bring it down, or use your normal syncing device.
How are you syncing your pad now, with a PC?
if they are selling it for the pad, they must have a way to get it to you. So spend some time on their website and see if they have some good instructions for you.

  • I have an iPad 2 and used old Apple ID for iBook app; now it wants to upgrade but I have a new Apple ID, how can I make certain I don't lose any data in my iBooks?

I have an iPad 2 and used old Apple ID for iBook app; now it wants to upgrade iBook but it is "stuck" on my old ID, yet I already created a new ID but it won't let me update the App.  I have everything backed up on my MacBook so if I delete iBooks on my iPad and retrieve the App under my new ID and then sync with my MacBook, will I still have all of the books, etc.?

Your purchases are tied to your Apple ID. If you bought all of the books with the old ID then AFAIK you will have to continue to use that ID in order to continue to sync those books to the iPad.
You have to update the app with the old ID so I don't see how you could keep the books with the new ID. Maybe I am wrong about this, but someone else will chime in I'm sure and correct me if I am wrong.
