Using a projector as a mirrored display

HI,
I'm trying to use an LCD projector to mirror my display and have connected using the VGA connector. The iBook seems to detect it but nothing is displayed on the projector apart from 'No RGB input detected'. I've tried following the instructions given in Help but I'm missing the 'Arrange displays' tab that it talks about and any search tells me that 'this option is missing as the computer does not support an extended desktop', or something along those lines.
I know the projector is OK because I was using it with a Powerbook yesterday but I only have access to an iBook at home and desperately need this to work.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Rhiannon

Does the projector itself have any manual settings that may need to be "set" when using particular types of input? Does it provide a USB option as well as an alternative, too, perhaps?
Have you clicked on "Detect Displays" in the System Preferences /Displays/ Display tab , after connecting the projector ? Does the iBook have the "screen spanning" hack from http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html installed on it? (might be worth trying if all else fails or removing, by zapping the PRAM, if it is already installed but causing problems)
Tried a different VGA cable for the projector?
Cheers
Rod

  • Using a tv as a mirror display

I have an 09 Imac , no thunderbolt display port , I,ve set up an HDMI cable to my new tv. I can mirror my desk top but I can't get the upper tool bar to show up how do I fix this .I also have black lines on the left and right sides of the tv can I strech the desk top some how ?

I can't get the upper tool bar to show up
Look for picture size settings in the TV, such as 100%, full-size, pixel-to-pixel.
If you can't fix it in the TV, look for Overscan or Underscan settings in the OS X Displays system preference.
I also have black lines on the left and right sides of the TV.  Can I strech the desk top some how?
You must have a 20" or 24" iMac.  They have a 16:10 display shape.  The TV is 16:9, wider than the iMac, so will show black bars at the side when mirroring.  You have to disable mirroring in Displays Arrangement tab to fill the screen.  In that tab you can drag the menu bar to the picture of the external display to make it the main display.

  • How do I set the default external monitor setting to NOT mirror displays?

Greetings folks. I take my Lion macbook all over the place, and frequently plug into projectors to present. I NEVER mirror my display, and always use the projector and on-screen displays as separate displays, yet when you plug in a new projector to the MacBook Air (or MBP) it always defaults to "Mirror Displays" in the arrangement tab. Is there a way to change that to NEVER default to mirror displays?

I've tried that, and then created my installer, but it defaults back to having auto update checked, or in the ON position. I want it to default to being OFF so any new installs or upgrades that I send out do not turn it back on.
We manage all computers here, and do not want users doing any updates.

Difficulty using a projector. I have a MBP 17" and am running 10.6.8. Often I need to make a Powerpoint or other presentation  at a client and I want to connect my computer to their projector. Either it won't display on the projector at all. Once it displayed but the presentation mode was on the big screen and the presentation I wanted to show was on my MBP screen. I have the adapter( white ones) to attached to the projector cables.  I am so frsutrated...it looks so silly not to have a computer work during a presentation..
Another problem one the rare occasion that it shows on the screen is that the presentation does show just my desk top.  Any ideas?
    Thanks !

You often have to turn off Mirroring to be able to set the second "screen"s resolution to something reasonable. When you do, the two screens become an "Exceeded Desktop" joined along one edge, and the Arrange pane in displays prefs can allow you to specify what edge. Initially, it will show a vacant extension of the built-in screen's desktop.
The mouse moves freely across that shared edge, and can allow you to drag the presentation window across to the the projector screen and re-size it to fit.

  • HT201300 What cable should be used to connect a macbook pro, 13 inch early 2011 model to an external projector so it will display the computer screen image through the projector?

What cable should be used to connect a macbook pro, 13 inch, early 2011 model to an external projector so the project displays the image on the computer screen?

You will need a cable or adapter with a minidisplay connection for the MBP.  That will be inserted in the Thunderbolt port.  The other end is dependent upon the connections of the projector which you have not listed.
    Ciao.

  • Display noise after using VGA projector

I taught two terms at the university using my MB Air 2012 with a VGA projector. Each time I connected the Mac to the projector and took it off, there was random noise on the display. I considered it as normal. Now the lessons are over and I don't use the projector any more. However, every time I turn on the Mac and when I shut it down, I see the same noise on the display. Otherwise, there are no problems.
Is there a way to get rid of that noise?

    About AirPlay and Airplay Mirroring
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). For non-qualifying Macs you can try using Air Parrot.

  • PB detects projector but not 20" Display

I'm having a strange problem when connecting my 15" PowerBook G4 Ti DVI to a new 20" Apple Cinema Display (ACD). When I first got the display, I was able to connect just fine for about 8 weeks. I went on a trip and since my return, the PB won't detect the display.
I took the PB to a Mac store and tried connecting to another 20" ACD... no luck. This lead me to believe that the PB display adapter was shot. However, I just tried to connect a Benq digital projector via VGA and the PB detects the projector without issue and works in both dual display and mirroring modes.
So far I have reset the PRAM, the NVRAM, and the PMU, but it didn't help.
I've also repaired permissions and repaired the disk (no errors found). Again, no luck.
Finally, I tried closing the lid on the PB and clicking the external mouse to see if I could force the PB to display to the external 20" ACD. The technique worked for the Benq projector, but failed for the ACD.
At this point, I'm not even sure how else to troubleshoot this issue, let alone fix it.
Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? Could it be a corrupted driver? Is there any way to reload Apple display drivers without having to do a fresh OS install?
    Your help is greatly appreciated!
15" PowerBook G4 Ti DVI   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   20" Apple Cinema Display

Hi, Wesley. Is it possible that your monitor's DVI cable has been damaged? You've verified that your DVI port is good, and also that your DVI->VGA adapter (and of course the projector's VGA cable) are good. If the DVI cable is detachable from the monitor, I'd try a different one and see whether the results are better.
I took the PB to a Mac store and tried connecting to another 20" ACD... no luck. This lead me to believe that the PB display adapter was shot.
When you tested with the display in the store, were you using your own display cable or the store's? Why did that test, which failed, suggest to you that your display adapter was bad? It wasn't in use when you connected a DVI display to a DVI Powerbook, was it? What did the store staff say when your Powerbook failed to detect their display?
You do have a warranty and free phone support for the display; I think I'd go ahead and contact AppleCare about the problem and see whether someone there can help you. I see you've also posted in the Displays forum here; that was a good idea too.

  • Change settings for external displays: no "mirror displays" mode

    Hello,
I'm using a 13" MBP with Snow Leopard. I'm using different displays and projectors in different locations. When you plug an external display in, the two displays are first in "mirror displays" mode. First thing I do is to switch this off.
Is there any way of changing the settings, so that an external display doesn't start in the synchronized mode??
    Thanks in advance.

only if you plug in this projector again. If you plug in a new projector (which I often do) it allways starts in "mirrored" mode.
I just found an app which - at least - makes the switching easier:

  • Menubar won't redraw with yosemite mirrored displays

Anyone know why my menubar won't redraw now that I've upgraded my MacPro (Early 2008) to Yosemite?  The 10.10.1 update didn't help either.  The menu bar will stay on System Preferences (and the rest of its menu titles) when you turn-on mirrored displays.  There are 2 stock dual-display cards for a total of 4: 2 LCDs and 2 projectors.  Turning mirroring off lets the menubar work correctly.  Turning it on, as if from the Display Menu, freezes the menubar of whatever app was active at the time.  The menus themselves work properly...you just have to guess what and where the real menu titles are...so it appears to be a purely cosmetic problem.  BTW, it is not using dark mode.

BTW, I have installed all updates (to 10.10.3) and this issue is still not resolved.

  • After upgrading to mountain lion I cannot use my HD TV as a display through my thunder port and HDMI cable ???

after upgrading to mountain lion I cannot use my HD TV as a display anymore using thunderport and HDMI , which worked before , does this mean I have to buy apple tv to mirror onto my HD TV

can it be something related to wi-fi?  I have read other posts talking about loss of connection using wifi.  I'm connecting my G5 through an airport express which is expanding my wifi generated from my Apple Time Capsule. It is quite difficult for me to relocate the server close to the Time Capsule and vice versa but if it works, at least that would be something.  It was working with Lion about 3 months ago - showing up in Finder, etc.
