Using a Second Display Screen

When you attach a second screen to your powerbook (in this case an HP 19 inch wide flatscreen), does this add an extra burden on the CPU? Suddenly, I find the CPU is maxed out and applications are stuttering.
I'm using GB3 which was always pretty intensive on my PB 1.67 Ghz but the extra screen seems to have pushed the CPU over the edge. Is there a way around this short of a MacBook pro ie. can I upgrade the graphics card?

gergrules --
can I upgrade the graphics card?
Unfortunately, no. The video controller in the PB is soldered to the logic board and cannot be upgraded beyond the pre-installed amount of SDRAM.

  • Using second iMac as a second display screen

I have two iMacs (long story :-), one new with thunderbolt port, another much older with mini display port. I would like to use one of them as a second display screen. Is that possible? BTW I can't seem to find thunderbot-t- mini cable either. Please help.

    Target display Mode FAQ's http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924
You can plug a Thunderbolt cable directly into your Mini DisplayPort. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20043524-263.html

  • Using a second display

I just purchased a 15" Powerbook and have attached a 23" Cinema Display. I have several questions:
Is it possible to turn off the second display without physically detaching it from the PB?
Is it possible to turn off the PB screen and just use the second display? (I know about getting a second keyboard and keeping the PB closed.)
When I have the two displays in "mirror" mode, I am not getting a full screen on the second display when i use the highest resolution on the second display. Is there a way to correct this and still maintain the highest resolution on the second display?
    Thank you very much.

    Hi cerett --
I have to preface my responses by saying I don't have a second display attached to my PowerBook. That said, I think I can answer the first two of your three questions. Here goes:
    • Is it possible to turn off the second display without physically detaching it from the PB?
I think your 23" ACD has a power button, right? If so, why can't you just power down the ACD if you want to turn it off without physically detaching it from the PB.
Alternatively, and this also goes to my answer to your second question, you could turn down the brightness to the point where the screen is totally dark. Now, this doesn't seem like an ideal solution by any means, because you'd still have power running to the ACD for no reason, but it would seem to accomplish what you want anyway.
    • Is it possible to turn off the PB screen and just use the second display? (I know about getting a second keyboard and keeping the PB closed.)
You write that you already know how to use your PowerBook with the display closed. See: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86286 So, it sounds like you would like to leave your PB open, but just not have the display on. If so, it seems to me you could just decrease the brightness (using the F1 key or, of course, System Preferences > Displays > Display) to the maximum extent possible so that they display goes totally dark. May not be an ideal option (see above analysis), but it would seem that it should work for you.
Sorry, but I can't help with your third question. I'm not sure, but you might increase your chances of getting the information you need, if you reposted that third question in the Apple Cinema Displays forum, here -- http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=981 -- as the answer to this question may have more to do with the characteristics of the ACD than of the PB. I'd wait to see if someone comes along here first, and, if not, then repost there.
    Good luck.

  • How to use the second display for installation OS in my vertical lines iMac

My 17" iMac display is full of vertical lines, it is unuseable. Does anyone know how to use the second display for Mac OS X or disable the first display for installation Mac OS x ?

Go to: *System Preferences > Displays* and select the Arrangement tab, then relocate your Menu bar by dragging it to the other display.
Unfortunately there is no Hardware or Software switch to turn off the iMac's Internal Display.

  • Using a Second Display while MBP display is in Fullscreen use

I recently began using a second display consistently (something I only did sparingly in the past), and I was hoping to find out how to utilize my second display while running a fullscreen application on the MBP display (when in fullscreen, the second display is taken into fullscreen, but only with a solid black), and continue using everything else normally if situated on the second display.

Did you have a specific app or application in mind?

  • Can Photoshop CS6 be used with Interactive Display Screens?

Our High School uses large interactive display screens (Sahara Clevertouch) in each classroom connected to a mix on Windows 7 & 8.1 laptops and desktops.
We have the same problem with all of them that only seems to happen in Photoshop:
If you use a mouse or the trackpad on a laptop, even when plugged into the Clevertouch, then everything works fine.
If you then try using the touch on the screen as an alternative to the mouse, it detects the movement, but turns into panning mode (little white hand) rather than whatever tool you where using.
Bizarrely if you start the touch off the side of the page and move onto the page it draws the line correctly: the problem only occurs if the line (etc) starts on the page.
Can anyone let me know the setting I need to change to get Photoshop to behave normally?
    Thanks
    Philip Evans

Unlikely, but feel free to try using compatibility modes and al lthe otehr usual tricks.

I'm trying to set up a dual monitor for my new iMac. I'm using a second display I used with my old G5. My iMac recognizes the second monitor but the monitor won't turn on. Power button doesn't do anything on the monitor itself.

If it won't turn on then the monitor is dead (power supply?, video circuits?).  Not worth repairing.
If you have a new iMac then it has thunderbolt.  So exactly what is that monitor you are trying to connect?  For TB you can connect a mini-displayport monitor.   Probably (not 100% sure with TB) can use dvi or vga too if you have the appropriate adapter.

  • Hi, I use BootCamp for my windows 7, I have a Macbook Pro 2012, and I want to use a second display, is this possible with my Mac using Windows?

I just dont see a port usable for a second screen. I want to hook it up to my TV to view photos and movies. What can I do?

What do you mean you don't see a port? Does your computer have a HDMI or a ThunderBolt/Mini Display port? You can use these to add a second display. Which one you use depends on what input ports your tv has.

  • Connecting HDTV to Macbook Pro to use as second display

I connected an HDTV to my macbook pro using hdmi cable. Is there a way to turn off Mirroring, it doesn't seem to be giving me the option in the system preferences. Do I need to connect it with VGA cable instead to get the "Non" mirroring option. I want to use it as a second display, not a mirroring display.

System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement > uncheck Mirror Displays

  • Mavericks OS10.9.1 prevents use of second touch screen on Mac Pro.

One screen works fine, but connecting a second is a dead loss. Touches on second screen are picked up by first screen, then the whole lot freezes and we have to restart. Tried two different touch drivers, but the same in both.
We think it is an Apple issue as others seem to be having different problems using dual screens. See this link from Display Link http://www.displaylink.com/support/ticket.php?id=354
Has anyone got around this problem? Our second screen is in the attic until Apple do a fix.

Okay i maust make a new case. further testing gives the result that Reason is not involved.

  • Using A second Display For FR

Hi all, wounder if anyone can help me. I have connected my iMac to a Sony Bravia 28" LCD TV, I mirror my mac screen to the TV, my mac screen apares on the TV in widescreen format ok. FR all works fine apart from one thing. Any video's, music video's etc that i have purchased from iTunes also my own personal video's only seem to play in standard and not wide screen format so I get a black border down both sides of what I am watching. Is there anyway of making my video's play in widescreen format through FR. Many thanks for any help you can give me, Best regards, Paul D.

    Paul,
Check your Display preferences when your connected to the Bravia. I think there are some options for settings when outputing to a TV.
I have a similar problem with connecting my Mac Mini to my TV, but in my case the black bars are less than a centimeter each side.

  • Using only the second display...

Is it possible to only use a second display connected to the dvi, while disabling the main display on the laptop?

Not true brother. Simply open back up the screen once you have established the connection with your external monitor and its native resolutions, and BINGO you can us the keyboard to type and the laptop screen will not turn on. In fact you can use all of the functiions of the laptop without the laptop screen truning on. Try it.

  • Using second display as main display

After installing mountain lion I can not figure out how to use my second display as the default, or what use to be #1 monitor. Meaning the second display would have the dock and toolbar on the top.

I haven't tried this myself on ML, but usually under older operating systems, you can in the Arrange mode in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Displays, just drag the white bar on the top of the representative rectangle of the one display to the other, and that adjusts which display is the primary.

  • How do I turn off the external display screen on my MBP even after I disconnect the second screen?

I connected my MBP to my television via the HDMI port to watch a movie. Whenever I have a second display connected I have different wallpapers for each screen. After the movie was over I disconnected the cable and started surfing the web, and I always have safari full screen so I have to three finger swipe to go back to my desktop. After disconnecting the hdmi cable, the external display screen became part of the three finger swipe in full screen mode. I can swipe to go from safari to second display screen (not connected to anything) and then to my desktop.
My question is how do I get rid of the dog-gone external display screen? I am getting tired of having to swipe more than once from full screen to my desktop.

Disregard this question, I figured it out. I just had to go in a delete the other desktops that showed up, how they got there in the first place, I'm not sure but I will visit the apple store to ask some questions.
Mods you can close and/or delete this whole convo.
