Using a second external HD along with Time Capsule

I've been using an external HD as a floating hardrive on my network for quite some time now (a little less than a year).  It's been working fine until just recently when I updated the Time Capsule's firmware.  Now the external is not available via Finder.  I've made sure all the physical connections are secure.  The external HD has it's own power source and I have been using a powered USB hub to connect it to the Time Capsule since I have a floating printer on my network, as well.  I just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or if anyone else has experienced any issues with the latest Time Capsule firmware.
Thanks for any help or assistance you can give.

The external drive must be formatted HFS+ .. in long hand that is Mac OS extended Journaled.
TM cannot use any other format.
The drive should also be GUID partitioned but that is not so vital... or AFP but that is very old.. stick with GUID.
Also called GPT.

how do you back up an external hard drive with time capsule?

Will time capsule back up the machine and the hard drive that is plugged into the machine?
Yes, if the hard drive with the video files is formatted correctly for Mac
On the Mac with the hard drive connected....click on the Time Machine "clock" icon at the top of the screen
    Click Time Machine Preferences
    Click Options
Here you will see a list of items that have been excluded from backups
Click the name of the hard drive to highlight it
Click the - (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the hard drive from the list of excluded items
The hard drive will now be backed up with your Mac on the next pass that Time Machine makes

Remember that Time Capsule is a hardware device.
Time Machine is a software feature of OS X 10.5.5.

  • Can I use apple TV on home network with time capsule or Airport Xtreme without being connected to the internet?

I'm wondering if I can use Apple TV to play movies and slide shows on my TV, play music over my sound system and print from my devices (Iphone 4S, iPad and MacBook pro 2011) by using an Airport Xtreme or Time Capsule (to back up the devices) if those devices are not connected to the internet. Can anyone advise pls? Reason for this is that I work on a moving ship and don't have an internet connection to speak of for much of the time (and if I do it's a wireless system that I need to pay by the minute and that is too slow to support the Apple TV), but would all the same like to create a wireless environment where my devices can interact with each other. I seem to get conficting info and a rep at the apple store in Honolulu told me that you cannot use Airport Xtreme or Time Capsule without an internet connection (it was busy, he may have misunderstood my question).
    Looking forward to your input.

Don't try to home share it.. as that is dependent on using Apple ID.
Just airplay to the ATV.. iTunes: Using AirPlay
The movie should play exactly as your doing music.. but get rid of the whole home share if that is causing issues.. there is no mention of needing home share in the above..
If you still have issues you might need to do it other ways.. like export the movie from itunes.. and play it using vlc which should allow you to stream it to the apple TV using airplay.
That is a bit tricky and I have not used that setup but it should work.
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/23412/can-i-stream-any-video-played-wit h-vlc-player-to-apple-tv
If you have a hunt around you should find it fairly easy to do.. but straight airplay should work.. there is a very recent update to ATV which might help it with airplay.

  • HT4260 Can an Airport Extreme be used to form a roaming network with Time Capsule?

I tried the on-line instructions  above to extend my Wi-Fi network with a roaming network but the graphics in the instrucions apparently show an earlier version of Airport Utility. Following the intent of the instructions, e.g., ethernet cable connection ports, etc., all I have achieved is a yellow flashing light on Airport Extreme. Airport Extreme has been reset to factory settings but it is not seen by the network.
Do I have it backward, for example, should the Airport Extreme be the base station and the TIme Capsule be the extended station?
What do you think I am doing wrong? Or, is this an impossible extension?
    Thanks, Chad

Suggest that you use the much more functional and useful AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion which was released at the same time as AirPort Utility 6.0.
Keep both 5.6 and 6.0 on your Mac and use the one that you want.
Post back if you need more assistance.

  • Using the Network Three Wifi Dongle with Time-capsule

Hi folks, i have just joined the forum today but have been an apple user for 2 years now. I do not use a router to get on the inter as I have recently purchased the 3 WiFi Dongle (mifi) and just wirelessly connect my ipad, iphone and macbook pro to it. My question is can I connect my macbook pro to my dongle and also to time-capsule wirelessly at the same time or is it only 1 device at a time?
Also is there a way I can connect my USB wifi Dongle to my time-capsule and just have everything connecting to my Time-capsule?
Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Dave

Welcome to the discussion area, harperdg33!
You might want to take a look a device this this USB Broadband Adapter to provide an ethernet signal to your Time Capsule, which in turn could act as the wireless router for your network.
The key element with any adapter like this is to verify that it supports your particular service, so you may need to do some checking about this.

  • Can I use one 2tb external hard drive for time capsule and file storage?

I would like to use time capsule, but also keep the hard drive on my desktop for file storage. Can I do this?

    Apple advises against doing that.
Any data stored on the disk that Time Machine is backing up to can not be backed up.
Plus the data outside of the Time Machine backup database cause problems when Time Machine starts cleaned up old backups to recover space for new backups.
For these reason it is advised that the Time Capsule disk be used for one or the other but not both.

  • Linksys WAG160N with Time Capsule ?

Does anyone out there use a Linksys WAG160N ADSL2+ modem, with Time Capsule connected to it wirelessly, or even hardwired? I'd love to compare settings 'cos I can't get things to work.
Also, if someone does have the Linksys WAG160N and has successfully updated firmware from a Mac, would like to hear from them. I'm trying to update the Linksys firmware from version 1.00.07 to 1.00.09, but process just doesn't want to complete.
    Cheers

First, WET11 only support WEP, no WPA!
To get TC to use WEP, you must run it as 802.11b/g only network. (You can enable it by opt-click the radio mode list box in the manual setup) And then WEP will appear under the security option.
I had one, and decided I don't want to run the Apple base station in b/g mode only, so I purchases an airport express in the end.

  • Can I use Extreme with Time Capsule to extend my gateway router and still use Capsule as "external HD"?

Bought Airport Extreme with Time Capsule version 7.7.2 with 2 Terabytes Feb 2014. It was probably an expensive mistake, but after searching for weeks for a external hard drive, it seemed reasonably priced to just use the capsule as my external hard drive for the price I paid. Spend an hour with Apple Care to get it working-had to use ethernet cord to my iMac OS 10.8.5 processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5. I did not "need" the airport as we have a Winstream SAGEMCOM modem/router (Sagemfast 1704) But, I was desperate and about to lose my old external hard drive with literally had 3 computers worth of information on it. It had already "died" once, but got it back, so once I got the airport/capsule and was told I just paid for an expensive HD, I had no time to take it back to get something else-I had to transfer my info right then. We (Apple Care) could not get it to work as a HD wirelessly. It may be because it was being set up for the first time; I don't know. I was hoping I would get a transcript of all done so I could do it myself if needed later on, but when I looked at my email-they didn't do that. (Don't know if that is normal, I was used to other "techs" sending the email.) So now I really want to try to move my airport and "extend" our wifi as it said on the "box" that you could do...
Our Windstream router had to be placed in the lower level at the bottom of our stairs. The stairway is "open" (no door going down the steps). I want to place the Extreme at the top of the stairs so that we can use some things in our offices or not have Netflix on our TV lose connectivity when we all are on our computers.
I know I need an ethernet cord to connect directly with the modem/router to the Airport Extreme.  I don't know what I will need to do after I connect it as it was so goofy when we set it up the first time (With the app it would disappear and not show up..) But my biggest concern is will I be able to still use the capsule as my hard drive and will I be able to do it wirelessly? (Even with it connected by ethernet, every day I have to re-connect to it before I can click on anything on the hard drive. It never shows up on it's own as my old HD did. That drives me nuts.) I do back up using the Time Capsule feature as well. I appreciate any help.

I am still willing to plug in the ethernet cord to the modem/router and try it IF I was able to get a step by step instructions..
Connecting the Time Capsule (TC) to the existing Winstream by Ethernet would be the basis for a roaming type network. This type of network allows you to basically "roam" with a wireless client and connect to either router. This, in essence, would provide you with an "extended" wireless network. The Apple routers can work with just about any manufacturers' routers in this fashion.
The keys to having a successful roaming network are as follows:
The routers must be interconnected by Ethernet.
Both routers will broadcast their own Wi-Fi network, but MUST use the same Network Name (or SSID), wireless security type (WPA or WPA2), and wireless password.
The TC MUST be reconfigured as a bridge.
Connect a single Ethernet cable between one of the Winstream's LAN ports and the WAN (circle of dots) port on the TC.
    The basic steps are:
    Power-down the Winstream.
Perform a "factory default" reset on the TC. Leave the TC powered-down after the reset has completed.
Connect the TC to the Winstream using an Ethernet cable.
Power-up the Winstream. Wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it to initialize.
Power-up the TC. Wait at least 5 minutes to allow it to initialize. (Note: Since we just reset the TC it will be performing as a wireless router that will be broadcasting an unsecured Wi-Fi network with a Network Name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN)
Connect your computer to the Winstream's Wi-Fi network.
Run the AirPort Utility. select the TC, and then, select Edit.
    Go to the Network tab.
Change the Router Mode option to: Off (Bridge Mode)
    Select the Wireless tab.
Verify that the Network Mode option is set to: Create a wireless network
For Wireless Network Name, enter the Wi-Fi network name used by the Winstream.
For Wireless Security, select the equivalent security type that is used by the Winstream. (Note: Use "WPA/WPA2 Personal" if the Winstream is using WPA/TKIP. Use "WPA2 Personal" is the Winstream is using WPA2/AES.
For Wireless Password, enter the same password used by the Winstream.
Select Update and allow the TC to restart.
As far as your external HD, yes you should still be able to use it as before.

  • Time Machine: Can I use a smaller external hard drive with larger internal?

Can I use a 250G external hard drive with and 500G unfilled internal drive with time machine? Or will time machine require I a 500G? I don't plan on filling the internal drive for a long time and don't want to buy a new external drive right now.

Yes, but you are very likely to get in trouble very quickly.
The problem is that TimeMachine saves multiple versions of any file modified, and if that file happens to be large, you can quickly fill up your TimeMachine drive such that it is throwing away older versions faster than you would desire.
Also if your boot drive's storage usage gets even close to the 250GB external drive's capacity, TimeMachine is likely to stop working.
If possible, I would suggest an external drive that is twice as large as your boot drive, or at least 1.5 times larger.
I guess you could repartition your boot drive so it is smaller than your external disk so you would be less likely to use more space than could fit on the external.
Personally, my opinion about backups is that much of my data is impossible to replace (family pictures, etc...), and spending money on backup hardware is a small price to pay for securing those memories. I also try to have it backup in more than one location in more than one way.

  • So you CAN or CANNOT use external drive with Time Capsule...

I was posting earlier and was told you CAN'T plug an external HDD into a Time Capsule and have it be recognized (some said you had to plug it into a USB hug first.)
    Then I find this  - http://www.brighthub.com/computing/mac-platform/articles/48709.aspx
Then before posting this I find others that say you CAN.  So what's the deal?  Can I or can I not plug in a USB  external HDD and have access to it?

The link that you posted is a bit out of date, but the information in the article is correct.
You can connect an external USB drive to a Time Capsule (or AirPort Extreme) if the following conditions are met:
The drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Most store bought drives are pre-formatted for Windows in a format called NTFS which will not work the Time Capsule. You have to use Disk Utility on your Mac to re-format the drive to work correctly with the Time Capsule.
Use a powered USB hub as the USB port on the Time Capsule is a bit under powered and it will not supply enough current for some drives. As a general rule....use a powered USB hub....even if the hard drive has its own power supply.
At times, I have had 3 drives from differerent manufactures all hooked up simultaneously into a powered USB hub which in turns connects to the USB port on the Time Capsule. No problems at all.
There are never any guarantees, but if you follow the guidelines, chances are good that your drive will work just fine.

  • How can i use a second external webcam on my MacBook Air 11

How can I use a second external webcam with my MacBook Air 11" 2011?
    Are there specific compatible webcams?
Can both cams be use at same time?
How would I choose which cam would be the active one, for example with FaceTime or Skype?

paolo@spring wrote: How can I use a second external webcam with my MacBook Air 11" 2011?...
Plug it in and launch the app you will use to run it.
paolo@spring wrote: ...Are there specific compatible webcams?...
Yes.  In general, any current USB model (will meet the "UVC" standard) can work on any Mac running Mac OS X 10.4.8 or newer.
    More specifically:
    (1) You have a choice of many Mac-compatible USB cam.  Some examples of current compatible cams are described at  http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/.
    (2) If you want a wireless cam, consider http://ecamm.com/mac/webcam/bt1/
    (3) OS X already has everything it needs for Mac-compatible cams.  I recommend that you not add any OS X software that comes with your chosen camera to your OS X Mac, at least until you have tested your new cam without adding anything.
paolo@spring wrote:... Can both cams be use at same time?...
Multiple cameras can be connected at one time, but asking your Mac to actually use (capture and process) more than one video stream at a time might cause processor and data bus capacity problems.  The normal method is to connect your cameras and switch between them as needed, actually using only one at a time.
paolo@spring wrote:... How would I choose which cam would be the active one, for example with FaceTime or Skype?...
The software you use to operate the cameras controls that.  For more info, start with the answer in this topic link.
