Using a SequenceImpl and getSequenceNumber gives me the ninth number

Question

I have a sequence that increments by one and i am using it in the create method of my entity like this:
SequenceImpl bpgseq =
new SequenceImpl("PRB_BST_SEQ", getDBTransaction());
setId(bpgseq.getSequenceNumber());
When I see the actual ids in the database they are all nine apart, and not one.
How come?

I put a System.out.println in the code and it seems that create is called ALOT!
This same page haa cascading select lists and apparently when the page is (partially) submitted by the master select list the create method is called again and again and everytime this happens theID is filled with a new nextvalue from the sequence. I tried putting if statements around it calling the getter and checking for null but no luck there either.
How to solve this?
