Using a shared networked  drive

We have been trying to use a NAS drive to store project files in a central location that can be accessed by all systems in a shared RAID environment. (This way all editors can read and write to the same volume, as opposed to the problems that happen with projects living on Read only drives and forcing you to create alternate versions. We are having 2 issues.
1) The modification date on the project file does not change. It does not change when it is accessed and saved in the application. So the only way to determine the modification date is to manually enter the info in the file name
(ex. Project_111408)
2) At times during the day, FInal Cut Pro will not be able to save to the NAS. The error code-File Error:File Unknown- appears. The only workaround is to save the file locally to the desktop and manually copy the file to the NAS at the Finder level. If one was to close the application and restart it, then it will work again...perhaps for a while until the next time.
So there is apparently some issues with writing to files on OS 10.4.11 that prevent it from updating the modification date, and in the case of Final Cut Pro, being unable to locate the NAS. Any ideas?..

There is another possibility here that I've been experimenting with. I've been using Dropbox to store and backup my project files. This is an automatic syncing service that can be used on multiple machines. I use shared folders for multiple machines. When a file is added or modified in your dropbox, it is automatically synced to the dropbox server, and also to any other machine that has access to it.
What prompted me to experiment with this was a question from a co-worker who asked if it was possible to automatically copy a modified file to a separate location for backup purposes. So far, this method has been working quite well. I've been working on some projects at home for the past couple of days, and was able to access all of my project files. In fact, yesterday I had a co-worker at work open a project file that I had just finished. After reconnecting the media to their Xsan, he was able to export my project for me.
The only problem I can foresee is that if a project file gets corrupted for some reason, that corruption is also automatically synced. Which is why it's also good practice to keep autosaves stored in another location. Hope this helps.

  • Can I use it for both a backup drive and shared network drive?

Is it possible to use the Time Capsule for both an automatic backup drive for my Mac AND use it as a shared network drive to store my large library of home videos?  If so, does it require partitioning the drive and are there instructions available?  Alternatively, if I store my home videos on its own network drive, will Time Capsule backup this drive too?  If I don't want any external drives tethered to my mac, how would set up the  2 drive scenario, so that home video drive can be shared on the network?
To be specific, I'm looking for a networked drive solution that allows me to do the following:
    1) automatically back up my Mac
    2) act as the primary storage drive for 750GB of the kids home videos (to save room on Mac) [Side question - ]
    3) have the ability to watch the home videos on both my family room Apple TV (is this even possible?) and my kitchen Mac Mini display (would my Mac's iMovie's library be able to include my home video content  that is stored on a network drive, or does it require the content to be  on the Mac hard drive?).
    4) If I use a two drive solution  (time capsule backup and cheaper second drive), I want to be able to have Time Capsule back up the home video content on the second drive.
    5) I do not want any drive tethered to my Mac, only wirelessly connected.  Would the second drive be connected to the Time Capsule?  How would this be set up?
    Many thanks!

basically yes, but i wouldn't recommend it.

the disk in the TC can't be partitioned in the traditional way. but you can use disk utility to create a "fixed-size" sparse disk image on the TC's disk for use with other data. use the instructions here, just leave out the encryption part.
Alternatively, if I store my home videos on its own network drive, will Time Capsule backup this drive too?
    no.
time machine can not back up from network drives.

consider a NAS that is time machine compatible.
    3) have the ability to watch the home videos on both my family room Apple TV (is this even possible?) and my kitchen Mac Mini display (would my Mac's iMovie's library be able to include my home video content  that is stored on a network drive, or does it require the content to be  on the Mac hard drive?).
it's possible to stream content stored on a TC (or NAS) to TV. using home sharing, your mini would be able to access files in homeshared libraries.
it doesn't matter where the files are stored as long as iTunes knows they are there. in other words, the content needs to be in an iTunes/TV friednly format and in your iTunes library - that doesn't mean the content can't be stored on an external HD, a TC, or a NAS.
    4) If I use a two drive solution  (time capsule backup and cheaper second drive), I want to be able to have Time Capsule back up the home video content on the second drive.
What can Time Machine back up, and where can it put it’s backups?

IMO, your best course of action is to get a NAS. if you're interested, i can highly recommend this device by Synology.
Synology NASes play very well with Macs and have excellent backup features on board. given enough space (i have 4x2 TB drives installed) you can store your media files there, use time machine to backup your Macs to it and can use the on-board backup solution to back up the whole shebang to a USB drive connected to the NAS.

  • Map shared network drive from a Win XP pro machine to use with Time Machine

I have an external USB hard drive connected to a Windows XP Pro computer. The drive has two partitions that I created on my mac. One is a formated for Time Machine and one formated in fat for windows.
When connected by USB to the mac I can access both partitions and Time Machine works great. When connected to the XP I can only see and access the fat partition but Time Machine does not see it.
My goal is to have the external drive connect by USB to the XP machine (because it is always on and connected) and use the external drive to backup the pc by USB and the Mac with time machine over my wireless.
Can I do this and where am I going wrong?

Tech support advised me that this will not work. Time Machine can not backup to an shared network drive unless unless it is connected to Time Capsule. No doubt this is a marketing strategy and not a design flaw.

  • How do I get the second HD to be a shared network drive??

PowerPC G5 / dual 2Ghz - used as our file server.
    running OS X Server - v.10.3.9
Have one internal HD - 160GB partitioned into two drives (General Access & Archive) in the Public folder of this computer
Appears as Network: Local / G5 Server. When you click the connect button you get a choice of which volume to mount/connect to (ie. General Access; Archive or both)
Running out of space on the drive so I purchased a second 160GB HD. Installed it, formatted it (with DiskUtility), named it, and copied all files from Archive (partition)
The thought is to make this new 160GB drive Archive and to remove the partition from the original 160GB HD and have that be just General Access.
How do I get the second HD to be a shared network drive??
Also can I remove the partition to the first without having to clone it and reformat?

    Roam & Ali B,
    Thanks!!
    Next dumb question(s).
We have a laCie FW external HD that I was using as a back-up drive (temporarily)
I do have some files on it that I have to bring back onto the server to use. I get a admin user&passsword prompt every time I have to copy something back. It usually copies over a locked file that can only be deleted from the Server terminal.
    1. Why isn't this working without the admin prompt? I used DiskUtil to format it before I could use it.
    2. How exactly do I "clone" the current content - its not a simple 'Select All' and drag&drop? Is it going to bring over the partition as well??
    3. Once I have everything on the FW HD, re-boot using it as the System, and re-format the original 160GB HD - will I run into #1.

    Dear All,
As stated, i would like to create shared network drive within my office to my department to share file and document. I would also like to have that network drive to be enforce by password protection. I would like this solution be native to Microsoft

    Hi,
If you're in a domain, then as S Guna siad, you should guarantee appropriate permissions to users.
If you're not in a domain, then you can use "Password protected sharing", but this setting doesn't have effect on computers in a homegroup
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings, All networks, turn on "Password protected sharing"

  • Creating a folder alias on a shared network drive

    Hi,
I have a folder that is housed on my computer that I would like an alias of on my company's shared network drive. I will have access to the shared network drive from my home computer either through Citrix or a VPN, so I would like the alias on that drive so that it will reflect any changes I make to the files within either from my work or from my home computer. My question therefore is, how do I create an alias of a folder on a shared network drive? I tried creating an alias on my local drive and then dragging it to the shared network drive, but that just copied the folder and removed the alias.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Nevermind. I must have copied over the original folder the first time instead of the alias, as a simple drag and drop of an alias folder just worked fine for me.

  • Why does my laptop no longer connect to our WPA2 shared network drive?

Our Airport Express is set up to give us access to the internet plus access to a shared network drive via a WPA2 key. Suddenly, I can no longer access the shared network drive, even though my wireless internet access is fine, and the Airport Utility is "recognizing" my computer. I am the only PC user in a house of unsympathetic Mac users who are not having any similar problems! Can anyone tell me what I should do to fix this?
    Thanks very much.

I don't remember where I found this, but it did work for me.

  • Use a shared hard drive for Time Machine

    Hi all,
I will be buying a Macbook Pro soon, and I know that I will be using the Time Machine feature a lot. I have a wireless network at home, so I would like to know if I can use an external hard drive, hook it to my PC then share it on the network, and use that to backup data on the MacBook using time machine.

You can't. A Time Machine drive needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and Windows can't use that format natively. It also needs to be directly connected to a computer running Mac OS X 10.5 or newer or the USB port on an 802.11n AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule, or be the Time Capsule's internal drive.

  • Error code 6600 when trying to access shared network drive

    Hi everybody
When trying to "enter" a shared NAS network drive, which appears on my Macbook, I just get error code -6600. What is wrong, do you know what I can do to resolve this???
I have previously managed to do this operation but now it just does not work. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

After some research I found the following tip to be working:

So I changed my IPv4 as well as IPv6 DNS-Servers under Windows Network Preferences and everything worked again.

  • Using a mapped network drive

I have mapped a network drive (q:) to a library in (hosted) SharePoint 2013. I have full permissions.
I pasted a pdf file into the local q: drive but it doesn't appear in the library in SharePoint.
I know there are alternative ways of doing this (different ways to map a drive - where a drive letter is not assigned) or using SkyDrive, but ultimately I want to use a program that requires to access data in Access tables using a path that includes a drive
    letter.
Can anyone explain why it seems that changes written to the local mapped drive are not being updated in the library that it is mapped to.
    Thanks.

    HI,
Do you have any columns that require metadata values?
This works for libraries without required medatada
    example:
    Net Use Z: Delete
    Net Use Z: http://MyWebApp/Documents
    robocopy C:\MyFolder Z: /COPY:DAT /Z /XA:H /XO /NP /W:5 /LOG+:C:\logs\SPDaily.log
The example copies files from C to
    http://MyWEebApp/Documents
But if I run the script as another user and there are required metadata values then the file will be copied and the file will not have a checked in version. you can go to the library setting and click on
Manage files which have no checked in version

    Hey,
I want to pick up a Mac mini but I just want to spend about 600 on the regular one without the DVD burner. I will be using this mostly to learn Mac for my certifications.
Anyways, can the Mac find my shared DVD drive located on my Windows Vista Desktop machine and burn to it from iDVD and other programs? Or is that a Macbook Air only feature? Am I stuck with the regular drive or has the almighty Apple blessed their holier than thou of an OS with a basic feature as drive sharing?

i believe its only a feature on the air...... unless u can download somewhere that remote disc sharing ****

  • How to use EXPDP to create the dumpfile in shared network drive.

    Hi,
I have Oracle 11g ( 11.2.0.3 ) DB server in SUSE Linux machine.
I want to export a schema of 300 GB size using EXPDP utility. Thing is I dont have enough space to hold the EXPDP dumpfile in the same server.
Hence I would like to know is there any way where I can create the dumpfile on to some other mapped drive from the Linux server.
This is quite urgent, please some one help me.

    Hi Suresh,
It it's windows you want to map to linux take a look at samba to do that:
    http://www.linux-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/1404-how-to-mount-a-windows-share-with-smbmount/
I've not actually exported directly to a samba mount but i assume it will work......
the other alternative (if you have an 11.2.0.3 db on the windows server also) is to use this approach
