Using a shared printer

Hi, I just got a new Intel iMac and I have been having problems printing from it. I have an iMac G3 that I use to store music and do backups using retrospect. There is a HP Photosmart 8200 series printer that is attached to the G3. I have set the G3 up to allow printer sharing and have doubled checked every thing. I then went on the Intel and set the printer up in system preferences. Checked all of that too. However, when I go to print from any application (safari, appleworks, pages, textedit, mail, etc.) the app freezes and quits. I have tried every thing I can think of. Any other ideas? Thanks

Thanks for the note. BIG HELP! I just finished downloading and installing the new drivers from HP. (All 130MB of it) Every thing seems to be working fine, however, when I choose print File>Print the app seems to hang for about 15-20 seconds before opening the print dialog. (This is only happening on the Intel. The drivers are universal). That just does not seem normal to me?!?! Thanks for any input.

  • Problem using a shared printer Canon PIXMA MG5140

    Hi
I have a Canon PIXMA MG5140 Multifunction Printer Which is shared on my XP machine.
I have installed the drivers on my XP and my MBP also Printer is working fine when it's connected to each one of these machines via USB.
I have also added my printer on my Mac as a shared printer, but when I try to print something on my shared printer it's staying there with the status Printing on my mac and on the other side on my XP machine the job is added to my printer with the status spooling and it's not going to do anything, even waiting for 20 minutes doesn't help, it's not printing.
I have another printer shared on my XP machine and it's working fine with my MBP.
I also have another XP client which can work with both of my printers on my XP machine so I think there is something wrong on the mac side.
    Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
When you have the printer shared by Windows you cannot use the driver supplied by Canon. Instead you need to look at an alternate driver, such as those offered by [Gutenprint|http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php] or [PrintFab|http://www.printfab.net>.
Gutenprint is preferred because it is free while PrintFab costs €49. However the MG series is not yet listed as a supported model of printer with the latest version of Gutenprint so you may be forced to look at using PrintFab, which does list the MG series as a supported printer - although they don't list an 5140 but have the 5120 and 5150.
With PrintFab installed you can then add the printer via the Windows browser of Add Printer. And then for the Print Using menu you can select the MG PrintFab driver.

  • Printing dark when using shared printer

I am having problems getting Lightroom 2 to print correctly when printing to a shared Epson 4000.
When printing to the 4000 as a local printer everything works as it should. But when I try to print to the same printer, with the same settings as a shared printer in a small network the prints turn out too dark and with colour casts.
Using epson profiles and pointing lightroom to the correct profile. Setting printer driver correctly (when i print the from photoshop CS2 it prints correctly, even when using a shared printer).
Epson 4000 using the latest 3.09 driver. OSX 10.4.10 on imac G5.
Any help appriciated, strange that everything works great on a local printer but not on the same printer when shared over the network (printersharing in OSX)
Am certain I have profile selection and printer driver settings correct ( after all it works from photoshop and locally).

    Dear Larry,
Thanks for reporting the problem. You mentioned that page content is getting shifted by around 3/8 inches when printed using Mac Airprint using Acrobat which resulted in clipping of some of the content and other applications print fine.
Could you please pass on the same pdf to me as well? Although, it doesnot look dependent on any particular pdf but I would like to analyze certain behavior with the pdf you are using.

  • "rastertoescpII failed" when trying to use a shared windows printer

I have a 2010 MBP running Snow Leopard and I am trying to use my mother's Epson C88 printer that is shared from a Windows computer running Windows XP. Everything is fine (my computer picks up the printer) except with drivers... when I use the "Epson C88 Series" drivers I get an error that says "rastertoescpII failed." If I use the Gutenprint drivers, the printer prints out 10,000 pages of gibberish. I read the archived articles on here about the ways that people solved it but none of those solutions are working for me (probably since I am using a shared printer on my network not a printer connected to my computer). Any ideas on how I can fix this?

I have an EPSON Stylus CX3900 Multifunctional. With the drivers provided by Apple or Epson, I got the same message. I checked the gutenprint drivers and found out my printer wasn't even listed (Latin American model or something like that). Anyway, I installed the printer (samba) using the CX3810 driver and it's working perfectly now. A bit slow but I can live with it.
A question: Am I supposed to be able to use the scanner from a multifunctional printer (hooked to a PC network) from my mac? That is, if the Epson or Apple drivers did their jobs correctly??

  • Printing from Windows 8 to a shared printer on a Windows 7 machine

WE have a a user that has a laser printer on A windows 7 machine that others in the office can access EXCEPT the one person on a Windows 8 machine. We have tried everything, but cannot get her to print to this printer. Says it cannot be found. What does
Windows 8 need to see a printer on a Win 7 workstation. She does have access to network printers and her own.
    Thanks.

We have the same kind of problem but a bit different.
Dell Printer (used for years shared on a network) was moved to our Windows 7 machine plugged in via USB.  We only use a plain workgroup with no Domain as we also have Macs on the network.
I have Macs using shared printer, a Windows XP using the shared printer, and even Windows 7 under Parallels on the Macs using the shared printer no problem.
I had the lone Windows 8 laptop using the shared printer but then it just stopped working.  So I deleted it and now when I try to add it is want credentials and none work.  It will not connect to the shared printer on the Windows 7 machine.
I have Windows 7 (which also has a couple shared drives that do work) set for No Homegroup and No Password for sharing - pretty much open as we are behind a Cisco Firewall to the outside.  No firewalls on the pcs.
Not sure where to go from here...

  • Problem using File sharing  in a small office network

I have a problem using File sharing on an Imac and Macbook Pro.
My office has a small network running Windows Small office file server 2003. I have one Windows 2000 PC connected to it and 3 Macs, an 2.4 gHz Intel iMac running Leopard 10.5.6 , a MBP running the same and a Mac Mini running 10.5.
From the Finder Shared window of the Mac Mini, I can see all the computers on the network. It also used to be the case for the iMac, but the MBP could never see the Windows PC’s, not the server or the Win2000. This wasn’t a big problem as I was communicating between the Macs and using the shared printer on the iMac.
On Monday Jan 19 the iMac was suddenly unavailable to the other 2 Macs. It was working normally on the Friday. The iMac can access the Mac Mini and copy files to it. The Mac Mini can see the iMac but cannot access it. Even trying to connect as, ends in a failed connection. I have tried rebooting, turning File sharing off and then on again to no avail.
The iMac now also cannot see the Windows PC’s which it previously could.
To get files from the MBP for printing, I now copy it to the Mac Mini and acces the folder from the iMac, a very tedious procedure. I don’t know why this happened and am scared that the Mac Mini is going to do the same thing.
All three computers are also running VMware 2.0 with Windows XP pro, and from VMware the server is visible on all the computers.
Any help will be much appreciated, I live in a small town in South Africa and the local computer suppliers have no knowledge of the Macs.
I think that the problem with the iMac may have started after a software upgrade to 10.5.6 but I am not entirely sure.
    Thank you
    ajdk

Well, you're current method sounds pretty good. But if you want to user a file server, hey go ahead.
What you want to do when you centralize project files is to keep track of which one is the newest and becareful not to overwrite files with the same name. So you either have to set up individual spaces on the server (separate AFP/FTP folders maybe), or you'll need to run a file checkout service.
The individual space is cheaper, but it's not much of a difference from backing up to the network drive. Since you have Gigabit connections, you might even opt to save ALL the user files on the server instead of just the project files.
If you want to run a file checkout service, there's two approaches. You can run a service that can host any kind of file, or you can run a version control system for each kind of application (Photoshop, Word, etc.). Please notice, that as you read further and further along, the methods become more and more expensive and complicated. Once you get to this point, it will be necessary to purchase or build software in addition to the Mac OS X Server package.

  • Printing from JBOSS (on a windows server as system account) on a mapped (shared) printer (installed as administrator)

    Hi,
I have JBOSS running on a Windows Server. Our applications on JBOSS use network printers which are installed on the server for printing purposes. This works fine so far, except for one case for which I ask you for support:
If I map a printer, which is (only) conneted via USB with a PC and shared in the network, the printer is available on the server with JBOSS and can be mapped, BUT JBOSS is not able to see this particular printer and print on it, while the other installed
network printers are available and functional via JBOSS.
My researchs have led to the conclusion, that JBOSS doesn't see this printer, as JBOSS is running unter the SYSTEM account, while the printer was installed with an administrator account. Strangely network printers don't cause this issue.
If I start JBOSS with an administrator account, it can see and use the shared printer. But unfortunately this is not an option, as it causes other issues with our applications.
So the question is: Is there a way to make the printer visible for the SYSTEM account? Or any other suggestions?
Many thanks in advance and best regards,
    Amir

simple solution is to install your printers locally rather than connecting to a network resource, locally installed printers have the advantage of being
visible to every user on your system including system accounts. To install a printer locally rather than connecting to a network printer start the "Add Printer Wizard" and select "Local printer attached to this computer"

  • Printing from your iPad1 to a shared printer

  • Setting up a HP 4350 laser as a shared printer on a network

I have a HP 4350 printer installed on a server which is a shared printer.
I want everyone who uses the shared printer to only have the option of using a private job in stored printing.. I want all other options with stored job tab to be greyed out. I would prefer that the pin be left as default "0000".

  • Where is Bonjour! or shared printer???

    Hi everyone,
I decided to use my old iMac G4's upgraded hard drive to use as extra space for me and my girlfriend. I also decided to connect my old Samsung ML-1210 printer to the iMac G4 and use the "shared printer" option with my girlfriend's MacBook and my newer iMac.
Now the problem: the MacBook (running 10.4) sees the shared printer (I go to File: Print, then select in the list "Shared Printer" then ML-1210) and prints to it. It works well. However, the iMac, with 10.5, cannot see the shared printer. I went to the "Add printer…" box, and then clicked on the + button. The new window that appears has different options: Default, Fax, IP, Windows, Bluetooth, AppleTalk and More Printer. Nothing about a shared printer or "Bonjour!". Using Apple's help menu, it says I should go to that window and see all the options I've mentionned above, plus Bonjour!, which is not there. I even tried to customize the menu bar to see if the Bonjour button was just removed, it wasn't...
I tried using "IP" to connect to my old iMac but it does not work. How come something that works so well and is so simple on 10.4 doesn't work on 10.5? Usually Microsoft steals its ideas from Apple, not the contrary; it should just work...
    Any ideas?

  • Macbook on longer connects with shared printer

Whenever I try to print from my Macbook using a shared printer I see this error message :
    can't open `/private/var/spool/cups/tmp/50d23352019a8'.
The shared printer is attached to a PowerMac G5. The G5 printer sharing is on, and the correct printer is selected.
    This problem just recently started.
In the Macbook's Systems Prefs Print&Fax pane it shows the G5 shared printer by name and its location.
I believe something is wrong with my Sharing Pane in my Macbook's System Prefs.
This pane shows the printer's name and the G5's location, the Printer sharing box is checked and the Printer Sharing green light button is on
However the two rectangular boxes marked Printer and Users are both empty, and the + - signs are both grayed out.
They used to contain the printers name in the Printer box and everybody in the users box.
Any suggestions as to how to fix this?  Do I need to make a change in CUPS?
    Thanks,
    Walter
PowerMac G5 running OSX 10.5.8 with Epson Stylus C120 printer attached by USB cable.
    Macbook Running OSX 10.6.8

    Try Add a Printer.
In System Preferences / Print and Fax, the padlock has to be unlocked to get access to + and -.
Remove the old printer name etc. (the - sign), then click on the + sign to add the same one back again.

  • Sharing printer with PC

    OK, I'm stuck.
I have one Mac and three PCs(two laptops and one desktop), and I am trying to use the Mac to share a printer. I am doing this because the Mac does not restarted.
I have a workgroup setup and I can somewhat share files. I have no success sharing the printer. Any help would be great! I would like to just start from scratch, so PLEASE HELP!!!!

Most common issue - Mac print queues expect postscript input - even from PCs using the shared printer. So, use a postscript driver on the PC (Apple Color LaserWriter x/600 is good), so you will be sending postscript to the Mac.

  • Problems printing Acrobat documents on shared printer

I have a MacBook Pro and a Mac Pro. I also have an Epson 1400 printer.
When I print any Acrobat document using the printer hooked up directly to my MacBook, it prints perfectly.
When I print the same Acrobat document using the printer hooked up directly to the Mac Pro, it prints perfectly.
However, when I hook the printer to the Mac Pro and enable printer sharing, and then print the same document from the MacBook Pro using the shared printer via the network, the Acrobat document is reduced in size by around 50%. I have checked every possible setting and just can't find why this is happening.
Thanks in advance for any help!

The problem occurs not only through Acrobat. The prints have the correct size through the Mac only when the printer is directly connected via USB on the Macs but reduced size through the network. The problem occurs in any printer model on the network.
I do not know how to solve this problem but curiously does not occur with Windows computers with Bonjour that prints to the printers connected to Macs.
    When Apple will fix this?

  • Windows Shared Printer works on two of three Macs

I have a Windows Home Premium PC with an HP C5280 shared.
I have a MacBook Pro, a iMac purchased within the last year, both running SN and an older iMac 1.25 G4 running Leopard.
I'm trying to get the IMac 1.25 G4 to use the shared printer but I have not been successful.
My first question is - Do I have to install the HP C5280 software on the iMac. I don't recall if I had to do this on the other machines (getting old and memory is questionable these days!!)
FYI - I have followed the instructions found to "manually install" and have tried other ways, but still no success.
    Help would be appreciated.
    Regards, - JP

I neglected to supply the error message.
"There is a problem communicating with the printer. Make sure the printer is powered on and connected to the computer. Delete or stop the job and try again."
All of these conditions I have checked.
Also, when I select the Printer from the Print & Fax displayand then click on the "Utility" icon, I receive an error for a Lexmark printer. Never had one connected to this machine. Is this expected?

  • Image Shifts When Using Shared Printer

    OS 10.6.8
    Acrobat Pro 9.5.1
    Printer: Canon Pixma 4800 ip4800
As far as I know, all drivers are up to date.
Printer is connected to an iMac and is set to allow sharing.
When printing a .pdf from another Mac (wirelessly via AirPort), the image is shifted slightly (approx 3/8") to the right and down on the printed sheet, cropping content.
All other remote printing is OK (including from other Adobe CS5 applications). I can also remote print the .pdf correctly using Apple's Preview application. Printing is also OK if printed from the iMac that the printer is connected to. Only time there is an issue is: Shared printing a .pdf using Acrobat.
