Using a 'sharing only' account

I have created a 'sharing only' account on my mac book but when I log in remotely I cannot write files or create folders in the shared folders even though the sharing only account has read/write rights. Any suggestions would be welcomed

Hello thyGmail
You can change the permissions by going the folder or files and go to the drop down menu File > Get Info. From there, just change the permission located towards the bottom of the information window. The article below will give more detailed steps if you get lost.

  • HT1549 permission problem when using a sharing only account

    I'm using Mavericks 10.9.1
After setup a sharing only account, when using the account login and copy files to a remote shared folder, the remote shared folder's owner do not have permission to read it. only the sharing account has permission.
    what's wrong?
I need them have permission to read and write too.
anyone know how to fix it?
    Thanks

Try using Get Info (command - I) to set the permissions in  to read/write for 'everyone'.

  • Sharing Only Accounts don't show in Users & Groups

    Hi,
I've done a fresh install of Maverick yesterday.
And I created a "Sharing Only" account so I can access my iMac from another PC (so it doesn't show up at logon time)
When I went back in Users and Groups this morning, my newly "Sharing Only" account had gone.
So I thought I'd forgotten it and tried to create it again: to my surprise at creation time, Mac OS reports: "Name is used by another user", when in fact it's not listed in the left sidebar (I can only see my accout and the guest account)
I tried the same with a "Standard user" and all is fine.
I tried with a second "Sharing Only" account and it disappeared too (after a logoff)
I've found this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4404 but I don't wanna screw up my fresh install
    Can anyone help?

here also the same ... totally fresh out of the box Mac Mini with update to 10.9.2 ... create a share only user called "conf_share", add this user to a existing share ... go back to the User & Groups and paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh it's disappear (but still existing of course)
I found this "hint" but this is only usefull if you want to delete this user without going crazy... this hint will convert the sharing only user to a standard user
Just type the following two commands in terminal:
Quit and reopen System preferences and the sharing account will show up:
    sudo dscl . create /Users/root GeneratedUID FFFFEEEE-DDDD-CCCC-BBBB-AAAA00000000
    and then:
    sudo dscl . create /Users/accountname UserShell /bin/bash
Replace "accountname" in the commands above with the missing account name.

  • SMB Sharing with Sharing Only Account

Is there any way to activate SMB sharing with a Sharing Only account? I've created a Sharing Only account but when I go into the Sharing prefs pane under SMB it only lists normal accounts, not the Sharing Only accounts.

I'm having a similar problem...only with FTP. I created several "Sharing Only" accounts and none of them are able to connect via FTP. I'm able to connect via FTP as a user with a standard account though.

Error reads "User xxxxxxx may not use FTP" when I try to connect via Transmit.

  • Builtin FTP, sharing only account, refuses connection.

Im trying to setup FTP sharing since the builtin afp is painfully slow.
The ftp setup works fine, allows normal users to connect and view/download content, but the sharing only accounts are refused, saying the user is not allowed to connect via FTP...??
Ive used a group called FTP and added 2 users, one sharing only, and one normal user.
The normal user works fine, but can navigate the whole file system, including system files, other harddrives and non-shared folders.
This is NOT ok, so i will have to use sharing only-account but first i have to get it to work...
Ive tryed connecting both tru finders connect to server and Transmit (ftp app).
Finder reports error -36 or unknown user, transmit reports "user shared may not use ftp".
everything else works fine but something is terribly wrong..
can anyone PLEASE help me troubleshoot?
both client and server-side are 10.5.1 client.
    Client: macbook c2d 2ghz 1gb ram
    server: quicksilver 867mhz 768mb ram

Thank you guys for some VERY enlightening answers
I think i got the hang of it
But that must mean that if i can create a shell with only the allowed acccess that i provide, i can prehaps make it auto-mount shared folders aswell?
Or is there prehaps a already builtin "profile" i can use just by selecting it in the shell-links?
if there would be an easy way of creating this, i would definitely think other users could benifit from this aswell
Since this is basicly a unix-fix, there must be similar needs, and prehaps complete solutions that would only need minor work to convert to mac-os?
The ftp-privs appears to need SEVERE work to work properly, since normal user has access to EVERYTHING on the server-machine and not only the sharepoints i see as a HUGE problem and MUST be solved ASAP!
I would imagine that the macosx builtin control isnt that specific so prehaps a ftp-share shell even could be more secure and easier maintained?
    So my question is two parts;
1: Is there the easy way out, ready made apps that can do this?
2: if not (or good alternatives) where could i search for other os solution?
I have no problems with adding more logins to the computer, but i would preferably not show them all at login (add other..-button or similar to loginscreen or not visible at all) since its my girlfriends work-computer (my harddrive-stash for my puny 80gb laptop, family and friends) i really need a fast but secure file-sharing..

  • Ftp sharing / "sharing only" account

It seems that you can't log in Leopard's ftp with a "sharing only" account. Can someone confirm this? And/or point me to detailed information on that?

  • Sharing Only accounts disappear from Account Preference pane

I am trying to setup a 'sharing only' user for the purpose of having a user that can access files via ftp and only have read access to certain folders I specify (and it's subfolders). After I have set up a sharing only user and I come back into the Account Preference pane at a later time, that user is no longer listed in the left-hand column. Can anyone shed some light on why this is happening and provide steps to prevent it from doing so in the future?
    Many thanks!

I'm having a similar problem. In my case, I upgraded from an old computer running Mac OS 10.4.11 to a new one running 10.6.4. The old one had share only accounts set up (by SharePoint), and Migration Assistant transferred them over.
All but one showed up in the Account preference pane. I decided to delete the others but that other account still shows up in the Log In window.
It sounds like the same underlying problem. Any ideas to help us both out?

  • Can MobileMe email-only accounts access iCloud?

So I have a MBP running Lion with a MobileMe account and my wife has an email-only address under that MobleMe account. We also sync Address Books, all accessed thru her old MB Core Duo running Snow Leopard, not upgradeable to Lion. If I switch to iCloud will she still be able to access Mail and sync Address Book? Can't find a definitive answer anywhere in the Apple iCloud support pages.... Help please!

I couldn't either. With help from others and a MacWorld article finally got it figured out: You DO want to have two iCloud accounts, but you want one iCloud account to be the source for the Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, iTunes, and PhotoStream on both machines. There is a solution.
The issue: MobileMe account including its own email account, with the user also paying $10 for a second email-only account. The MobileMe account is used for joint Contacts, Calendar, and Safari Bookmarks on two machines, while the main MobileMe mail account was used for mail on one machine and the email-only account was used for mail on the other machine.
We wanted to upgrade to iCloud on both machines and still have joint Contacts, Calendar and Safari bookmarks, plus share our iTunes account and use the new PhotoStream feature on both machines - but preserve the two individual email accounts.
Solution: On the first machine, move to iCloud with everything, using the main MobileMe account name and password. On the second machine, USE THE EMAIL-ONLY ACCOUNT to create a new iCloud account using the username and password for the email only account. That appears to be the critical step: you need to create that new iCloud account with the username and password for the email only account FIRST rather than migrating to iCloud on the second machine using the main MobileMe account name, or else you may permanently lose that second email-only account!
After that, it's all a matter of tweaking the account settings on the other apps to direct to the iCloud account on the first machine.
You will get a screen asking if you want to delete the existing Contacts on that second machine. Do so: DELETE THE EXISTING CONTACTS on that second machine. (Only after backing up your Address Book by using the export function just to be safe.)
Then, WITHIN EACH APPLICATION - Address Book, iTunes, Calendar, Safari - go to the Preferences and set them so that they are tied to the iCloud account for the first machine.
You may need to check your Preferences: for a little while my wife was getting both my mail and hers, until I noticed that within Mail.app she had two accounts: her iCloud account AND my iCloud account. I deleted my account on her machine.

  • MobileMe "email only account" on iCloud?

OK, I've converted my MobileMe account on my laptop and iPhone to iCloud. Am already enjoying the PhotoStream feature! My question: We have an iMac running Lion at home, and my wife uses it as her primary computer. Under MobileMe we've had an "email only account" we're paying extra for. We want to keep her separate email account on the iMac and eventually be able to sync it through iCloud with her iPad when she gets one for Christmas, BUT we want everything else on the iMac - photos, Contacts, Calendars, etc. - to sync with MY iCloud account. How do we accomplish this?
Until we can figure this out, we're leaving the iMac alone and not converting it to iCloud. Thanks in advance for any answers!

Thanks, that was a helpful response! I think we did pretty much the same thing you suggested.

  • Which mobileme account do I upgrade to iCloud first? Master or email only account.

Hi. I have two mobileme accounts that have not been upgraded to iCloud yet.
The first is the master account that I use and the second is an email only account that my father uses which is attached to my master account.
I would like to upgrade both to iCloud but I have received conflicting advice from a couple of Apple stores I have sought advice from. (A couple of Apple employees said do the master account first, the other two said to do the email only first!).
Does it matter in which order I upgrade these accounts to iCloud? ie. should or upgrade the Master account first or the email only account?
    Or doesn't it matter !!!
Thanks in advance for your help.

The OP is asking about upgrading MobileMe, rather than the setting up of iCloud. Though it shouldn't make any difference, I would advise carrying out the migration of the email-only account first, then the master account.
After that, whichever one it is that is wanted as the primary account needs to be entered in System Preferences>iCloud. And of course his father, who uses the email-only account, may have his own user account and can set up the ex-email-only account as a primary account there.

  • How can I use home sharing between our iphones (create playlists from both accounts at once)

How can I use home sharing between our iphones, so that we can create playlists with songs from both of our libraries?  We share a Macbook Pro (separate accounts) and each have the new iphone, but when I have my iphone and try to create a new playlist, I can only grab songs from one account.  Is there a way to create a playlist using both accounts since we are sharing?
Does it have to be created within iTunes first on our Mac?

The short answer: because Home Sharing isn't designed for sharing apps, and apps aren't designed to be shared.
The longer answer:  Think of it like this...
You download some music in iTunes.  With Home Sharing, another user can listen to it by streaming it over the network.  But the data itself is on your computer.  If you turn off the computer or take it off the network, the other user can't access it.
But if you send another user the app, they aren't just streaming the data- they installed it on their iOS device.  Because they weren't the one that purchased it, such a transfer could easily be considered "piracy" or "stealing," and nobody likes that (least of all, Apple).
When iTunes sees this app, it obviously recognized it, as if saying, "Hey, how did you get this app on your device, if I have no record of you purchasing/downloading it from the iTunes store?"

  • Another "This itunes account is set up to use family sharing with a different icloud account than Apple ID "

I saw another thread on the matter but thought I would post because the circumstances are different. Here is how it happened.
I have had an Apple Store account for years and until recently our family has only had our one Mac and my iPhone 4. Thus any purchases we have made on the Apple App Store were made only with this account.
We recently purchased two iPhone 5S's--one for my wife and one for my daughter. Neither had Apple IDs so first we set up my wife's iPhone and created an Apple ID for her. Next we used the Family Sharing feature to set up an account for our "under age 13" daughter.
Because I am still waiting for my iPhone 6 Plus to arrive, and because the iPhone 4 cannot upgrade to iOS 8, and because my Apple ID is the only account with any apps that have been purchased in prior years, I set up my wife as the Family Organizer but when I set up her account, I chose the option to "share purchases from a different account" and entered the information for my Apple ID.
My daughter is able to view my prior purchases on her iPhone, but when my wife tries to view my prior purchases, she receives the message "This iTunes account is set up to use Family Sharing with a different iCloud account than <her Apple ID>."
I hope Apple is reading this. I would be more than willing to help them on this one as this feature is one of the main reasons I put our family on iPhones.

I had this problem. I finally figured it out yesterday. Try this:
On the device that is having trouble seeing purchases, go to Settings>iCloud>Family Sharing> Then tap on the user of the device you are on. Under "Family Purchases" make sure it has the AppleID of the person for that device. Mine originally had my husbands AppleID in there (he is the Organizer), but I changed it to mine. That doesn't make it so that the purchases are under me. The purchases remained under my husband, but my ID had to be in this spot for it to work.
After that, I closed settings, then I went to Settings>iTunes and App Store> click on the AppleID and Sign Out, even if it has the right AppleID in there. Then Sign In again using the AppleID of the person on that device. Again-- even if it has the right ID in there to start, still sign out and back in.
See if they show up. If they don't show up still, try doing a restart (hold down power button and home button until it restarts).
They should show up by then, but if they don't, at that point, try to go into iCloud and Sign Out and back in.
I think the key is having the right ID in "Family Purchases". I hope this works for you.

  • How do i move only my library from a shared itunes account to my new account

How do i transfer only my library from a shared itunes account to my new account

I am confused by terminology, not knowing what you mean by "iTunes account".  You have a computer account which is your user area on a computer.  You have an Apple ID that you use to buy items from the iTunes Store.  You have a media collection which is an iTunes library.  So what is your "iTunes account" and what exactly do you want to do?

  • SMB File Sharing only works for Admin Accounts???

I'm using a mac mini as a small file server. It will share files to WindowsPCs using SMB but there is a problem.
On the Option dialog where you select accounts to share files and folders using SMB only Admin accounts show up. This is far from ideal as I'd prefer to using Sharing Only or Standard accounts.
Is this a known issue? Is there a solution?

What permissions are you setting on the share?  My guess is you are only using user, group, and other (POSIX).  You need to add an ACL to the list and then set read/write or full control.
