Using a single source project in a multiuser shared storage environment
I wanted to get some opinions on wether or not some adobe experts feel there would be any negative issues or problems with this type of workflow.
having several cs5 machines all on a shared fibre san system. all machines access the same projects and source materials and have their own internal drive containing the media cache and database. Then creating a single standard project with a sequence and bins and a few normally used files in it.
Then every time someone wants to start a new project they would load this "workflow" project in and then save it out to a different drive with the new project name and start editing from there.
I am concerned that not creating a new project every time that there might be something going on in the background with metadata or media cache or something strange that could cause any problems with copying the same project every time?
thanks!
Thanks, I missed a little bit of clarification there. we do not use macs, all our machines are windows 7. (really wish the forums were seperated for mac and pc)
also we are not using a networked multiuser environment. there is one standard user account that is the same on every machine and always used.
the main issue is that each machine has fibrechannel access to the same 36TB raid array. It is divided up into 4 drive letters that all show up the same on each machine.
we have been working this way for quite awhile already. it works, any machine can load any project and work on it. I am just wondering if it could be causing any of the different strange random problems we see from time to time.
we are actually in the process of upgrading all our machines from cs4 to cs5.
on of the main issues we have had so far is cfa files. when you load a project on another machine it makes a new cfa file even though there was one there already and it incremements the file#. some dirs i will look and there will be 12 cfa files for one clip. we set all our machines to save next to original in prefs.
i think that issue might be resolved in cs5 though. we are still trying to get converted over.
will there ever be a time we could put the media cache and database on the same shared drive that all machines look at? or is it that way now in cs5? cs5.5?
we have file-level san sharing setup so all machines can read and write at the same time and read the same files without any conflicts.
thanks!

Adobe project file is hogging shared storage bandwidth even when paused
I have a particular Premiere Pro project, that when opened, completely hogs my Terrablock storage bandwidth. I have inserted a screenshot of the storage servers disk activity even when that project file is paused. I have no other project files open or file transfers going. When I close this project, all disk activity goes to zero. This happens with no other projects and I can open it from other Mac towers with the same result.
Here is an image of the disk activity with that project open and paused.Hi Mark,
Since my original post, I have noticed at least one other project hogging the storage bandwidth. Both projects are accessing completely different files and have a varying number of sequences.
The first project has about 45 sequences with none of them over about 90 minutes in length. The sequences are referencing .mp4s and are multicammed with two shots and occasionally contain another camera laid on top of the footage. The graphics were exported as Quicktime files and are only included in some of the sequences. This project also contains some title cards along with some png and psd files. The original stringout sequences of the footage were imported into the project using Media Browser.
The second project has 13 sequences and is referencing Quicktime Proxy footage including multicams containing two different shots. Most of the sequences contain only about 10 minutes of footage at the most. There are numerous title cards throughout this project and some of the shots are scaled in a bit. This is a duplicate of the original project (which is not hogging bandwidth) and somehow started causing bandwidth problems during the edit. No sequences were imported either.
I have also noticed that both of these projects somehow make Premiere Pro 2014 unable to close. A force quit is required for both to exit out of the program or open another project. -
How Do I Use a SINGLE Custom CSS for My Project?
How do I set a single CSS for a project?
Currently, I have linked (I checked, they are actually linked) FM files. The project is Responsive HTML 5 Single Source Layout. It is set up this way:
Project Files
Each FM file has a folder that contains a CSS, an FPJ, any baggage (PNG, for example) and an HTM.
So, for my project, I have 31 such folders.
Above them is RHStyleMapping.css.
That's it
To map my project to a custom CSS, I did this:
1) Created the custom CSS (let's call it TheSingleCSS-sb01.css) and put it in the same location as RHStyleMapping.css.
2) Right-clicked Responsive HTML5 (Primary Layout) in the Single Source Layouts pane.
3) Selected Properties. The Responsive HTML5 Properties dialog box opens.
4) Click Content, select the Apply to all Topics check box, select CSS, and choose my CSS, TheSingleCSS-sb01.css.
5) Click Save and Generate. Generating happens.
6) When prompted, click View Result.
7) Double-click one of the resulting topics, and choose the HTML tab.
8) Notice the following CSS files are referenced, NOT the one I want:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="Configuration_ChangeWorkflow.css" type="text/css" />
<link rel="stylesheet" href="..\..\RHStyleMapping.css" type="text/css" />
<image>
So:
1) How can I replace 32 individual CSSes with one single custom CSS?
2) Also note that Project Manager does not display my custom CSS, even though it is in the same location as RHStyleMapping.css and referenced in the Properties dialog box.
Thanks all,
SeanHi, so as I mentioned before, I have used Apply to all and this doesn't work. The resulting HTML still uses a specific CSS for that one HTML file.
1) I put the CSS I want to use, Sean01.css, in the top level of my project using Windows Explorer.
2) I Save and Generate.
3) But, my settings for styles in the CSS are not used. For example, FM_GlossaryDefinition is defined with a 0 left indent but actually uses a 144pt indent (that mirrors the print FM document and that I do not want).
4) And, you can see from the actual HTML, that the Sean01.css file that I applied to all topics (see the first image) is not referenced. What am I doing wrong?
What am I doing wrong? Again, these are imported FM files; this is not linked.
Thanks,
Sean -
How can I use single source images in text?
I'm using RoboHelp HTML 11, and I want to use single source images of icons in text, so that I have the ability to update the source image, as needed, and all instances of the image are updated automatically. The look is as follows:
I've tried snippets, but they force a paragraph return in the text which I don't want.
I tried inserting the source code for an image into a variable, but when I inserted the variable into the text, I got an error message in the text.
Is there a way to use variables to do this or some other method?
Thanks.HI there
The one possible drawback to this approach would be if the image size changes. You *MAY* find that saving a different sized image and replacing one would result in perhaps needing to visit each instance of the image and right-clicking and choosing "Reset Size".
I'm not sure why your variable failed with the image. Generally, it's simple to insert an image into the variable. I typically start the process by typing something like "XX" as the variable value. Then in the UDV pod, select the XX and replace it with the desired image.

The Unifier environment
contains two single-instance project shells, INF and PBS, and two multiple-instance child project shells, INFS and
PB. There is a single instance, non-workflow
business process, ‘Project Information’ that contains a data element in the
upper form definition, Project ID. The Project ID is set to auto-populate from the multi-instance “INFS”
project shell attribute, which is populated manually.
Issue: The auto-populate functionality for the
Project ID ‘Shell_shellName_shell’ data element within the single-instance
Project Information BP only functions within one of the shells, either
INFS or PB, but not both. The INF and INFS shells are currently deployed
to production, PB and PBS shell are not.
It is critical that Project ID ‘Shell_shellname_shell’ data element is populated correctly in the
Project Information upper form of both shells, INFS and PB,
because that data element is referenced by multiple business processes and
integrations.
The attribute form definitions for both single and multiple instance project shells are identical. The Project ID utilizes the same data
element ‘SHELL_shellName_shell’ as is defined in both shell attribute forms
(INFS and PB).
The data definition source is a Unifier system-level variable, SYS Shell
Name (String, 128, Text Box)
Potential Solutions:
1. Create a Project ID DE of another data type which can
be successfully auto-populated from either shell. Drawback: all BPs and integrations which
reference Shell_Shellname_shell will need to be rewritten.
2. Investigate converting the Project Information single-instance
to a multi-instance BP, and create a
separate instance for each single-instance shell type. Same Drawback as Option #1, but with additional
rework. Most likely Project Information
would have to be recreated as a new BP.
Not sure that this option would even work.
3. Create a separate Project Information BP for PB. Drawback: Two separate BPs for Project Information would
need to be created. All existing BPs
refer to Project Information, so this option could potentially invalidate the
ability to use the existing BPs in the PB shell. Was it really necessary to post the whole API description?!?
Locale[] locales = Locale.ENGLISH();ENGLISH is not a method in class Locale, so do not add the braces "( );".
Also, the constant ENGLISH is not an array, but just a single Locale object.

Robohelp 9 Compiler/Single Source Layouts are dead
Hi
We are using Robohelp 9 on Windows 7 and after working on the same project for 2 years now, all of a sudden, the project will not close down without crashing it from the Task Manager, and also we select compile HTML file and it just does nothing.
We cannot compile any single source layout. We also cannot create a new single source layout - system just ignores all commands.
We tried deleting part of the project - thinking it was maybe too big, but that is not the case.
We tried copying the project to another computer thinking maybe the installation is corrupt.
We also tried deleting the cpd - no luck.
Can anyone put light on this matter - why do these things always happen just before a deadline?
Thank you
MelanieFirst we need to ascertain if this is machine or project specific?
Did the copy work OK on the other machine?
What happens with one of the sample projects on the problem machine? Click Open on the RoboHelp Starter page and then click Samples in the ribbon on the left.

RH9 - Can I restore layouts in "Single Source Layouts" pod from .ssl files?
RH 9 (latest)
Windows 7 x64
Due to some corruption somewhere in our main help project that prevented me from generating layouts using the RoboHelp command line (rhcl.exe), I deleted my .xpj file and .cpd file, and then recreated the .xpj project file from the .hhp file. This is the recommended fix to get things back to normal that I did two years ago when I got this same error. (For info, see Command line generation errors in log. How do I fix this?)
However, as expected, all my single source layouts are now missing from the Single Source Layouts pod. Is there a way to recreate the single source layouts from the .ssl files so they appear back in the pod with their previous settings? Like a way to re-import then into the project? I have 36 individual ssls just for printable output alone that I spent creating all day last Friday (1 per chapter), I really do NOT want to manually recreate them.
A related question is, where does RH store the link between xpj and ssl layouts? Because when I checked the xpj inside Notepad++ prior to deleting it, there weren't any references to the individual single source layout files there; I don't understand how deleting an xpj file removes references to the ssls when the .ssl files obviously still exist in the project folder.I'm not at a Rh machine to check where the link is stored but this should work.
Move the old layouts from the project.
Recreate layouts with the same character perfect names. Leave default settings.
With Rh closed, open them in a text editor. Do the same with the old files
and copy the content across.
Backups everywhere of course. -
Single Source JavaHelp Missing
I've created a project using RoboHelp HTML 7 and have the
WebHelp Single Source output as my primary output. The application
developer wants the JavaHelp output, but I don't have that
available in my Single Source Layout as a choice. It is available
in my RoboHelp Word 7 though.
Any ideas how to add it to RoboHelp HTML? I don't want to
have to copy the project to RoboHelp Word, just to output for
JavaHelp.
Thanks!Welcome to our community, Cathy
You will need to install the Java Development Kit (I think
that's the name) and you will need to right-click the Single Source
Layouts area and choose to add a new layout. When you add a new
layout, you should see the option for JavaHelp.
I think it's not there by default because so few folks use
it. WebHelp is really a better way to go.

Single source for different online help guides
I am glad that the single source layout pod in RH7 supports
different channels.
I also need to output to different online webhelps using
shared topics. This is what should be called single source.
Is it the best practice to create a set of taylored and
overlapping TOCs for a related set of online helps?
My working environment consists of a single software product
with different user interfaces for different types (and levels) of
users. For each type of interface, a different webhelp is mounted.
How can I make sure that the online help title displayed in
the web help browser tab is the correct one for each variation of
the online help?Single source is anything that lets you get more than one
output from one source, be those outputs ten different webhelp
outputs or just one and a printed document output.
You can have as many webhelp outputs as you can manage. Right
click and add new ones or copy existing ones as a base.
Best practice depends on your content. You can have different
TOCs for each output or you can have a smaller number and apply
conditional tags. So with say 10 outputs you could have just three
or four TOCs and apply conditional tags to vary them. It's whatever
works best for you and can be understood by anyone you work with.
The scenario you describe would be ideal for the way RH
works.
The title bar and browser tab take their text from the
Project Title in Project Settings so you will need to change that
for each output. -
DBAShell - New Open Source Project for Oracle DBA's
I'd like to have this project included in the Open Source Oracle tools list at: http://www.oracle.com/technology/community/opensource_projects.html
I've been an Oracle DBA for quite some time (since 7.0.13) and a developer for many years. One of the things I've always wished for was an easier way to set up environment variables for different Oracle Homes and a way to provide passwords to scripts without embedding them in plain-view.
About 3 years ago, I started a set of functions and scripts at my company that did exactly just that and provided many more functions for things like checking database status, running scripts quietly unless errors are detected, running actions in parallel (like fast shutdowns at once, or multiple analyzes), restarting databases in a guaranteed fashion, aliases to common folder locations, etc..
About a month ago, after putting all this time and effort into these scripts and using them in production all this time, I realized I wanted more out of the scripts like support for other databases and thought that it would be best if I gave it new life as an Open Source project.
So that is how http://sourceforge.net/projects/dbashell/ was started. Now its in a second release (DBAShell 0.85) that is more modular and would allow other people to easily add support for other OSs, other Shells, and other Databases.
Here is a description of the project from the latest news item:
DBAShell is a project based around Shell functions and scripts designed to make it easy for DBA's to use Databases in a command line environment. Currently supported is Oracle with ksh and bash on AIX, Solaris, Linux. The code base itself is 3 years old and has been in use in Production environments all of that time.
Features include:
* Automatic setting of all environment variables based on SID requested.
* Manage PATH's and other path like variables for each ORACLE_HOME needed.
* Run scripts with stored passwords (no more hard-coding of passwords!!)
* Automatically set SID based on Script location (makes it easier to share scripts between SID's)
* manage temporary script output and check for oracle errors in output
* check database status and versions from scripts
* stop/start databases in parallel (faster startup)
* compile all database objects
* analyze objects in parallel (Faster analyzes)
* set aliases and variables for common SID areas, etc..
* many helpful commands for common Oracle tasks
Over a thousand people have already downloaded the prior release and more are downloading every hour.
I'm seeking feedback from anybody that would be willing to take a look at the project, trying it out, give me any feedback you have on it, and perhaps even direct me to where I could best promote this project.
I wrote a tutorial that shows at a glance some of the more useful features of DBAShell:

Open Source project - request for interest
Hi,
I know this may not be the most appropriate place for this but I couldnt find anywhere else. The project is due to start up in early 2006. The technology is Java based and supports J2EE. It enables developers to work at a high level and generate apps very quickly and more complex functionality can be built using Java to address requirements.
I thought I would post this here for anyone interested in participating in a new Open Source project for a Java development tool.
I apologise in advance if anyone gets upset over this post - but I thought Java developers should be aware of the project.
Thanks.
Be in at the start of an exciting new Open Source initiative!
If you're a Java developer and you'd be interested in participating in the development of a new UK-based Open Source project then read on.
The project would seek to take an existing, powerful J2EE-based rapid web application development tool on to the next level. Sitting happily alongside other well-known open source names such as Red Hat, MySQL and JBoss, it enables the building and deploying of J2EE-based web applications in a fraction of the time that it would otherwise take to develop them. But the possibilities are only limited by your imagination.
So, if you're interested in contributing to the evolution of this project please email us at [email protected] with your contact details and we will be in touch with you. Thanks for the ponter, I will check it out.

Open Source Project Announcement...
I have started an open source project to build a module for
PHP4 that will allow direct calls to Tuxedo services from
the PHP script, the project name is php-tuxedo.
Think about it for a second... The ability from inside a
PHP web page to directly call already existing Tuxedo
services anywhere in your environment. Just like PHP can
open a database connection to Oracle or Sybase, it would
open a Tuxedo connection as a Tux client to a Tuxedo
middleware environment.
For those who have used PHP, you know how easy it is to
build dynamic web pages. But those pages are mostly limited
to database queries or flat file access for data. With this
project you could call all your existing enterprise Tuxedo
services directly. I believe this would be a very powerful
enhancement to PHP's capabilities.
To those familiar with Tuxedo, you know about how powerful
an implementation of Tux middleware services can be for
departmental and enterprise solutions.
I want to bring these two pieces together.
Project status. The project is in its early infancy, but
some parts are functional. I have successfully built a
client page that uses a STRING buffer to call a service with
tpcall and returns a STRING buffer back. Primitive? Sure,
but this is only the start. I have ideas of how to
implement many other functions and buffer types including
FMLs.
There is much work to do, but if you are interested please
check out http://php-tuxedo.sourceforge.net. There you can
download my first cut and more importantly follow the
project as it progresses. For the really ambitious I would
welcome any testing or development help on the project.
