Using a smart address group from Address Book

I might be asking sth already been answered but I cant find it, so sorry,  but how do you send an email to a group of contacts who have been grouped by a Smart Group in Address Book? Address Book's help says
If you don’t have a group of addresses, create one.
Creating groups or foldersChoose File > Send Updates.
In the dialog that appears, select the group or groups you want to notify.
Type a subject title and a message, and then click Send.
The trouble is that Send Updates is grey-ed out - see below!
What? How am I meant to follow those instructions if the menu option is grey-ed out?
Helen.

Helen,
In your original question, your screen shot shows that the active application is AddressBook, and you are trying to use its File menu. The option you discuss is for sending updates of your own address card, not for sending out group emails. In other words, if you change your own contact details in AddressBook, you can send the new contact details out using this menu option. I hope that this is what you intended, rather than simply sending out an email to a [Smart] group as others have discussed.
However, I cannot get the 'Send Updates' option in the File menu to be disabled in the way you have managed. I note that you are still in the edit mode on the current contact in the screen shot (the Edit button has blue text instead of black). I also note that 'Save' in the File menu is enabled, implying that you have a currently unsaved change somewhere. Maybe one of these issues is preventing you sending out your new contact details.
I expect by now that you have sorted this out yourself. If not, have you tried closing AddressBook and re-opening to resolve the unsaved issue?

  • Syncing Smart Groups from Address Book

Spent a lot of time creating a smart group in address book, only to find that iphone sync doesn't recognize "Smart Groups", only regular groups. Maybe the engineers can write some script to fix this little bugaboo to have the sync software recognize smart groups from Address Book and place them in the box so that the user can select the smart group and not have to sync the whole address book. Thanks.

Yes. Please. It would be great if the syncing of smart groups were to be added. Right now with the large amount of address' I manage for business, it's important that I see the same groups on my iPhone.
    Please add.

  • When emailing a group from address book it opens individual emails....

When emailing a group from address book it opens individual emails for each name rather than one email with all email addresses listed. Have I set things up wrongly or is there something I can do to have a single email sent to multiple addressees via Address Book?

    Hello,
When addressing an email for this group, are you
entering only the name of the Group as the address?
    More info, please.

    Thanks for your reply.
Yes, it works directly in Mail - type in group name and all's well and lovely - but if I'm in Address Book and want to email a group it opens numerous emails. THere seems to be no way of opening Mail from Address Book and go straight to emailing a group.

  • Cannot send email to Smart Group from Address Book

I created several Smart Groups in Address Book but I can't use any of them to send email. When I right-click the group name and choose Send Email, it opens my default email program (Thunderbird) and puts only the name of the Smart Group into the To: field, not the actual addresses.
If I try to actually send the message, I get the error that (name of group) "is not a valid e-mail address because it is not of the form user@host. You must correct it before sending the email."
What am I doing wrong? How can I get it to paste the actual addresses and not just the name of the group? I looked at the Edit Distribution List window and all the addresses are there.
    I'm using OS X 10.5.7, Address Book 4.1.2 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.22.
    Thanks in advance.

What is the exact message you get when sending fails -- does it say there are one or more invalid addresses, or what?
Having a name in the list without email address or possibly one separated by comma between last and first might result similarly in an invalid address, and Mail will likely refuse to send to any. But if the message is from the SMTP, that might depend on the provider's policies for that.

  • New Mail program will not let me drag groups from address book to email

The new Mail program will not allow me to drag groups of addresses from the Address Book like I could before upgrading.  Is there a setting somewhere I am missing?  What is the fix on this problem?

  • Issues email a group from Address Book

I have a group in my Address Book that I email about 4 times a year. The issue is that the group has over 210 members and a couple have multiple email addresses. I typically email them from my Gmail account. The "To:" field contains another email address of mine, and the group email addresses go into the "BCC:" field. At some point in time I had to break the mailing into 4 mailings because Apple Mail or the Gmail couldn't seem to handle something. It seems that the something was the large number of names. I am open to getting a third party program if it is not too expensive. Thank you in advance.

Most e-mail providers limit the number of recipients in a single message.  GMail is no exception.  See:
    http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=22839
    To quote the relevant part:
If you use a POP1 or IMAP2 client (Microsoft Outlook or Apple Mail, e.g.), you may only send a message to 100 people at a time.
To send to that list, looks like you can send to up to 500 using the GMail web interface, so you'd have to do that instead of using Mail.

  • BACKUP only ONE group from address book

One of my groups was accidently deleted from address book (I guess, anyway it is gone). I have a backup but I only want to restore that ONE group in the book. When I click on the backup file it says it will completely overwrite my address book. I don't want to do that.
How can I retrieve just the one group (which has about 150 addresses in it)? I do not know which of the names in my ALL list should be in this group.

The Address Book filing structure is similar to the filing structure used by iTunes.
You can't place a song in a new or existing playlist group without the song being added to the primary iTunes database first and the same with Address Book contacts.
As you know, deleting a contact from a Group or deleting the entire Group does not remove the Group contacts from the primary Address Book database.
You can't import a Group only from an Address Book backup file.

  • Export/Import groups from address book?

How do I export group lists from address book and import them to another MAC?

I can import individual contacts but when I export and then import a group list it imports as single contacts that go into the general contact folder.  I cannot seem to import them as groups.

  • Deleting contacts or groups from address book impossible

How can I delete contacts or groups from my address book? The corresponding menu items "delete contact" or "delete group" are greyed. Pressing the "delete" buttom only works for contacts. But the deleted contact isn't really erased. There remains an untitled contact at the end of the list that I cannot delete. Not very nice :-(
    Does anybody knows some help?

I can't recreate that on my Mac, so I suspect something got corrupted in your preferences.
    Quit Contacts.
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library".
Then go to yor Preferences folder and and drag com.apple.AddressBook.plist to your Desktop.
    Relaunch Contacts and test.

  • Importing Address Groups from Outlook Express 5 (Mac) to OS 10.3 Mail

I've successfully imported all my emails and email folders from Outlook Express (Mac) to Mail. The contacts imported into my Address Book, but not collected into their groups. I need those address groups!
Thanks for any pointers you can offer.

    Resolved.

  • Default Email Addresses Picked From Address Book in Groups?

Many of the records in my address book have more than one email address. When I am sending an email to that individual I start to type their name and am presented with the various choices -- I believe the address I most recently used (or maybe most recently received from) is at the top.
But I just ran into some troubles.
I made a Group of people and want to send a mass email. But, unbeknown to me the email addresses seem to be picked as the first one on the address card.
    Do you follow?
How do I create the groups so mass mailings go to the email specify?

You may very well get an answer here, but it's quite acceptable to start a new topic of your own, feel free to start a new topic to attract more helpers to your particular situation should it be a little different, here's a link if as is often the case, it's hard to find out where to do it...

  • Smartmailbox sorting a group from address book

I've set up a group in my address book with about 100 names. When I receive mail from anybody in that group, I want it to go to that smart mailbox. Can I do that without copying and pasting or typing each email into the mailbox rules? It would be nice if there was a way to say "any body from this group goes into that folder." Is that possible.

Create a smart mail box in mail with that rule that messages from people in that group will be moved to that folder

  • Problem with mailing Groups from Address book

I have been using Groups in my address book for a while - adding people to Groups and using the Group name to email them all at once.  Recently (since turning on iCloud, though I don't know if that is the cause) I am finding the following problem.  I add new people to my address book.  I add those new people to a Group.  I go to mail and use the Group name... but the new people are not in the email list (when I drill into it).  If I go to the address book and use control-click and the drop-down box to select the option to send a mail to the Group, the same thing happens.  Any suggestions out there?  Thanks.

I am having a similar problem. All the addresses are correct, and I know this because I use them all the time with no errors. BUT when bundled into a group - actually any group I set up I cannot send successfully. I have two groups in my mail program and neither will work.

  • Problem with Groups from Address Book in Apple Mail

I have set up a group in my address book. When I use Apple Mail I use this group to send specific messages to. But for some reason I keep getting error messages saying that my outgoing sever encountered a problem with the messgae. It only happens when I send messages with a group, not if I send messages to single recipients. The group consists of 90 emails, so I can't enter their emails each time I want to send a message to the group.
    Thanks in advance,
