Using a TV as display monitor

Hi, I'm new on the forum and look forward to learning the best way to use my new computer. I just bought a G71-340 laptop, and would like to use my HD tv as the display to watch Netflix movies.
The only port available for a computer connection on my tv is a 15 pin (D-Sub) cable. The laptop does not seem to have any compatible port to make a connection. If anyone has a suggestion for a work-around that would enable me to make a satisfactory connection between the two devices, I would appreciate any help.

Mirrored mode mirrors the display including resolution. Use extended mode not mirrored mode to set the external display resolution to the TV's native mode.

  • Is it possible to use my iMac as a display monitor ?

I'd like to use my iMac as display monitor but I don't know if its possible. Anyone knows how it works ?

There is a feature in OS X called target display mode that may allow you to do what you are looking for.
Take a look at this article as it explains it in detail pretty well http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4469
The main thing is that it is Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt or mini-display to mini-display/Thunderbolt. So if you are looking to hook a PC up to your iMac then you are out of luck as to my knowledge there are no VGA to mini-display adapters
Also look out for what OS you are running and what model of mac you have.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3775 This article discusses a particular model of iMac that cannot use the Target display mode.
    Hope that Helps!

Your's may look more like this...
...if you're running Mountain Lion. I'm in clamshell mode right now, so I don't have any mirroring options. AFAIK, there's no more "Show displays in menu bar" in Mountain Lion.

As i had said, I have an Apple Powerbook G4, and my monitor doesn't function. I have an external display Monitor, however it's stuck in extended screen mode. How do I get it to mirror or duplicate the display without use of the on-board? Is there a Fn key combo i'm missing or is the issue more serious then i realize? any and all help and hints would be greatly apprichiated, thanks in advance.

The PowerBooks have an F-key that toggles mirrored and extended mode. My PB is loaned out right now but I think it was f7. The keycap has an icon on two overlapping rectangles, as I recall.
EDIT: Yes! Found a pdf of the PB manual it shows F7 is the toggle:

  • Using Visio 37" HDTV  (not monitor) as Display for mini

I really WANT to buy my FIRST Apple mini as my only computer! Will it work with my Visio 37" HDTV? I want to buy a cable that has the HDMI connector at one end for the TV and DVI on the other for the mini. Can it be that simple???
Thanks for input. I want to go to the Apple Store Friday!!!

I was in the same "boat" about wanting to use an LCD for a monitor. But, due to the higher resolution of a dedicated computer LCD vs a TV/LCD I opted for a Dell 24" Ultra Sharp W2408WFP to get the maximum capabilities out of my Mac Mini. Yes, the monitor is expensive, for me about $599 plus $45 shipping but included a 3 year warranty. However, unlike a traditional TV/LCD's resolution of approx. 1366 x 768 you will get the full 1900 x 1200 with the Dell 24" monitor (as with most other quality 22"-24" computer monitor's.
Now that is important if you are going to use this display hooked up to your Mac as a desktop, i.e. web browsing, various app's etc. The higher resolution will make the fonts and fine details of what you are looking at much clearer than what you are looking at with a TV/LCD. PLus, with a 32" LCD you will need to sit that bad boy a good 3 to 4 feet from your face in order to focus properly. However, if like many users of Mini's you will use it mainly as an entertainment hub for movies and itunes than I believe the TV/LCD such as the 32" Vizio (I have one in fact) would make for a better investment.

  • Using FCP 7 - Can I connect two more displays to the new 27" iMac and have one as a display monitor?

I use Final Cut Pro 7 right now and am thinking about buying the new 27" iMac with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB GDDR5 card. I have a 24" Apple Cinema Display with mini Display port cable. I also have one more Samsung display with DVI & HDMI. Can I connect both monitors to the iMac and be able to use one in FCP as a display monitor?

    Hello,
Maybe a device like the Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Adapter or StarTech USB 3.0 to HDMI an DVI Dual Monitor External Video Card Adapter would work?

  • Can I use two HP Pavillion 23bw monitors with my MBP with Retina Display?

Can I use two HP Pavillion 23bw monitors with my MBP with Retina Display with good video quality? I just purchased them and am already reading about issues with non-Apple External Monitors being used with MBP with Retina.  Plus I just assumed it given the power of the video card, but I can turn off the display to my MBP and extend the two HP monitors correct? I do realize they won't have the picture quality of the retina display but I would hope they look reasonable with 1080p

This is an update on the question about the use of the Dell P2415Q 4K monitor with MacBook Pro 13" and 15" w/ Nvidia graphics card installed. The monitor works very well with both systems and is automatically identified when connected. The 13" machine with Iris Graphics defaults to 2560 x 1440 at 60hz. This was very workable, matching the Apple Thunderbolt Display for resolution. I was not able to set the display for full 4K at 3840 x 2160, even at 30hz. Just not enough horsepower with the basic Intel CPU with Iris Graphics. But make no mistake, the setup works well and the screen looks great.
The 15" with Iris Pro Graphics and the Nvidia GeForce GT 575M discrete graphics card also recognized the display and drove it at full 4K, 3840 x 2160, 60hz with no problems. Running in clamshell mode required a bit of fine tuning with the Apple display settings. But nothing major.
Due to a relatively small workstation, I selected the 24" version of the Dell monitor. If you are looking for a relatively large monitor with near "retina" resolution, the P2415Q is a perfect pairing for the MacBook Pro - and a terrific bargain. I paid $530 on the Dell website.

  • Anyone use the Eye-One Display 2 to Calibrate their monitors?

Just wondering if anyone on the forum today has used the Eye-One to calibrate their monitors and if you like it?

The best way to view DV video output is on a monitor that is designed for that format. Computer monitors are progressive and run in a different color space than NTSC/PAL monitors. If you want to really see how your video slide show displays, you should monitor it on an NTSC display. Keep in mind that LCD and plasma TVs still do not have the dynamic range of good ol' crt TVs. The sony PVM-14L2 (now discontinued) is a great choice for monitoring DV.
How to calibrate a NTSC monitor:
    http://www.synthetic-ap.com/tips/calibrate.pdf
    http://www.bluesky-web.com/colorbars.html
    http://www.videouniversity.com/tvbars2.htm
    http://www.mediacollege.com/video/calibration/
You need some device between the computer and the TV to convert the firewire out DV into analog to be fed to the TV. The A/DV converter can be your camcorder, a DV deck or a dedicated device such as those made by Canopus (the ADVC series).
S-video should yield a better signal than composite. Component would be better yet but most simple a/dv converters don't offer that as an i/o option.
If you want to work in HDV, all of the above is meaningless. HDV does not monitor via firewire. You need a 3rd party card (eg Kona LH) or an external DVI box (Matrox MXO) to convert the signal to a displayable format. And, you need an HD monitor or, with the Matrox, you can use a 23" Apple display.
    Good luck.

  • How can I use my 23" cinema display with a pc laptop?

I see various questions out there about using Apple Cinema Displays and PCs, but each one has its own twist. If anybody can help with this scenario, I'd greatly appreciate it.
I use one of the last editions of the Powerbook G4. I just bought a 23" Cinema Display and, of course, love it. It is supposed to replace an old CRT monitor in the home office, which brings me to my problem. Can I hook up a pc laptop to use with the Cinema Display (I ocassionally need the pc laptop and my wife and kid use it as well). I realize it will depend on the graphics card. Offhand I'm not sure which one it is, but the Dell is just shy of a year old and has good graphics, albeit VGA. I need a female DVI (I assume DVI-I) and a male VGA connector. Do these exist? I'm also looking for a PC Card DVI-I graphics card, but I don't know if these exist either.
I could buy a Dell (or some other brand) monitor that has both DVI and VGA connections, but I really want to keep the Cinema Display. It's gorgeous.
    Thanks for any help.
    Regards.
    Powerbook G4 15" Mac OS X (10.4.5) 23" Cinema Display

    Phil,
Thank you for the reply. I kind of figured this was the case. I have found two "boxes" that supposedly handle this problem. One is from Dr. Botts called Vgator and the other is from Gefen (www.gefen.com), but these solutions are very expensive -- $300 each -- and I am not certain of the quality of the picture. For that kind of money, I could buy a cheap PC monitor and just use the Cinema Display for Mac-only needs, as it was intended.
    Take care.
    Dan.
