Using a *.wmv file to make a home video playable in DVD players?

Hello all,
I have a project where I need to take a slide show made in Windows Movie Maker (.wmv file extension), burn it to a CD and make it play in a DVD Player. I attempted just making a VCD on a Windows XP laptop, but it wouldn't play in the DVD Player.
So, can iDVD '08 help me out with this? I have a Mac Mini, but I'm not very familiar with it yet (bought it just a few months ago).
For clarification, what I need to do with this wmv slide show is burn it to a CD that can be played in a DVD player and I'm wondering if iDVD can do this for me. Already attempted making a VCD on a Windows XP laptop.
Any ideas would be great. Thanks!

Hi
She can't play it on her PC, nor can I at home.
Ussually it's a DVD player software matter. Windows Media Player is not intended for DVD playing. Did you use it when it failed? Try with the free and cross plataform VLC Player.

  • How to make a highlight video from a DVD?

I want to make a highlight video from a dvd.  How do I get this dvd into iMovie?  I tried the import feature but I am getting an error stating it doesn't see any movies on the DVD.

Video calling is a feature offered by your service provider.  You'd first have to sign up for the service then you'd need a phone that supports it.  Currently, I'm not aware of any BlackBerry phone that supports it.  The Chinese movie you saw might not have been technically accurate.  Case in point, I saw the Green Hornet movie recently and he has a car that does loads of cool things.  Turns out, if you watch the DVD extras, most of those stunts were fake.

  • Using a .WMV file in DVD Studio Pro

    Hello All,
I'm so dangerously close to having this whole thing down, that the challenges are becoming excrutiatingly painful.
    I've completed my edit.
I've exported my FCP edit to Quicktime.
    I've downloaded Flip4Mac
I've exported a version of the FCP to a WMV file format.
Now I want to import both assets (QT and WMV) to DVD Studio Pro. I'm trying to make it so there are two seperate versions on the DVD.
As I attempt to link a button to the WMV file, I get the rainbow wheel turning, and it never stops.
So, I guess there are a few questions:
    1. How can I force the rainbow wheel to quit. Until now, I've just shutoff the computer (not a good idea).
    2. Is it possible to combine the QT and WMV files on the same DVD?
    3. Am I totally confused?
    Thanks.

  • Can you use an XML file to make Subclips for you?

    Hi everyone,
I know this is a bit of a long-shot, but I am wondering if I can use an XML file(made after logging a few tapes, but before capture) to make subclips for me?
Basically I have a painful project with 2 tapes i had to capture separately as 1 long individual clip each due to time-code breaks, but as i did first Log & Capture as usual (only to later find it wouldn't batch capture) i didn't want my hard work to go to waste!
Hope I explained that clearly enough,
    Adam

I'm assuming you captured using the non-controllable device setting and have the clip including TC breaks and blank areas etc.
    Try this:
Load the clip into the Viewer and play it. Press M to set markers wherever you want them.
If you want to give the marker a more decriptive name, press M a second time whilst the playhead is positioned on the marker. A dialog will open with text input fields. Or, click the marker in the Browser, then click the marker’s name to select it. You can now change the name.
Drag in the Browser to select all the markers or click the first one, then shift click the last one.
Choose Modify > Make Subclip. This will make all the subclips in one go and if you gave your markers new names, your subclips will use them.
The subclips appear in addition to the original clip with the markers. You can rename the subclips, if you want. You can review the subclips, deleting any clips you might not need. If you do remove unused clips, you can use the Media Manager to remove your unused footage from disk, leaving the media for your remaining subclips alone.

  • Can I use home videos on a DVD?

I recently transferred a couple home videos from VCR to DVD. I would like to make a film on my mac and just wondered if it was possible. If not, could some one let me know an alternative way to do this?
Not exactly sure what your question is here.
If you mean can you extract your own content from a homemade DVD and edit it in iMovie '08, then the answer is yes. Basically it is just a process of converting the the "muxed" MPEG-2 (VOB) files to an editable compression format. Since the content is yours to do with as you please and, if "homemade," is not copy protected, then there are several possible work flows here depending on the quality you wish to achieve/retain, your willingness to possibly invest in additional software, and the specific compression format in which you wish to edit.
    1) The easiest, cheapest, fastest, but most limited way to go would be iSquint. It is a free application which will convert a homemade DVD VOB title set (i.e., a non-zero set of VOB files constituting a DVD movie) to either MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC files which can be edited in iMovie '08. The application is very easy to use and will create useable files in its default "TV" mode but output can usually be improved if you are willing to make some user adjustments to the settings. It's major drawback is limiting you to only two possible outputs for editing.
    2) At the other end of the scale is MPEG Streamclip. This application is also free but would require you to purchase the QT MPEG-2 Playback QT component ($20) from Apple. Its major advantage is that it will allow you to export your VOB files to any iMovie '08 compatible compression format. It also has a number of built-in elementary editing and enhancement options that may make it more difficult to use.
    3) In between, there are a number of other applications that would also work to include HandBrake (free), FFmpegX (donation-ware), Visual Hub (pay-ware), MPEG2Works (pay-ware and requires the $20 MPEG-2 component), etc. Some are as easy as iSguint but take longer and others are more difficult to use than MPEG Streamclip. So use whichever best suits your needs, work flow, and seems friendliest to you.
    4) Another approach would be to image the DVD content in such a manner that iMovie '08 itself will convert the content to an edit compatible content. Since there are many ways to attempt this and some either no longer work or may be trapped on in the future so they won't work, I personally don't use this approach. But, once again, the choice is yours here.

  • Help with converting WMV files to quicktime movies for video ipod.

Is there a way to convert my movies that play with the windows media player to a movie file that Quicktime Pro can use to export to my video ipod?
I am running windows xp, can anyone help??

File size is dicated by the bitrate of the file. From my review of (thousands) of WMV files there appears to be some compression in the WMV format that is not reapplied when save as to a MOV container is performed. You can see in get info the WMV file say 100MB has maybe 125-150MB of data when it is fully loaded in Quicktime.
Thus save as does not apply the WMV compression the same as native WMV is all I can assume and the new QT file (MOV container) is bigger than the source file is.
Exporting to any new QT format (say H264) is going to make a file that is dependent on the new QT bitrate you select but if it is higher than the bitrate shown in the Get Info Inspector box when the original WMV has been opened it will be bigger without a doubt. So if you have a 3Mb/sec WMV file that you export to 700 kb/sec for iPod basic it should be 1/4 of the size. Use 5Mb/sec fo Apple TV it should be 2/3 larger.
I rarely use QT Pro to export and when I do I don't use default settings. I prefer MPEG Streamclip which offers easier control of variables, batch file processing, deinterlacing and other things and it is free.

  • I have a home video on a DVD that i would like to put into iMovie. Any help??

is it possible to move the content of a video from DVD Video Recorder (DVD Player) over to iMovie?

    Hi
Depends on how - DVD Video Recorder - makes this DVD
Most probably a sort of .mpeg2 code as on standard DVDs. If You open the DVD on DeskTop/Finder - then You should find two folders
Audio_TS (empty - and must be so)
Video_TS (lot's of .vob and .bup files)
    Then read on
    DVD back for future editing
    A. don't put a mini DVD into Your Mac unless it’s a tray-loaded DVD burner/reader
    B. iMovie’08 prob. 09 can import from DVD (homemade without copy-protection)
    C. I prefer one of these two ways
    • Copy to miniDV tape from set-top DVD-player --> Camera -or-
    • Roxio Toast™ - Can back convert to streamingDV for iMovie or FinalCut
    D. Read what Karsten collected.

DVDs are in a so-called delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and

    • Cinematize >60$
    • Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    • Toast 6/7/8/9/10/11 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    • connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
    • Drop2DV (free) a free tool claiming to convert DVDs into dv-stream...
    • Use iSquint for your conversions . www.iSquint.org

  • How can i use a wmv file in FCP ... urgent  !!

    Hello
I created a PowerPoint presentation (45 minutes with full animations recorded) (on my PC laptop) that I now have to add audio to.
I saved it as a video (of course, it's .wmv format) and was going to add the audio and adjust the bits in Final Cut, but it won't recognize the file.
Tried to use imovie to make a .mov , but same problems.
Is there a conversion software that I could use to convert the wmv to a FCP recognizable file?
Help needed quickly as this is for a promo  dvd that i need for next week ... i thought i was going well ontrack until i hit this snag!
    thanks muchly
    Elizabeth

    Thank you
Switch is just for audio, but i searched their home and found Prism, their video converter. It worked well and i've imported the .mov it created into fcp .... gonna take a few hours to render it, but it' seems like a go. Then I can work on syncing the audio clips to it.
after I posted the first, i thought that i could possibly just open the power point in my Mac's powerpoint, which it did. but when i exported that one as a video, the animations were out of sync , or not there, and the quality of the image wasn't good. ... so then i found prism (the free version) and used it.
    Thanks for the tip!

  • Using a text file to make a query

Hello and sorry to disturb.. but as a newbie I hope to find solution to my problem...
My users produce a text file that contains for each line an id (primary key).
My goal is to let them easily use that file as a part of a query that I define. e.g. they provide that list and the interface outputs the values related to those ids.
I read that is easy to import a file but I haven't understood how I can transform it's content in a query. Or maybe I can create a text field where the user can paste this list but I think that there's the limit of 30kb ...
Thanks in advance for any answer!
    Simone

    Thanks Vikas for your answer,
I already looked on the forum searching for all those sub-topics. The only thing that I'm not yet capable is to parse the blob content.. I'm lookin into the forum but I'm not finding what I need.. if you could gently give me the link to the right discussion I'd really apprecciate.
    Thanks in advance

  • Download Helper - How to download & save .wmv files WITHOUT the video being downloaded playing on screen?

    Windows 7 Pro
    Latest Version of Firefox
    Latest Version of Download Helper
Windows Media Player and VLC are installed
When I download a video file (typically .wmv) the video begins playing on the monitor screen prior to my being able to use Download Helper to download the video and save to the hard drive. This typically results in the video stopping and playing and stopping throughout the download process because of the download speed available. There is never any issue with the final download on the hard drive.
Today I installed latest version of Firefox and Download Helper on another computer.
    Windows 7
    Latest Version of Firefox
    Latest Version of Download Helper
Windows Media Player (only) is installed
Downloaded the same .wmv file downloaded above and the video did NOT begin playing on the monitor screen. Download Helper allowed me to download the file to the hard drive WITHOUT constantly listening to the video start/stop/start/stop etc.
What option (in which program) would allow the playing of the video to be toggled on or off while downloading the .wmv file?
    Thank you.

Once the download has started, you can go to another web page. The
download should be a separate function.

  • Premiere only shows audio when importing a .wmv file

I have a 30 sec spot that is a .wmv file. It plays normally in Windows Media Player, plays normally in Bridge, but when I import it into Premiere CS6, it shows it in the project file as a .wmv, but when I pull it onto the timeline or put it into the source window, all I see is an audio file.  What happened to the video? Why won't it import also, I know it's there because it plays outside of Premiere just fine. PPro is supposed to import wmv files but where's the video?

Buy the latest version of Nero, import the problem file to a DVD or Blu-Ray project then use the Export function. I have been amazed many times how many file types I cannot import to Premiere or Media Encoder that Nero can import and convert to something Premiere can work with.
Just yesterday I was given a 720P wmv file where Premiere gave me a perpetual "Media Pending" image for the video. Media Encoder likewise gave me a "Rendering" message that lasted forever. Nero allowed me to import the file then export as an AVCHD file with the m2ts extension which Premiere can handle.

  • Convert & burn .avi & .wmv files to DVD?

As a relative Mac newbie, I would like to know how to convert .avi & .wmv files that are on my hard drive to DVD-burnable format. I generally use Toast Titanium 6.0.7 for all disc burning. An acquaintance suggested that I use iMovie for this purpose, but -- excuse my ignorance -- how exactly and in a simple way do I do it (go from having .avi and/or .wmv files on my hard drive to being able to actually and successfully burn them to DVD)?
Trying to add the files to Toast's "DVD Video" pre-DVD-burn setting just brings up black screen stills to represent the file, leading me to believe there is a problem, because other video files I've burned in the past have loaded into Toast with a video still frame grab before burning.
Windows seems to be able to perform this function easily, but could anyone help with simple, direct info on how to do it with Mac Tiger?..
Is this all a codec issue? If so, why should it be (on an otherwise tech-savvy and adaptable Apple OS) and how do I rectify it in a straightforward and simple manner?
I should add that I can view .avi files on my Mac by using VLC Media Player, and the .wmv files by using Windows Media Player for Mac, but I want to be able to convert these files to DVD-burnable format, so I can view them on a television set-top DVD player...
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Here's a couple more suggestions that I use .Not so elegent but they work.
    1. I use a VGA to TV converter box which plugs in to the VGA connection on the computer & gives S video or composite out & then plugin to the dv in from the camera. Then import to imovie for any editing & then burn away !Quick & dirty & it works eveytime. Of course you must have a vga connection at the back of your computer.
    2. On the PC side I use Cyberlink Power Director. This accepts .wmv files & will convert to other formats & also send to mini dv camera tape if I want to burn to standalone DVD burner.

  • Video converting and burning home videos

Do anyone know the best program to convert my sonyhandycam video files and then what software I should use to burn these home videos onto a DVD? Sony's software is not compatible with Mac and iMovie won't recognize them! iDVD is not on my Mac (just purchased a few weeks ago)!!

The current Apple thinking is that the entire world has access to fast broadband and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that nothing could be further from the truth has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. That worked for some, but is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple. Also, you can complain bitterly here, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between using iCloud and burning DVDs:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD.
