Using a WRT54GS for LAN only, no internet conection

Hi, new guy on the board.
I bought a WRT54GS at garage sale, so have no manual or cd for it.
I had an older commercial grade ethernet router that I used for setting up a LAN in my home for playing SOCOM, Navy SEALS on 4 different PS2s, each with their own tv. Worked great for a while, but then the commercial router died.
So, how can I set up this WRT54GS as a LAN only configuration to continue playing SOCOM like I used to?

Go to the Linksys support page and download the manual. There are also instructions for initial setup and for some router models there is even the setup wizard...

  • Mail server setup for LAN only (no Internet)

    Hello,
I need a mail server on the solaris machine to send and receive messages vie local area network only.
I got me a script for zfs scrub which sends the status via Email - however the machine is not connected to the internet.
    How can this be done?

Do you need this mail server just for the zfs scrub reports or for all e-mail? How are clients currently getting e-mail? If you already have a mail server inside the company, or if you already have hosted mail server for company e-mail, that should be sufficient.
If you do have an internal mail server, you should be able to set the DS parameter in sendmail.cf to specify the mail server. If you don't have an internal mail server, and you are all using external e-mail accounts, that should still work. By default, sendmail (if running) should be able to send e-mail outside the LAN. Sendmail uses DNS to locate the mail server for the recipient.
You can verify that dns is working on the client with nslookup or dig
    -> nslookup -query=mx gmail.com

I don't know if Solaris 11 Express has a companion CD. Solaris 10 does- and you can MAYBE install packages from it. On OpenSolaris there is the /usr/bin/updatemanager and /usr/bin/packagemanager commands. I suspect Solaris 11 Express also has the same. On OpenSolaris you could download packages from the OpenSolaris internet repository. It MAY include the IMAP server. (it does not for the OpenSolaris server I have.)
Alternately, you could look for it on sunfreeware.com ( the Solaris 10 packages might work) or compile it from source.

  • Any idea how you can safely use ONE computer for BOTH work and internet?

I'm planning to set up a small music project studio, built around a powerbook, that I will be sharing with a friend of mine. My friend is going to use the computer for music AND heavy internet use, but I will only use it for music work (off-line).
The thing is then that I am slightly worried about viruses, worms, spyware and similar unwanted stuff 'sneaking in' when the laptop is online. Even with firewall and anti-virus I guess there is always a risk.
Any idea if there is a way of keeping things completely separate?
How about if I had a bootable external hard drive for my work, with the Mac OS system on. Then when I'm working I could boot up from that drive (and use the computer off-line).
Maybe we could even remove the internal hard drive from the powerbook (?), and use the powerbook with two external hard drives instead: One bootable drive for me and another bootable drive for my studio partner (and then only connect one hard drive at the time).
Any idea if this would work well..? (I'm not sure if i.e. a virus could sneak in anyway, through the PRAM, L2 cache or the RAM or something similar) Or does anyone have any other suggestions...? Any ideas much appreciated. Thanks!

Not too much worry with Macs, but get an Ethernet Router, skip Wireless, use strong Passwords.

Excellent idea, especially if the heavy Net user doesn't have Admin rights.
One bootable drive for me and another bootable drive for my studio partner (and then only connect one hard drive at the time).
Just about foolproof! Just need 2 more drives for backup. Not sure why you'd want to remove the internal HD though.
No Viruses yet in OSX land, in fact the only Malware I know about requires you to install it for itself!
You'll be OK, that separate drives idea is pure genius.:-)

  • Using Time Capsule for backup only (no Wifi)

I posted a problem in another thread ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/22500623#22500623 ) about conflicts with my Time Capsule and Comcast modem. Apple concluded that there was a hardware problem with the Time Capsule. I got a new Time Capsule yesterday since I couldn't get a refund on the old one. Because configuring the Time Capsule to work as a Wifi station requires such a hassle and I don't get any extra benefits in terms of speed compared to my Comcast modem, I now have a very expensive hard drive for backup. I have some questions about using the TC for backup only since I am running into some problems with the backup.
    1. Does the TC have to be connected to my modem? It seems that when I do not connect the TC to the modem then I end up with the backup stalling after a few GB. Additionally, I end up with the flashing amber light.
    2. If I do connect the TC to the modem it backs up but my WIFI grinds to a halt (likely a product of all the data pushing from the computer through the modem and to the TC). I should add that in Airport Utility I have turned off WIFI on the TC so it should not be interfering with the WIFI. If I do need to connect to the modem are there any tips for not messing up WIFI speeds beyond just backing up when everyone is asleep? I assume not, but it can't hurt to ask.
    Thanks.

    2. My initial setup showe various errors so I hooked the TC into the modem via the WAN port and then I was able to set up (WIFI off, Bridge Mode OFF) and those errors went away.
If I understand your last post correctly, you say that I should do a reset on the TC. Re-configure but leave the errors because backups will still work. Then I can leave the TC unplugged until I need to use it (which has the added bonus of limited flashing amber light). Is this correct?
You are setting up the TC in the wrong mode.. it has to be in Router mode.. Not Bridge..
You are worrying too much about the flashing amber.. it is irrelevant. You can select ignore and it will go green.
    This setup is actually simple.
So here is what I suggest.
    1. Factory reset the TC.
Just to get started from a clean setup. And that will put the TC in the correct mode.. ie dhcp and nat.
    2. Plug it by ethernet LAN TC to computer. On the computer no other connection.. turn off wireless.
    3. Just change the name of the TC to something short as it helps.. eg TCGen5
    And turn the wireless off.
And ignore all the other problems.
    4. Now setup TM.. I would also start clean.. do a fresh TM setup .. see A4 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    5. Run the backup. Maybe even erase the TC before you start so you are really doing a fresh clean backup.
The very first backup will start quickly and drop to very slow speed as there are heaps of very small files in the system.. these take a long time to process.. but as it proceeds it will speed up. Overall you should still average 50GB/hr.
    6. Once you complete the first backup, later ones should be fine.. but do not expect them to work as well as when you do it hourly.. it does need to do a lot more work to figure out where the TM backup is up to.
I would like to get you to have another crack at using the TC properly in the network. When you are over the pain of all this.. and perhaps when apple releases a decent firmware update you can go back to it.. but I have another suggestion for setup. Get the above working first so you have a good first backup of all your computers.

  • "Use cellular data for" is only showing a few apps

    Hello,
I just got a new 5S.  I have installed and used maybe 15 or so apps, but when I go to
Settings -> Cellular -> "Use cellular data for"
it only shows 5 apps: Calendar, FaceTime, Find iPhone, Passbook, & Skype.
I would like to see all the apps so that I can control what is using cellular data.  When I read other posts online, it seems like this should show all apps.  Does anybody have any idea why I only see a few apps here or what I can do to display all apps?
    Thanks for any help!

This troubleshooting guide helped me. Had to try up to step 7...

    Hello Sophie59
You should be able to see two different tabs when setting up the email if you go to Other > Add Mail Account. Once you enter in the email address and password, you should be at the next screen to provide more details about the email as far as incoming and outgoing servers and at the top there will be a blue section to add it in as a POP or IMAP email account. Check out the article below for further troubleshooting and emails setup options.

  • He "seller" resets the iPad for me to use, do I have to get it re-activated or purchase a contract/service plan if I ONLY ever plan to use the iPad for Wifi Only???

Question to all the pros..I'm looking to purchase an iPad 4g second hand. Once the "seller" resets the iPad for me to use, do I have to get it re-activated or purchase a contract/service plan if I ONLY ever plan to use the iPad for Wifi Only???

No you don't need a service plan to use wifi. Take special precautions to make sure the seller is the owner. Be sure all their information has been removed properly. If it were me I wouldn't give the person the money until the iPad is registered in my name. I've read too many horror stories of people buying iPads they'll never be able to use because someone else's ID was still on it.

  • How do I use Time Capsule for backup only over an existing network (or ethernet)

Ok, first, I have been using Mac now for about 2 years and every little thing I do is much harder than advertised. I have yet to experience the mythical ease of Apple products.
With that said, I was talked into buying this 2TB Time Capsule. Which right now seems to serve nicely as a very expensive paper weight.
Here's what I am trying to do. I was told I could use this as a wireless backup. I have a cable modem and router in my house. I do not want to insert Time Capsule as the router. I would like to either hook it up to the existing network or have it just wireless. Whatever works best for backup use.
I set the time capsule up to connect to an existing network. Which it did. Green light is on.
When I select it as a backup drive in Time Machine, it works. However it does not back up. It will say Waiting to Backup and do nothing. If I select Back Up Now on Time Machine, it says it cannot find the disk.
Is it possibly because I had used another backup disk prior and kept it? When I set the Time Capsule I selected to use both.
I am at a loss. I am not a techie. And there are more options of use than the instructions cover.

The problem is your method of connection I suspect.
The TC was always designed to plug into the main router. It does not have to be in the same room but it has to be ethernet connected.
Please post a few screenshots of the setup.. that makes it so much easier for me to work through it with you.
Posting screenshots here is easy.. press the little camera and select the shot from finder.
What I need is the summary page from your airport utility.. ie this one.
Then click on edit button which I have highlighted and show me the tabs for Internet, Network and wireless. eg this is the internet. (show me the whole thing.. I have cut it off to keep it small).
We can then work through the issues.

  • Iphone 5 - "use cellular data for" option only shows Facetime and Passbook

I have an iphone 5 and I am trying to manage my cellular data usage,
When I go into Settings - Cellular and I look at the "use cellular data for" option, there are only 2 apps on the list Facetime and Passbook.
I have seen other posts online that show a long list of apps that you can toggle Cellular data on and off.
How can I see a longer list of apps.

In Settings/General/Restrictions if you tap on Cellular Data Use there should be 2 options: Allow Changes or Don't Allow Changes. If you don't see these options is that where you see "Cellular data is turned off for 'Setting'?
Do you have a corporate MS Exchange email account on your phone? If so your administrator may have added an override on this setting.

  • Using 3G phone for voice only

After purchasing my beloved iPhone 4, I would like to pass my old 3G phone to my wife, who uses voice only, no data. AT&T says the iPhone 3G will not work properly without a data plan and cannot be used for voice only service. Is AT&T correct? Is there another solution?

AT&T correct? Is there another solution?
Yes. AT&T requires a data plan for ALL iphones on their network. There is no other solution, if you want to use the phone on AT&T's network. If you try and use the phone without a data plan attached, they will catch you & bill accordingly for a data plan. They can tell what type of phone is being used from the IMEI number. The phone will work just fine without a data plan & data turned off, however.

  • Location/directory used by JRE, for saving the temporary Internet files

    Hello sir,
I am working on a project( in JavaFX ) which takes the URL of a streaming FLV video( eg: http://sun.edgeboss.net/download/sun/media/1460825906/1460825906_11810873001_09c01923-00.flv ) as input and plays it in Media Player component.
I have successfully played the streaming video, by taking the aid of sample project, Media Box( http://javafx.com/samples/MediaBox/ ).
Now I am interested in knowing the location/directory, where these temporary Internet files will be downloaded to. Please let me know, the location/directory used by JRE( on both Windows and Linux ) for saving the temporary Internet files. Also let me know, if there is any possibility of changing that location/directory.
Thanks for any help, in advance.

You should avoid posting the same message multiple times...
By definition, streaming is supposed to play the received movie data on the fly, without intermediary file. Now, it depends on implementation, if that's real streaming, etc., so in practice there might be a temp file, or not.
But this temp location will be, obviously, highly dependent on the current system (even between WinXP and Win7, for example). You can find the answer experimentally, eg. on Windows by using Sysinternals' Process Monitor application (did that to find out where Storage files go), but it is brittle.
I doubt there is (an official) way to know that from within the JavaFX application...

  • Using Creative Cloud for teams on non internet workstations

    Hi Folks,
Am interested in running creative cloud on workstations that do not have internet access.
This is because of security issues and Non Disclosure Agreements.
Internet will only be enabled by ICT  admin for activation.
Is there a manual procedure to validate the software on a machine with admin provided Internet before the 30 days of use elapses?
    Kind Regards,
    AC_ICT

In a broadcast environment where all our edit bays are offline behind firewall.  I've installed all our CC team seats and only have to take them online every 90 - 120 days or when updates are needed. Any users that see the license countdown are told to contact IT and I take the machine online manually, check for updates and that seems to give CC Aps enough time to touch base with the license server. Take the users offline and back behind the firewall till the next countdown begins.  Rinse, Repeat as needed. This is the manual way, otherwise you need to set up a Adobe License or Update Server behind your firewall that you then deploy updates as needed.

  • Using WIFI to connect LAN only = continuous disconnects

    Hi everyone,
My app needs to use LAN (no internet) connection via wifi, but still needs to access internet via 3G. The problem is, if I have no default router in wifi settings, the system disconnects then reconnects wifi continuously. Any solution to this problem?

Try this and see if it works
Under settings>connections>wi-fi, press your 'wi-fi', then press settings again to bring up the advanced menu, select 'advanced', and uncheck 'AutoNetwork Switch'.

  • Using the iMac for display only?

I bought an iMac in 2008. I use it for the majority of my computing needs, and for the most part is serves my purposes for everything. One thing I would like though is more gaming power.
I have a PC tower that is not connected to anything at the moment and needs a little hardware work which I will do myself.
Since the iMac is not user upgradable, and the video/graphics card is not upgradable at all, I was curious if I was able to connect the PC tower to the iMac's screen and use it as a display for a gaming computer and disconnect the tower for regular computing.
While I'm asking, is there any external way to improve the graphics card for gaming that anyone is aware of?

...Its too bad the graphics card is not upgradeable. I'm also going to try and find out if there is some sort of external way to increase performance....
This is the inherent issue with all "all-in-ones", both laptops and desktops, both PCs and Macs. For the most part, they are not upgradable. You can replace HD and RAM, but pretty much everything else "is what it is" and upgrades are "external only." Don't hold your breath that you'll find any way to increase performance (video or CPU.)
In the long run, you may want to consider just selling the iMac and get a new Mac. A Mini or Mac Pro, both of which do not have built-in monitors so would require you to get a monitor anyway, then you could KVM it with the PC. (I have my Mini KVMed with a Dell Poweredge server, which is sitting under my desk.) Alternatively, the new 27" iMac does allow for video input so it could be used as a monitor for the PC.

  • Use external display for movies only

    Hi,
I have a 22" external display which I like to use for watching DVDs only. Mirroring is not an option for me as this limits the display to a lower resolution. How can I configure my Mac so that whenever I insert a DVD (or start FrontRow) this will come up on the external display and all the rest remains on the internal display?
When I put my MacBook to sleep and wake it up with my remote it works. However the internal display remains switched off and as the external diisplay is not right beside my Mac it makes me kind of blind.
    Any ideas?
    THANKS

    hey there KinoViel,
the 1st time i put a DVD into my iMac i moved the DVD player window from it to my TV. since it is a mostly "permanent" connection every time i put in a DVD & select that input on my TV to watch it, that is where the DVD window shows up(on my TV). the Apple Remote only works w/ the Mac so you can just aim the remote @ the MacBook to use Front Row. my iMac lives next to my seating position so i don't know the keyboard commands for Front Row.... sorry. try a search for Front Row keyboard shortcuts. & i think there's a list of keyboard shortcuts in Finder Help.
when i was using my MacBook w/ my big TV because it was taken in & out of my entertainment system, i had to go through the previously outlined steps every time because the Mac had to find & ID the TV. sometimes i use my MacBook w/ my BR TV & when i connect it, i have to do the steps for the Mac to find & ID the TV.
don't be aplogize for having a PC @ work lots of folks do, be thankful/happy you can come home to the joy your Mac brings you. i'm fortunate that i am self-employed & my Macs do double duty 'cause i do some work @ home, so they're for work & play.
    good luck.
