Using .aac or mp3 files as a ringtone on an E71

Just got my new E71 and refuse to pay a subscription for one ringtone and have read the compatibility issues of trying to convert a tune bought on nokia music.
So is it possible to upload files from iTunes to my phone and then use them as a ringtone?
If so, how, please.

OK, I'll answer this one myself as I've just managed to do it by mistake!
I connected the USB Data Cable, selected "Mass Storage" but the phone just said "USB connection in progress" in the "Gallery", unfortunately this message didn't disappear before I dragged and dropped the file out of iTunes on to the phone icon.
I checked the file was in the folder and then dismounted the phone icon in the normal way.
However, much to my concern the message on the phone still read "USB connection in progress", even when I disconnected the data cable!  The only way I could get this message to go was to turn the phone off.
When I turned it back on again and went back into "Gallery", I got an error message saying "Repairing corrupted library" but the file (.m4a) was sitting there once the error message had gone.
I just went into "Tones", found it in the dropdown, selected it as the ringtone and much to my surprise, it now works!
A bit worried about the pink bit above mind.
Have I done any damage? What should have I done? Why didn't the message "USB connection in progress" disappear?
Any comments would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

  • Use MP3 file as personalized ringtone

    I would like to assigne a specific MP3 file as a ringtone for a specific caller. Within Contacts, I can assign a specific ringtone to that contact, however, it only seems to be looking at a fixed (hidden) folder with some canned ACC/MIDI ringtones therein. I can use the built-in recorder to create an AMR file - which lands in the that same (hidden?) folder - and then I can use that as a ringtone for that contact. However, I'm not able to select a specific MP3 file from my music store.
    I know within the music player you can assign a particular song as the ringtone for the current profile. HOwever, that's not what I want to do. I want to assigne a specific MP3 as a ringtone for a specific contact. I have done this on other Nokia devices, but am stumped how it is to be affected on the N91. Any help out there?
    Jim

    If it's similar to the N70, it needs to be in the right folder, which shouldn't be hidden...
    There's two folders on both the memory card, and Phone memory - MyMusic and Sounds - try putting the tracks you want as ringtones in there, then selecting them from Contacts...
    If it doesn't work in the same way, sorry

  • Can I use my own sound files as contact ringtones?

    Can I use my own sound files as contact ringtones?

    yes - you can use GarageBand for this.
    Open GarageBand
    Create a new project
    Insert the song file from iTunes. (Go into the Finder, select ~/User/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library and find the song you want.)
    Drag that song into Garageband.
    in Garageband - click the Share menu, and Send Ringtone to iTunes.
    You will then have to select which 40 second portion of the song you want. It will create it, and send it to iTunes automatically.
    In iTunes
    Select Preferences. Click on the General tab, and make sure that Ringtones has a checkmark beside it so that you see it in the list on iTunes.
    When you hook up your iPhone, you will be able to select the ringtone(s) you want to sync.

  • How Do I Use an External MP3 file Without Embedding it? (AS2)

    I am using Adobe Flash CS6 with ActionScript 2.0.
    I have compiled my project, and due the collection of embedded mp3 files (background music) I am using on various locations, my published swf file is over 12MB.
    To reduce the size, I placed all the mp3 fiels in the same folder as the swf file and removed all reference to them from the project.
    I then added this code to frame #1
    import flash.events.Event;
    import flash.media.Sound;
    import flash.net.URLRequest;
    var CreditsMusic:URLRequest = new URLRequest("NineWalkers.mp3");
    var s:Sound = new Sound(CreditsMusic);
    CreditsMusic.setVolume(50);
    CreditsMusic.start(0,1);
    Obviously, this is not working (I would not be posting here if it was).
    What am I doing wrong?

    I haven't look into the help documents (you can), but I see you mixing up AS2 and AS3 code, along with treating a URLRequest (AS3) as if it is a Sound object....
         CreditsMusic.setVolume(50);
         CreditsMusic.start(0,1);
    If you want to work with the Sound class in AS2 open the help documents and see what properties and methods are available for the Sound class and work things out from there.  If you search Google using "AS2 Sound loadSound" you might get some good info as well.

  • ITunes 7.0.2 crashes any time I try to use/add/import mp3 files

    Hi,
    Since upgrading to iTunes 7.0.1, several of the mp3 files in my library were causing iTunes to crash when I tried to play them. I upgraded to iTunes 7.0.2 last week, and yesterday I tried to add a folder containing several mp3s to my library. As the mp3s were being processed, iTunes 'encountered a problem' and needed to close.
    Since then, I have been unable to use iTunes, as it crashes as soon as I open it, displaying the same message. I tried re-installing iTunes and Quicktime, and recreating my music library, but the problem does not go away. Any time I try to play/add/import any mp3 or mp3-associated file (mp3 songs, folders including mp3s, and even my XML library file, which I have tried to re-import), the same thing happens.
    I'm just wondering why iTunes seems to react in such a way to EVERY mp3 that I have, and how I can restore my library to the state it was in before, with my playlists etc, without iTunes crashing again?
    If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it!

  • Convert AAC into mp3 files?

    Hi all my music is in i tunes and I want to put some onto a 2 gb memory stick so that I can play it in my cay unfortuantly it only accepts MP3 files does any one know how I convert them .
    Many Thanks

    Yes. When you convert them to MP3s the original AAC versions will still be in your library as well.  Anyways, once they have been converrted, locate these newly converted tracks on your HD and copy them over to the memory stick.

  • Converting aac or mp3 to "media kind" podcast doesn't appear in iphone 4

    Hello. I finally discovered you can convert an aac or mp3 file to media kind choosing podcasting which is great for bookmarking audio etc. I hate having to start over form a long audio file listening back. Coverting to podcast was a great solution. Now my problem is synching to my iphone 4 and making sure podcast synch is checked off, etc i see nothing in my podcast director on the phone, it says its empy, but if i go to artist and search for the name it appears under podcasts! Is this some sort of glitch with iphone 4 or new itunes? Anyone else have this problem? If i got back and convert all to "audiobooks" instead of podcasts and synch phone they appear correct in the audiobook section of the phone. I'd rather use the podcast directory but this will work for now. Thoughts? Thanks

    The problem :
    It's quite simple, let’s expose with a couple of cases.
    Case 1: I use the MP3 file as the soundtrack (in the soundtrack “lane”), I export the clip. Everything is super, including audio.
    Case 2: I use the AAC file as the soundtrack. I export the clip. The audio skips beats at irregular times.
    Case 3 : I use both the MP3 and AAC file as the soundtrack. I export the clip. The audio skips beats at irregular times.
    As soon as I put an AAC file in there, the audio skipping begins. The video is fine, high quality all the way.
    What I checked :
    - The AAC file sounds perfect in every other audio program prior to encoding. The sound file is not the cause. I tried using multiple AAC and MP3 files, the problem is constant.
    - I am aware of the limits of the hardware and I know for SURE I’m not hitting them. This is not hardware related.
    - Every driver and every software is up to date.
    What’s left :
    Apart from transcoding my AAC files to MP3 every time I want to use them in movies, any idea?

    Actually, the AAC is going to be more dependent on your I/O sub-system, than on your CPU. Please give us the details of your I/O, i.e. your HDD's, their size, speed, controller type and how you have the HDD's allocated.
    Also, for AAC, I use Audacity to convert to PCM/WAV 48KHz 16-bit. Even the pro audio-editing program, Audition, does not like AAC files.
    Highly-compressed Audio formats/CODEC's are often highly problematic, and most users find that converting to PCM/WAV is by far, the best way to go. The quality loss will NOT be regained, but the ease of editing will be greatly improved.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Why not "normal"-sized mp3 files when ripping CDs?

    hello,
    have any of you experienced that the CD tracks conversion to mp3 format is resulting in very large files? a normal CD is converted into 700-800 MB files, which is absolutely crazy..!! i have defaulted the file format to mp3 in iTunes, so what more can i do??
    i have the latest version of iTunes, using Win 2000.
    Any suggestions would be highly appreciated..
    / Richard
    Dell   Windows 2000

    For the iTunes MP3 encoder, the Good Quality setting is 128 kbps, the High Quality setting is 160 kbps and the Higher Quality setting is 192 kbps.
    AAC-encoded files sound as good as or better than MP3 files encoded at the same or even a higher bit rate. A 128 Kbps AAC file should sound as good as or better than a 160 Kbps MP3 file. Because the bit rate is lower, the AAC file will also be smaller than the MP3 file. AAC files allow you to store the most music on your hard disk or iPod. The High Quality AAC setting creates files that are usually less than 1 MB for each minute of music. The High Quality MP3 setting creates files that are about 1 MB in size for each minute of music.
    The AIFF and WAV encoders do not compress the songs. AIFF and WAV are very high quality files that are several times larger than AAC or MP3 files and take up a large amount of hard disk space (about 650 MB per CD or 10 MB per minute of music).
    How are you copying CD tracks to the iTunes library?

  • Embedding MP3 files into dreamweaver webpage

    I've embedded mp3 files into my webpage, but every time someone opens the page, they are prompted to either open or save the file.  I want the viewer to be able to play the song using the embedded player, without the prompt.

    Embedded players are very old school.  And it won't work for many since they need a player and appropriate browser plugins installed on their end.  The modern approach is HTML5 <audio> which is widely supported by all browsers, including mobile and tablets.  For an example of HTML5 audio, copy and paste this code into a new, blank document.

  • Unable to decode and import the selected wav/mp3 file

    I am trying to import mp3's into a Captivate 3 presentation
    but keep getting this error "Unable to decode and import the
    selected wav/mp3 file." I am using the same mp3 files that I have
    used many times with projects in Cap1 and Cap2. I have converted
    the files to wav's and tried but I'm still getting the same
    message. I have a deadline and I'm stumped.
    Any ideas?

    Hi DianaUNC
    Interesting. I've seen it happen with WAV files but not MP3.
    Do you still have Captivate 2 around? If so, do these successfully
    import into Captivate 2? One thought was that you might pop them
    into something like Audacity and save them out again. Perhaps
    something is amiss with the encoding used.
    Or you might try the trick of opening them in Windows Sound
    Recorder and saving them out of that in a different format. I know
    that works with one particular WAV file I have.
    Cheers... Rick

  • How can I have iTunes find its newly converted mp3 files?

    Hi,
    I am not a power user. I have a playlist that is apparently composed of different file formats. So when I tried to burn them to a CD it gave me 92 songs that could not be burned as an mp3. I then chose to convert them to mp3. It apparently did it because I looked for the files in finder and saw the mp3 versions.
    How can I now have iTunes use THOSE new mp3 files for burning? There must be a simple way to do that.
    Thanks,
    Jorge

    Thanks Jim,
    Is there any way to list them by "type"? I made the playlist from several playlists and I am sure that some of the offending songs are from several of those playlists.
    I tried tricking iTunes into writing them onto a cd by just dumping the new MP3 duplicates into the same list and then telling it to burn. I then expected it to tell me the same 92 songs could not be written and planned to just tell it to skip those since now had them in as MP3s but it is now telling me that it will require more than one CD. Is that because the files are now bigger or because it is counting the 92 files that it will not be writing anyway?
    Thanks,
    Jorge

    How do I convert an MP3 file to use it as a ringtone on my iPhone 3G?

    Everybody's wrong wrong wrong. You don't need garageband. Select the song, go to info. You need to select a start and stop time for the song that can't be any longer than 40 seconds in length. Then in advanced mode you convert the song to acc. once done locate the file on the computer. it should end in .m4a . Change the a to an r so it reads .m4r Drag the file to the desktop, double click and it ends up in ringtones folder.

  • Burning mp3 cds using AAC files

    How can I burn mp3 cds using AAC files from iTunes?

    You can't burn MP3 CDs from MP4 (AAC) files. You have to convert the AAC files in in iTunes to MP3 before you can burn them to MP3 disc.
    You can use iTunes to convert any copy protection free songs in your library another format. When you convert a song in iTunes it will be converted to the format that you have set to import your CDs in. Converting creates a second copy of the song in the format you have chosen which gives you the opportunity to either keep or delete the original. If you are using iTunes 8 go to iTunes>Preferences>General and click on Import Settings, change your option to MP3 for example. Go back to your library and highlight the songs you want to convert and go to the Advanced menu at the top of your iTunes window and choose "Create MP3 version": iTunes: How to convert a song to a different file format
    One exception to this are standard copy protected songs (if you haven't upgraded to iTunes Plus versions) purchased from the iTunes Music Store which can't be directly converted due to the DRM (Digital Rights Management) copy protection. However you can burn these to an Audio CD which will work like any regular CD.
