Using adjustment layers to only one layer

I know how to use an adjustment layer - it goes directly over the layer I'm editing and I'm able to edit the colour (such as hue etc). The trouble is, anything below that adjustment layer then gets affected. Is there any way I am able to make this adjustment layer exclusive to a partuclar layer?
Ideally then in that sitation I'd be able to have a bitmap layer using a vector mask (for example, a cut out tree) and then using an adjustment layer to change the colour of the tree.
Hope I've explained it well enough, it's a bit confusing.
Thanks.

I'm new to CS5, but find that if I create an adjustment layer from the "Adjustments" window I automatically get the chain link icon in the layers window showing the two layers linked, then the adjustment only affects the layer below.   However, if you use Layer|New Adjustment Layer|Levels (for example) then you have the option to use previous layer as a clipping mask if you tick that box it is linked just to the previous layer, left unchecked it affects all layers below.

  • Colorize only one layer

    I'm using Trapcode Particular to generate an effect on to[ of a video and use a colorize adjustment layer to colorize the effect. Problem is that this also colorizes the video which is below the effect so how can I apply it only to the effect and leave the colors of the video unchanged?
    thanks!

    I can't do that because it won't change the color. Only works with an adjustment layer. Pre-Compose is useless since that removes the whole effect all together. So what now??
    I really don't know what you are talking about. Applying an adjustment layer effectively treats the output from Particular as a 2D layer, which is no different what happens under normal circumstances if you apply the effect directly - to the result buffer of the previous effect/ operation. You are trying to see distinction where there is none. Some effects ignore Alpha and such, but that's a whole different matter. If 3D interaction is a concern, you wouldn't use adjustment layers at all as it breaks 3D rendering order, resulting in incorrect overlaps. So by all means, either you are doing something fundamentally wrong or just fail to give us a clear impression of what it actualyl is you are trying to do, so please elaborate, provide a screenshot, link to a reference clip or something like that.

  • Applying feathering to only one layer

    Hi,
    I'm created a two-part ad.  One of the two parts (on two different layers) has a background image that I would like only the center to show up and the rest I'd like to whiten (about 90% opacity, leaving 10% of the background image visible) using feathering, as described in Feather Selections In Photoshop With Quick Mask
    So, does anyone know how to apply such feathering on only one layer?
    Thanks!
    -Ron

    Create a Layer Mask and apply Feather in the Properties Panel.
    Could you please post a screenshot with the Layers Panel visible?

  • Make only one layer of a video brighter

    Hi,
    I have few layers of videos, I am trying to make only one layer brighter.
    How can I do that?
    Thanks,

    Hmm, select the layer in the timeline, go to the effects menu, scroll down to color correction, in that menu choose brightness and contrast and adjust the brightness to your liking. It will only be applied to that layer.

  • I want to hide all layers other than one layer when I play swf at first.

    Hello. I am using Adobe Flash CS6 and AC2.
    Right now I am trying to hide all layers other than one layer. There are 3 layers on my fla file like this.
    Layer A
    Layer B
    Layer C
    I want to keep hiding  Layers B and C unless  I click a button that makes layer B and C visible.
    Layer A has a movie clip symbol, and it contains animation movie where a man  is running.
    And Layer B and C has a movie clip where people  are chasing the person who is running on Layer A.
    I mean, if I load swf file at first, there is only one person who is running, and when I click a button two people appears on a stage and they start to chase the person who is running on layer A.
    What kind of script should I use to make this setting? Please give me your advice.
    Thank you in advance.

    Here is a simplified version of the code, including the two lines needed to make them invisible at the start....
    b_mc._visible = false;
    c_mc._visible = false;
    b_btn.onRelease = function():Void{
              b_mc._visible = !b_mc._visible;
    c_btn.onRelease = function():Void{
             c_mc._visible = !c_mc._visible;
    What that version of the coding does is simply tell the object to acquire the opposite ( ! ) value of the current _visible property.
    Notice also that I have removed the "_root " references inm the code.  You should not make a habit of using it unnecessarily.  If the code is in the main timeline already (the _root), there is no need to target it, and doing so can lead to problems if you ever need to load this file into another.  If that code is not in the _root timeline then it is okay to use _root, though using "_parent " references can be safer for the same reason.
    The way you had the code written is not wrong, but it was excessive in that you do not have to test the condition twice like you did, if it is not true then it has to be false....
    if(c_mc._visible){
          c_mc._visible = false;
    } else {
          c_mc._visible = true;

  • Replace one channel by another on only one layer, leaving the others intact?

    Hello. In a CMYK image, I need to turn on only one layer one channel completely into another, while the others remain intact. The M channel (the M on that layer) contains information, but I can't print M in this place. I want to change it into an equal amount of K (or into C, in the present case, or even into a mixture of the two). I know how to do this to an entire image (change into greyscale, duotone or whatever may apply). But since I need this to apply to only one (or a selection of) layer(s), leaving all others intact, this is not an option here. I'm sure there's a way to achive this, but I can't find it. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    hello, thanks for your replies. As far as I understand, Channel Mixer (i.e., an Adjustment Layer containing a Channel Mixer applied to the layer in question) allows me to reduce one channel to zero,
    You are completely correct up to here...
    Then choose K as the desired output channel at the top of the palette and slide the M (source) slider to the desired value.  You can choose more output channels by going to each output channel in turn.
    The way it works is slightly confusing at first, but in a nutshell, you choose your output channel first, then mixture of sources.  Then move to another output channel and the sources will be at the default position for THAT output channel only.  Each channel has a set of source channels assigned to it.
    Default;  black output channel = 100% black source, 0% CMY
    So your example is black output = 100% black source plus 100% mag source (although I expect you are going to change black source to 0)
    AND magenta output = 0% Magenta 0% CYK source  (no mag output at all)

  • Why does a my layered Illustrator file open with only one layer, when opened by someone else?

    I am using CS6, as is the other user.  When they open the file in Illustrator all the artwork is on one layer, even though the original file has numerous layers, and opens with these layers when I open it even now.
    I have never come across this problem before in all the years I have used Illustrator and have had no joy when trying to search for this problem.
    Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated as it is confusing us!
    Thank you.

    Hi Mike, Wade & Larry,
    Thank you so much for your replies.
    Since I posted this issue, I was later informed that the other user is infact opening my files with CS5 and so a quick solution to this was saving it down to a previous version! Sorry for the confusion!
    This problem then becomes clear that it was a version error, but I have always had an error message come up if I try to open something that was created in a newer verion - is this no longer the case?
    I have been assured no pop up messages appear when opening the file which I find odd, and also that this layer compression has only just started happening even though many files have been back and forth previously.
    A little mystery! At least for now it is all working ok again
    Thank you all very much, greatly appreciated.

  • How can I edit separate layers in a psd file that was saved as only one layer?

    A designer provided me with a finished design and provided the psd, eps and ai files.  I'd like to make some minor changes in PS and would like to access individual layers - e.g. the text, background, etc.  When I open the psd file, however, it only has one layer.  how do I break out the original layers so that I can edit them?

    You can't. Once it's been flattened, you can't unflatten it. Talk to your designer: he/she will most likely have the unflattened version available.

  • Photoshop Elements12 - crashing when using Adjustment Layers. When opening the drop down menu there are 'boxes' for Black

    Does anyone else have problems using the Channel Mixer?
    This problem only started after the opening screen started to 'advertise' the advantages of moving to Cloud

    Which operating system are you using?
    Can you post a screenshot of what your seeing with the menus?
    All adjustment layers cause pse 12 to crash or only certain ones?
    The channel mixer adjustment layer isn't included with pse 12, so did you download an action for the channel mixer adjustment layer?
    I never use the welcome screen since it seems to cause so many problems with the elements versions that have it, but rather make a shortcut to the editor and/or organizer and use those instead.

  • Only one layer slow

    in cs6, working in black and white, 800mb file when flat, 3gb with layers.  One layer only is super slow.   it's not the largest layer. it's just a small image fragment.  but when I try smudging in that layer, computer freezes up and start to move super slow.   I tried copy and paste image content into new layer without improvement.   Slowness started happening after I stretched the layer.   I have since opened and closed this document many times. restarted computer.  duplicated layer into new file doesn't improve the matter either.

    We cross posted there.  I am not sure why being grouped would slow down a layer

  • Use Time Machine on ONLY one specific folder?

    I wish to use the Time Machine function to backup only one specific folder on my computer, the DROPBOX folder.
    How can I implement this and inform Time Machine of my choice?
    According to my first investigations, I only have the choice to select folders to EXCLUDE. This makes the setup of Time Machine unconfortable.
    Any advice?

    I agree with Jeffrey Jones2 above .
    Makes no sense to backup the dropbox folder alone, Dropbox It is "cloud storage" and has its own backup. Dropbox keeps a snapshot every time you save a file. You can preview and restore.
    If you go to the DROPBOX website you can view deleted file from the trash can icon (see below.)
    From there it is a matter of Restore the file. This would work for accidentally deleted files,  there maybe a 30day archive limit so read the small print for details.
    If it is imperative to your backup plan,  just drag and drop  your folder to any external storage device, just not the Time Machine HD/partition.

    I was using Google Chrome, but it seems they do not support Silverlight which Sky Go use. I was told that Firefox would work. It doesn't. The only one that works is Internet Explorer 11, which is very slooow. Why can't I use Firefox to view Sky Go?

    My Sky homepage. If I want to watch cricket say, it come up with ' sky go unavailable at this present moment'. If I log on to my IE 11, sky go works Ok. I have the Silverlight add-on or plug-in whatever you call it.
    Still no joy in Firefox.

  • Importing Illustrator layers into After effects, released to layers yet still one layer- ?

    Hi,
    Please bear with me as this should be a simple fix but the situation is hard to describe.
    I want to import layers from Illustrator into After Effects. I need the AI layers to have their "handles" (the four corners of the object) close in around the object and not spread out to the corners of the composition. I figured out how to do this: by "releasing layers to sequence" in Illustrator and then dragging them out of the group they were all in. Then I "import as composition - retain layer sizes" into AE. When I open the illustrator composition in AE, it's layers appear in AE as separate layers and with the layer 'handles' tight around the objects (all is well). BUT here is what I want to do: I have a layer/object in Illustrator that I "image traced" to make it black but it still has some white parts to it. So I drew two black rectangles around the white parts. But now when I bring it into AE, they all appear as separate layers (the image traced object and the two rectangles) but I want those black rectangles to be literally part of the object that I image traced. In photoshop this would be akin to "flattening the layers". I can do this in AI by "merging" the layers, but if I do that I am brought back to the problem of having AE put the layer's 'handles' to the corners of the comp window and not tight around the object. Frustrating!
    So I basically want to be able to paint over/cover up the white parts of my object without that creating new layers/objects.
    Thanks for reading!
    T

    I'm not clear what you are describing. Have you actually tried other import settings in AE? There is some bug with the retain layer size stuff, but other combinations might work. Also try exporting a PDF of the artwork and using that. This may work better.

  • How use two templantes with only one job ?

    I have two templantes and want use with only one job.I use with input one xml data file !!
    Is this possible?
    Please Help!!
    Thanks,
    Bruno.

    I probably missed this one earlier or felt that since it referenced an XML data file that I couldn't provide a definitive answer. I'm still not sure I can because we don't use XML for our data files, but use the "field nominated format".<br /><br />An expansion on Tammy's information:<br /><br />1. use a multi-step job with each <br />b task<br />calling a different MDF.<br />With this correction, it assumes that you either have access to set up the tasks/jobs yourself or can convince your Central administrator to do so. What happens is that TASKA is set up to reference FORMA and TASKB is set up to reference FORMB. Then a job is set up that causes both TASKA & TASKB to be ran. This will likely result in two different print files being sent to the printer. That may or may not be desirable, depending on whether your printer is set up to do something special between each print file (insert separator page, offset, whatever). Personally, I don't recommend this as it can quickly cause an unnecessary proliferation of tasks and jobs (we print 100's of differing form combinations with a single job definition).<br /><br />2. I can't really address this as I didn't even know that a single form could cause another to be called. I would expect that unless the "base" form (say it is FORMA) is to always print with the secondary form (FORMB) it is restrictive and has the potential to cause a proliferation of FORMA files for the various combinations that are to be printed. Maybe it is possible to have logic to check the value of a data field to control what forms get called.<br /><br />3. If you pass the XML file through a translation step and then through the transformation agent (maybe it can be done in a single step) this should work. It does add another step to the job as well as requiring learning to use the transformation agent. Depending on the combination of forms to be printed, you might need a different translation definition for each one, or at the very least have a data field that you can check the value of to determine what ^form commands to put in the output file.<br /><br />4. My recommendation is based on assuming an XML data file has the same capabilities as a field nominated file. Within a field nominated file are various print agent commands, including references to data as well as which forms are to be printed (and a whole bunch of other commands). An XML file should have the same features - I just can't say what they might look like. If your current data file has no "form" reference but depends on the job/task definition you might have to stick with option 1. If it has a "form" reference, then you just need to insert additional references for additional forms. Then it is up to the source of your data (or a transformation agent step) to specify which forms are to be printed. For example, in field nominated format, the file might look like:<br /><br />^job XYZ additional parameters<br />^form FORMA.MDF<br />^field FIELD1<br />data<br />^field FIELD2<br />data<br />^form FORMB.MDF<br />^field FIELD1<br />data<br />^field FIELD3<br />data<br /><br />or it might look like the way our files look:<br /><br />^job XYZ additional parameters<br />^global FIELD1<br />data<br />^global FIELD2<br />data<br />^global FIELD3<br />data<br />^form FORMA.MDF<br />^form FORMB.MDF<br /><br />As you can see in the first example, there is a reference to the form followed by all fields that go on it followed by another form reference with the fields that go on it. This particular method, using all "^field" commands for defining the data requires that data duplicated between the forms be duplicated. (Or, the use of some ^global commands like the following.)<br /><br />In the second example, all data is defined first using the "^global" command followed by all of the form references. This allows for the data to be defined only once. If there is something unique regarding a particular form the field can be ^global at the beginning or it can be ^field <br />b after<br />the ^form reference (similar to the first example).<br /><br />As previously mentioned, the XML file should have the same capability but in XML notation, something like the following (forgive me as it has been years since I took the XML class and don't use it in my daily work so the actual format could be wrong, not to mention the actual labels):<br /><br /><job name=XYZ,option=aaaa,option=bbbbbbb><br />  <form name=FORMA.MDF><br />    <field name=FIELD1, value=xxxxxxxxxxx></field><br />    <field name=FIELD2, value="xxxxxxxxxxxxx"></field><br />  </form><br />  <form name=FORMA.MDF><br />  etcetera<br /></job><br /><br />or maybe:<br /><br /><job name=XYZ,option=aaaa,option=bbbbbbb><br />  <global name=FIELD1,value=xxxxxxxxxxxx></global><br />  <global name=FIELD2,value="xxxxxxxxxxxxx"></global><br />  etcetera<br />  <form name=FORMA.MDF></form><br />  <form name=FORMB.MDF></form><br /></job><br /><br />or even (but I doubt it):<br /><br /><job name=XYZ,option=aaaa,option=bbbbbbb><br />  <globals><br />    name=FIELD1,value=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,<br />    name=FIELD2,value="xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"<br />  </globals><br />  <forms><br />    name=FORMA.MDF,<br />    name=FORMB.MDF<br />  </forms><br /></job>
