Using ADVC 55 with iMac Retina 5K Late 2014

Hi,
I was able to use my ADVC 55 capture device to capture non-digital video such as Hi-8 VHS etc. with my previous iMac which do naturally have Firewire port on the back side.  Now I am using iMac Retina which is not supplied with Firewire port.  However Apple does have a conversion cable from Firewire 800 to thunderbolt where you can then plug into thunderbolt ports on the back of the iMac Retina Late 2014.
Unfortunaletly, I cannot see the ADVC 55 capture interface on neither of my vide editing software such as Final Cut Pro, iMovie etc.  The ADVC unit itself has the light on it that is lit always in red color, not green color that you normally have with a successful connection.  I am suspicious about this conversion cable to thunderbolt that makes this incomplience.  Does anybody have a suggestion that I can follow?
Many Thanks,

Hi there - wondered if you got an answer to your question as I have the exact same question.
Many thanks
Richard

"...dissable the internal reader hardware from devices setup. Then plug the external usb superdrive and that's it."  Answered by Enrique T from Lima Oct  25 2013.
If you can locate an external Apple USB 'Air" superdrive for earlier model MacBook Air, that should work. The newer one for the Air is the same as for iMac, now.
You may be able to use other brands of external USB optical drive with your older intel-based iMac, as some of them function capably. A few should also be able to see system discs or other bootable utilities on DVD.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Good luck & happy computing!

It looks like you may need a mini-displayport to Displayport cable. You can also try holding the option key while clicking on "scaled" to see if the option you need comes up.

Hi, thanks for the assist.  Looks like there is a glitch in the new software, as I did as you suggested, removed other USB devices, powered off.  Then plugged in the keyboard - re started and hey presto it worked.  Thanks v.m.

  • Bootcamp support files on imac 27 5k late 2014

    Hi there everyone,
Been trying to install windows 7 by iso file on my 5k late 2014 imac.
After hdd is rebooted and logging in to windows 7 installation screen, i was not able to continue the progress due to '' can't  find the drivers'' error.
And each time i try a new solution, i have to format my usb hard drive, and bootcamp is downloading files from internet again, therefore alot of time goes by.
I would like to ask if its not possible for me to download support files manually on apple's site? I could not find any manual downloads for that.
    Any help will be Appreciated.

Build a USB with ISO/BC drivers once, by unchecking the last "Install/Remove Windows..." and re-use the same USB multiple times. Please use a USB2 device, not a USB3 device. USB3 causes problems, due to lack support built into the Windows installer for USB3 devices.

  • T-Bolt Display not working with iMac Retina

When I replaced my Late 2012 iMac with the new iMac Retina, the Thunderbolt Display I use for a second monitor would not come on and is not visible in the iMac's "Displays" preferences.  Has anyone had this problem?  I tried rebooting the iMac, but no luck.
According to Apple, this iMac IS capable of outputting to two Thunderbolt displays.  I have the upgraded video card in the iMac.

Ugh.  I'm an idiot.  I never imagined the Apple Thunderbolt/mini-DP cable would go bad between unplugging the old mac and plugging in the new one.  I tried a different cable and the display came on.  Problem solved!

  • Problems with iMac retina 5K (artifacts, glitches and etc.)

    Hello dear Apple.
I have bought new iMac with retina 5K display and I have found lot of problem with it. It was December 2014 when I got my first iMac. And after then I have found few real problems with it.
The first problem is I can't open high resolution image with standard Preview.app. I mean 'high resolution' - more then 30-40 megapixels. When I open them, I can see image, but only 2-3 seconds, and after that I see horizontal artifacts only. I can't open images, like this Rembrandt.jpg; Carpaccio.jpg; Holbein.jpg
The second problem, when I change resolution in to scaled mode (System Preferences/Display) for increase image on display. I found when select some area on background of desktop it has left some lines after itself. It is particularly unpleasant if you have plain colour desktop background. You can view, how does it look here.
The next problem with animation in different parts of interface, e.g. sometimes when I open Time Machine some parts of windows are freezing or appear some artifacts or glitches near borders of window. And I have the same situation, when I open Mission Control, or any Adobe app or other, or simply rename a files. I have found few discussions with problems like mine, but in the separate places

And after that I want to tell you that I have this problems on four (4) iMacs. It was really difficult to arrange four replace. I have lost a lot of time an spent a lot of nerves for discuss and resolve my problems with Apple support. Finally, they told me that they do not know about problems with iMacs, and they could offer give my money back. I glad to get my funds, but now in my country price for iMacs has doubled. And if they refund my money, I can buy half new iMac only.
I am sorry for my language and style, but I do not know what I should doing with that. And should I hope, that my problem resolve with OS X updates? Or it is hardware problem of the whole iMacs 5K...

Yes Ralph, absolutely correct, 4 times. Do you have the graphic card the same as me, or m290? Could I ask you check your iMac for few things, please?
For the first, can you enlarge scale in System preference/Display and install plain dark color desktop background. Are there any footprints after rectangular selection like in my video https://youtu.be/dBglFvjJx1Q?
And for the second, could you download this image https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/07/Rembrandt_Harmensz._van_Rijn _-_Nachtwacht_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg  and open in plain Preview.app, and zoom it? Are there any glitches?
    Thank forward.

  • IPad 2 can't pair with iMac wireless Keyboard (late 2009)

ipad 2 will not pair with wireless keyboard that came with iMac late 2009.
I've read countless ways to do this in support forums, but no matter what I do, I can not get the ipad 2 to work with my wireless keyboard.
In settings>bluetooth, I UNCHECKED discoverable for the keyboard, as I've read many times.
I then clicked the minus button and a box came up ( I can not recall what it said but it basically asked if I wanted to ?remove? the device, and I clicked OK.
Then, I went to the iPad 2, into bluetooth, and went to pair it. The keyboard was discoverable, and then something with a code came up on the iPad screen, and I clicked OK.
NOTHING happened, even though it said it was connected.
I looked at my iMac screen, and there was something there with a code that had to be typed in? This is where I get confused. I disconnected the keyboard, yet I got a box on the iMac screen, asking me to put the code in to pair it with the ipad 2 !  I figured it must be a mistake, because I disconnected the keyboard from the imac.
well, I tried to key in the code and it worked on the IMAC...which, technically, it should not have been able to do.
I've watched countless Youtube videos, read through the support forums here and...I can't find anyone with  this same problem and so, I toss it out to you all in Apple Support.
What could I be doing wrong??
    Thanks.

Spoke with an Apple Care Tech today on this issue:
Apparently, this is how it works : First, you have to go to BLUE TOOTH and when you see your keyboard, delete it or remove it, and then shut down the computer.
Then, you must go to your iPAD. (initially, your blue tooth on iPAD should be TURNED OFF- now, turn it ON.
Press and hold the button on the right side of your keyboard for 5 seconds, and watch for it to blink then go off.
Next, push the button on the side of the keyboard again, it will go on.
On your ipad, under Blue Tooth, you will see some numbers and it might say NOT CONNECTED. Click that.
Be patient and then under that, something like YOUR NAME KEYBOARD will appear. Click it and it will give you a code to type in. Type it in. Be patient. Might not take the first time. Do it again. When the code comes up again, type it in again.
This worked for me as suddenly the keyboard was paired with the iPAD 2.
When you want to unpair it, turn blue tooth on the  ipad OFF. Turn your computer back on. Initially your screen will come up to sign in (if you have it set up that way). In a few seconds, you will see that your keyboard has reconnected to your Mac. Sign in and that's that:)

  • Replace my iMac (2011) with iMac retina. To migrate or to do a fresh install, which is better?

My old iMac (2011) is already upgraded to 10.10.1. It seems running slow now. I got a iMac retina and planned to move everything from old iMac to new one. Please advise whether to use Migration Assistant or to do freah install of all applications and then manually copy all files over. Which way is better?

I've always been in favor of starting out from scratch. You could get a Thunderbolt to Firewire adaptor, however, and use a Thunderbolt cable. Then you could migrate over a fast connection by using Target Disk Mode. If you have a backup on an external drive, then you can use it instead of the computer. In both these cases you can use Migration Assistant to transfer your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences.

  • IMac (27-inch, Late 2013) with iMac (27-inch, Late 2012) in TDM issue

With the late-2013 iMac 27" (3.5 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 3 TB Fusion, Mavericks 10.9.4) as the primary and the late-2012 iMac 27" (3.4 GHz, 16 GB RAM, 3 TB Fusion, Yosemite Beta 10.10) in TDM, the screen on the target display blinks off and on (goes black and comes right back after a split second). It happens intermittently, regardless of which Thunderbolt port is used to connect the two computers. The other Thunderbolt port on the primary is used to connect two external FW800 drives via a Thunderbolt-to-FW800 adapter.
Through exhaustive testing, and in constant consultation with AppleCare senior advisors, I have seemingly ruled out all obvious potential hardware or software culprits:
An AVR is feeding both computers consistent power.
Each computer's RAM and video cards have been tested with TechTool Pro 7: everything passed.
The Thunderbolt cable has been replaced.
Reset the NVRAM and SMC on both computers (though with all the testing I've done since, it might not hurt to do this again).
Both computers have been running the latest version of OS X (the target display is currently running Yosemite Beta).
Made sure to enable TDM after the primary iMac has completed its full startup process.
Turned down the display brightness on both computers.
Trashed the com.apple.windowserver.plist file on the late-2013 iMac.
None of these steps have resolved the problem and I am having NO other issues with either computer. I'm stumped, as are the AppleCare senior advisors I've been working with. This issue has been present since I first connected these two computers this way. Design flaw not revealed in testing? Problem part not revealed in testing?
Anyone here seen anything like this or have any ideas of what else I can try? Help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Dana

Purchase a Windows PC?? Gasp, indeed! No, after months of software and hardware troubleshooting with an AppleCare senior advisor, and me refusing to believe my brand new 2013 iMac could have a hardware defect, I finally took my entire configuration (both iMacs, voltage regulator, back-UPS) in to my local Apple Store. They were able to replicate the issue, but then misdiagnosed the problem and replaced an internal display cable. Within minutes of reconnecting everything at home, the problem returned. So AppleCare sent an authorized service tech to my home to replace the logic board. That seems to have finally solved the problem. Inconveniently, the tech didn't have what he needed to flash the new logic board with my serial number right then, so I had to wait two weeks to get that done. It did finally get done though, and now all is well.
    Good luck with your issue!

  • Using VMWare with iMAC

Hi We are relatively a new bunch of users where I work. We are predominately a Windows based site but have purchased # 30 iMACs. We want to install VMware on our MACS. Our question is.. Can we create an XP image and install it on our virtual volume on the MACS using Symantec Ghost? Did that make sense?

  • Problems With MBP Retina Display late '13

I Have some problems with my mbp:
-I Can't use bluetooth because wifi stop work, it's impossible to surf the internet.
-Raw and Jpeg preview too slow.
-Mail problems every time I open it.
-Music stop when I use lightroom.
-I had send 4 times the computer to SAT and APPLE don't give me a solution.
    Any recommendation.

thanks! yeah i recorded it so i hope they will take the problem more seriously.
Unfortunately i don't have an applecare protection plan, but i hope that the proof that i've been in an apple store for the same issue already in april will help me somehow.
I also think that when i touch with my hand both chassis and display i make some connection working again. Maybe i'm the radioactive man, or i have some special powers...or for the first time time in my life i bought a bugged apple product. But i think is more possible one of the first two options!

  • IMac 27 5k (late 2014) fan runs low speed nonstop during sleep mode

    Hi,
New to the Mac community. Had the iMac 27 5K for about a month now. I've noticed the fan in the back of the monitor runs on low the entire time it's in Sleep Mode. I need to put my ear up to the vent to hear the fan running but can definitely feel air blowing out of it even after it's been sleeping for a few hours.  It runs on low throughout the night.  The fan stops completely only when it's shut down.  Since this is my first iMac, not sure if this is normal or not?  Can anyone confirm or have the same occurrence?  Thanks for your input.

    UPDATE:
For anyone with the same issue with this model of iMac; the fan running on low when it's in sleep mode is NOT NORMAL.  I eventually brought the computer into an Apple store. They ran diagnostics and nothing. This model being so new has not had many logged issues in their database.  They were going to reinstall the OS but after I reiterated that the fan runs all throughout the night while in sleep mode they decided to exchange it for another new computer.  As an aside I noticed a large spike in my electricity bill in the month I've had the iMac hence noticing the fan ran all the time while in sleep mode.  Otherwise, I wouldn't have look into it as an issue.  I'm pleased to say that with the new computer, when I put it into sleep mode, the fan stops.  Hope this helps others who run into this problem.
