Using AEBS with non-wireless Mac mini to connect with modem wirelessly

Daughter has a Mac mini w/o wifi on 2nd floor and DSL wifi modem which must be located on 1st floor. Due to other old computer, modem is configured to 64-bit WEP for wireless.  Want to add mini to her network.  (I've discovered that 40-bit mode on AEBS is really 64-bit mode.)
I'm trying to use a new Airport Extreme Base station by connecting mini to AEBS via Ethernet cable.  Then I'm hoping to configure AEBS to connect to the DSL modem wirelessly - don't know if that is possible.  I tried setting AEBS to "join a wireless network".  It finds the DSL network, so I enter the modem's password. I've then gone through a number of configurations on AEBS but each time, when AEBS restarts, it doesn't get out of yellow blinking light or (on one try if I recall correctly) I got the green light - but then Airport Utility is never able to find AEBS and I end up starting from scratch by resetting AEBS.
1) Can I even use AEBS to connect to a wireless network and have a Mac wired to it so the Mac can reach the Internet?
2) if yes, what wireless mode should I set AEBS to?  What other settings do I need to get right?
Thanks

This is a "n" version of AEBS.
Please refer back to the previous posts. I was talking about an AirPort Express (AX) as the device that has this special feature.
Ironically, the less expensive AirPort Express will do what you want with a special feature that allows it to "join" a wireless network and then enable the Ethernet port.
If you have an AirPort Express 802.11n, I will post the steps for you if you want them.

  • My mac mini loses connection with my receiver after turning off the receiver then back on

My Mac Mini loses connection with my Onkyo receiver NR-609 after turning off the receiver then back on.  The only way to reistablish the connection is to unplug then replug the HDMI cable to the Mac Mini.  There's no effect if I unplug then replug the HDMI to the receiver.  Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.  I've searched a lot but haven't found much of anything so if this is covered elsewhere I would greatly appreciate a link.
    Thanks in advance

Hi and thanks.  I don't know about the audio prefs.  When it happens I am not able to see or hear anything from the computer until I un/re-plug the HDMI to the Mini.  I'm not sure it's changing to something else because there's nothing else connected for it to change to.  I could see that perhaps the audio will change to the Mac Mini's internal speaker.
I found out last night that if, after I lose the signal,  I use my ipad to play a video on the Mac Mini using the Remote app and home sharing the signal gets righted and I can see/hear the computer again.  It's quite an inconvenient fix though and I wish and hope someone here can help me.

  • Can I use windows 7 on my Mac mini 2.1 with bootcamp?

I have a Mac Mini 2.1 running OS 10.5.8, and an unspecified version of bootcamp. Currently using Windows XP. I want to upgrade to Windows 7. Can I do this? If so, do I need 32 bit version or 64 bit version?

Just a heads up, you don't need to run bootcamp to install windows on a Mac (if you want it to be the primary OS)
I have a Core 2 Duo Mac mini running Win7 x64 without any issues. I will check which model it is later.
It has 5 USB, FW 800, and displayport + mini displayport (if that helps identify the model)

No. There is no "USB Target Disk Mode".
Just so we're clear, when you start your Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode (TDM - holding T on startup), do you see a FireWire icon on the Mac mini's display? IIRC, it's not required that the Mac mini be connected to a display for TDM, but it would help diagnose whether or not the mini is actually starting in this mode.

  • Help with using internet sharing on my MacBook Pro with an old mac mini

I have an old mini osx 10.4.11 with no wifi.  My much newer MacBookPro osx10.6.7 can't seem to share it's internet connection between it and the mini via ethernet cable.  I'm using the MacBook airport to connect to my SMC router.
The DHCP on the mini has an IP, and it seems correct.  But, I can't get a browser to connect.  Can someone suggest a way to troubleshoot?

That is the more difficult of the forms of Internet sharing possible on a Mac. Of course the easiest thing to do is put out US$100 and just get an AirPort Express and connect the mini to the Express' Ethernet port. The mini would have the fastest connection that your router puts out with none of the hassles of connecting and disconnecting when you want to leave with the MacBook.
Read over my last comment in this thread for the configuration of wi-fi to Ethernet. Just substitute the mini for the XBox.

  • Using An ASD LCD display with a new Mac Mini

I want to utilize a 17" Apple Studio Display with my new Mac Mini.
Does HDMI support the 35-pin Apple Display Connector (ADC)?
It would require an adapter with female 35-pin on one side and a male HDMI (DVI) on the other. The Apple DVI to ADC adapter doesn't work with the Mac Mini HDMI port.
If two adapters are needed they must have the correct gender connections.
    Thanks.

Your correct, you would need an Apple DVI to ADC adapter, And ether mini display port to DVI OR HDMI to DVI adapter. (just a question of witch port you want to use)
Apple DVI to ADC adapter when they were first released cost about 120; now they're kind of rare and harder to find. Online they can go for 200 dollars. so 120 to 200 dollars to make your display work; and displays don't last for ever they have parts that will break down. Older displays have a light bulb inside them; witch burn out just like all the other light bulbs in your house.
Also DVI to ADC adapters can some times give you blurry images and or text.
For 120 dollars you can buy a generic brand 19" LCD. That 19" LCD would have better contrast ratio, brightness, and refresh rate then the old 17" monitor. (and it would have a warranty) Or for 200 dollars you could buy 23" monitor.

  • Using External Boot Drive with New Intel Mac Mini

I have a 1st Gen MacMini and use an external 7200 RPM Lacie drive as the system boot drive along with all the applications.
If I were to purchase a new Intel Mac Mini, is it possible to use the current external drive as the system drive or is there some conversion steps that would be necessary ?
    Thank you.

You can use the hardware, but will have to repartition and reinstall the OS from the disk shipped with the new Mac Mini.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303220
If you create a disk image of the Lacie on your Mini, you can later use setup assistant to restore users and applications from that image.

Probably.  Any information about the monitor?

  • Can. I use my MAC Mini in conjunction with my iMac?

Can I use my MAC Mini in conjunction with my iMAC? I can not upgrade the OS of the iMAC due to software that I need and Lion does not support it.
If I could bounce back an forth or use the software from the MAC Mini with the iMAC, this would solve my dilemma.

Before I buy a networked drive can I use the airport to connect with an external
USB drive and set both macs  use the  drive as a time machine
Can you hook this up? Sure.
Is is supported by Apple?  No.
Some users report that this seems to work when they try it.
Others....like me....have corruption problems anywhere from a few days to a few months after I set up a test....which I do whenever a new version of firmware or a new operating system becomes available.
We cannot predict your results, so if you decide to try this, and your backups are valuable, you might want to have a secondary backup plan in place as well....just in case.

  • What display do you use with your 2005 Mac mini?

    Hi all,
I was wondering which displays people are using with their 2005 Mac minis and
which (if any) adapters are necessary?
    Thanks!
    Mike

I'm using a Magnavox 15" LCD TV via it's VGA input on my day one mini. The original 2005 minis have a full sized normal DVI output and came with a DVI to VGA adapter. If yours no longer has that, it's the only adapter you'd need for most common computer monitors. Many newer monitors come with DVI already, so no adapter would be needed.

  • What OS do the new non-lion mac minis use?

    What is it?

    Ebinellis is correct.
All new mac mini computers sold by Apple will have 10.7 Lion.
There are no new non-lion mac minis of this model without optical drive.
Old stock - new mac minis of the previous year with optical drive - the way they are still available at 3rd party retailers - come with 10.6 Snow Leopard. Upgradable to 10.6.8 via software update. And also upgradable to Lion.

Make sure the mini-displayport/TB plug is fully seated.  It may look fully plugged in but isn't.
Make sure the Displays system preferences has an Arrangement tab.  No Arrangement means the monitor is not being detected.
    Do a smc reset.
If none of this works I suggest you take it back to apple (along with your mini).

  • Mac Mini '09 incompatible with older flat panel TV's?

I just bought a Mac Mini '09 and tried to hook it up to an old (2002) Sony Plasma 32" TV. I am using the mini-DVI to S-video/composite video adapter. I get a "no signal" response from the TV, indicating that the Mini and the TV are not communicating. My black '06 MacBook is able to successfully connect to the Sony TV using the exact same adapter and cable combination. The TV only has component video, s-video, and composite video inputs -- no digital inputs.
I spoke with an Apple Care person, and she and I agreed that there is likely a compatibility issue with the new Mac Mini's video card and older TV's. I have also seen it suggested that the new Mini's DVI port will not pass on an analog video signal. Is there any fix for this, either a driver or a cable adapter? Would one of the display manager programs (SwitchResX, etc.) be helpful? Do I need to get a new TV?

It sounds like the new Mac Mini has HDCP enabled (as it is on the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros).
This is a kind of copy protection, and will not allow HDCP protected content to be played on an analog source.
A tool like http://www.hdfury.com/ will take the HDCP stream, and convert it to an analog stream. It's perfectly legal.. and will extend the life of older TV's (manufactured before 2002).

You really need a newer Mac Mini with a true HDMI output, because that Mac Mini's DVI output does not support Audio.
You might try a 3.5mm to RCA adapter
from the Mac Mini's headphone jack to the TV's audio input,
but that would require being able to select the Audio input in the TVs menu while using it's HDMI input.
Optionally you could also use an external 2.1 Speaker System or patch the audio from the Mac Mini to your home stereo system to enhance that older Mac Mini's audio.

  • HDTV acting up with late '09 Mac Mini - display prefs at issue

I used my 46" Sharp Aquos successfully with my 2006 Mac Mini before I gave it to my brother last December and got a new Mac Mini. They were connected with an HDMI-DVI cable from one of the TV's HDMI ports via an HDMI-DVI cable to the mini-DVI port through the adapter.
Three times this morning within 20 minutes of turning on the TV the TV has turned itself off (the audible click that occurs when the TV is turned on or off and the two green lights go off). The TV turns itself off in a few seconds.
I contacted a Sharp Aquos person online who gave me a case # and told me to call Sharp on the phone so they could walk me through a factory reset.
When I got Sharp on the phone they asked me what preferences from the manual's chart I had chosen. I told them that it was my understanding that Macs do this automatically. I checked my display prefs and they're "1080p" (the manual's chart has only vertical and horizontal resolutions) and the profile is set to "SHARP HDMI". Are these prefs OK and thus the Mac Mini not at fault in all this?

Correction: I meant to write :The TV turns itself BACK ON in a few seconds
