Using AIM through iChat

Ok. I've already been using AIM on my iChat, and let me tell ya, it works much better than AIM itself.
Anyway, I was wondering, is there an easy way to put all of the screen names in AIM onto my .Mac account? This way I can just use that account for email and IM.

This is taken from the ichatav3 help menu:
Click the Add button in the Buddy List window. A list appears, showing cards in your Address Book. Choose the person you want to add to your Buddy List. If the person is not already in your Address Book, click New Person.
If the person does not have an instant message address, you need to enter one. You can enter more than one screen name by separating each with a comma. If your friend signs on using any of the screen names you enter, you'll see them in your Buddy List.
You can also drag a person's name from your Bonjour list to your Buddy List to add that person to your Buddy List. The person in the Bonjour list must have a a valid AIM or .Mac account.
When you add a new person to your Buddy List, a new card is added to Address Book.
Your Buddy List is stored on an instant message server, so you can log in to your account from any computer and see if your buddies are online.

Im trying to use AIM through Ichat and it doesn't seem to be working? can i just install AIM and use it with the Ichat, because that isnt working either...i tried installing aim and when I double click it I get an error msg or it tries to open in Excel??

You don't need the AIM software to use iChat, just sign up for a free screen name.

I don't have an .Mac acount, so I use MSNforMac to talk with an Hotmail account to my PC friends.
I want to use iChat because MSNforMac don't let us make videoconferences.
But can I talk to my friends (that use MSN in a PC) by iChat with an AIM Acount?
So I tried to create an AIM acount
But now, when I write the screen name and the password of my AIM acount in iChat, appears an message saying that iChat couldn't connect to AOL service.

Yes the Jabber side of iChat can be made with the aid of "Transports" to connect to other services such as MSN.
However this does not include Video or Audio with the current Codecs used.
Your options are aMSN or Mercury Messenger for Video to MSN Buddies or as has been said move to Skype.

If I don't use AIM, is iChat useful?

I actually have iChat 4.0. If everyone I communicate with is on a PC and use either MSN or Yahoo Messenger, is there any reason to use iChat...for anything?

I am using AIM in ichat and i can see the other person but cant hear them

They can see and hear me and ventrillo works for sound as does itunes and game so its not, systems/sound or i wouldnt have sound at all

Devices do have to be Set in System Preferences > Sound > output tab AND in iChat Menu > Preferences > Video/Audio section as the Output device (drop down if you have more than one).
Some Blue Tooth Headsets require that they are set in System Preferences > Sound > Input an Output tabs before setting in iChat.
If set up already set the iChat to any other output first then set System Preferences (Again) and then return to iChat to make it appear the Blue Tooth headset is being set "last" (As in Last step).

How do you set up osx as proxyserver to use aim from outside network?

I am trying to use AIM, from work, and of course work has all sorts of ports blocked, etc... so my understanding is that I need to set up my mac as a proxyserver and use aim through it. I have searched on the web and in discussions to no avail, anyone know how to do this?

Not true at all, and it still won't work, as your Mac, acting as a proxy server would still have to send data through your company's network, which would still be blocked.
Your company has those ports blocked for a reason, so unless you're the network admin, there's no way for you to get around it. The firewalls are doing their job.

Why did AIM for Ichat suddenly return an error?

I was using AIM for iChat earlier this morning and everything was working fine. Then suddenly, without warning, it logs out of every iChat account and returns the error: "An internal error occured that disconnected you from all iChat services. To resume iChat, log in again to your instant messaging account." I can log into my bonjour and jabber account, but as soon as I try to connect to AIM, it brings them all offline. I went to AIM.com and signed in and have been using the web client since, but apparently this has happened to about half of my friends on iChat. Why would this be and what can I do to fix it?

Now and then the AIM Servers have a blip and many people seems to get kicked Off Line.
I have server accounts/AIM IDs and keep some using SSL and the api.oscar.aol.com server on port 443 and some using the login.oscar.aol.com server on port 5190 without SSL.
Usually it only effects one group of my logins and not all of them.
It can of course be a server local to you that is having issues.

When you use AIM on iChat does it look the same as in the regular AIM program? ie. same convo box? Or should i just download the AIM program sepperatly? I mean just download AIM.?

Using iChat AV and trying to video conference with a PC using AIM

I am trying to create an AV session from my mac to a PC. I am using iChat with an AIM username and the PC is using AIM. Everytime i try to establish a video connection it says that I did not respond. What can I do to fix this?

He is on XP ?
He is using AIM 5.9 ?
He has Tuned the camera and Mic to the App ?
If he is at Service Pack 2 he has enabled the app through the XP firewall ?
You have the MAc firewall Off.
The ports are enabled in your modem.
Either using UPnP or these actual ports
5060, 5190, 5678, 16384-16403 for just the AIM stuff.
Have you changed the Quicktime setting to match your download speed ?
Can you and he get any of the people or test accounts o this page ?

You can't.
Messages - the replacement for iChat in Mountain Lion and beyond will do Screen Sharing but only to the accounts it did in iChat 5 and 6 (actually it includes iChat 4 as well)
That is to say in earlier version of iChat you could login to AIM and Jabber servers as well as enabling the Bonjour option to chat on your LAN.
All these will do Video and Audio only chats which in turn means they will Screen Share.
At iChat 6 an Yahoo option was added but it can only Text chat (it can't even send Files or Pics)
This means only the Internet able accounts that login in to AIM or to a Jabber server can Video and therefore Screen Share.
The iMessages account will Invoke FaceTime if you use the Video icon during text chat. (I.e. it is not Video inside the app like the AIM or Jabber accounts can do)
NOTE.
AIM includes Apple Issued Apple ID as Valid AIM Screen Names.
Google Mail ID s can be used and Google Talk IDs with Messages as they run a Jabber server.
Facebook allow you to create a Chat ID (Facebook Chat ID) which is also a Jabber server.

IChat video conference with PC using AIM

I have successfully connected with my brothers PC and we can see and hear each other using ichat on my side and AIM on his PC. Unfortunately, he only has a one inch by one inch screen the displays the vidio image while I'm enjoyng a full screen using ichat.
Is there anything a PC user can do to increse the size of their video viewing window when using AIM?

IChat freezes when using AIM direct connection

When attempting to send or receive files by dropping them into the text input field in iChat, the program becomes unresponsive for almost a minute and sometimes more.
This happens when attempting to send a picture or other type of file (regardless of size) by dragging the file into the text entry field and pressing return. The problem happens when another AIM user (regardless of their AIM client--iChat or other) will try to send me a file as well.
I do not experience any freezes when I send or receive files by dragging the file over their name on the buddy list or by selecting Buddies>Send File.
I've seen other posts referring to similar problems--even pointing to the possibility that the Chax add-on is causing problems. At this writing, Chax is uninstalled from my system fully.
I have also followed steps to delete the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist to no avail.
My account is set to use port 443.
Are there any possible solutions to this problem?

I get this as well. Same problems when I delete com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist's too.

AIM stand alone or through iChat?

Why not use an AIM account in iChat... I just set up an account for myself with AIM. In the AIM preferences they ask if I want make iChat the default application. Should I choose AIM or iChat in that preference question? Can that be done in reverse, choose AIM as the default application in the iChat preferences?

I'm not entirely sure what you are asking, but as long as you have both applications (iChat & AIM) installed, in either preferences you can set one or the other to be default.
I prefer iChat, but that's just me... try both, and see which you like better.

Problems Logging On iChat using AIM

I am new to iChat and am trying to use iChat AV.
I do not have a .mac account and am trying to use an AIM account.
I can open and connect with AIM when opening from AIM program.
However, when I open iChat AV (3.1.8) it prompts me for my password. When I enter the password I get an error that "iChat was unable to login to the AOL Instant Messenger service because your screen name or password was incorrect". I have verified both and am unable to log into iChat.
I read another posting about the same issue using a .mac account but the issue was unresolved and the answers were a little confusing as to how to solve the problem.
I am using AIM 4.7
MacBook Pro 15" Mac OS X (10.4.10) 2.33 GHz Intel

Aim screen name reads as it should.
I checked and have not by accident added it as an @mac name.
Checked the preferences and Running man is there.
The box to check multiple logins had not been checked and I did so.
In addition the password in the preferences had not been added so I added the password. It later showed up as longer when I went back to check to make sure it had taken but I understand this is normal.
I again tried to log on while making sure AIM 4.7 was not running. I received the same error message.
I do remember reading one of the discussions where I believe you talked about possibly taking out the . and maybe the @ for the names. So if my user name was [email protected] it should actually read example123aimcom or example123@aimcom when I open iChat. Did I read that correctly and if so what should it be when I open iChat and check my preferences?
Regardless, I have tried it multiple ways and still get the same error message about the password being incorrect and can not log on.

Contacting iChat Buddies using AIM from an old iMac

I currently use AIM (v. 3.0N) on an old iMac (OS v8.6). I want to chat to a couple of buddies who have recently switched from AIM to using the latest version of iChat with OSX v10.5. I have successfully added their screen-names to my AIM setup, but wondered if I now need to e-mail or phone them to ask them to add my screen-name to their new iChat setups (they haven't yet appeared online)? Or will iChat automatically notify them - as with Windows Messenger - that they are now on my 'buddies' list (next time then sign on) and give them the option to accept or reject (so-to-speak)?
