Using Aiport Disk with iLife libraries

I was very pleased with the ease of setting up my iTunes & iPhoto libraries on the shared Airport Disk. Looking at photos or listening to music via this disk is fine (except for a short lag accessing the files when I first open the app.)
But actually writing to the disk - adding music, changing the tags on the music, adding photos to the library - is excruciatingly slow.
Granted, I am running on the G network, but my eMac is less than 20 feet away from the AEBS/Disk. Just changing a category or a group of 12 songs took several minutes.
Not good.
Any tweaks I should consider?

No, I am having the same issues. As a wireless AP on my network it is working ok; but as a NAS it a brick. Its not my network as all machines can see my wired Linkstation NAS off of my fios router all the time. This is a new dual band time capsule which I receive after the release of 7.4.1. I have tried to go
back to 7.3.2 though I get a error message telling me it is not compatible.
1)The Mac can see everything though sometimes it attaches to Time capsule as a guest.
2 Vista Laptop(Wireless) and XP Desktop(Wired) sees everything though will only log into the the time capsule share as guest and then only for a few minutes and the lose the Time Capsule from the network. Restarting the Time capsule allows me to attach again.
3)Printing to wired network Cannon printer works from all machines

Linkstation

I am using jstl to get and use xml data
I needs to perform operations on the parsed xml document with other libraries of jstl. How can i do that.
I used Dom variable to parse my document as:

HOW CAN I SET THIS VALUE IN CORE VARIABLE THAT IS, USING <c:set...> SO THAT IT CAN BE USED ANYWHERE IN JSP PAGE TO CONCATE RETURNED STRING IN OTHER STRING VARIABLES DEFINED BY CORE LIB?

I believe that <c:set> should do that but i am facing problem in it. Look into this jsp scriptlet:
1-<x:parse varDom="test"> <c:import url="project.xml"/> </x:parse>
2-<x:set var="ds" select="$test/project/projectName"/>
3-<x:out select="$ds"/> <br>
4-<c:set var="tt" value="${ds}" />
5-<c:out value="${tt}" />
In line 3 variable ds returns: myProject
In line 5 variable tt returns: [[projectName: null]]
perhaps on line 4 ds is storing some array to tt and i am not calling correct array element. I tried many options but still could not find solution. Plz Plz do something urgent for me. Thanks

Can you use wifi sync with multiple libraries and multiple devices

Hi all
Does anyone know if you can use wifi sync with 1 computer, 2 libraries and 2 devices?
I have my wife's iPhone synced to 1 library and mine to another library but on the same computer. Will wifi sync work this way or do you need iTunes to be open to the correct library for it to work? As I know you can't have 2 instances of itunes open on the same computer.

I have been looking more and more into this and it appears no.
You need to have iTunes running on the computer to enable it to wifi sync. You can use 2 devices on 1 library but if you don't have all the right options ticked you will then end up with each others stuff on each others device.
To enable wifi sync you need to have your iDevice connected to the same wifi network as your computer and iTunes open on that computer.
With my library open it detected my wife's phone and started to sync. Hasty push of cancel sync button lol.
There is a guide on here somewhere about multiple devices with 1 library which I can't find at the moment that tells you which options to tick so only your stuff stays on your device the the other half's on their device.
Its basically tick 'sync only ticked songs and videos' under summary of your device
Under apps take tick out of 'automatically sync new apps'
Then under edit->preferences click device and click prevent i's from syncing automatically
I think you should then be able to sync both devices to 1 library with mucking them up too much
Hopefully please correct me if I'm wrong
I have tried not doing the last step and asking it to open itunes automatically when phone is connected but this does not work with wifi sync

DO NOT install Airport Extreme update 2008-4 if using usb disk with TM

I have Airport Extreme and a WD 1TB disk with two partitions connected to the Extreme. Other partition just for stuff and the other for Time Machine backup.
Today I installed Firmware update 7.3.2 and disaster struck. I noticed that Airport Extreme was reporting a disk problem. I disconnected the drive from Extreme and use the Disk utility to find out what is the matter. The partition used for backup needed repair, but couldn't be repaired. I had to format it.
The worst thing (besides losing all my TM backups): After I got the disk formatted, I checked TM. It wasn't possible to do Time Machine backups any more for a USB disk connected to Airport Extreme.
Anyone else have the same?
I strongly recomend NOT to install the update if using Airport Extreme + USB disk for Time Machine.
I'm really dissapointed if this is an issue connected to the update 7.3.2.

I'm having issues too wtih the drive connected to my airport extreme basestation but not the same kind.
Sometimes (5 time a day) the airport extreme doesn't respond anymore and it doesn't appear in the airport utility. Then every body is disconnected from internet (even if the light stil green...).
I have to reboot the basestation manualy.
I also have two partitions (datas and TM). I'ts very anoying th only solution i found right now is to unplug my drive...
Hope Apple will fix this ASAP ...

I want to install winXP to my iMAC running Lion OS. I will use BootCamp. My winXP uses 2 disks with XP on one CD and SP2 on the other. Bootcamp seems to say use a one disk version.   What can I do about this paradox?

     I want to install winXP on my iMac. It has OS 10.7.2 and uses a 27" display. I will use Bootcamp and create a separate partion for winXP. Bootcamp instructions call for a single disk winXP CD with Service Pack 2 on it. My version has winXP on one disk and Service pack 2 on another. Will this be a problem? If it is, is there a solution?

If you just bought an iMac a week ago new, it WILL NOT support XP unless XP is inside a virtual machine. End of story. You will need Windows 7 if you plan to run Windows natively on any Mac in 2011.
Used models will run XP, though--from the Intel inception in '06 through the middle part of 2010.
However, consider that Microsoft wants XP gone--and badly so--even as it is extending security hotfix support through April 2014. This gives you two years and four months before you have to throw down for whatever's current at that time.
Windows 7 will give you a much better experience (dare I say more Mac-like?) than XP, as it seems to be better organized. The Taskbar, for instance, has become more like the OS X Dock in that you can "pin" things to it in a straightforward manner, unlike XP's seldom-used Quick Launch traybar.
7's also built to take advantage of all the snazzy new hardware you now have.
But don't let me sell it to you. It's really your call.

Help needed with using network disk with iMovie with NFS or AFP

I have iMac with iMovie08 that talks to a remote disk hosted under Linux over a gigabit network using SMB (Samba). It all works ok and I have done a few movies.
Now, I have done some tests with NFS and AFP (AppleTalk) and it seems that these are much faster than SMB.
I then stopped the Samba server and proceeded to setup NFS and also AFP
First NFS,
So I then exported my directory using NFS and I can see everything from my Mac (correct permissions too since I made both user and group IDs the same...). The problem is that when I launch iMovie it shows me the Volume for my external networked disk but it shows it with a little triangle with yellow exclamation and it does not show any of the events (>500GB of events).
If I stop NFS and then switch to AFP I get the same behavior. That is, everything from the Mac works on the AFS mounted disk (copying files back and forth, etc....) but I can't see the contents of the disk from within iMovie
I changed permissions so that anybody can read/write/execute (although there are files that have an '@' sign at the end when I do ls -l on them and I can't remember what that means....)
If I stop NFS and then go back to SMB (Samba) then I am back to a working configuration.
Can I use NFS or AFP with iMovie? What exactly does the yellow triangle mean?

More timings on smb vs nfs. Note that the big diffs is when sending single large files. The dd cmd was used to simulate 1 hour of DV video which is about 12GB

Boot into single-user mode. After startup is completed you will be in command line mode and should see a prompt with a cursor positioned after it. At the prompt enter the following then press RETURN:
/sbin/fsck -fy
If you receive a message that says "***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****" then re-run the command until you receive a message that says "** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OK." If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way. If you were successful then enter:
reboot
and press RETURN to restart the computer.
There is no guarantee this will fix the problem. Normally you must boot from another drive in order to repair the startup volume. If you can't use a Snow Leopard DVD then you would need to use some other bootable device like a backup drive or another Mac connected via Firewire - Target Disk Mode.

Using Boot Disk with external monitor?

Does anyone have any idea how to boot from the OSX install disk while using an external monitor?
My powerbook screen and HD are both busted and I can't install the OS on the new HD. I can get to the point where it has booted up and is using the external monitor as a second screen but I can't see what I'm doing! HELP!

Do you have another Mac at your disposal? If you have installed a new HD into the PB and need to put an OS on it, you could put the PB into firewire target mode and attach it as a second drive to another Mac. You can then install an OS onto it.
It might also work that, when you have the PB booted and the external monitor is acting as the second screen, close the lid and put the PB to sleep. Then, wake it up by plugging in a USB mouse or keyboard and the external screen should become the primary screen. You need to have the PB plugged into the AC adapter to perform this trick.

I need to recover my Toshiba laptop using original Toshiba recovery dvd, but my internal dvd ram doesn't work, so how I set my pc to look for external dvd ram when the windows is starting? I followed the instructions and hold the C button when started computer, but when I press F12 doesn't matter which drive for boot I select, my pc just starts windows...

What notebook model you have exactly?
Normally you can restore the factory settings from Toshiba recovery disk or if you use the HDD recovery option. To use the HDD recovery option you have to go in advanced boot menu (F8) and select Repair My Computer and follow the screen instructions.
If you can boot from external CD/DVD drive is depending on your notebook model that you have. Normally you can find more information in user manual about this.

How to use Aiport Express with Verizon FIOS Actiontec MI424WR

The Airport Express won't connect to the Actiontec MI424WR FiOS router when it's set to use WPA2 encryption.
I figured this out after a couple of hours of resetting the Airport Express and Googling the issue.
It's annoying to have to "downgrade" to WPA but other than leaving the network unprotected, that's the only way to make them work together.
So on the Actiontec, use WPA TKIP & AES (make sure both TKIP & AES are selected as AES alone won't work either) encryption.
On the Airport Express pick WPA/ WPA2 Personal.
The Pass-Phrase should obviously be the same.
I hope this helps someone by showing-up in Google searches for people.

Apple does note that the AirPort Express cannot join "other" networks using WPA2, but it's buried in the fine print of footnote #3 on the spec sheet, so most folks are going to miss that bit of information.

Do you have only one computer or many that are connecting to the AirPort Express (AX)?
If you only have one, try this:
Configure the AX so that the option to distribute IP addresses is DISABLED.
Save the settings and close the AirPort Admin Utility.
On your Mac, open Internet Connect.
Click VPN (PPTP).
Choose Edit Configurations from the Configuration pop-up menu.
Choose None from the Encryption pop-up menu.

Anybody out there with ANY success using Aiport Extreme with a PS3

I have an Airport Extreme and I am getting a DNS error when I try to setup a connection to my Playstation 3.

In the internet sharing options you may need to manually set it to share the WAN IP. I personally haven't had this problem. My PS3 works amazing with my AirPort Extreme. Also when I first setup up my AirPort it was saying something about a double NAT :S anyways I just reset it to factory then manually set it up, and everything connected perfectly. Also you can try setting up an IP reservation and then forward the PSN ports on the AirPort.

Using Image Shack with iPhoto '08

Hi, I just recently purchased a MacBook Pro (will be doing up-to-date; I was fully aware ) and I have a question about iPhoto '08. When I go to upload pictures to Image Shack I used to (iLife 2005) go to finder, then pictures, the iphoto library, then 2007, then to the file, select it, and upload. With '08 it is no more. I only have the option of selecting all 11 GB of iPhoto. Surely there must be a way other than searching the file name to find a photo in the finder!! (I was also wondering if there is a way to use iMovie HD with iLife '08. It is really a huge pain using the new iMovie).

See TD's treatis on file access. It describes several methods of accessing files for use outside of iPhoto. There's a 3rd party application,iMedia Browser, that interfaces with iPhoto, Aperture and any folder on the HD for viewing and selecting photos, i.e. Option-drag the photo to copy it to the the desktop.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

How do I install iMovie 06 with iLife 09 ?

I have installed iLife 09 on my MacBook. I don't like the new iMovie version and want to go back to iMovie06 but keep the rest of iLife 09. I don't even care if iMovie 09 is still there, I won't use it. I have the install disks for iLife 06 from my old computer. How do I do the installation? Do I first need to remove iMovie 09? Or do I have to remove all of iLife 09 and re-install all but iMovie 09 after installing iLife 06? What is the easiest path for me? I want all of iLife 09 except I want iMovie 06 in place of (or in addition to) iMovie 09.

Many people use iMovie 06 with iLife 09 & 08
There are 2 ways to do this.
1) Use Pacifist to install just iMovie 06 from the iLife 06 disk.
Pacifist is an application for Mac OS X that opens up .pkg installer packages, .dmg disk images, .zip, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .pax, and .xar archives, and more, and lets you install individual files out of them. This is useful if you need to install just one file out of a package instead of the entire package.
2) Delete iLife 09, install all of iLife 06, then re-install iLife 09.
When iLife 09 is installed, all of the old iLife applications are automatically deleted EXCEPT iMovie 06, because Apple WANTS you to have it.
I like method number 1 myself.
I use both iMovie 06 and iMovie 09 (iMovie 06 about 90%, iMovie 09 about 10%).

Is iWork 08 compatible with iLife 06?

I have iLife o6 and don't want to upgrade. I want iWork 08 for the Numbers program as well as the rest. Is iWork 08 compatible with iLife 06?

I used iWork '08 with iLife '06 for quite awhile before I updated to iLife '08 - no problems. Why don't you download the iWork '08 trial & try it for yourself?
