Using Aironet AP as wireless monitor

Hello,
we have purchased a couple of new Aironet APs for our office:
AIR-AP1262N-E-K9
My objective is to use some of these as wireless monitors to scan the vicinity and to report the SSIDs and RSSI values of all detected APs.
Basically something similar to the Linux command: "iwlist wlan0 scan".
Periodically, I would like to transmit the scanning results to a central server (e.g. via SNMP) for monitoring the whole network area.
How can I achieve this?
Are there built-in commands in the IOS to do this?
Or can I use Tcl scripts to perform this task?
Any other ideas?
I have worked with Cisco routers and switches before but I am new to wireless devices. So any advice and idea is highly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help!
Kind regards
Daniel

I have found an interesting command for the antenna alignment:
“During the antenna alignment test, the radio disassociates from its parent, probes adjacent access points, and records the MAC address and signal strength of responses it receives. [...] You display the last 10 results using the show dot11 antenna-alignment command, which lists the MAC address and signal level for the access points that responded to the probe”
This would be exactly what I am looking for. Unfortunately, it is not possible to activate this as described in the user manual:
AP#dot11 dot11radio 0 antenna-alignment
                             ^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.
AP#show dot11 antenna-alignment
No data, antenna-alignment command not run
The device is set to Access Point mode. Current firmware version is "C1260 Software (AP3G1-K9W7-M), Version 12.4(25d)JA1".
Does anybody have an idea why this command does not exist in this firmware? Does it only work with specific mode settings? Or might a firmware update to 15.2.2 help?
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

  • Using an LCD TV as monitor?

    I have a mac-mini 2.3 w/ 4GB RAM.
It has Thunderbolt and HDMI inputs (plus USB 2.0 and Firewire 800)
It's running Lion, most recent version.
I want to use a flatscreen tv as the sole monitor.
I'm going to buy a tv just for this purpose.
I want to be able to see (and control) the screen from approximately 15' away (I've already got the wirless keyboard and controller).
I am thinking a 36" to 40" monitor would work.
    I would like to spend $500 +/-.
What should I be looking for in specs for maximum clarity?
    I am assuming 1080p, and 120 Hz?
Best to use LCD or plasma?
I expect to use the tv principally for a computer monitor, but occasionally for tv.
I would like the ability to split the screen (if possible) and run the computer on one side and cable (satellite) tv on the other.
    Is this feasible?
I would appreciate any suggestions from anyone with any experience with this sort of setup.

First of all, thanks to all for your input.
Let me explain why I am doing this and what I have in mind.
This setup is in a music room (I play guitar and sing).
I have already tried it with a 36" flatscreen (plasma) that someone let me borrow to see if it was even feasible.
I have the TV hanging fairly high in a corner of the room.
I have a Logitech webcam (a decent model with stereo mics) mounted on top of the tv.
I control the computer from my music stand (about 15' from the monitor).
I use a Sony stereo receiver with floor speakers for the audio output from the computer and tv.
I use a Logitech trackman, which is a thumb driven trackball (awesome device) as the mouse.
I also use a Logitech solar powered wireless keyboard.
Both easily work from the 15' distance.
I use this computer driven tv monitor for:
    1) playing itunes music and my own recorded music
    2) displaying lyrics to songs I'm working on (sort of like displaying lyrics on a karaoke machine)
    3) using the webcam to record audio and video, to critique songs I'm working on
    4) using the webcam for facetime video chats
    5) watching youtube videos
It actually didn't work too bad with the 36" monitor I was using, but as it was only 720p, it was a little blurry.
I also had trouble with windows being bigger than the screen, making it difficult to resize the window (because I couldn't grab the botttom corner).
It worked very well with the webcam, as several of us could sit in the room and do a group chat with my son.
We could all see him easily, and he could see all of us: much better than crowding around a computer monitor.
The webcam picked up a large part of the room, and we could all sit around and have a very natural visit.
I gave back the borrowed tv and now have decided to buy my own.
So, I am trying to optimize the way it works.
From what I gather, I should be looking for:
    -LCD
    -1080p
-probably 36" (sounds like going to 40" will only make it more blurry, rather than less, is that right?)
-picture in picture if I want to have a tv signal (like a ballgame) playing in the background.
-maybe some indication in the specs that the tv is deisgned for connecting to a computer
    -the Hz makes no difference???
-any other specs that would help with clarity?
I understand it will not be ideal for reading small print.
But I've got other computers that I use for normal web surfing.
I can move closer if I need to (maybe 10'), but I need room to move around while playing.
I suppose I could wait till Apple comes out witheir own "tv", which will probably do exactly what I want.
But who knows when that will be.
And if (when) a better solution is eventually offered by Apple, I can always use the "tv monitor" as a tv.

  • Using a TV as a monitor

I have recently made the move to the MAC world adding a mac mini to my homes wireless network.
Decided to locate the mini in my main lounge using my TV to keep it away from my 4 children.Setting it up and using with my other digital equipment has been a pleasure (wish i used a mac sooner).
My only issue is with the connection to My old Sony Trinitron KV320DX30. I have setup to 800x600 and 50Hz as I think this will be the best option. Have an Apple Video adaptor that gives me two options S video or Comp. I am based in the UK.
With S Video the display is Black & white but the text is clearer. With the Comp lead I get beautiful colour but the text is bearly readable and more fuzzy.
Anyone out there know a way forward and which issue should I try to fix the S Video issue or the comp route?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your old Sony is too old to reasonably be used with a Mac for display purposes. 720 x 480, which is the output typically gotten using S-Video is higher resolution than the Sony supports! You need an HD-TV, and with that, one that supports progressive scan, and/or has overscan support to reasonably use it as a computer monitor. It might be fine to use if all you are doing is showing movies, but for display purposes it hasn't got enough pixels as a computer monitor, unless you have an old Apple II.

  • Can I use my iPad as video monitor with my Canon 5D II?

    HI,
All is in the title. I'd like to use my iPad as video monitor for my Canon 5D II.
(I don't want to use Wireless system)
Maybe a solution with HDMI adaptator and an app? (I guess if we have HDMI video out, we can also have video in... just a software stuff...)
I know a lot of peoples really want to use their iPad like this (and by the way, don't have to buy a new external monitor for Their DSLR)
    Thanks by advance,
    NBS

Right now, there is no way to do that real time.   Sooner or later somebody will write the app for that, but now, there is no way.  You can certainly xfer pics and videos from the camera to watch, but that is as far as it goes.

  • I dropped my macbook pro and the screen is broken can i still use it with an external monitor? Or can I or how do I transfer hard drive files to my mac mini?

I dropped my 17" macbook pro and the screen is broken. Can I still use it with an external monitor? When I plugged it into a monitor I had used it with before, I'm not able to see anything on the macbook screen to control it. It came on but I just got the blue screen with nothing else after typing in my password. (Didn't see the password form just assumed it was there somewhere and it did go from space to blue screen but no desktop icons, files, dock strip at top or anything else, just blank blue screen) so I can't access the system preferences.
Or can I / or how do I, transfer hard drive files to my mac mini? If not salvageable as is can I pull out the hard drive and make it an external harddrive? In otherwords is anything salvageable? It seems it's coming on I just can't access anything. BTW I was told it would cost aprox $1000 to replace the screen! I paid almost $4000 for this thing and it was running great - makes me sick to lose it!

I'd like to promise you that everything will be fine if you just get the monitor going - but it's hard to know what the hardware damage might be. It might be the monitor, or the damage might be greater.
Your best solution would be visit your local Apple Store and let them know what your situation is. They have access to diagnostics you don't, and they might be able to the best way to save your data and keep you computing. It's still not covered, but they can tell you what your current options are.
Um, you might consider investing in a backup drive.
And there other repair options, too. Powerbook Medic http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67 offers reliable repairs, and quotes prices well under Apple's.

Some NAS (network storage) systems do claim to support Time Machine, with varying levels of success. For example, the Synology units have this feature. They're not officially supported by Apple, though.

Can i use my imac as second monitor for my  pc / notebook

Without any knowledge of the year machines you have it's impossible to answer that question. iMacs adn MBA's have been around for many years now so we have no idea of the exact specs your machine have. Remember when posting you need to be complete and paint a picture for us as we aren't there to look for ourselves. Your question should be  posted something like:
" I have a 2011 27" iMac and a 2009 MacBook Air, can I use the iMac as an external display for my MacBook Air?"
BTW what you are referring to is called Target Display Mode. Apple does support that on some 2009-2011 iMacs. You can find additional information at:

  • Use 2008 iMac as second monitor for pc laptop

I have a 2008 iMac and wish to use it as a second monitor for my wife's laptop.  I originally bought a mini display port to vga adaptor cable and realized that it would not work.  I have to go back and buy the mini DVI to vga adapter cable to use it.  But in scouring the google links - I saw that it might not work.  It had said for 2011 and above it might, but did not mention earlier models.  I could use some direction.  If it not possible, I would rather not go and buy a new cable and try.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks  .

You need to set up Virtual Network Computing.

  • Using an emac as a monitor for a mac mini

    Hi,
Sorry if the question was already asked, but a quick search in the forum brought no answer.
I have an emac (OS9) and a mac mini(OSX). I'd like to use the emac as a monitor for the mac mini. Is it possible? How? (Both are G4, although I don't think that's relevant : I don't want to use them at the same time, only to use the Emac as a "screen")
    Many thanks.

I happen to know for a fact that you can use the internal screen on an iMac G3 333, and presumably also a 266 and 233. It has a fixed horizontal frequency so it will only display the resolutions that you can choose with it's motherboard installed: 640x480@117Hz, 800x600@95Hz, and 1024x768@75Hz. With DisplayConfigX I was even able to get other resolutions, as long as I stayed within the 60kHz horizontal frequency. If try to set it to any other resolution and refresh rate it will not work, so the best way to test it is to have another screen as your main screen so that you can set the resolutions on the iMac screen from there. I imagine that the screen in the eMac does not have a fixed horizontal frequency, so if you got the pinouts, you could probably get it working. However, I made a custom video cable for a slot loading iMac G3, and I couldn't get it to work.
