Using Airparrot with an ethernet cable: suddenly, it quit

I live in a large apartment using a collective server and router.  When I moved in a month ago, the only way I could access my Apple TV 3 from my MacBookPro (late 2009), running Snow Leopard and using the third party Airparrot to transmit, was to connect the Apple TV device and my laptop with an ethernet cable.
(I had done this back in the USA, as an experiment; it worked there, so I tried it here.)
With the cable plugged in, Apple TV automatically cut over to mirror my desktop and audio. When I pulled out the cable, Apple TV switched back to whatever I was watching via the WiFi.  Fantastic, if a bit messy cablewise.
However, a week ago, something -- Airparrot suggests an automatic software update -- nudged the Apple TV's small brain and now it refuses to display what's happening on my computer when I plug in the cable. Instead, tells me it's now off the WiFi network.  It becomes obsessed with getting back on and won't mirror what Airparrot is transmitting.
I reset and reclaimed the 5.2.1 software OS per Airparrot's advice.  But it didn't solve the problem.
What's happening here?  Airparrot says the problem lies in the Apple TV software.  Apple says the WiFi/Ethernet switch is built into the Apple TV design and that's just the way it is.  All I know is, it was working before -- for three weeks I watched on the TV set what was displaying on my laptop, using the cable to connect my MBP and the Apple TV device.
Now I can't watch my favorite BBC shows (accessed via a VPN) on the TV screen, where they belong.  Bummer.  Any help understanding what's happening, or better yet, how to work around it, would be appreciated.

I discovered my own answer.  Having recabled my MBP with the Apple TV using an Ethernet cable,  I went into System Preferences/Sharing and enabled Internet Sharing.  From the drop-down menu, I chose Airport (thought it could be any modality in System Preferences/Network) and checked the box for Ethernet.  Went back to Airparrot and System Preferences/Sound to make sure Apple TV was picked as target and audio was enabled.  Now it mirrors my desktop and audio, via Ethernent cable.   All I have to do to switch back to WiFi Apple TV.  Works like a charm.  Whenever you need a direct link for mirroring, this way is easy and reliable.

Hi, I want to use my Capsule just as a back up via wireless. How do I set this up without connecting it with an ethernet cable to either a router or the iMac??

I misunderstood what Time Capsule is and had hoped for a wireless backup device that didn't have to be connected to the router.
The TC is a wireless backup device.. it does not need to be connected to the main router..
The problem is the computer.. not the TC.. the computer has only one wireless card.. if your current internet is by wireless.. then you must choose.. internet or backup.
But my other suggestion will work.. get a wireless USB stick compatible with Mac OS.. there are plenty and cheap.. since you are in the same room as the TC they will work fine.. plug it in and load the driver.. taint hard.
You should do the first backup by ethernet though.. wireless is too slow.. once you have that, you will do fine.
Search ebay for wireless n usb.. Mac compatible..
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-EDUP-Mini-Wireless-11N-300M-USB-LAN-Card-WiFi-Adapte r-Nano-Card-Soft-AP-/150864362939?pt=US_USB_Wi_Fi_Adapters_Dongles&hash=item2320 377dbb#ht_3553wt_1165
As you can see.. they are getting smaller and neater.
I have no idea if it works .. haven't tried one.. but I have used USB wireless stick on the Mac to overcome this issue.
You will need to set static IP .. not hard but you need to set specifics if you do buy one post again for the setup.

Theres almost a trick to it for first time users, goto SETTINGS...General......Cellular (if Verizon) ....Personal Hotspot, turn it on.....turn on wifi on your Mac, select your Iphone.  Enter password.
If you take too long doing it, youll need turn turn off and on real quick the "personal hotspot" slider on the Phone.......then go quick again thur the Mac.

Can this be done? Airport extreme connected wireless in extend mode to connect a wireless Mac Pro with an ethernet cable from the extended airport extreme.

This will work.....IF....you also have an Apple AirPort router configured to provide your wireless network.
In other words, you need to have two Apple AirPort routers to extend a wireless network.
When the AirPort Extreme is configured to "extend" the wireless of the "main" AirPort, it will provide more wireless coverage and the Ethernet ports are enabled, so you could connect your Mac Pro to any of the Ethernet ports and use that as a network and Internet connection.

  • HT4889 Do I connect the two macs with the ethernet cable or do I have to connect both from the ethernet cable to the modem/router

Do I have to connect both macs directly with an ethernet cable without network connection to be able to transfer files/apps from the old to the new as I have tried migrating on the network without success.

They can be connected directly or via an existing network. Turn on File Sharing for the computer that will be sending files.
Using Migration Assistant will work best if the two computers are connected via Firewire cable. This assumes both computers have Firewire ports.

  • Extend wireless airport extreme with airport express with through ethernet cable, extend wireless airport extreme with airport express with through ethernet cable

i want to extend my wirless range i using airport extreme upstairs and airport express down i have ethernet cable linking the two but airport express seems to go wireless and is extremly slow any help appreciated

Start with a "hard reset" of your Express - press and hold its reset button continuously, about five seconds, until its LED flashes rapidly. You will need to reconfigure all its settings.
Connect it to your Extreme with your Ethernet cable. Using AirPort Utility, configure its Internet Connection to "Connect Using" > "Ethernet" as in the following screenshot:
If it had been previously configured to "join" a wireless network and you connect its Ethernet cable to your wired LAN, you may experience what you are describing.

  • Problems Connecting to Airport Directly With an Ethernet Cable

    Hello,
I have a Time Warner cable modem connected to an airport, and everything is working fine for a wireless web connection. But in order to log on to VPN for work, I need to have a cable connection, not a wireless one.
I turned off the airport connection on my computer and first I tried using an ethernet cable to connect my laptop to the Airport. That didn't work. Then I tried connecting my laptop directly to the cable modem, and that didn't work either.
I used to have a DSL modem in my apartment, and if I turned my airport connection off and plugged into the DSL modem, I was still able to access the internet no problem.
Is there something different about plugging into the airport or the cable modem? Do I need change any settings on my computer? Do I need to reboot my computer, or the airport or the cable modem or all three?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Alice

    Hi Alice,
I too have a Time Warner cable Modem and use a VPN with a Ethernet cable connected from my laptop to my Airport extreme. I did not switch ISP's but did switch hardware from a 2Wire portal to the Airport extreme. Could only access the internet and not connect to my Company's network via a VPN. Took a few days but I finally figured out a VPN solution using an ethernet cable hookup to Airport extreme from my work laptop. You will need port setting(s) from your IT department. Below are a few tips.
    1) Open Airport Utility and double click on your extreme network.
    2) At the top move from Airport and click on Internet.
    3) Once there, click on NAT (Network Address Translation)
    4) Check mark "enable default host" but use your static IP adapter address from your work PC/Laptop and not the default (use IPCONFIG to obtain)
    5) Check mark "enable NAT port mapping protocol" and at bottom click on configure port mapping at bottom of NAT
    6) From there your in the advance mode of your Airport Utility, and you add a
service and port(s). I did not click on any service but only defined using my company name and added the port settings.
7 I set the public TCP and UDP ports to 80
    8) The private IP address matched the IP address in the Internet NAT setting I mentioned in #4 above.
    8) The private TCP and UDP ports are the ports to open for your VPN which I got from my IT department. This can be a 5 digit number where mine starts with a 4.
The above worked for my ethernet connect from my work laptop to the Airport Extreme. I now can connect to my company's network using VPN and continue to work from home time to time. 8-)
Good Luck. My next step is to see if my work laptop can use the same settings for my VPN when I go wirelessly with my work Laptop.
    Good Luck....Reener

  • I am trying to connect a Windows 7 / 64 bit to an Epson printer on my Mac.  The printer is hooked into the Mac via USB; the Mac is networked to a Linksys wireless router with an ethernet cable, as is the Windows box. Any tips on how to do this?

I am trying to connect a Windows 7 / 64 bit to an Epson printer on my Mac.  The printer is hooked into the Mac via USB; the Mac is networked to a Linksys wireless router with an ethernet cable, as is the Windows box. I installed the current Bonjour printer services software on the Windows machine, and separately installed the driver software for the Epson printer on the WIndows machine.  Running the bonjour wizard, I get an alert saying 'I don't have sufficient access to my computer to connect to the selected printer'.
The printer has 'sharing' turned on from the Mac end; this works with a Powerbook via the wireless connection.  Sharing is also turned on in the Windows printer control panel for this printer (under properties).  The Mac is a G5 running 10.5.8.  When I try to print a page from the Windows machine it gets hung in the print queue.
Any advice how to proceed would be appreciated!

Problems setting up my TC. Have just bought new iMac(OS 10.6.8) and  TC. I tried to set it up. iMac cannot find it. I have tried direct connection with an ethernet cable to Mac or direct to my wireless router but nothing. Just a flashing orange light. Help for a simpleton please. Have tried reseting TC, but to no avail.

Just updated from 10.6.7 ---> 10.6.8 and had the same issue. Despite having done a clean install from 10.6 and got everything back off my TC, now Time Machine can't find it!
Green light is on, ethernet cable conected, network CP says its conected but nothing. Airport Utility can't find it. Hit reset button, Orange flashing light but still no show in Airport Utility.
But I know its there, as rebooting from 10.6 SL disk shows the backups are still ok?
    Hmm, ideas anyone?

  • Why wont my mac find my time capsule when hard wired with an ethernet cable

Im truying to connec to my time capsle with an ethernet cable and my macbook pro wont fnd it?

    How old is the TC?
Is the TC setup to join a wireless network? If so TC turns off the ethernet ports.. strange but true.
If neither of the above.. it is just normal ML networking with wet string standard.
Reboot the TC.. Reboot the whole network.. restart in order.. modem, router. TC.. other network equipment.. clients.. (some of these are probably one and the same device.. leave 2min between each).

  • HT1941 trying to connect time  apsule to macbook air with the ethernet cable in the WAN port the airport utility doesn't detect it

trying to connect time  capsule to macbook air with the ethernet cable in the WAN port but the airport utility doesn't detect it but when i put it in the LAN one it does but it doesn't let me configure
    any ideas?

Isn't it fun trying to do things without an ethernet cable direct to the computer.. Apple sell a usb to ethernet adapter cable fairly cheap.. makes life a lot easier having something to do hard connections.. or as hard as usb can manage.
Since you have to access the TC by wireless .. press and hold the reset button on the TC for about 10sec until front led flashes rapidly.. don't worry about the ethernet cable.. leave it disconnected.
Now click on the airport symbol and join another network. The TC should revert to its home name.. which will be a combo of Time Capsule and its MAC address. There is no wireless security and you can do the setup.

  • Can I use the airport express as a repeater/range expander but without being connected to the modem with the ethernet cable?

I have a mac pro (2010 mid) to set up the airport

My 2003 Airport Extreme I guess does not provide this "enable extension of other Wireless Device" option in Airport Untility under "Wireless",  because it is too old?
Correct. You will need one of the "square" AirPort Extreme versions if you want to do this.
Another question, do I need to buy a new Airport Extreme to be able to extend my Wi-Fi signal with the New Airport Express I just bought?
Yes, or another new AirPort Express. But, you cannot connect a hard drive to an AirPort Express. You can with an AirPort Extreme in case you were planning to add a hard drive.
One last question, I believe I understood that if I have the new Airport Extreme and use it with my Airport Express to extend the Wi-Fi Signal, I will be able to do this without my DSL Ethernet cable connected to the Airport Express?
The DSL cable will need to be connected to the AirPort that you designate as the "main" router on the network....assuming that you want to be able to connect to the Internet.
The other AirPort will connect using wireless only....assuming that it is located where it can get a good wireless signal.

  • Having trouble with the ethernet cable

    Hello-
All of the sudden the ethernet cable I have been using for my MacBook Pro seems to be causing trouble with my streaming, especially when watching live online streams like from CBS New.com, MSNBC, etc. I had not had any trouble until recently but when I push the ethernet cable in a little bit the stream seems to pick up. This also did happen the last time I installed the latest Flash update. When I do the Software Update, it goes OK, it just seems to be the live video streams.
I thought I would get a new ethernet cable since I do not know how to hook up my Airport Extreme with the odd set up where I am staying.
Is there a better kind of ethernet cable or does it matter what kind I get? any recommendations on a good ethernet cable (brand) I should try?
I would uninstall the latest Flash update, but every time I mess around with Flash it causes trouble, but not the kind of trouble I am having now.

    Moved the AEBS (g) downstairs
That's probably what caused your problems.
    Here are my questions:
    1) Would replacing the AEBS (g) with an Express (n) solve the problem?
    No.
The weakness is in the connection between the main base station and the remote (in this case the AEBS (g).
If you got an Airport Express 802.11n, it would improve the connectivity if it operated in 802.11n mode. However as you have none-802.11n devices which use wireless (ie the iPhones) then you would need to operate in 802.11g mode and therefore the weakness would still be there.
    2) Would ADDING an Express (n) be better?
    See above.
If everything was 802.11n then yes, otherwise no.
    3) Would we be better off buying the wireless adapter for the xbox, rather than plugging it in with ethernet?
If you moved the AEBS back to its original location then I expect yes it would.
