Using airport as a 3G router.

My Devado 3G router just collapsed. Thinking how great it would be having a total Apple home. So insted getting a new Devado, might there be a possibility using an airport, or timecapsule as a 3grouter?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The AirPort is a Wi-F router, and it hasn't got the ability to be used as a 3G router. If you have an iPhone or an Android device, consider the option of turning it into a hotspot to connect all your devices to it.
Another option is to get a MiFi, which is a router that allows you to use your carrier network to connect all your devices

  • Do I use Airport as my main router or do I use it in addition to a router?

So I am looking to improve my wireless signal in my house as well as find a better solution for Time Machine rather than using a portable HDD which I plug in now and again to backup.
My question is this, Do I use an Airport to replace my router or do I use it in addition to my router?
If it can be used in addition to could I place it say half way between my router and further point I would be from my main router so it doubles (Triples rather!) up as a wi-fi range booster?
Summary of home setup: Main router in living room. In apartment with 3 main rooms. Playstation must be wired so router cannot move to a more central location but this means poor signal in bedroom for iPhones / Apple TV.
    Thanks!
    Ray

There's nothing wrong with using a portable HDD to back up when it's convenient for you, and offer the advantage of being more easily transported than a Time Capsule. They're also inexpensive and disposable – features that enhance a comprehensive backup strategy. A Time Capsule is a fine product and I own several of them, but you can buy three 2 TB portable USB hard disk drives for the price of a single 2 TB TC.
(Not that 2 TB is necessarily the best choice though - a smaller capacity may be more appropriate for your requirements.)
Remember that portable Macs use "local snapshots" that are flushed to your Time Machine backup device when it becomes available. Plug it in when it's convenient for you. A Time Capsule is advantageous for those lacking the discipline to do that routinely.

  • Using Airport express for dlink router on a PC

Okay here is my question. I am trying to extend my netwok between my house and our guest house. I have a pc with a dlink router and modem. Bought a airport express thinking I could extend my network signal to the other house. There is about 50-60 feet between houses.
Followed the setup disk instructions onto the PC where the router and modem are. It is not letting me extend my network because I do not have an Airport Base station.
Is there any way to extend the network so I can have access in both houses.
I am not computer "network" savvy so I am a little lost. The guy at the apple store said this is possible. Was he wrong.
Please any help would be much appriciated

Unfortunately, you will not be able to use the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to extend your D-Link's wireless network in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) as only a few non-AirPort routers are known to be compatible.
You might want to consider another D-Link product, like the DWL-G710 Range Extender for your needs.

  • Using Airport Extreme with Linksys Router/Modem

I was just told that my Mac mini is excruiatingly slow on the internet because I am using a Linksys router with Xfinity and that Airport Extreme will be much faster.  And that I should plug Airport Extreme into the modem.  When I checked, I don't have a separate modem.  My Linksys is a combined router/modem.    What should I do?  Do I plug the Airport Extreme into the Linksys box, or do I get a completely different modem that is only a modem?  And, if I plug Airport Extreme into the Linksys box, how do I configure the network for Airport Extreme, and what else do I need to do?   All help greatlly appreciated...I can barely get onto the Apple website!

When I signed up with Xfinity one of the stipulations was that they would not install a router/modem but only a modem. I had heard of problems with their router/modem and I didn't want to go down that path.
I don't but you mighht be able to get them to change out your router/modem for a modem. I would start there by asking them.

  • Using Airport plus additional wireless router (help, possible?)

    Hi All,
I'm curious to know if I can connect to an additional wireless router while I am also connected to my AirPort Extreme.
I just moved into an apartment with an existing wireless internet connection and I currently can't replace my AirPort base station with their router that is provided by Verizon. I also have my own AirPort Extreme that I connect to in order to access an external hard drive wirelessly.
As of now I have been switching between the two of them, which, as you can imagine, can be quite inconvenient. So, I would like to use them at the same time, if that is possible.
Does anyone know if I can set this up and how I go about doing it?
    Thanks so much!

Unfortunately, unlike the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) cannot "Join an existing wireless network."
The only other option, would be to try to establish a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) between the apartment's wireless router and the AEBSn ... but this would only work if that router is WDS-compatible. There are only a few that are.

  • Can I use Airport express as a router or wifi modem?

I'm not good at IT. In fact, i know very little or nothing. So please, do not get annoyed at my stupid question?
The situation is this: I have a MacBook as described below, and a DSL cable connected straight from my laptop to an Ethernet port provided in my room, not through any modem. I'm living in dorm, so that's how school provides dorm students with internet connection. But sometimes, i've got to stay up late and search for information, but the connection automatically drops since it is "light out" time. Now i' considering buying an Airport Express ( or maybe Airport Extreme) to create wireless network. I really don't get how to set it up or how it's gonna work for my situation. I don't have any modem or router around. Can anyone explain the real function of Airport Express? And if possible, can you please tell me is it better for me to buy Airport Express or Airport Extreme?

True! I know that i just need to connect that cable from my laptop into the Ethernet network port. The situation is sometimes i need to stay up late to study but don't have connection past 11:30 (light out time, no more connection). And sometimes, i want to go somewhere else and use wireless network where there isn't one available. For example, my friend's house. I also want to know how the set-up of the Airport Express helps me create wireless network. Do I need a modem or a router to connect Airport express to or else? after setting up, do i need anymore DSL cable or so? Does Airport Express itself function as a wireless access point? One more question: if i set up my wireless connection in my dorm, but later i unplug the Airport Express and go somewhere to plug in, will it still work, or i have to set-up the network again?
I'm not really into network, connection, router or modem much. I don't know much about this stuff. Therefore, i have quite a lot of question. Sorry and thanks for replying me.
Another problem that arises for in your reply is that, school network is administered by staffs of IT department. If i have to to connect my wireless network to school's cabled network, i think i've got quite a lot of explaining to staffs to do. . Anyway, thanks so much for your information.

  • Apple Remote Desktop when using AirPort inside a FiOS Router

I have a verison FiOS Router that is no longer hosting my wireless.  That is now configured through my AirPort TimeCapsule.  How do I set up my system to use Apple Remote Desktop for access over the Internet.  It worked before when I set up Port Forwarding in my FiOS Router.  How do I do in this new configuration?  Thanks

You disabled the wireless radio in your FiOS router, but did you reconfigure it as a bridge? That is, did you also disable the router's NAT & DHCP services? If not, then the FiOS router is still the device that you would configure port mapping/forwarding on. Also, with NAT & DHCP enabled on the FiOS router, the Time Capsule should be in bridge mode.

  • Can I use Airport Express with Comcast router and Apple TV?

I want to connect my iPod Touch (version 8.1.2) to a home stereo wirelessly.  I am considering getting an AE Base Station.  I have a Mac mini running OSX 10.9.5 connected wirelessly using a Comcast router.  I also have an Apple TV, which I have not yet connected to my TV.  Here are some questions.
Are there any problems with doing this.  In particular, can I continue to use the Comcast router?
Also, I have seen some comments saying that the cable modem slowed down when AE was added.  Is that true?  Thanks,
    Owen

The stereo doesn't have wireless (or bluetooth).
My understanding is that the iPod Touch has a built-in airplay transmitter.
If so,  connecting the AE Base Station to my stereo would allow sending music from my iPod to my stereo.
    Is that correct?  Thanks.

  • Can I use airport as a wireless router for all of my other devices?

I do not have any other Internet connection in my home and want to know if I can use this device as a wireless hotspot?

The AirPort base stations can provide a wireless network to these devices but it will not have Internet connectivity unless you already have Interent service provided by an ISP. The AirPort will require an Ethernet connection to an Internet modem for that purpose.

  • How do I extend an existing wireless network using airport express?

    Hi all,
I am trying to extend existing wireless network using airport express, my main router is Belkin

Unfortunately, Apple's "extend" feature is designed to only work with other Apple routers if you are trying to "extend" using wireless only.
It is extremely unlikely that this feature would work with a router from another manufacturer using wireless only.

I have an Airport Extreme as my router and am using time capsule to extend the network in my new house. My ISP is only providing me 4-5 ip addresses and wants me to set up my router to issue out new ip addresses for all my devices. How do I fix this?Help.
They said I need to change my settings to NAT settings. I haven't been able to figure out or find anything. I have also spoken to Apple Support on the phone for hours without being able to figure out how to do this ( i don't think he knew much either lol.) Please help me because I've got about 15-20 devices in my house that require to be connected to the internet and this is just making things ridiculously slow and painful for me.
    Thanks!

It is on DHCP & NAT under router mode yet my isp is still the one issuing ip addresses to my devices instead of the router issuing them

  • I have Verizon FiOS service for phone, internet and TV but I only have one TV hooked up for it for just basic cable service with no DVR and no need for widgets.  Can I use an Airport Extreme as my router and not use the FiOs router?

I want to use an Airport Extreme as my router.  I currently have a Verizon FiOS router.  I have Verizon for phone, internet and TV.  However, TV-wise, I just have a basic service for one TV with just a regular box.  No HD, no DVR.  Don't need access to a menu, widgets, on-demand.  Can I eliminate the FiOS Router and just use the Airport Extreme and still have phone and internet?

I know that it will increase my wireless coverage in my house but will it increase the speeds?
Not sure what you are asking here.  The AirPort Extreme is only going to be as fast as the Internet connection that it receives.....which is 75/75. It cannot take a 75/75 connection and make it go any faster.
If you locate the AirPort Extreme in an area where you need more wireless signal coverage, the AirPort Extreme would deliver 75/75 in that area.  But, keep in mind that the AirPort Extreme must connect to the FIOS router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.
If you are asking if the AirPort Extreme can wirelessly connect to the FIOS modem router, and extend the FIOS wireless network, the AirPort Extreme would not be compatible with a FIOS product for that purpose.

  • I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work?

I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work? And one more thing about the setup, the linksys router shich acts as a base is in a different room as the airport express which i wanted to use for airplay. So I'm hoping to hook up the Airport express via wireless signal. If i can set it up, can someone pls help me out by posting detailed instructions. Thanks so much!

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".

  • How can I set up airport extreme using my existing 11.g router

My existing router (ZyXEL - supplied by Telefonica with my land line) is an 11.g type and does not allow me to use iPad/iPod in certain areas of my home.  Yesterday I bought an Airport Extreme and was told that I could either connect my existing router's ADSL line directly into the Extreme and connect to my Mac and other peripherals using USB or ethernet cable, or connect from the existing router.
I tried each method using Airport Utility in each case and also trying the different options offered in the set-up.  It doesn't seem to want to work.
    Can anyone help me please.

Further to my earlier (and first) posting, I have been playing with the airport extreme and it now works via my existing router but, it's range is less than 15 metres and that is no better than my existing 11.g router.
Does anyone know how I can increase this range?
p.s. any help in the simplest terms please.

  • Do I need to plug my airport express into a modem to use it as its own router?

I want to use my airport express as a router. Do I need to plug it into a modem to do this or can I do this without pluging anything into it.

The AirPort Express is a wireless router only, with no modem on board.
You will need to connect the Express to a broadband modem if you want to be able to access the Internet.
