Using airport extreme with new comcast wireless modem

I have a new Comcast modem that provides wireless. I currently use an Airport extreme and want to keep my existing network yet hook up the new Comcast modem to update their equipment. Is this as simple as just replacing the old modem?

Whenever you make a modem change, you should plan to reset the AirPort Extreme back to factory default settings, and then set it up again to work with the new modem/router.
The reason for this is that AirPort Extreme retains the settings that it used to connect to the "old" modem, and it is extremely unlikely that those same settings could be used effectively with a "new" modem.

Configuring a new Airport Extreme with an existing Wireless Modem Router

I have an existing Wireless Modem Router (brand: Riger) and have an existing wireless network. Recently purchased an AirPort.
What is the best way to install a new AirPort Extreme? I know i have to connect the AirPort Extreme to the modem via ethernet cable.
Do i allow the AirPort to use the existing setting from my old wireless modem router?
Or do i create a new network with different name and password?
Anybody can help or show me where i can look up on this?

Since the new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) will be connected to the existing Wireless Modem Router by Ethernet, it should be reconfigured as a bridge.
(ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AEBSn > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode))
As a bridge, the AEBSn will allow the existing router to continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for all network clients.

Using Airport Extreme with a Netopia Wireless Router 2247NWG

Hi, I'm trying to set up an airport extreme base station (AEBS) with a netopia wireless router and my XP SP3 Laptop. I have the extreme plugged into the router and the set up of the AEBS went fine. I have a solid green light on the AEBS and it appears to be working OK. When I move to another room in the house, I have two wireless networks available - the netopia wireless router and the AEBS. Whichever of the networks I connect to, the signal strength is extremely poor and the other is showing available with 5 bars. When I connect to the strong network, the signal goes weak and the original network is available with 5 bars. I've tried disabling the wireless on the router but this doesn't help. The router network is still showing as available with 5 bars but I can't connect to it.
First day with my MAC gear (haven't even opened the MacBook box yet) and I need help!!!!!!!!!!!

So, today I finally broke down and plugged them both into the two available ports in the back of the AEBSn via ethernet cables. My question is: Do I have to "turn off" the airport connection in order to make the ethernet connection the default connection?
That might help but it isn't necessary. You can simply rearrange the order of items in the Network preference pane.

Using Airport Extreme with a Airport Time Capsule to update Blu-Ray player

I was wondering if it were possible to hook up a blu-ray player to a second Airport Extreme to update the player? I have a Time Capsule in my home office and a blu-ray on the other end of the house. The blu-ray needs updates. I am wondering if I can use an Airport Extreme as an "extension" wireless unit hooked up to my blu-ray player to have it connected to the net?

You have a few options to do what you want.
Perhaps you were thinking of the AirPort Express when you mentioned AirPort Extreme. The AirPort Express can be configured to "extend" the main wireless network created by the Time Capsule and the ethernet port will be "live" so that you could connect to your BluRay player via ethernet.
An AirPort Extreme would work as well, but you may not need the other extra ethernet ports on the Extreme and extra expense for features that you may not use.
I take it that running an ethernet cable to the BluRay player is not feasible in your current situation.
You may not have thought about the next option, which would make use of a pair ethernet powerline adapters. One device plugs into an AC socket at the head end and another plugs into AC at the BluRay end. The adapters use the wiring in your home to transmit the ethernet signal. You would run a short ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports on your AirPort Extreme to the adapter and do the same at the BluRay end.
This type of connection will almost always provide a faster signal than wireless, so you may want to check these out as an option. Best Buy will have several to choose from.

Airport extreme with new modem

Hi All,
We just got a new modem when upgrading our internet service, and it'll work directly plugged into our Mac (though it seems annoyingly slow at first glance) but not through the Airport Extreme. My husband tried just going through the set-up process again, but it didn't seem like anything needed to be changed. The green light is on on the Airport, but we got nothin' for the laptops, Roku, printer, etc. (or even the Mac it's connected to if we have the ethernet cable in the Airport). The modem says it's an Westell ADSL2+ router, and looking at a few discussions here, it seems that that means it's a "gateway" not a modem?? What does that mean for our setup? Please go easy on me--I'm not good at setting stuff up! Many, many thanks!

UPDATE: AT&T sent us the new modem with our internet upgrade and we assumed it was necessary to use it. I tried everything: unplugging both in a variety of combinations, resetting passwords, finally starting over with the Airport factory settings and doing the setup (in bridge mode) from scratch. Nothing worked. I had finally come to the conclusion that AT&T's modem does not support Airport and we would have to buy a router from them. (The Westell is labeled modem+router, but I was unable to figure out how to get wireless directly from it.) Finally, after speaking with someone from AT&T, my wife just said "Why don't we just try plugging in our old modem." And...voilà! Back in business.
Moral of story: just because they send you new equipment doesn't mean you need to use it.

Is there any way to print wirelessly using Airport Extreme with an older printer (HP Laserjet 2100 TN) - no USB connection.

I have an older printer and currently use a Cisco wireless router with Network Magic software which allows me to leave my 30 pin printer connected to the desktop computer and share the printer with everything on the network. Does the Airport Extreme allow for this? I am just connecting one that I purchased but can only find documentation on connecting the printer via USB (which my old printer does not have). The printer is late 90's vintage, but its comercial grade and is still one of the best printers I have used so I want to keep it going for now.

I don't really know much about anything BUT with that said, I have PCs, I have an old commerical work horse HP laser printer that works with the Airport Express as a print server through my wireless router. But having problems with my wireless router, never my AE, now how to change from WEP to WPA etc.for a new wireless router. Maybe I need to look into the Extreme. Good luck

Using Airport Extreme with Linksys Router/Modem

I was just told that my Mac mini is excruiatingly slow on the internet because I am using a Linksys router with Xfinity and that Airport Extreme will be much faster. And that I should plug Airport Extreme into the modem. When I checked, I don't have a separate modem. My Linksys is a combined router/modem. What should I do? Do I plug the Airport Extreme into the Linksys box, or do I get a completely different modem that is only a modem? And, if I plug Airport Extreme into the Linksys box, how do I configure the network for Airport Extreme, and what else do I need to do? All help greatlly appreciated...I can barely get onto the Apple website!

When I signed up with Xfinity one of the stipulations was that they would not install a router/modem but only a modem. I had heard of problems with their router/modem and I didn't want to go down that path.
I don't but you mighht be able to get them to change out your router/modem for a modem. I would start there by asking them.

Do I need my Airport Extreme with my Comcast router?

I have an Airport Extreme - it's about four years old.
I also have Comcast Xfinity, but will likely switch to the business service - 75mb down, 15mb up. I just bought a Mini to use as a server for our home and business use.
Here's my question: Should I be using the Airport Extreme at all? I thought about buying the newest model, as I'm sure it's much faster. I have two computers connected through the AE using Ethernet, and I am not sure if I can do that with the Comcast box (can't look right now)
Any advice for me? Thanks in advance.

You wrote that your Extreme is about four years old. If it is a dual band model that was first produced in March, 2009 it conveys the advantage of its ability to simultaneously create both 2.4 and 5 GHz wireless networks, while the Arris can only create a 2.4 GHz network. 2.4 GHz can be crowded and is susceptible to a variety of other interference whereas 5 GHz is less so. On the other hand, the Arris has a battery backup feature which enables its use, if only for a few minutes, during a power failure. The Extreme's LAN ports are also Gigabit - it's not clear if the Arris's are.
Therefore, each one has its advantages, but technically you do not need an Extreme unless your 2.4 GHz wireless performance is unacceptable, if you want to use the Extreme's "Guest Network", its Gigabit ports, USB / hard disk sharing, or its other attractive features. A genuine Apple AirPort Base Station is also required to fully implement some features particular to Mountain Lion, such as the ability to wake a sleeping Mac and use it remotely over the Internet. In addition to those, the current production model conveys the new 802.11ac wireless protocol which may become more important as wireless devices continue to proliferate.
The decision to upgrade your Extreme would be justified if you require any of those features, but if your network needs are satisfied with your current equipment, there is no pressing need to change anything.

Using AirPort Extreme with U-verse RG 3801 HGV

There is a lot of good info reading these threads but am going to ask specific questions for my situation. Just had U-verse installed last week - Voice and Internet only - formerly we were DSL voice and internet. No U-verse TV. The tech installed the 3801 HGV (how to upgrade to an AT&T N router is seperate issue....that's not my question here - I have read the answers to that in the forum).3801 HGV working fine, got my new 2WIRE605 wifi network broadcasting OK to our laptops, ipads, iphones, etc. Then I plugged in with network cable the AirPort Extreme to the 3801 LAN1 output port, put the AirPort in bridged mode using AirPort utility - zero other changes. Now - the Apple is broadcasting our previous network name with previous password. The Pace is broadcasting the 2WIRE605 network with new password. Our home devices can select either network that's visible - they are both visible. Devices connected to our AirPort are showing details that they are connected to an N radio. Can I leave it like this? Why turn off the wifi broadcasting of the 3801? I didnt follow the long instructions of how to change all the settings....it just seems to be "working". What is happening and what are the pros and cons of way I have it "configured"???(accidentally ha). Thanks in advance for your responses.

You seem to have two wifi networks that are working and competing with each other. Your wireless devices will lock on to the strongest signal rendering the other network unused. If you have a big area to cover with your wifi, you could physically space out your routers for more wifi coverage (i.e. one network upstairs and another one downstairs); Or you could have all the wireless N capable devices connecting to the Airport and all the slower ones to the Pace; Or for seamless coverage over a wide area, change the SSID (name) of the networks to match (the same name) with each router broadcasting on a different channel (6 and 11) - Google "2 routers same SSID".

Replace Airport Extreme with new AE(802.11n) on G5?

My existing wireless network includes the last version of the Airport Extreme (b/g?) and an Airpot Express is working fine. But since I'm planning to go to an Intel-based Tower sometime in the near future, I bought the new AE(n). I haven't installed it and wanted to check here first to see if it's worth the trouble before I have a MAC that can take advantage of the newer tech.
Is there any advantage for PPC-based MACs? Is there a way to safely save the configuration so I can revert to my existing setup if the new one proves problematical?

my network is exactly the same as your so I'll give it a try. First update to the latest version of the OS (10.4.8) & run software update till you have nothing else to update. I configured mine using the setup and then going back and tweaking some of the settings. 1, find a channel that no-one is using in you area. sometimes wireless base stations on the same channel cause interference with each other. 2, after i set up my new airport extreme and setup the express to extend the network. i did find that the setup program setup the express as 802.11b only and it did slow up my network a bit (bump it to 802.11B/G). overall the performance was ok. I was getting 700kbs with my old extreme set up my way and with the new extreme I've been averaging 750kbs to 800kbs (iTunes tv show download)on my iMac G5. about the only thing that concerns me IMO is that with the old extreme, you could set the base station to any type you wanted to in my case "802.11G only" was the way I set up my old extreme. with the new one you only get 2 choices 802.11N or 802.11N B/G compatabile.
either way, I'm happy with my new base station. and I'm sure that when you do buy your next mac you'll certainly see a speed increase.

Older Airport Extreme with new Airport Express

I have a new Airport Express and an older Airport Extreme (I think 1rst gen). I have been using the Extreme for a few years now and just got the express to help me extend the extreme. The Extreme's signal is very weak in some parts of my house. I cannot hook the two together via ethernet. Needs to be wireless. What's the best method? I only use the wi-fi for internet access and tv (netflix, HBOGO, etc). I do not share printers or hard drives. I'm wondering if the new express is better (range) than my older extreme? Should I use the express as my main base station?

Your Extreme should still provide better overall range over the 2nd gen 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station, so I would still recommend that you leave the Extreme as your "main" router.
You will want to use the following instructions to extend the wireless network from this Apple Support article.
The key to success if extending the Extreme is to place the Express within a 25+ dB SNR range of the Extreme as it can only repeat the signal with the same bandwidth that it receives it. If the signal is very weak the Express may not even be able to extend it at all.
Check out the following AirPort User tip for details on optimal base station placement. Please post back your results.

Can I use Airport Extreme with a westell 7500

I have Verizon DSL with a Westell 7500. Can I connect the Airport Exreme as the router and
use the 7500 as a modem only?

When you configure the Westell device for simple bridge mode operation, it will no longer provide the PPPoE connection credentials, so you will need to setup the PPPoE connection on the AirPort Extreme.
AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon
Click the Internet Connection tab
Connect Using = PPPoE
Enter your ISP user name...(probably your email address).... and password
Leave the Service Area name completely blank
Connection = Always On
Disconnet if Idle= Never
Update to save settings
Power down the entire network
Wait a moment or two
Start the modem first, let it run a minute or two by itself
Start the AirPort Extreme next the same way
Continue starting devices one at a time about a minutes apart until everything is powered back up

New Set up of Airport Extreme with New Macbook and 'Old' Mac Mini

I have wirelessly connected my new Mac Book to Airport Extreme, and have tested the connection by using a shared printer. I have connected my old Mac Mini (OSX 10.3.9) via Wired LAN.The MacMini does not recognise a connection to the Airport Extreme. I would like to share files between the MacBook and the Mini, but they do not 'See' each other. What have I not done correctly?

A restart did not change anything.
I have been able to Ping each IP address succesfully from each machine, so the only aspect I can't understand is why each machine is not showing when I view the Network in Finder

Using airport extreme to share a wireless printer

I want to share my wireless printer with a pc laptop located elsewhere in the house. I cannot send documents to the printer via the laptop. Is it necessary to connect my airport extreme device to my printer via a usb cable? And then what must I do if that is the case? If not, how do I get the pc to talk to the printer?

No, not if your printer has wireless capability. I assume that your Mac is printing OK using wireless, correct?

That would be a question for the support folks at the printer manufacturer. They will likely ask if you have setup the PC for printing capability. If not, they should be able to provide some tips for this.

I just have read and have not come to the complete conclusion that the Airport extreme base station is a standalone wireless router.
I would like this if it is a wireless standalone router as I want to but a pair of wireless airtunes router for music around the house keeping the Airport Extreme in my room where the airtunes routers would not be as I have the computer in my room and I have iTunes right there and would not need the airtunes routers in my computer room.

The AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) does NOT have a built-in DSL/Cable modem. You will still require a Cable modem in order to access your ISP's Internet service.

The AEBS IS a wireless router, but it is NOT a combination wireless router & cable modem.
