Using AirPort Extreme with U-verse RG 3801 HGV

There is a lot of good info reading these threads but am going to ask specific questions for my situation.  Just had U-verse installed last week - Voice and Internet only - formerly we were DSL voice and internet.  No U-verse TV.  The tech installed the 3801 HGV (how to upgrade to an AT&T N router is seperate issue....that's not my question here - I have read the answers to that in the forum).3801 HGV working fine, got my new 2WIRE605 wifi network broadcasting OK to our laptops, ipads, iphones, etc.  Then I plugged in with network cable the AirPort Extreme to the 3801 LAN1 output port, put the AirPort in bridged mode using AirPort utility - zero other changes.  Now - the Apple is broadcasting our previous network name with previous password.  The Pace is broadcasting the 2WIRE605 network with new password.  Our home devices can select either network that's visible - they are both visible.  Devices connected to our AirPort are showing details that they are connected to an N radio.  Can I leave it like this?  Why turn off the wifi broadcasting of the 3801? I didnt follow the long instructions of how to change all the settings....it just seems to be "working".  What is happening and what are the pros and cons of way I have it "configured"???(accidentally ha).  Thanks in advance for your responses.

You seem to have two wifi networks that are working and competing with each other. Your wireless devices will lock on to the strongest signal rendering the other network unused. If you have a big area to cover with your wifi, you could physically space out your routers for more wifi coverage (i.e. one network upstairs and another one downstairs); Or you could have all the wireless N capable devices connecting to the Airport and all the slower ones to the Pace; Or for seamless coverage over a wide area, change the SSID (name) of the networks to match (the same name) with each router broadcasting on a different channel (6 and 11) - Google "2 routers same SSID".

  • Is there any way to print wirelessly using Airport Extreme with an older printer (HP Laserjet 2100 TN) - no USB connection.

I have an older printer and currently use a Cisco wireless router with Network Magic software which allows me to leave my 30 pin printer connected to the desktop computer and share the printer with everything on the network. Does the Airport Extreme allow for this? I am just connecting one that I purchased but can only find documentation on connecting the printer via USB (which my old printer does not have). The printer is late 90's vintage, but its comercial grade and is still one of the best printers I have used so I want to keep it going for now.

I don't really know much about anything BUT with that said, I have PCs, I have an old commerical work horse HP laser printer that works with the Airport Express as a print server through my wireless router.  But having problems with my wireless router, never my AE, now how to change from WEP to WPA etc.for a new wireless router.  Maybe I need to look into the Extreme.  Good luck

  • Can I use Airport Extreme with a westell 7500

I have Verizon DSL with a Westell 7500.  Can I connect the Airport Exreme as the router and
use the 7500 as a modem only?

When you configure the Westell device for simple bridge mode operation, it will no longer provide the PPPoE connection credentials, so you will need to setup the PPPoE connection on the AirPort Extreme.
    AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
    Click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = PPPoE
Enter your ISP user name...(probably your email address).... and password
Leave the Service Area name completely blank
    Connection = Always On
    Disconnet if Idle= Never
    Update to save settings
    Power down the entire network
    Wait a moment or two
Start the modem first, let it run a minute or two by itself
Start the AirPort Extreme next the same way
Continue starting devices one at a time about a minutes apart until everything is powered back up

  • Using airport extreme with WD 2tb hard drive

So I dont want to pay someone to do this so I hope someone can help me out here. I have an IMAC with two macbook pro's in my house. I use the airport extreme and just bought a Mybook for the mac WD 2 TB hard drive. I have attach the hard drive to my extreme and it seems that the backup thru time machine work find but I cannot see the back up on the hard drive at all and sometimes I cannot access the drive and also I get an error that tiem machine couldn't back up. The intial backup did work though.
Now I want to be able to take all my movies, music, pictures and files off my imac and macbook pro's and keep on the hard drive. I than would like to be able to access the files at anytime with any computer in the house and to also be able to stream my music and movies to my apple tv. Yes I know that I must have itunes running to stream my music and movies to my apple tv.
I am clueless on how to do this. I  bought the HDD to be able to free up the space on my IMAC and macbook pro's. I also would like to be able to manually tell the HDD when I want to backup the files and not on a time. So how can I do all this stuff. I have over 200gb of pictures and 200gb of movies and music that need to get off my computer onto the HDD soon before the wife get mad at me. We bought this to do this and we are goign crazy on how to do it.

Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme. However, this does seem to work for some users while some users have some success and some have no success.
The bottom line is that this is not a reliable method to protect your important data, so if you want to continue to try this, it might be a good idea to have a secondary backup plan in place in case you cannot access your Time Machine backups when you need them most.
Now I want to be able to take all my movies, music, pictures and files off my imac and macbook pro's and keep on the hard drive.
If you do this, you are moving the "original" media libraries to the drive at the AirPort Extreme....and you will have no backups when...not if...the hard drive has a problem.
Surely, you plan to have backups of the media libraries, correct?  Where will the additional drive needed for the backups reside on your network?

  • Using Airport Extreme with Linksys Router/Modem

I was just told that my Mac mini is excruiatingly slow on the internet because I am using a Linksys router with Xfinity and that Airport Extreme will be much faster.  And that I should plug Airport Extreme into the modem.  When I checked, I don't have a separate modem.  My Linksys is a combined router/modem.    What should I do?  Do I plug the Airport Extreme into the Linksys box, or do I get a completely different modem that is only a modem?  And, if I plug Airport Extreme into the Linksys box, how do I configure the network for Airport Extreme, and what else do I need to do?   All help greatlly appreciated...I can barely get onto the Apple website!

When I signed up with Xfinity one of the stipulations was that they would not install a router/modem but only a modem. I had heard of problems with their router/modem and I didn't want to go down that path.
I don't but you mighht be able to get them to change out your router/modem for a modem. I would start there by asking them.

  • Using airport extreme with new comcast wireless modem

I have a new Comcast modem that provides wireless. I currently use an Airport extreme and want to keep my existing network yet hook up the new Comcast modem to update their equipment. Is this as simple as just replacing the old modem?

Is this as simple as just replacing the old modem?
Whenever you make a modem change, you should plan to reset the AirPort Extreme back to factory default settings, and then set it up again to work with the new modem/router.
The reason for this is that AirPort Extreme retains the settings that it used to connect to the "old" modem, and it is extremely unlikely that those same settings could be used effectively with a "new" modem.

  • Using Airport Extreme with a Netopia Wireless Router 2247NWG

Hi, I'm trying to set up an airport extreme base station (AEBS) with a netopia wireless router and my XP SP3 Laptop. I have the extreme plugged into the router and the set up of the AEBS went fine. I have a solid green light on the AEBS and it appears to be working OK. When I move to another room in the house, I have two wireless networks available - the netopia wireless router and the AEBS. Whichever of the networks I connect to, the signal strength is extremely poor and the other is showing available with 5 bars. When I connect to the strong network, the signal goes weak and the original network is available with 5 bars. I've tried disabling the wireless on the router but this doesn't help. The router network is still showing as available with 5 bars but I can't connect to it.
First day with my MAC gear (haven't even opened the MacBook box yet) and I need help!!!!!!!!!!!

So, today I finally broke down and plugged them both into the two available ports in the back of the AEBSn via ethernet cables. My question is: Do I have to "turn off" the airport connection in order to make the ethernet connection the default connection?
That might help but it isn't necessary. You can simply rearrange the order of items in the Network preference pane.
Search on the internet and you will find many ways to check the speed. One is http://us.mcafee.com/root/speedometer/default.asp

  • Using airport extreme with apple tv

Hi, I am by no means an expert on these matters so, I thought I would put my question out there for the experts to comment on. I currently use 2 Apple TVs on my wifi network and am wondering if I connect the Apple TVs via ethernet cable to an airport extreme, would it improve the download and streaming of content to the Apple TVs?
Current system, iMac OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 (14D136), 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5, 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, ADSL internet, network has good coverage throughout the area. Many thanks.

It can't improve upon the bandwidth delivered by your ISP, but what it will do is avoid the vagaries of wireless communication. Whenever practicable, use Ethernet. The AppleTV will automatically favor Ethernet over Wi-Fi.

  • Can't print using Airport Extreme with a DELL P1500 printer

I connected my Dell P1500 printer to the USB port of the Airport Extreme. I can see the printer under USB printers in Airport Utility, but cannot print.
Note: I can print when I am connected directly to my MacBook Pro.
    Please help.

You will need to use the AirPort Utility to both verify that the AEBSn "recognizes" the USB drive and to enable File Sharing. Once those two steps have been completed, you can then try to access it from your Vista PC.
Note: The AEBSn will not "recognize" a drive formatted in NTFS connected to its USB port. It would have to be formatted in either FAT32 or HFS+.

  • Using Airport Extreme with a Airport Time Capsule to update Blu-Ray player

I was wondering if it were possible to hook up a blu-ray player to a second Airport Extreme to update the player? I have a Time Capsule in my home office and a blu-ray on the other end of the house. The blu-ray needs updates. I am wondering if I can use an Airport Extreme as an "extension" wireless unit hooked up to my blu-ray player to have it connected to the net?
    Thank you!
    John

    Welcome to the discussions, John!
You have a few options to do what you want.
Perhaps you were thinking of the AirPort Express when you mentioned AirPort Extreme. The AirPort Express can be configured to "extend" the main wireless network created by the Time Capsule and the ethernet port will be "live" so that you could connect to your BluRay player via ethernet.
An AirPort Extreme would work as well, but you may not need the other extra ethernet ports on the Extreme and extra expense for features that you may not use.
I take it that running an ethernet cable to the BluRay player is not feasible in your current situation.
You may not have thought about the next option, which would make use of a pair ethernet powerline adapters. One device plugs into an AC socket at the head end and another plugs into AC at the BluRay end. The adapters use the wiring in your home to transmit the ethernet signal. You would run a short ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports on your AirPort Extreme to the adapter and do the same at the BluRay end.
This type of connection will almost always provide a faster signal than wireless, so you may want to check these out as an option. Best Buy will have several to choose from.

  • Can i use airport extreme, with apple tv and pc without the internet

While renting/buying films on itunes is all well and good, my wireless capacity is poor, if i buy airport extreme, without connecting it to the internet, will it stream my films on itunes from the PC to apple TV?

...if i buy airport extreme, without connecting it to the internet, will it stream my films on itunes from the PC to apple TV?
Yes. An Internet connection is not required. However, of course, the AirPort or your Apple TV will not be able to stream content from the Internet.

  • Using AirPort Extreme with a linksys router--advisable?

I've been told that only 4 Windows Home version machines can connect at a time to any router so connecting AirPort through a linksys router and then to the modem will enable more Windows connections than AirPort Extreme alone (8 vs. 4). Is this true and if so, are there any drawbacks to setting it up this way?  Will AirPort Extreme still function as well as if it is connected directly to the modem without a linksys router?

    I've been told....
They are pulling your leg. The AirPort Extreme can handle up to 50 wireless connections. We have 30+ PC laptops running at my grandson's school all connected to one AirPort Extreme.
Don't know about the Linksys, but imagine that it is about the same. If you have the model number, check on a Linksys support area or post back and someone here may know.
What is possible.....is that someone configured a router to only allow 4 devices to connect. There are various ways that this could have been done.

  • Can't connect Canon MP560 wirelessly using Airport Extreme with MacBook Pro

My Canon MP560 is failing to connect to the access point.  It recognizes the access point/network I would like to connect to but when I enter in my password it fails to connect and tells me to check access point settings.  I used this exact same printer but different router in my old house and everything worked well!  I'm thinking this is a Mac thing that I can't seem to figure out.  I have the lastest Canon driver updates for Mac and use 10.6.8 software on my Macbook Pro.
This is how the printer instructs me on the panel.
    a. Select Wireless LAN setup
    b. Select Easy Settings
    c. Select Access Point
    d. Enter Password
    e. Fails to connect..........
    Please help.
    Brice.

    Hi Tesserax,
i have the same issue as mountie30 with the MP560 but it's not working
    i have a airport express.
    i was following your instructions:
''To get to this feature within the AirPort Utility, go to the utility's menu bar and first choose Base Station, and then, Add Wireless Clients...''
the problem is, base station is in light gray and i can't click on it.
i re-plugged my printer into my imac so it detects it again. (it still says printer offline in settings)
i have no clue what to do.
    please help
    thanks

  • Problems using Airport Extreme with tethered laptop to xbox.

    Here is the setup...
I have the AEBS sitting in the other room about 20 feet away.
Its plugged into the modem (motorola SURFboard) with a 2 foot Cat5 cable
The Base station is running basically all default settings minus the wireless is set to use WPA/WPA2 and the ports for the xbox 360 are forwarded as well as a DHCP reservation for the xbox to insure its always on the ip with the ports forwarded.
I have my computer in my room and im using it to bridge a connection to my xbox. (basically using the laptop as a wireless adapter) The xbox will connect to live and sign me in and everything. As soon as I start playing a game or something like photo party the connection will slowly start to drop out. If im in photo party i wont be able to see pictures and stuff and in games it boots me from the game. I need to be able to fix this. it doesnt make any sense because on my laptop it says im hitting 26Mbps and when i actually use my laptop it is able to download at up to speeds of 600 KB/s. (I do turn the downloads off when i try to play on the xbox.) SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!!!

Any torrents running on the PC? Any chance your isp is throttling your connection?

  • Airport Extreme with Gigabit Ethernet - Does it have jumbo frame support?

Please, can I get definite answer to this question? I do not need speculations as I read some reviews already. Can we have Apple finally put complete specification of the product rather than "popular one" with attachement of protocol numbers?
I just need simple answer possibly from Apple engineering team to the following questions:
    1. Does current Airport Extreme have support for jumbo frames (everything above 1500bytes per frame)? (if one does not know what that is them perhaps understanding acronym "MTU" can help a bit)
    2. If there is support then what is the maximum supported size of jumbo frame? (Some products do not go above 6k and I read some statistics that traffic somwhere is usually 66% at about 4k jumbo frames and above that there is not much...)
    3. If there is no support then does Apple plan on update for this (firmware or hardware) in the future?
Please, do not tell me that someoene ran something with jumbo frame and it worked as I tried yesterday LaCie Ethernet drive with supposedly setup (I set it myself) of jumbo frame 4k and on soft reboot of the drive it worked when connected to Airp[ort Extreme, but after hard reboot the disk is not visible anymore. I will recover the disk, but I need to understand if I have chance of using jumbo frames that tremendously improve performance with large files (e.g. try movies stored for AppleTV on network drive) when using Airport Extreme with its gigabit Ethernet... or that is just Gigabit Ethernet for product marketing purposes only.
I just need reliable answer by product specification that should be on paper at Apple, but it is not so I hope that one of guys here has access to some engineering team.
    Thank you,
    Maciek Samsel
