Using Airport for ethernet in Lion

How do you find and setup up ethernet networked printers in Lion using Airport routers?  It used to  have a list of DHCP clients and I cannot find it in the new OS...

I'll bet you're running AirPort Utility 6.0. To put it charitably, it is less robust than its sibling AirPort Utility 5.6.
You can't erase AU 6.0 but you can ignore it. Use AU 5.6 instead.

  • Use airport for internet and ethernet for local?

Hi. Ive searched around and cant find an answer for this.
I have a 27" imac connected to my router and all works fine for accessing the internet.
I have several other devices close by that I want to connect via ethernet. If i connect the imac to another router via ethernet I can browse my local devices but loose internet connectivity. It is as if the imac will suspend the airport connection while the ethernet cable is connected. I don't want my second router to act as a bridge as it doesn't support N speeds.
Essentially, I want the imac to use airport for internet and the ethernet port for local files.... The only workaround I have is to unplug the ethernet cable from the back of the imac when i want to use the internet. I'm hoping it's just a DNS issue, but cant seem to resolve it.
I do not need internet connectivity for the other devices and don't see how i can do that without enabling the wireless side of my second router and then creating a bridge...
    Any suggestions?

It is as if the imac will suspend the airport connection while the ethernet cable is connected.
The Connection Order on your iMac is set so that if both AirPort and Ethernet are "on", the iMac will give priority to the Ethernet connection.
If you want to configure your iMac so that it gives priority to an AirPort connection if both AirPort and Ethernet are "on", give this a try:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) and open Network
Click on the small gear icon at the bottom of the connection list on the left
Click on Set Service Order and drag AirPort to the top of the connection order list
    Click OK, then click Apply
Now, if both AirPort and Ethernet are active, your iMac will give priority to the AirPort connection. If you want to connect using Ethernet, you will have to turn AirPort off by clicking the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of your computer screen.

I can't stand peremptory affirmations like "Nothing is wrong with Safari".
Thousands of users can't be wrong (see the discussions).
If I read you the right way, it's never software' fault, it's the user who's the culprit.
    Amazing!
In this very case, the fact is we can't give to "christinefromfonthill" a good solution because weren't sitting in front of her Mac.
You give her a good advice which could, perhaps, lead to an improvement.
But must also admit that Safari is a very slow browser compared to Firefox or Chrome.
And you can't ignore all the problems which arose when upgrading to Lion and were related to the new build and specs of Safari 5.1.
The best example is the apparition of "garbage type" (use of Last Resort font) when reading numerous sites. This never occured before and is the direct consequence of Safari compliance to Web Open Type. This standard prohibits the use of Type 1 Postscript Fonts and is the reason why so many people are in trouble.
I use a Mac for more than 25 years.
I am a very "clean" user who hates the bells and whistles of third party.
My Mac is always up-to-date and despite all my Mac loving care, I run into some problems.
Imagine the nightmare which can occurs for the vulgum pecus who isn't, by definition, a power user aware of all the requirements for running a System in optimal conditions.
May be Safari is one step in advance on its time but lambda users are paying the price for it.

  • Using Airport And Ethernet Together

Having read Christopher Breen's solution to using Airport and Ethernet together,
    http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/mac911/2006/10/airportswitch/index.php
I am still wondering if this can apply to my situation. I have an Airport Exteme BS distributing the wireless signal on it's own node. Nothing is physically connected to the BS except an ethernet cable running to a hub which is connected to the cable modem. While my ISP service isn't supplying service faster than Airport will manage, no problem...but, I would like to have the advantage ethernet networking between my machines for all the advantages that ethernet speed can bring to that situation.
My connection to the internet is from WAN from the cable modem. I have an ethernet connection from the BS that I can run a cable back to say, an iBook. Will this work? I want wireless internet, but ethernet for machine to machine networking.

    iBook G3/500 G4/Dual 450 Mac OS X (10.4)

Helpful response, but I am uncertain this is what I am after. First, the hub is at the other end of the house, inconvenient to run a cable to it in this way. Presently, "Distribute IP Addresses" is turned off. This is way it had to be set since the AEBS is on a separate node. I just wonder why I can't run a cable from the AEBS LAN port back to the iBook. Looking for best possible speed when networking from my studio G4 while keeping the wireless internet setting.
Any reason making the config the way I am imagining will not work?

  • Can you use Airport for internet and Gigabit Ethernet for file sharing?

i would like to complicate my network setup by using my Airport connection to the internet for internet access and then use the Gigabit Ethernet connection between my G5 tower and the MacBook Pro for file sharing, Compressor's distributed rendering, and possibly iTunes music/video sharing for Front Row.
is this possible? could i just run a cat 6 cable between the two and network them together? or do i need to get a Gigabit Switch?
i suppose i could just try running the cable between them and see what happens. i don't think these new machines require cross-over cables since the ethernet ports auto-detect that now, but is a cat 5e or cat 6 cable required for Gigabit speed?
    thanks,
    scott

Yes it would work. The Ethernet network would be used for local file transfers and the Airport for internet. However you will need to make sure Ethernet is at the top of the list of network ports in the Network Preferences.

  • Can't use airport or ethernet

I recently bought a new mac pro. I was using airport flawlessly but now I cannot get online at all, either through airport express or through ethernet. However, my other mac can access the network without a problem, so I know that the network is not the problem.
When I try to use airport utility to check on one of my network devices (it shows both my airport express and time capsule), I receive an error while reading the configuration (-6753). Strangely, I can see my network in network preferences and it says I am connected. However, when I try to use my browser I can't connect to anything. The same is true of ethernet.
I deleted my preferences/ system configuration folder, hoping that would fix the problem... but to no avail.
One probable (?) cause... When I loaded my new mac pro, I transferred my old user from my other macbook. But because I haven't been using that user, I decided to delete it. Since deleting it today I can no longer access the network. Any ideas?

Thanks for the help and sorry for the delay, been too busy and WIFI still worked, but now I really want to use airdisk and my printer. I resetted multiple times. When I reset, airport utility app detects the airport extreme, but hangs on reading the configuration.
So I switched to a windows laptop and Windows had no trouble finding the airport extreme, nor configuring the airport. I set the channel to 9, but no use. Pretty desperate right now, maybe I should switch to Windows to use apple hardware? Another strange thing is that I have the same problem from Windows on my macbook (running VMWare Fusion). Maybe this is an hardware issue, but I have no problems with WIFI, just with the configuration of my airport extreme.
    kind regards,
    Pieter

  • Possible to use Airport and Ethernet at same time?

Short question: I want to use my wired Ethernet connection for my local area network to access my file servers and other computers on my network, and a wireless Airport connection for Internet usage.
    Is this possible? How?
It seems that with both "on", I am connecting to both via Ethernet and it is forgoing the wireless network entirely even though it shows as connected to my wireless network.
    PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

This is normally done like this.
Your Internet Service Provider furnishes you a Modem.
You run an Ethernet cabale from your ISP's Modem to the Wan Port, or uplink port on your wireless Router, ( You will have to purchase the Wireless Router.
Wireless Routers are available in 2 4 and 6 port varietys.
Anything you plug into the ports as many computers as you have ports for hard wired connections. This will allow for wired and wireless connections to the Internet and all can be used simultaniouslly.
Remember each machine you have connected will have to have the correct setting in the Network Preferences.
This can also be done with a Switch or a Hub each varys a little bit on the confiquration.. If you need more information be specific on exactly what all you are trying to hook up and what ISP you have the Modem they furnish, the exact router you are using and the number of machines and how they are set in the Network setting on each,
Normally any wireless router you purchase will give you a step by step on hoe to set it up, in the paper work that comes with them. Good Luck Don

  • Using Airport via Ethernet then dial-up airport...?

Okay, so I know I'm not crazy. Ages ago I helped my father set up his Airport (Snow) to his DSL. During that setup process I remember having the option, in the airport admin utility, to use that airport for dialing up abroad...
In other words (I dont know how best to articulate this).... I could plug a phone line into the airport (which was already connected to broadband) and go anywhere else in the world with my lap top and dial up to the phone number which was plugged into the modem port of the airport. The airport would take its connection via ethernet and broadcast it via dial-up to me anywhere in the world. Therefore it was kind of like using my airport as a mini dial-up ISP.
Am I crazy for remembering this...? It was a while ago, but I have recently seen this as being a handy tool for me. My cell phone has bluetooth and so does my macbook pro. It would be really cool to be able to dial up to the old graphite airport im using to do the same thing anywhere i go... Are there only certain airports that can do this?
If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated...
    Thanks a bunch,
    Joe Montana

You memory is correct - this was a feature available on older model Airport Base Stations that had a built in dialup modem. However, none of the "Airport Extreme Base Station 802.11n" models now being sold have a built in dialup modem. The last Airport Extreme Base Station model to have a built in dialup modem was part number M8799LL/A - you can still find new but old stock of this model from retailers other than Apple.

  • Can't use airport for iphone if macbook is using ethernet cable

I recently switched to a new internet provider and noticed that downloads are faster for my macbook if it is connected by ethernet to my router. However in order to use the ethernet connection, I have to turn off airport in system preferences. When I do that I can't connect to the internet with my iphone. Is there a way to keep my computer connected by cable and still have airport working? I'm using a Comcast box to D link router to Original Airport wireless set up.

That shouldn't be. You must have some sort of configuration problem. You don't really need to turn off AirPort in System Preferences. All you need to do is to reorder the connection items to put the Ethernet item first.
However, it doesn't make sense that turning off the AirPort circuitry of your MacBook would prevent your iPhone from connecting. I"ll presume that it's the router that's creating the wireless network and that you're not doing anything odd like sharing an Internet connection from the MacBook's AirPort function. Is everything configured to use DHCP?

    There should be.

Please explain what you mean by "Original Airport wireless set up".

  • How can I create my own network in my dorm? (Using Airport Extreme + ethernet cable) (To connect AppleTV and Sonos successfully with no restrictions)

So I recently set up my Apple Airport Extreme Router in my dorm and have a BIG problem. It works and lets me do most things on my own network, but when I try doing things on my external devices connected to the network (Apple TV and Sonos Hi-Fi Sound system) the connection just doesn't go through. I'll give two examples.
After setting up my Sonos system successfully, I was prompted to update the software so I can use options that need internet access such as pandora and soundcloud. It just didn't work at all. It gave me an error that had to do with internet connection. I tried numerous times.
On Apple TV, I used AirPlay on my phone to mirror what I was seeing on my phone and then tried to play youtube, soundcloud, and other music apps and none of them worked.
My guess is that it has something to do with my school's restrictions on streaming or downloading. But none of this stuff is actually restricted so I know it must be due to the transfer of information between my network (which is connected to the school's network I am assuming, since my ethernet port is in my dorm wall)  and my external devices.
Honestly I'll probably get the "Your school has these restrictions answer", but I know there is a way to fix this and I really want the answer!!
    Thanks,
    Andres

You don't need the AirPort Express to do this.
You can set your Mac to share it's wired connection over the wireless port and the iTouch can connect directly to the Mac.
You could also do it with the AirPort Express, but you don't need to - it's overkill for what you've described.

  • Network question. Use coax for ethernet?

I heard there's a way to use an existing coaxial cable for an ethernet connection? I have my iMac in our converted garage out back of the main house, and the airport/. internet connection inside the main house. I have them communicate wirelessly now and it's fine, but drops out now and then and I wanted to hook it up by wire.
There's a coax cable laid between the two houses, but no room/facility for adding an ethernet cable, easily anyway. I was told you can get adapaters to use the coax for this purpose. I looked around online and there's a variety of things available, from simple adapaters for $10 or $20, to complex boxes that cost a hundred to several hundred. Anybody know if this is possible, and if it is, what kind of adapter I need?

Coax ("10base2') was the second-generation Ethernet connection technique. (The first was "thicknet"; the third "twisted pair" - "10baseT"). Do a Google search for "10base2".

  • Internet slow with G5 using Airport Extreme ethernet

I have the reverse of everyone else's Airport issues-I run SLOWER on ethernet! I bought & installed Airport Extreme two days ago. It's running into a DSL modem which is set up as a bridge. Our wireless computers (iMac/Intel and Dell netbook) have no problems. My newest Mac (2.26 GHz Quad Core, OS 10.6, ethernet connected), is fine, but my G5 (pre-Intel Dual 2GHz PowerPC, OS 10.4.11), also connected via ethernet, is taking 40-50 seconds to load a page. The G5 doesn't even have wireless capability, so I never loaded those software updates. Because of this I thought the G5 might be having a problem communicating with Airport, even through ethernet, so last night I updated to the latest Airport Utility package for 10.4.11 (21-20-49.pkg) This didn't seem to help.
I usually use Firefox, but tried Safari and Explorer-same problem. If I reset the DSL modem to standalone mode and connect the computer directly, the G5 downloads at its normal fast speed.
One last thing, and it's really kind of weird. I went to Network Utility and 10-pinged a couple of sites (google & bbc.uk). The average speed on the G5 for google was 23.945. The average speed on the QuadCore was 24.479! Slower!! I may be misunderstanding what this means. A page that takes 60 seconds to load on the G5 will load in 4 seconds on the Quad.
Is it Tiger? Is it because my G5 is pre-Intel? Is it because Airport doesn't like me? Please help!

Changing ports didn't work. But then I thought of running from the G5 to a different ethernet line altogether (got one for clients on the other side of the room) and the downloads were spot on. I went back to the original config-wall jack to a Belkin UPS for isolation, out of the Belkin to the computer. Swapped all the ethernet patch cords with no difference, but taking the Belkin out of the equation solved the problem. Got to find another way to isolate though.
Last thought: I don't know why the Airport and Belkin have this issue.

  • Ability to use airport and ethernet simultaneously

On my old MBP I was able to bring up both the ethernet and the airport at the same time (on different networks). I migrated everything over to my new MBP and now I can only have one or the other connect. The second connects, but never gets an IP address (both use DHCP). By turning off one or the other I can switch between interfaces, but never have them both alive at the same time. One is connected to a 10. network, one connected to a 192.168 net. I have tried creating a new location with just the two interfaces in there but the outcome is exactly the same.
Is there a limitation on the new MBP that does not allow both interfaces to be alive at the same time? I use this to connect to my work network on the physical interface and connect to my home wireless for local printing and NAS support.
    Thanks

There should not be anything inherent to the new computer or OS that will disallow this. What happens if you assign manual IP address for the Ethernet interface?
If you used migration assistant to transfer over your data and settings - that may have messed up some things. Is it possible to verify if it works like before on a clean OSX install?

  • How do you set up streaming music using airport express ethernet cable vice wireless function

I have successfully connected my home stereo system to both my music library and my wife's library and I am using the remote app on an ipad.  It works great.  However, I would like to disable the wireless function of the airport express and use ethernet cable to stream the music.  Can this be done, and if so, how.  I have found the instructions for the old airport admin untility, but the options are not the same using the newer airport utility.

I have the "n" type.  The AX is hard wired to a router that comes off the cable modem.  The iMac is also wired to the router so I believe I have solid ethernet continuity between the iMac and the AS.  I have the AX connected to the stereo now.  The wireless works great, just wanted to see if there was a noticeable difference in sound quality if I run the sound wired vice wirelessly.

  • How can I get my Canon MF8350CDN to print using Airport Express USB on Lion?

I just installed a new airport express with USB to my MF8350CDN.  When I add the printer, it sees the printer, loads the UFRII driver (from my download from canon) and opens a print que.  However I try to print a test page it gives me "cmjcInitialize Error" , printer is offline, canon CMFP printer driver, check power and connection.  I print from the PC without a problem but I had to connect using IP printing to the airport's IP address.  Is there something that I am missing during the installation?

This is an older post.  Hopefully you have resolved your issue, but just in case you have not.
