Simple question!
I have just bought a desk top hard drive to back up and store to (Iomega Hi-speed USB 2.0)
Is is at all possible to connect this to my mac via the USB connection on my airport? It would be really cool if I could...

No, the USB of the Airport is ONLY for printer. However, your harddrive could simply be share on your network when it is plug on your computer...

Recovering photo's from crashed HP desk top hard drive on to my Toshiba Satellite A505-S6980?
I recently had my HP desk top crash.The HP says it cannot find any operating system but powers up and I do not have any kind of recovery disc for it. Is there any way to connect the hard drive to my Toshiba to recover the documents and photos? I'm not to computer savy but, with guidance I can probably figure it out. Any help would be appreciated. Go to Solution.In that case you'll need to see if one of these recovery tools provides a self booting disk option to recover the data or take the hard drive out of the HP, put it in a usb external enclosure for that type of drive (not sure if it is SATA or EIDE), connect it to your Toshiba, and run the recovery software from the Toshiba.

You need to install the HP printer software. The installation process will place a printer icon under the Windows 8.1 Apps menu. Click on the icon and you should be able to see the Advanced setting link.

I have already seen the Goflex Stellite, which works this way.
Is there any other device that could do this?I did a typo. My current computer is a 2010 1/2 iMac. The stand alone monitors are still out of my price range so I'm looking for other options. By buying an external hard drive and a broken iMac, I'm still ahead. Still, if I understand you right, the 27" 2010 and earlier iMacs would be possiblities.

I have a 500 gig time capsule. I have used with a Macbook. The Macbook has a 500 gig hard drive which is about 3/4 full. Now we just purchased a new MacBook pro with a 1 TB hard drive. Do I need to buy a larger Time Capsule?

Probably yes. You might be able to get the full backup of the new MacBook Pro on the Time Capsule, but it will not be long before the Time Capsule is out of space.
Better to add a new Time Capsule and backup the new MacBook Pro to the new Time Capsule, and keep the old MacBook backing up to the old Time Capsule.
If you do not want to add a new Time Capsule, another option would be to erase the Time Capsule disk and start over again with new backups of both Macs and move forward. -
AirPort Extreme and shared USB Hard Drive
I received an AirPort Extreme for Christmas with the intent of using it to share a network Hard Drive and Printer between the multiple machines on our home network. I've finally gotten it set up with Bonjour on the PC's, and the AirPort Utility on all machines. It's connected via ethernet cable to a Dell PC, and wirelessly to an iMac, a Dell Laptop, my iPhone and a PS3. Internet functionality is great for all devices.
My next step was to connect a Seagate 750GB External USB Hard Drive to the APE. This drive was previously connected to the Dell PC, and was formatted as NTFS. I went through the hassle of converting it to FAT32, I connected it to the router, and both Dell's and the iMac can see the drive. I haven't checked if the PS3 can see it yet, but since I haven't found Bonjour for the PS3, I'm not holding my breath. The iPhone - well, mine isn't jailbroken at the moment.
A few quick hints I learned from doing a lot of web surfing and trial-and-error. These could save people a LOT of time...
+ Don't format a external drive as either an Apple Drive (HFS+) or as a Windows Drive (NTFS) if you plan on using data off it on both a Mac and a PC. Windows won't read HFS+ without a converter, APE won't accept NTFS. It needs to be FAT32 as this is nearly universal.
+ Windows will only format a maximum of 32GB as FAT32. It's a stupid limit, and you have to jump hoops to get it to do a larger drive size.
+ Use the Disk Utility on the Mac to erase the drive and reformat it as an MS-DOS partition. It will work up to a drive of about 2TB according to what I've read. On the Mac, MS-DOS partition = FAT32, and it formatted my 750GB drive as a single 750GB partition.
Now, I've begun the task of copying all our media to the drive. Copied a few pictures, no problem. Copied a few MP3's, no problem. Where the problems start is in trying to copy movies to the drive. We have ripped most of our DVD's to DivX / H.264, to keep the kids from destroying the DVD's (trust me, DVD's scratch EASY in the hands of a 5-year old). So I have about 50 movies to transfer, each around 1GB in size.
Each time I try to transfer a movie to the drive, I get an error "*Error Copying File or Folder*" which displays the message "*Cannot copy BlahBlahBlah: The specified network name is no longer available.*" This also results in the HDD becoming unavailable to the other machines on the network. I've had to un-plug and then re-plug the APE a few times to get the HDD to work again. Sometimes, the copy actually does work, even though I get this message. I know the easy work-around is to connect the HDD directly to the PC with the files on it and transfer them that way, but I shouldn't have to do that - it should just work.
I'm wondering if anyone else has any kind of a similar experience? It appears that I can stream music and video from the drive easily enough, it's the writing to the drive that seems to be the issue. Thanks in advance...

JeffI would think you would have better luck formatting it as HFS+ (Macintosh Extended File System). You'll still be able to see it from your non-Mac PCs.

I just want to use Time Capsule as a wireless hard drive. I do not want to connect my Internet to it whatsoever. I realize this would involve disconnecting from Time Capsule and reconnecting to my Internet every time.
The settings for Time Capsule are just mind-boggling.
Is there any easy way to set it up as a password-protected wireless hard drive?

Please help! I will provide points!First, you don't need to use Time Capsule with Time Machine. It can be used as a manual file storage or file exchange drive.
Where do you have the Ethernet cable placed on the Time Capsule. Is it the WAN port or one of the network ports?
If you are attempting to set-up the Time Capsule as your wireless router, it will need to be connected to the wired modem from your service provider through the WAN port for configuration. The Time capsule should then appear as a configurable Airport device.
To start, turn off your cable or DSL modem and the Time Capsule. Turn them both back on with the Time capsule connected to the wired modem via of the WAN port so the modem can grab the TC's MAC address. -
I'm not very tech savvy but am trying my best to use Disc Utility to copy my hard drive to a brand new external drive and am having the error "Unable to create...(Cannot allocate memory)".
Last night no problems, woke this morning and it was freezing so I forced a restart and got the grey screen with the folder and question mark. Ran off to best buy to get an external drive... Could be you have the wrong cd/dvd. The mac will only boot a supported cd/dvd for your machine. The flashing question mark indicdates your machine could not find a valid os.
When I hold down the "option" key for the startup manager the cursor comes up and moves but the actually manager doesn't come up no matter how long I leave the laptop on.
Not sure. Could be your machine does not support the startup manager. You would think the machine would ignore the key.
Where did you get the dvd? What is the number on the DVD?

Yes. Find the LR catalog file by looking in Edit/Catalog Settings/General. Close LR and navigate to that spot. The catalog file is the one that ends in .lrcat - move it to wherever you want. Next to the .lrcat file is a subfolder called Previews.lrdata. You can move that over as well, but if you don't LR will generate new previews. Double-click on the .lrcat file in its new home and LR will open with that catalog. Set Preferences to When Starting Up Use Most Recent Catalog.

With TimeMachine, yes.
With a bootable clone, no. Provided you don't save the backup states changes which CCC is doing now.
I prefer a straight clone backup, I keep many copies of clones on seperate hardware to "go back in time" with and thus avoid saving the changes with my clones.
I swear I tried to back up my computer on a 250g G-Drive and it told me there was not enough room. But I am not positive if the entire drive was available or not. I may have had it sectioned into 150 & 100 sections and I might have tried to back it up on the 150 section. or I might be imagining that.... either way, it didn't work.
Your data is going to grow, 232GB is rather small for a boot drive.
So your going to be needing storage drives eventually, just plan ahead and remmeber hardware redundancy is key. -
hey, can i clone my Macbook Pro internal hard drive and then paste it all onto a formated external hard drive, then make the Mac use the external as the primary hard drive? please help for i only have around 618mb left out of 189GB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If what doesn't work?
If cloning your internal drive to the external drive is not successful, I expect CCC will tell you so. Assuming that doesn't happen, you will have a bootable replica of the internal drive on the external drive once CCC has finished.
You can then do any of several things:
1. Replace your internal drive with a much larger one (320GB or 500GB, or even larger), and clone the external drive's contents onto the new drive so you'll have all your data in one place. Note that if you do this, you'll also need to buy an external drive that's large enough to back the new internal drive up on.
2. Boot from the external drive as a temporary measure while you clear at least 30-40GB of data off the internal drive, allowing you to keep using it and saving small amounts of data to it. The external drive will then contain the only copies of the files you've deleted from the internal drive, so you'll need a seond external drive large enough to back both the other drives up on.
If you can't comfortably clear a minimum of 30GB off the internal drive, you really need a larger internal drive right now, and you shouldn't bother fooling around with the inadequate one you have — you'll just quickly overfill it again.
3. Replace the optical drive in your MBP with a large conventional hard drive, giving you two hard drives inside the machine. You will then need one or more external drives large enough to back up both of the internal drives.
If you sense a theme here — back up, back up, back up — you are correct. It's flat-out foolhardy to own or use a computer without maintaining complete, up-to-date backups of everything at all times. -
How do I overcome error 150:30 with a replacement system hard drive on a Mac Pro?
I have replaced my system hard disk drive on a Mac Pro and used Mac 'Restore' to restore the complete system from a Time Machine backup. Everything else works correctly, except my current Adobe products (InDesign CS4 and Photoshop CS4) both give a licensing error code 150:30 and each suggest contacting Adobe technical support.
Can you help?

Airport Extreme and connecting a hard drive
Hello All,
Thank you ahead of time for your help! I have a couple of questions regarding the set up of my airport extreme and an external hard drive.
What I want to accomplish is using the airport extreme to ONLY share a hard drive for backup and sharing other files through out the house. My housemates already have the internet going through their router, so there is for the airport extreme. Can a macbook pro (13in intel) receive two wireless signals, one that is the internet and the other from my airport extreme (that shares my hard drive)? If so, how is this done?
Any assistance would be more that appreciated!!

The simplest way to accomplish this would be to connect the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) to the Internet router by Ethernet; reconfigure the AEBSn as a bridge, and disable its wireless radios.
In this configuration, you can still share out the hard drive and only need to connect to the Internet router's wireless network for both drive & Internet access. -
If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.
You have to duplicate the photos unless you want to use PSE as the external editor for iphoto. In iphoto, your photos are stored in a proprietary library, which should never be messed with by programs other than iphoto. Writing to the iphoto library from outside iphoto is the fastest way to corrupt it and lose all the pics it contains.
So you can either set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from within iphoto, or you must export the photos from iphoto to be able to use them outside that program. -

Your iMac has four USB ports. If the new drive is also USB, just plug it into one of the unused ports.
Your machine also has a Firewire 800 port. If it is unused, you can connect a new external firewire drive to it.
Note - if you plan on using the new drive for booting (backup or emergency), such as by partitioning it and cloning your internal drive to one of the partitions on it, strongly suggest you go with a firewire drive.
In either case, firewire or USB, it's best to get a drive which has its own power supply.
