Using already existing directory structure to create rolls

I'm converting from iView into iPhoto. I have hundreds of directories titled things like 011606.SamuelWasBorn/ with subdirectories in there called /Images /FinishedImages /WebMedium /EmailSmall etc... and then plenty of .tif and .jpegs inside of those.
I've been doing this one Cmd-Shift-I at a time, followed by a Cmd-A t select all, then a Cmd-Shift-N for a new album, followed by retyping in the name and dropping the date.
Sigh. I'm 6 weeks into this now and still only 1/4 of the way through.
Has anyone tried to drag and drop an entire directory structure into iPhoto's directory structure, fire up iPhoto, and have it recognize all that stuff as a whole bunch of new rolls that lack thumbnails? Would that work? Would iPhot then offer to update its thumbnails? And then would I be happy and fully integrated into my new iPhoto life?
I'm just a bit too chicken to give it a try. If nobody's tried this before, I'll create a test library and give it a go, but if someone has experience with doing this, I'd appreciate any pointers.
Thanks.
Oren

Oren:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. iPhoto creates a roll with the same name for any folder of image files that are imported into it. All you have to do is select your folders of source files and drag them into iPhoto's open window.
If you want to use iPhoto's alias feature you can keep your current source folders and drag them into a library that's setup to not copy the files into it but use alias files. The library works as a conventional library with the exception that if you delete a photo from the library it does not delete the source file. That must be done manually via the Finder. I've created some Tutorials to assist users to convert over to an alias based system or go to an iView based one.
I use iView as my primary image management and iPhoto's alias feature to create a library of the same source files. That way I have the best of both applications. Also, when using the alias method, the importing process is much faster. Good luck.

  • Import already existing directory structure into DFS namespace?

    Hi all,
    I'm planning to migrate three file servers to a single DFS namespace and after reading the official docs and numerous blog posts I'm still unsure about the right way to do it.
    The "main" server already has a share with a complex directory structure, called \\server1\team, and that share shall become the root of the new DFS namespace, lets call it  \\domain.local\team.
    Part of that already existing directory structure is this folder: \\server1\team\admin\communication\archive. The folder "archive" contains thousands of files in numerous folders and shall become a dfs link to another share \\server2\archive. But
    before I can create the folder "archive" as a dfs link I have to create the folder "admin" in the dfs hierarchy of course, then below that the folder "communication"
    Question: When I try to create a folder "admin" in the dfs namespace, I get the error message "the folder cannot be created in the namespace. The file exists."
    Ok, the folder "admin" indeed exists, but how can I "import" this branch of the existing directory hierarchy into the dfs namespace?
    Do I have to rename the existing folder "admin" to e.g. "admin2", then create the dfs folder "admin" and move the complete directory structure below "admin2" to "admin"? Or can I simply make the existing folder
    "admin" a dfs folder?
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards
    Christoph

    Mandy, thanks for your feedback!
    I have to describe my problem more precisely: creating the root of the new DFS namespace is *not* the problem. This worked for me exactly as you expained it. The problem appears when I try to create a folder below that root in the DFS namespace. If that
    folder already exists in the share you cannot choose how to handle security settings but you get an error message, and that's it.
    This may be helpfull to explain what I want to achieve:
    Old structure:
    \\server1\team - folder admin - subfolder "archive" - lots of subfolders and files
    Now I want to move all files and folders from "archive" to \\server2\archive and link this share into the new DFS namespace, so that our users don't notice any change when they access that archive folder.
    new structure:
    1. Create DFS namespace root: \\domain.local\team  -> \\server1\team   (works!)
                |
    2. Create folder admin  (problem!)
                |
    3. Create subfolder "archive" -> \\server2\archive (not possible becaues "admin" couldn't be created)
    I could perhaps create a DFS namespace with the root \\server1\team\admin\archive and link that to \\server2\archive, but I would like to avoid creating a new namespace for each share which from \\server2 which I mount into some subfolder of \\server1\team...
    Thanks for reading.

  • An intelligent way to import already existing directory structure to Aperture

    Hello,
    is there an intelligent way to import already existing big directory structure of photographs (over 2TB) archive into Aperture?
    I have my catalogue on a disk created in a way:
    date - short shot description (i.e. “2011-02-14 Name Surname (portrait)”)
              Originals
              Converted
              PSD
              Final
    I would like, when importing “date - short description”, it to become an Aperture Project with the same name and subfolders Originals, Converted, PSD and Final to become Aperture Albums or Folders in that Project.
    The only way I found is to create a Project and Albums in that project manually and then import all the pictures from the corresponding folders, one-by-one,  to Aperture’s Albums. I use references only to preserve the current archive structure on a disk as well.
    thank you for your time.

    You can try and experiment with the various options in File->Import Folders as Projects, specifically the option Import Folders as  to see if you get what you are looking for but I doubt  you will get exactly what you are looking for.
    One way to achieve your goal would be to import the projects and then once that is done create the other entities (either folders or Albums) once and then paste them into each project.
    The only way to truly automate this would be to write an Applescript and unless this is an ongoing requirement by the time you developed the script you could have just created the structure and pasted into the projects.

  • Using iPhoto with an existing directory structure on HD full of jpgs

    I'm using iPhoto 6. I recently moved 7,000+ photos (jpgs) off my PC onto my new Mac harddrive. They are organized into dozens of folders and subfolders. How can I use iPhoto to work with the pics within this directory structure? I tried dragging and importing several different ways, but it never preserves my extensive directory structure (just puts them all together into one big pile). I set it not to make a copy when importing. I just want iPhoto to "point" to my existing directory structure, so I can see my folders and subfolders on the left side (and from there I'll create albums and pages stuff). Thanks, Robin

    Hello, Robin,
    Welcome to the discussions.
    First, you have to consider that iPhoto organizes differently from what you are used to doing. It is designed to allow you to do your organizing from within iPhoto, using film rolls and albums. That way, you do not have to be concerned with how and where iPhoto stores the actual photos.
    If you want to keep the same type of organization that you have now, you can import the photos one folder at a time, so that iPhoto puts each folder into a separate film roll. You can change the date on import, since iPhoto will give the roll the date of import, not the date of the photo.
    To get the subfolders into folders, use the album creation feature in the Source pane and create the albums and folders to suit your organizational needs and drag the photos into the appropriate locations. One of the great features of iPhoto's album function is that you can have a photo in more than one album.
    Please take a look at iPhoto's tutorial here:

  • Cannot Use Already Versioned Directory

    I've moved from the EA version to the release version of Data Modeler. Consequently, I get a "your design is in the old format" message when I save, then further instructs me to "save as.." instead. When I do so, trying to overwrite the existing dmd file, I get "Cannot Use Already Version Directory. Please select a new directory." This is counter intuitive to me - I use source control so that I can track and compare changes to the project, including updates like this. What procedure should I use to update the file if I can't overwrite? Write it to a temp directory and then copy in the contents? For the record, I don't use the built in source integration and instead use the standard subversion client outside of DM. Can I somehow disable DM's awareness of the source control?

    Can I somehow disable DM's awareness of the source control?That's in "Preferences>Extensions" - disable versioning support there. Still I won't recommend to save it over existing design - existing directories will be deleted including svn directories. It's safer to save the content in another directory and copy it back to versioned directory; also files that have older date should be removed from versioned folders.

  • How do I Uninstall Adobe PSE9?  All I get is an error message, "Error 1316.  The specified account already exists".  Then the Unistaller rolls back and the program just sits there, partially uninstalled and unusable.

    I have upgraded to PSE13 and want to unistall PSE9.  When I try to do this all I get is an error message, "Error 1316.  The specified account already exists".  Then the uninstaller rolls back and I am left with a partially uninstalled version that is unusable.  I tried to reinstall the software from the original PSE9 disk but all it tries to do is uninstall the version already on my computer, and this then does the same thing as noted above. How do I completely uninstall PSE9?

  • Subvi containing controls should use already existing window

    Hello,
    I am building a User Interface that has several levels (main vi, several
    second and third level subvis. The second level subvi contains
    controls, so it opens a new window when called,
    but it should clear the already existing window of the main vi, use this
    window and restore the main vi after completion.
    The third level subvis add some more controls to the second level subvis',
    so they should use their window, but without clearing the second level subvis.
    How can this be done?
    Thanks
    Thomas

    I change my main screen controls and indicators all the time using references. I had to, since my one project had almost 100 controls and indicators (on tab controls) for the user to input data. With that many controls and indicators, direct wiring to subVIs would have been such a mess.
    But... back to what you want. Basically, you open a reference to the VI that you want to access controls/indicators on and use Invoke nodes to Set Control Value or Get Control Value. Don't forget to close your reference when you're done with it.
    I have included my library that I use for these functions so you can see how I do it. Have fun.

    Hi Sundhar,
    According to your description, you might want to check the existence of sub folder in a folder of a library using Client Object Model.
    Please take the code demo below for a try, it will check whether there is sub folder in a given folder:
    public static void createSubFolder(string siteUrl, string libName, string folderServerRelativeUrl)
    ClientContext clientContext = new ClientContext(siteUrl);
    List list = clientContext.Web.Lists.GetByTitle(libName);
    CamlQuery camlQuery = new CamlQuery();
    camlQuery.ViewXml =
    @"<View Scope='RecursiveAll'>
    <Query>
    <Where>
    <Eq>
    <FieldRef Name='FSObjType' />
    <Value Type='Integer'>1</Value>
    </Eq>
    </Where>
    </Query>
    </View>";
    //camlQuery.FolderServerRelativeUrl = "/Lib1/folder1";
    camlQuery.FolderServerRelativeUrl = folderServerRelativeUrl;
    ListItemCollection items = list.GetItems(camlQuery);
    clientContext.Load(items);
    clientContext.ExecuteQuery();
    Console.WriteLine(items.Count);
    if (0 == items.Count)
    //create sub folder here

  • How to force Jdeveloper to preserve existing sources directory structure?

    Hi all,
    I have JDeveloper 9.0.3.4 which I have to use.
    I tried to import to project from existing sources and I tried to keep existing sources
    directory structure by selection option "Scan source paths to determine project contents" which should (according to documentation) preserve existing directory structure and show it in the Navigator.
    But instead I get always (Jdev default?) directory structure:
    Sources
    HTML Sources
    Miscelaneous Files
    I changed default settings for Input path in project settings and for default project settings but still I get this Jdev structure.
    Is there a way to force JDeveloper to preserve the directory structure of sources it imports from?
    Many thanks,
    Mile

    I'd like to be able to specify the default project directory structure in 10g as well. For example I would like to have under the project root:
    build.xml
    src\
    generatedsrc\
    config\
    resources\
    build\
    deploy\
    Generating an ant build.xml using the wizard should also take into account the directory structure being used by the JDeveloper project build. I don't see why I should have to modify the build.xml file at all.

  • Using wlappc with split directory structure

    I am trying to generate an EAR file of my application using wlappc in WLS8.1sp3.
    I am using the split directory structure, I have a src directory containing my
    source and xml descriptors, and a output directory containing the compiled classes.
    I am using the split structure to deploy to the app server in development, that
    is working fine. I use wlcompile to compile the code, that works ok too.
    I assume that the purpose of wlappc would be to take a split directory structure
    and create an EAR file from it, but there is only one source directory that you
    can pass to the ant task. If I pass the src directory, it complains that it cannot
    find the classes. If I use the output directory, it complains that it cannot
    find the META-INF directory.
    Am I missing a step? Do I have to use wlpackage to put everything in one directory,
    then wlappc? Do I have to copy the class files or xml files manually first?

    will do hundreds of checks against your EJBs to make sure they comply
    with the spec. It will compile your JSP files into servlets etc. You
    just need to pass wlappc the output directory. It will automatically
    find the src directory.
    When you're ready to deploy to a production or staging server, you can
    use wlpackage to put everything into one directory or an archived EAR file.

  • PC - Moving catalog and directory structure to a new HD

    Having filled my internal HD with images, I went out and purchased a new and bigger external hard drive. I want to move my images to the new drive while preserving both my directory structure and catalog information. From what I can see of the "move" command in PS Elements, it moves selected images to a new directory, but that's not what I want to do. I probably have a hundred named folders and I would like to keep the images in folders of the same name on the new drive. I don't want to have to move one directory at a time. Copying through the file manager can obviously do this, but I don't know if it will preserve my tags, etc.
    Is there a straightforward way to move files from one drive to another that preserves both directory structure and catalog information?
    Thanks in advance.
    Artie

    Humm, this is strange-Version 4 is supposed to move entire folders; Version 3 did not do this.
    Okay, Plan B.
    Open Elements and do a Full Backup and point to your external hard drive.
    When this has finished running, do a Restore. You should get a pop up asking if you want to use the existing folder structure. Answer Yes and point to your External HardDrive (EHD). This should copy your photos and the Organizer file over to your (EHD).
    Now look in Preferences under Files (I think, don't have program open) and you will see one value for where to store photos and one for Organizer location. Change these to your EHD so future photos and tags/collections are written to the EHD.
    Verify all your tags and collections came over correctly.
    If you are satisfied the transfer went correctly, you can erase your photos from your hard drive to free up space. You can also delete the Organizer file if you want.
    Option 2-Use Windows Explorer and move all the files from your hard drive to your EHD. This will keep your folder structure, but will cause havoc with Organizer.
    Open Organizer and do File>Reconnect All Missing. It will be all of them. You should have an option to change the drive to your EHD. It may take quite a while to reconnect all of them, but since all the folders/files are the same name it should find them all.
    If you wish, you can change the drive location manually. However, I've found many users 1) do not have MS Access on their machine and 2) are not experienced in using the program. If you are comfortable with the program, let me know and we'll get some directions.
    Finally, I see a copy of the post in the Technical side. Since most forum users read both sides of this forum, I'm going to reference this thread in that post so anyone can see what we have tried so far.

  • Can't I change the directory structure?

              Hello Everybody,
              So far everything is working when use the default directory structure,i.e. mydomain/applications/myWebApp/WEB-INF/classes/some package structure.
              But we have application with lot of html files which call servlets like this..myWebApp/WebApp/myServlet.
              In order not to change my html files, I've created this WebApp directory under weblogic directory structure shown above.
              I've done some trial and error in web.xml file to make servlets execute. But 404 error is showing up.
              I tried putting in web.xml like this...
              <servlet>
              <servlet-name>/WebApp/HelloWorldServlet</servlet-name>
              <servlet-class>com.reliable.servlets.HelloWorldServlet</servlet-class>
              </servlet>
              <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>HelloWorldServlet</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>/WebApp/HelloWorldServlet/*</url-pattern>
              </servlet-mapping>
              I also tried taking out slash(/) before WebApp but no luck.
              Can any one guide how to make this work.
              Thanks so much,
              Sri

    What he needs is something like:
              <servlet>
              <servlet-name>HHH</servlet-name>
              <servlet-class>com.reliable.servlets.HelloWorldServlet</servlet-class>
              </servlet>
              <servlet-mapping>
              <servlet-name>HHH</servlet-name>
              <url-pattern>HelloWorldServlet/*</url-pattern>
              </servlet-mapping>
              HHH is simply to link the mapping declaration to the servlet declaration.
              Then the URL would be something like:
              http://myserver:8801/appname/HelloWorldServlet/abc
              If this is the default app, then appname/ drops out.
              There is a good discussion of this in our docs and
              the servlet spec discusses this as well.
