Using an Aiport Express to create a WDS

Hi,
Apologies if this is already on here, but I can't see the answer anywhere. Have looked through the manuals, support etc on the Apple website but am still stuck.
I have a Mac with OS X 10.5.8, a time capsule and an airport express. My time capsule is creating a local network that my laptop can access.
I now have an airport express and would like to use it to strengthen the signal (create a WDS). But all the support info I find says I can only do this through "Airport Setup Assistant". I don't have Airport Setup Assistant on my mac, and I can't download it off the apple website because it says I already have a later version.
I do have airport utility, but it doesn't recognise the airport express when I plug it in. I also have Airport Setup Assistant for Graphite or Snow, but it says I can't use that program because I don't have an airport card installed on my mac (which is true).
Can anyone:
1. Point me in the right direction for info on how I can get Airport Utility to work;
2. Tell me how I can get Airport Setup Assistant on my Mac; or
3. Tell me that the whole exercise is pointless because I don't have an airport extreme card in my mac.
Thanks,
iiago

I suggest you simply connect one of Airport Extreme (Time Capsule)’s LAN Ports with AirPort Express’s only LAN port using a cable. For me It worked miraculously. On my PC, I simply configured the AirPort Express to extend the range of my primary base station (AirPort Extreme) and typed password, instead of making the WDS option. In this way, my iPhone could no longer recognize AirPort Express, which has been seamlessly integrated into the main base station (now they use the same wifi ID), but the AirPort Express shows in my Airport Utility and can be recognized in the iTunes as such. I plugged the Airport Express into my living room, and the signal strength was doubly boosted.

  • Using Airport Express to create a WDS with XP

I have a Dell laptop running XP Pro (SP 2) connected wirelessly to my Airport Extreme Base Station using a Netgear WGT511 wireless card. I am trying to create a WDS using 1 (or 2 if necessary) Airport Express stations to extend the wireless signal throughout the house. I am unable to get the Airport Express to connect to the Airport Extreme Base Station - the light on the Airport Express only blinks orange. I have tried the Setup assistant to no avail so far. The laptop does connect to the Airport Express, but I cannot connect to the internet as I can when directly connected to the Base Station.
    Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,
I tried this last night and could not get it to work. I did manage to get the light on the Airport Express to go solid green, but I could not get the laptop (or the Imac) to recognize the Express - it would only connect to the Extreme base station. Re-scanning did not help.
I should add that I have no security enabled; however I do have a firewall (McAffee) on the laptop.

  • Using an Aiport Express in a hotel with no computer?

Quick question about the Airport Express. I have one and use it to extend my Airport Extreme network at home, but I'll be travelling soon and staying in a hotel with ethernet but no Wi-Fi. I'll have my iPhone with me, but not my Macbook.
Question is, can I use the Airport Express to set up a Wi-Fi network using the hotel's Ethernet based web access? I obviously won't have any access to the Airport set-up utility when away, as I'll just have my iPhone.
Is this possible? And if so, do I have to set anything up on the Airport Express before I leave and disconnect it from my home network? I can't use the 3G on my iPhone as I'll be abroad and the roaming charges are completely insane.
    Thanks!

    Here's how to do it:
You'll need to configure the AirPort Express at home before you take the trip.
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab and set up your AX to "create a wireless network"
Adjust network name, security, password as needed.
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
    Click Update to save settings
When you plug the AX in to hotel's ethernet jack, open the browser on your iPhone and the hotel's internet page should appear. Enter the information requested, pay fees, etc and you should be good to go.
Some hotel routers just will not accept a connection from another router like the AX, but in general, you can expect this to work about 90% of the time when the hotel has an ethernet connection.

  • Using an aiport express + airport extreme for printing.

I have an airport extreme to which I connect a lexmark color laser printer. Everything works well. I just moved and am now using DSL. There is no phone jack in the room where I want to put my printer. Can I use the airport extreme for my wireless internet through my dsl phone line and then use an airport express to hook up my printer and print wirelessly? Can I use a second airport express for a second printer which will go in yet a different place?

Another option would be to setup the Express units as clients on your Airport network especially if you don't need to extend your network.
You will still be able to print, but avoid the bandwidth hit that using WDS (extending the network) has.

  • Can I use the Airport Express to create a secure wireless network in a wireless-only hotel?

Can I use the Airport Express to log onto an unsecured hotel wireless network, without an ethernet cable, to create a secure wireless network for my MacbookAir, IPad, IPhone, etc.? If so, how is that done?

will the Airport Express allow you to log onto a hotel wireless network, and broadcast a secure wireless network in your room for your wireless devices, like the Ipad, Iphone, etc.?
The bottom line with a single AirPort Express is no.
The AirPort Express can only "extend" a wireless network when the network is being provided by another Apple router.
As you might imagine, it is extremely unlikely that that the hotel network....which no doubt uses professional wireless access points provided by a manufacturer of commercial systems.....would be compatible with an AirPort Express.
In many years of travel domestically and internationally, I cannot recall a time when a single AirPort Express would "extend" the signal provided by a hotel's wireless network.
However, if you had two AirPort Express devices handy, you might be able to configure one to "join" the hotel network and provide an Ethernet signal to the second AirPort Express, which would be configured to "create" your own "private"  wireless network.

  • Using the Aiport Express as a Wireless Access Point on Windows XP

I would like to use my airport express as a wireless access point so that it will connect wirelessly to my router and via an Ethernet cable to my laptop that does not have a wireless card. Also, I have a laptop that I don't have admin rights to, so I can't install the airport express software. I do have another computer in which I am able to set things up on, but ultimately I would like to use the Ethernet port on the airport express as a DHCP device that once configured it will automatically connect to my laptop even after powering off and on any machine with DHCP. I believe that this can be done - but correct me if I am wrong.
So far, I have been able to get the airport express to connect to my router, but I can't seem to get the intenet connection on my laptop. Can someone help? Does the software have to be installed to work even after it is configured?
    Thanks!

I have successfully gotten my AX to connect to my wireless router via the wireless client mode, but I can't seem to get the network connection to come out the either net jack of the AX.
Unfortunately, the wireless client mode will not activate the Ethernet port. The purpose of this mode is to connect to an existing wireless network as a client (just like any other device connecting to the network) and be able to either/or stream iTunes or share a USB printer.
The only mode where the Ethernet port is enabled, would be to configure the AX as either a relay or remote base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). But, unfortunately, your Belkin wireless router may not be WDS-compatible with the AirPorts.
Again, the only Belkin routers, that I'm aware of that are compatible are the F5D7230-4 & F5D7130.

  • Can I use my AirPort express to create a wireless network in my uni room?

So, I'm going to university in september and my room has an ethernet port to connect to the internet. If I buy an AirPort express, can I plug it into the ethernet port to create a wirelss network in my room?

The quick answer is yes.  However, You should check with the appropriate University authorities to make sure they will allow it (some do not)  If they agree, they may offer you a tutorial as to what you need to do to enable it.
Many business people utilize the Airport Express to provide the convenience of Wi fi in their hotel rooms, if the hotel doesn't supply an in house Wi Fi system.

  • Can one use Final Cut Express to create a multi-track CD?

I like the editor in FCE, and have used it to break up an audio recording of a concert into all the tracks, with chapter markers. Now is there a utility that will make this into a CD?
The slow way is to export each chunk as an audio file, and then import them all into iTunes and burn a CD from that.
There must be a quick way!
Maybe I'm asking in a slightly odd place, so recommendations of somewhere else to ask (shame there's no iCD !) also appreciated.

There's no direct path from FCE to an Audio CD that I'm aware of.  If the audio consists of individual clips in the Finder, you could just use them in iTunes or Toast to create the Audio CD.  Either app will convert the 48khz audio to 44.1khz for the CD.
Otherwise you'll have to cut the audio into the individual tracks as needed.

  • Can you use 2 Aiport Express's; one as a base station & one to extend range

I have 2 Express units. Would like to use one as base station and one as a booster to extend the signal. Can this be done, or do you have to have an Extreme? I have 2 expresses as want to be able to use airtunes on 2 seperate stereos (not necessarily at same time). My cofig would be have cable modem ethernetted to the 1st Express, and have it also hooked to cable; computer in same room. 2nd Express is downstairs, near anohter stereo. Would like the one computer to send airtunes to both stereos ultimately.
Have tried using airport admin utility ap in the Utilities folder, but did not seem to help; no doubt I may have not done properly.
Thank you to the genius who can help me w/ this. Tim

I have 2 Express units. Would like to use one as base
station and one as a booster to extend the signal.
    Can this be done
    Yes.
Configure one Airport Express (AX) as a normal base station.
Hard reset the second and reconfigure using the assistant to extend the network of the first, this will automatically configure both AXs correctly.

  • Using 1 airport Express to create a WAN with a neighbour

We have a broadband internet connection at home via a Wimax-style radio link. Our neighbour, about 200 metres away is unable to get the same service as his house does not have line-of-sight to the transmitter. It's a holiday home and he only needs the connection infrequently for email etc., so I'd be happy to share my connection and bandwidth with him.
I'm wondering if I could achieve this by installing an Airport Express (in a weatherproof plastic box) on our rooftop, another one, mounted externally on his house and possibly another inside his house, to extend the range.
Is this a practical concept and would 200m be a feasible distance in open air?

    Hi,
If absolutely necessary, you may want to experiment with a private Wi-Fi link based upon two standard wireless Ethernet bridge devices (also known as gaming adapters) connected to high-gain outside antennas. There are wireless Ethernet bridge models from many manufacturers; in this case you would need a type with (a connector for) an external antenna. Try an Internet search if you wish to build your own directional antenna.
An easier solution for your neighbour may be to buy a USB mobile broadband modem and connect directly to one of the 3G networks.

  • Backup AVCHD Camcorder using Final Cut Express

I have previously used Final Cut Express to create a backup copy of all the video on my AVCHD Hard Drive Camcorder. However, since that time, I had to reinstall Final Cut Express. I can no longer remember or find how to do this again. Can someone please help? Did apple remove this functionality?

I just purchased FCE 4 with a new iMac but haven't used it yet. But I do know that iMovie '09 has an Archive feature that will do what you are looking for. It copies the contents of the camera in it's original Full HD format to the hard drive. I do this then import the video to iMovie using the compressed file type. With the original on the hard drive, you can always re-import to iMovie '09 (and FCE 4, I presume) if you want to use the Full HD original format at a later date.

  • Please Help: old Airport Extreme, new Aiport Express, want to WDS

    Hi,
I'm sorry if this topic has been covered before, but I can't seem to find a post with my exact situation. I have a G4 desktop (no Airport card) connected to an Airport Extreme Base Station (about 2 years old) which is connected to a 2wire DSL model. My wife and I have been able to use the wireless network in our house for a year or two now with our laptops (PowerBook and few month old MacBook Pro). We've been able to connect to the internet and can print to our laser printer with no problem. However our living room is just out of range (one bar and usually drops out) so I thought extending the range of the Base Station with an Airport Express would allow us better access from the place we hang out in the most.
After reading the very sketchy start up manual as well as trying various combinations of steps posted here, I am still having trouble setting this thing up. Simply plugging in the AX and using Airport Set Up Assistant, I was able to create a WDS and add the AX as a remote station by entering its MAC address (it was not recognized automatically). However, when pushing "update" a message came up saying the AX needed to be set up manually.
So, I realized maybe I needed to plug the ethernet cable directly into the AX and use the Aiport Assistant. I tried that once and nothing happened. Yellow light flashing. I tried it again adjusting a setting for "Join an existing network" and named the network the same as our already established network. The light turned green! So, not knowing what to do next (Hello, Apple! Please write better instructions) I crossed my fingers and unplugged the Ethernet cable and put it back in the existing Base Station. Did that. Still green! Then I had to move the AX from the office out into the hallway toward the living room. Cross fingers, unplugged AX and ran it down hallway. Plugged it in, wait for Yellow light, hey it turned green! I took the MacBook to the living room, turned it on, 4 bars, cool! Started Safari and.... nothing. No web page loaded. No email. Nada. Great looking bars, though.
So, frustrated, I unplugged the AX and just left it a day. Last night, I moved it back to the office and tried to see if I had a setting wrong. Create new network? Join existing network? Same or different channel as Base Station? Use password security on AX? on just the Base Station? both? Why doesn't the manual mention these things? I even tried soft reset and hard reset. I could never get the green light to come on again.
Does anytone know where I find simple step-by-step instructions to help me? I thought Apple was supposed to be "easy". Am I missing something? My G4 desktop does not have an Aiport card, so I can't configure both Stations without having the Ethernet cable plugged directly into either gadget.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah, Duane posted the link to the good directions. The directions given in the printed manual for the base station and the online help for the base station is inadequate when it comes to WDS set up.
I have an Airport Extreme and two Airport Express. When I was setting up WDS, it did take a while because certain errors did keep coming up. But eventually it worked. I now get the hang of it.
One difference that kept me really confused but now I understand is the difference between relay and remote base station.
    Picture these two diagrams
    A) Airport Extreme <--> Express1 <--> Express2
    B) Airport Extreme <--> Express2
The <--> signs mean wireless connection.
In picture (A), the Extreme is broadcasting to Express1 which then relays the signal to Express2. In this case, Express1 is a relay base station and Express2 is a remote base station.
In picture (B), the Extreme is broadcasting to Express2. In this case, the Express2 is also a remote base station and not a relay. There is not relay base station in (B).
I don't know why that kept me so confused but once I got it, I got it. Hope this helps for your WDS set up.

  • My current os x is 10.9.5, using final cut express vers. 4.0.1.  I have imported .mov clips created with a older mac os x (lion) and converted them to import into fce. after doing this as well as putting clips on the fce timeline when playing back t.h

My current os x is 10.9.5, using final cut express vers. 4.0.1.  I have imported .mov clips created on a older mac os x (lion) and when I wanted to import them into fce, a quicktime conversion window opened up and converted them (I haven't experienced this in the past). I then imported the converted quicktime clips into my fce project.  After doing this I took selected clips and put those edited clips on the fce timeline.  When playing the video back in the fce timeline,I noticed
    1) the video wasn't playing back smoothly like the original content
    2) when looking at the timecode reading of the timeline, the timecode was sputtering as well as the video and audio.  I exported to quicktime just to see if that was consistent, it was.
When I play the converted quicktime content independently of fce,  it plays normally (no sputtering of timecode, video and audio.  Need help to resolve the sputtering playback of converted video content in the fce timeline.  I've never experienced this before.  Any suggestions?

When you say you converted the clips before importing them into FCE, did you convert to AIC or DV and do the converted clips match your FCE Sequence settings exactly?  If not, go back and convert the original files again, using the intended Sequence settings as a guide.

  • Using Aiport Express and internet at the same time?

I was just wondering if anyone could offer any advice on this subject please?
I've got a Macbook running through a wireless BT ADSL modem. I have also managed to connect the Macbook to my Aiport Express to allow me to wirelessly pipe iTunes through my stereo. I am aware that you cannot run both at once (i.e pipe music and browse the web) due to the Macbook being able to be only connected to one wireless network at a time.
My questions is whether there is anyway round this? If I bought an Aiport Extreme base station, connected that to my wireless router and used the Airport Extreme base station for the wireless connection would I be able to add the Aiport Express to that wireless network and subsequently have the internet and the Aiport Express running on the same wireless network - hence being able to pipe the music wirelessly and also browse the web at the same time?
Or is there another way round it?
Any info anyone could offer would be a great help
    Thanks in advance

I am trying to install a second airport express to extend my network. When I use the aiport utility it does not see the second airport express.

Suggest that you perform a Factory Default Reset as follows:
    Pull the Express from power
    Wait a few moments
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it an additonal 8-10 seconds while you plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button and allow 40-45 seconds for the Express to restart
Apple's instructions to do what you want are here:
It will often help to temporarily connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to the AirPort Express for the setup. Once the Express is configured, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable and move the Express to the desired location.

Although an AirPort Extreme is shown as the extending device in the example, the setup for an AirPort Express is exactly the same
