Using an Airport Express to extend the range of my Airport Extreme.

i've just bought an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express so i can connect my MacBook in my bedroom (second floor) to the DSL modem in the basement.
i was able to configure the Extreme as a base station but cannot figure out how to configure the Express to use as a relay.
no matter what i do, i cannot get the Express to show up in the Airport Utility, even when i have it powered in right beside the Extreme base station in the basement.
please help!

I have found that you need to have an Ethernet cord connecting the Airport Express to your Mac to set up the Express to work on WDS with your Extreme. Once it is set up, you should be able to see both the Extreme and the Express wirelessly, but for setup you need the wire to the Express.

I am trying to use the Airport Express to extend the range of the network created by my Airport Extreme. The Express works in terms of streaming music from iTunes on the PC connected to th Extreme.
However, I am trying to run a short Cat-5 cable out of the Express to a nearby PC in order to have access to the internet. If the Express is recognized by the Extreme and can play music through connected stereo cables, why can I get an internet connection through the LAN port..??
Here's a real basic representation of my connections...

To wirelessly extend the range between two AirPorts, you need to configure them in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
To facilitate the WDS set up, try the following:
o Perform a "hard" reset on the AirPort Extreme Base Stations & a "factory default" reset on the AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) before setting up the WDS.
o Place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete.
o To avoid having to "switch" wireless networks during the WDS setup, attach each of the remote/relay base station, via an Ethernet cable, to the main base station. Of course, this would be dependent on the AirPort types used for the main/relays/remotes.
o Be sure to jot down the MAC addresses for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS as these will be required during the setup.
o When enabling wireless encryption, configure the relay/remote base stations first and the main base station last.

You can connect the AirPort Express to the wall port in the bedroom for the setup.....but first....if you have not already done so.....it would be a great idea to make sure that the connection in the bedroom is working correctly.
To do that, turn off the wireless on a laptop and connect the laptop directly to the wall port in the bedroom using an Ethernet cable. Make sure that the laptop can get a good Internet connection that way. If it can, this tells you that the cabling is working correctly, so the Express will work well when you connect it up.
If you don't have a laptop with an Ethernet port, then we'll have to assume that the folks that pulled the cables and installed the jacks tested things as part of the installation.
When you are ready to install the Express, you can use an iPhone or iPad if you have one handy for the setup.

I have an old airport that still works, can you use it the same way that one uses an airport express to extend the range of an airport extreme base station?

It would save me a few bucks if I could use an old airport that I have to extend the range of a new airport extreme. My concept would simply be to use the old Airport the same way I would use a newer Airport Express as a slave repeater. Is this doable?

Both the new AirPort Extreme and older AirPort Express will have to be configured using Apple's WDS settings to provide more wireless coverage.
Here are the downsides:
WDS operates only at "g" wireless speeds, so you will lose all of the faster "n" wireless capability of the new AirPort Extreme
WDS cuts the bandwidth on the entire network in half, so you will have a "g" wireless network running at half speed.
WDS is difficult for most users to configure because it is easy to make a mistake and hard to recover without starting all over again
Bottom line......Saving a few bucks will be very costly in terms of performance on your network.

Using an Airport express to extend the range of my neighbor'd Belkin Pre-N

My wife just got an iMac 17" core duo and it is now a paperweight! She has been unable to get a signal from our neighbor's Belkin pre-n wreless router (I bought it thinking it would increase the range of the signal:(). She has an airport express, is there anyway to turnit into a bridge? If not what are my options for extending the range of the Wireless capabilities of the iMac?

To do this, you must use WDS to connect the AirPort Express wirelessly to another base station. This apparently works with only 2 Belkin devices (F5D7230-4 and F5D7231). If your neighbor has one of those devices it may work.
Does your neighbor know that you are trying to connect to their network?

How do I resolve error 10057 when trying to set up my airport express to extend the range of my wireless network

I have a Dell XPS running on Windows 7 and use an AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi to get wireless internet access for other laptops in the home. I want to connect an AirPort Express 802.11n into the network to wirelessly extend the range of my wireless network. I have installed the AirPort Utility but when I attempt to connect to the AirPort Express, it gives me an error code 10057 and says I should check the internet connection. I have tried resetting the TCP/IP settings on my PC but that did not fix the issue. The Airport Express is also flashing yellow rather than solid green. Has anyone found a fix for this issue?

This sounds as if you have an older AirPort Express that is no longer supported by the newer Mavericks operating system.
To check and see if that might be the case, locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. It will start with an "A" followed by four numbers. Hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need reading glasses or a magnifying class to see the model number clearly.
Model numbers A1084 and A1088 of the AirPort Express are no longer supported by AirPort Utility in Mavericks.
You will need to use a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to administer the older AirPort Express.

But I can't to configure to that. On Airport Utility appear the Airport Express connected directly to internet globe, but don't work.

The AirPort cannot do what you ask.
The Airport needs to connect to a modem, or another router......not to a computer.
The Express can only extend a wireless signal that has been provided by another Apple router.

Can I use an old Airport Express to extend the range of a new Airport Express?

Hi all. I have an old Airport Express 802.11g (First Gen?) that is starting to fade. Still works, but not what it used to be. So I am going to buy a new Airport Express. I'm not interested in the Airport Extreme.
Question: If I use the new Airport Express as my main wireless router, can I plug my old Airport Express into another room as an extender? In other words, with the old Express and the new Express talk to each other or will a new Express only allow extension with another new Express?

Sorry, but the old AirPort Express 802.11 b/g does not have a setting to "Extend a wireless network", so it cannot be used as a extender with the newer AirPort Express if you plan to connect wirelessly.
If you plan to connect the older Express using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, then it could be configured to provide additional wireless signal coverage in that manner.

How to use the airport express to extend the range of an existing airport extreme wireless network?

The instruction manual says nothing on the topic, so maybe it is not possible. The only reason I think it is possible is that two different Apple reps told my girlfriend it was possible. Now we have one, and no clue how to proceed.
We have an Airport Extreme, but its range is maximum 30 feet. We would like to double that. What do we do with the Airport Express? (We cannot move the modem nor the Airport Extreme. What we are trying to do has nothing to do with speakers, iTunes, or printers.)

How do i use airport extreme to extend the range of my imac

I have an 2012 Imac and I would like to plug the Internet to my imac and use the the imac wireless and use my airport express to extend the range of the imac wireless signal. I am having an awfully hard time figuring this out - can anyone pass along a link to a document or any suggestions?

Although two AirPort Extremes are pictured in the example, the setup for a Time Capsule and AirPort Express would be exactly the same.
In general, a good starting location for the AirPort Express would be a point that is approximately half the distance from the Time Capsule and the area that needs more wireless coverage. You may need to experiment with the location of the Express a bit depending on the number of obstructions like walls and/or ceilings in the signal path

I have read on Apple's description of the Airport Express that it is possible to extend the range of an existing network. I have the OLDER version of the Time Capsule (it is still wireless-N but it can only broadcast EITHER 2.4 or 5 gHZ at a given time) that does not have the simultaneous broadcasting. Can I still use the Airport Express to extend the range of my Time Capsule network?

i think you have the same concern as mine....
would the express extend the n or g networks? i am pretty sure it cant dual broadcast.....
my guess is that it would extend the n network by default, but if an iphone hooks up to the part of the network that the express is covering, it will probably slow down to a g speed.
i am one of those that suffer from my existing airport extreme and express slowing down when i turn on my ipod touch or iphone! the whole network slows down to the lowest common denominator.
by getting the new time capsule (or the new airport extreme), i will be fine in the part of the house that is being served by the new machines, but i am expecting the network to slow down where the express is in incharge!
this is all in preparation to buy a new TC...... is my understanding correct?

Extending the range of Airport Extreme 802.11n

I have 2 Airport Extremes 802.11n. One of the is connected to a DSL modem and it works fine. I have been trying to use the other one to extend the network, but have not been successful.
I used the exact steps in the manual (Designing Airport Network) published by Apple. The steps I used (several times) were under "Extending the Range of an 802.11n Network".
Whenever I compete the steps and update the base station, the one that I want to use as the extension (not connected to the internet) disappears from the Airport Utility Application and the base station blinks the orange light. I did reset the base station and tried the guide several times but no success.
I am doing something wrong or this manual is not complete. Any help from you guys will be most appreciated.

I have the same problem. I didn't have this issue with the 802.11g version. Are you using the base station in "bridge" mode? Because when I used the "n" basestation in DHCP/NAT mode, it worked fine. Unfortunately, I needed to change to bridge mode for reliability issues with my service provider.
Now I have the same issue as you.

Extending the range of my wireless network

I have a home network that comprises of a Netgear DG834G Wireless ADSL router and then an eMac that connects with ethernet and an iMac and 4 Laptops that connect with wireless (all are 802.11g except one). My problem is that certain areas of the house are complete deadspots for Airport reception and one of them happens to be an office. Is there anyway of extending the airport range into those rooms. I know Airport Express can extend the range of a proper AEBS, but I don't have one of them and I don't think I'm really in the position to get one seeing as they are now disallowed for sale in the EU. Is it possible to extend the range of my router with an Airport Express, or do I have to look for a 3rd party option? and even then, what 3rd party hardware would I use?
If need be, I can run an ethernet cable up to the office, but its a bit of a hassle seeing as it is up some stairs...
I've tried getting a new ariel, but it makes little difference to the one supplied...

Another option would be to use WDS with TWO Airport Express units one of which is plugged into one of the Netgear LAN ports.
