Using an airport extreme as a repeater with the use of a network cable

My network now is like this: cablemodem with built in router-->switch-->time machine set as bridge --> imac and macbookpro wirelesly connected. Printer is on the usb port of the time machine.
Since i live in a big house with a loth of steel and stone i need to extend the range of my wireless network. I have tried this with an old "b/g airport express" set as an extender "join existing network". Well this does not work. Anyway i am considering to buy an "airport extreme n" i have a network cable on every floor of my home. For me it would be logic to connect the time machine by using a network cable in to a lanport of the extreme and then configuring the extreme as an extender. Before i buy the extreme i would like to now if this would work! I am a little reluctant because it does not seem to work at all with my old express b/g airport(and i used the cairport config manager in the wright way) , altough if i use it to make a new wireless network and connect it with a networkcable to my switch it works perfectly!?
Thanks for any information in advance.
Michel

FWIW, to provide wireless coverage throughout my two-story home, I use a wired Cisco router as my main Internet router which then "feeds" an Ethernet network to each room on both floors. In the downstair family room and in an upstairs office, I have connected an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) to these Ethernet runs. Overall, I have configured the routers for a "roaming" type network and can literally walk a wireless laptop from room-to-room throughout the house and still be on the "same" wireless network.
... so what you are proposing should work just fine.

  • Will cables CAT6a (Shielded Twisted Pair) work (will the grounding work?) with Airport Extreme (5th and 6th generation) ? I can see a little metal edges on the Airport Extreme 6th generation, is that the grounding for STP CAT6a cables?

I recently had to change the cabling for my house and since I would have to buy all new, I used CAT6a cables, and I noticed that they are all Shielded Twisted Pair (STP), which meand that they have an extra layer of protection against interferences. The RJ45 Connectors are all made of metal on these cables.
The main router in my house will be a 6th generation Ariport Extreme, and I noticed that on the Airport Connectors, there are to metal edges on the RJ45 female. Is that the groudinging for the STP cables? I noticed the same metal edges on the Airport Extreme 5th generation.
    Thank you,

Yes, but the power cable on the AE has no gnd pin so there is no actual grounding.. cables should only be grounded at one end anyway.. but the metal tabs are linked to the metal frame of the AE or TC..
At least in all the models up to AC .. it is still out of my reach cost wise. As I would have to pull it apart and plug my meter in there.. still they will eventually start coming in for repair.

  • Airport extreme won't connect to the modem

I am having issue with the Airport extreme after update the Airport Utility.
Individually, both Airport extreme and the modem/ router (Belkin)  is working fine.
All my Mac system can detect the Airport extreme, but unable to access internet as not internet connection.
Then I connect via the WIFI modem directly, the internet access is fine.
I have reset both units few times, but no luck, checked the firmware, they are all up-to-date.
It seems the Airport extreme is not communicating with the modem.
Does anyone know how to fix it? Many thanks.

the mac address of the old router is probally linked thru a IP lease to your ISP account. You may need to call your ISP and have them release the lease on your IP address. You old router should be turned off when they do this.

I've encountered this error myself upon occasion.  If I remember correctly, it was a permissions/ownership issue with the some of the files I was copying.

  • Can i use my airport extreme as a modem with comcast

can i use my airport extreme as a modem with comcast cable

No, since there is no modem on board an AirPort Extreme, so you will need to use an outboard modem if you want the AirPort Extreme to have Internet access.

  • My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?

My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?  Network is administered through an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Ideally, would like for the second Airport Extreme hard drive to appear on the list of devices in the Finder window.

    Ok.. gottcha
The problem is network wise.. Yosemite is about equal to tin cans and string.. pathetic.
Here is my usual set of instructions to get anything working on Yosemite.
The best way to fix problems is a full factory reset of all the AE in the network.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen5 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for AE which is router.. it is a problem for AE which is bridged.. you will need to set static IP in the main router by dhcp reservations or use static IP in the AE which is tricky.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Now mount the disk of the second AE in finder... manually.
Use Go, Connect to Server and type in the AE ip address.
    SMB://10.0.1.2
Where you will replace that address with the actual address. The network resource should be discovered and then it will request the password.. type that in and make sure you tick to save it in your keychain.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
Do as much as you want of the above... not all of it is necessary.. only if you want it reliable.. or as reliable as Yosemite in its current incarnation can manage.
The most important thing is point 6.. mount the disk using direct IP address and not names.. dns in Yosemite is fatally flawed.

In order to set up and install the new AirPort Extreme:
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3
would it work with my older osx 10.6.8?
Yes, if you set up the new AirPort Extreme using the guidelines above. The 10.6.8 Mac will be able to connect to the AirPort Extreme, but it will not be able to make any configuration changes.
Only the devices listed above can be used to set up and make any changes to the new AirPort.

  • Will my airport extreme 2nd generation work with docsis 3.0 cable modems?

Will my airport extreme 2nd Gen work with docsis 3.0 cable modems?

    RRoger, everything is working fine.
So, what is the actual problem here?  You are now wondering if the Vonage can handle the speed from the modem? Is that the "problem" after all this discussion?
now I am wondering if my current setup will allow me to get docsis 3.0 speeds.
What speed is your Internet provider delivering to you?
The AirPort Express uses 100 Mbps Ethernet ports, so it will handle up to 100 Mbps. We have already told you that.
Vonage likely does the same. The answer is almost certainly "yes" .......both the Vonage and AirPort will handle the speed from the modem.
If you want to double check this, please provide the model number of the Vonage,  and we will try to look up the specifications for the device. If you have documentation there with specifications for the Vonage device, check to see if the Ethernet ports are listed as 10/100. This is standard with almost all devices, with some of them handling even higher speeds 10/100/1000.
Chances are, your network will handle a lot more speed than your service provider is supplying to you. So, the "choke" point on your network may very well be your service provider and modem......not the Vonage and AirPort.

  • Just bought a brand new Airport Extreme and having trouble with it being recognized. I have a Mac version 10.5.8. Is my computer compatible?  I have the Airport Express now and it works fine.

Just bought a brand new airport extreme and having trouble with it being recognized.  My mac is version 10.5.8.  What should I do?

The new AirPort Extreme needs the 6.x version of AirPort Utility, which comes packed in with Lion 10.7.5 or Mountain Lion 10.8.x......or......you can also configure the device using an iPhone or iPad running a recent iOS.
    From Apple's Specifications:
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3
    A few options.....
Borrow another Mac running Lion or Mountain Lion for 10-15 minutes and set it up. The Mac running 10.5.8 will be able to connect to the wireless....but it will not be able to make any changes to the configuration of the Extreme.
Update to Lion or Mountain Lion.....but check first to make sure that your Mac will support the operating system first.
Use....or borrow an iPhone or iPad to set up the Extreme

my airport extreme only will connect with computer or ipad not both

We need just a bit more information, please before we can begin to accurately troubleshoot this issue.
    1) What is the make and model number of your modem?
    2) What operating system are you using on the MacBook Pro at this time. Your tagline indicates that you are using OS X (10.4.8), but this is about 6-7 years out of date.
If you are no sure which operating system your Mac is using......click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac. Post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.

  • AIrport Extreme-n internet issue with WDS networking

I have 1 AIRPORT EXTREME-n STATION set as the MAIN STATION connected to a modem.
With the following configuration my Internet connection drops every 4-5 minutes and I have to reset modem and Airport Extreme:
    - A second Airport Extreme-n (set as RELAY) connected to the main station
    - 1 Airport Express unit (set as remote) connected to the main station
    - 2 Airport Express units (set as remote) connected to the relay station
With the following configuration my Internet connection does NOT drop:
    - Second Airport Extreme-n (set as REMOTE) connected to the main one
    - 3 Airport Extreme units (set as remote) connected to the main station
I need to connect everything as in the first case scenario, because two of the Airport Extreme units are quite far from the main Airport Extreme station (I bought a second Extreme station to extend the signal!).
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    Powerbook g4 12   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Not trying to insult you with basics, but there are a few things you can try with your scenario (which is probably one of the most advanced and therefore problem-prone setups). It may also be there are just some issues that Apple has to work out in future updates.
    1. Factory reset on ALL 5 units.
    2. Changing channels (use only 1, 6, or 11 - there are reasons why).
    3. Try changing encryption levels to at least see if that seems to be an issue. I usually start with "None" to eliminate a bad link in the chain.
    4. Power levels lowering one or both units may actually help in some situations.
    5. Since you are obviously running 2.4GHz with compatibility for BG clients, there are some other settings to play with like interference robustness on/off, multicast rate, etc.
    Hope you get it going.

  • Best Airport Extreme Wireless Radio Mode with Old and New Macs and PC

I'm running Airport Utility 5.3.2 and am running / connecting to the Internet with a new Airport Extreme 802.11n Gigabit Ethernet (the new squared off one) with "Version 7.3.2".
In addition to my new MacBook Black (which has 802.11n, I have two other older Maxs that run 802.11b/g (and also a PC that has 802.11.b/g/n).
Currently, the Airport Extreme's "Wireless" "Radio Mode" is set to
    802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
But, reviewing the Radio Mode menu, I see there are a number of choices that seem "faster" - 802.11n only (2.4 GHz), 802.11n (802.11a compatible) and 802.11n only (5 GHz).
Can I set the Radio Mode to any of these other settings and still have my older Macs (and the PC) connect to the internet using this Airport Extreme? Or, do I have to leave my Airport Extreme Radio Mode set to what appears to be a slower speed 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) setting to allow others to use this Airport Extreme Base Station?
FWIW, I do have an older Airport 802.11g version 5.7 still connected and set up and the older computers can / could connect through that. However, I was hoping to give that one to a friend for their use elesewhere and wanted to have only one Airport Extreme set up at my house.

    "you'll use N+B/G at 2.4 GHZ."
I guess you means that I should continue with my current setting on the Airport Extreme - which is "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)" - if I want all my computers to access the web via the Extreme. Correct?
I'm too much of a novice to try a "bridge" mode setup.
However, your suggestion (I think) "It would be more reliable and faster speed if you could connect both routers to using ethernet" does give me hope.
My Verizon Fios modem is actually a router. Indeed, I have my TiVo box connected to the Fios modem/router.
If I connect BOTH of my Airport Base Stations to the Fios modem/router and then do the following:
    (1) set the newer "Extreme" Base Station to "802.11n only (5 GHz)" and
    (2) keep the older Base Station (running 802.11g) as is
then my (and others') newer computer(s) with 802.11n can connect at high speed via the Extreme and older computers can still connect using the older Base Station.
    Correct?

  • Make AirPort Extreme share internet connection with Time Capsule

    Hello,
This is the situation: in one room there's an old Mac, the modem which delivers the internet and the AirPort Extreme which is connected to the modem.
In another room there's the Mac Pro, the Time Capsule which is connected to the Mac Pro with an ethernet cable and to a printer via USB.
I want the AirPort Extreme to wirelessly share it's internet connection with the Time Capsule so that the Time Capsule can share the printer with all three Macs (old Mac, Mac Pro and Macbook Pro), the Mac Pro can use the Time Capsule for Time Machine functionality and maybe the Macbook Pro too.
And just using the Time Capsule for internet.
    How can I do this?
At the moment the AirPort Extreme is disconnected and the Time Capsule is used instead, but this way I can't share the printer...
    Thanks!

Is that AirPort Extreme "flat" or dome-shaped?  If it's flat (802.11n-capable), you should be able to configure the "main" router to "Allow this network to be extended" and the other to "Join a wireless network".  If the Extreme is dome-shaped, then you need a more-complicated "WDS" arrangement.  In either case it shouldn't matter much which router plays which role.
I'm not sure what you mean by "And just using the Time Capsule for internet."

Is the printer connected to the USB port of the Time Capsule?  Can you see the printer in the "Printer" panel of AirPort Utility?  What happens when you try to use it from one of the Macs?

  • Remote access the airport extreme usb hard drive over the internet with multiple users?

I just purchase the new airport extreme 802.11n and set it up on my LAN behind a comcast modem with broadband.  I plugged a 3 tb Seagate hard drive formatted with fat32 (default) to it and have set it up for access for all of my computers, ipad, iphone, android in my house.  Everything works as expected, internet access, file access to the USB HD on all devices locally through back to my mac.  I would now like to allow my daughters in another state to access this drive through the Airport Extreme remotely from their location and have there own accounts on this hard drive to store and move their files for on the go access.  I have studied many of the forums and have enabled share disks over WAN, Enable file sharing but no body really gives an exact method of connecting remotely.  I had one of my daughters try on her Macbook Pro laptop through the finder, connect to server, by giving her the IP address.  She could see the name of the Airport Extreme but could not access the hard disk and got a "Not able to connect message".  I am obviously missing something simple that needs to be checked or setup but have drained my brain trying to figure it out.  Most of the forums describe clicking manuel setup on the Airport utility, but with version 6.1 this is now where to be found.  I have a DYN account but could not figure out where to input this in the Airport utility.
There is a network option which has DHCP lease and range and a box for Enable NAT port Mapping Protocal with Enable default host at:
I am guessing that this is for some other purpose though.  Please help

Try installing AirPort Utility 5, then you may be able to follow the guides you mentioned earlier:
